***Richard Otwell #1 Qualifier***
"Boss Hog" Wins!
Talley/Nickens w/ "Budman" at the wheel R.U.

Race #5 is in the books and featured some interesting pairings with very close side by side racing and narrow margins of victory. Thanks to Sammy & the crew @ the Concrete Palace for providing another great track surface for us to enjoy. Special thanks to world famous announcer Lynn Nickerson for binging his skill and expertise in callin' the race. Results, points, and full race report will be posted later. Thanks to everyone that made the trip!

-- Pit Pundit, 07/28/10 1:49am

Sammy & the crew @ Dallas Raceway had a Friday nite TNT session and the three Team NRC entries took full advantage of some extra hits in conditions that would be present on race day. Most of the runs were shut off @ the 330" mark, though the Cowger/Wood gang did post a .74 before they called it a nite.

Saturday was a carbon copy of a typical July day in Texas... plenty of heat with a bit more humidity than we normally see this far north. The eight teams that made the trip for this event provided the best racing of the young season, as #1 Qualifier Richard Otwell (4.703), Joe Pigford (4.705), and Larry Pearce (4.706) were grouped tighter than peas and carrots, and Roy Pigford rounded out the top half @ 4.712.

1st Round...the "Boss Hog" and '09 Champ Larry Pearce were the first pair out. What a race from the flash of the tree 'til the win lite told the crowd who would move on. J. Pig's .026rt 4.691 @ 149.90 edged out Pearce's .031 4.704 @ 149.00. MOV... .0183! That's the way to start things off! Next pair should provide the same great action as Roy Pigford would face off with the #1 Qualified machine of Team O. After the burnout, there was some commotion and quite a bit of activity around Otwell's GXP. The track crew was checking under the car, but after a few seconds they signaled all was well and Otwell's crew put him in the beams. R. Pig meanwhile, was unaffected by all of the excitement, and staged without further ado. At the hit, Pig has the lead but could Otwell's NRC power drive around the Reher-Morrison bullet of Roy...nope, Roy Pigford with the holeshot victory, 4.742 to Richard's quicker, but later, 4.724. Back in the pits, the problem with the Team O ride was traced to a freak water leak. 3rd pair up and out of the water box. The "Budman" Buddy Nickens had drawn Aaron Hubbard and on paper held a sizeable performance advantage. But (all together now!), we don't run 'em on paper. The "Budman" completed his burnout and rolled straight into pre stage. Aaron looks over in the other lane and decides his shoes need tying before he stages...LOL. Anyway, staging's complete with no drama's, and 'Ol Blue is out front when the tree flashes. Aaron's 4.822 would lead the Talley/Nickens entry 'till the first mph lite, where Buddy's 4.747 blew by him by about 4 inches. MOV was .0016! Whew! Last pair up was the Cowger/Wood Grand Am shoed by "Ricky Bobby" Rick Cowger. They would face Randy Elliott in his familiar Corvette. Burnouts complete and "Dandy's" 'Vette dies and refused to restart giving Cowger a free pass to the semi's. Back at the trailer, Elliott traced the problem to a coil wire that had shaken off.

Semi's...Nickens and Cowger were first up and this should be a doozy. They had qualified #5 & #6 and were running similiar numbers. Quick burnout for Cowger and he pre stages waiting for Nickens. Staging process complete, Nickens is gone at the green, but Cowger is still on the line. His crew pushes him back and later disclose they had hurt something the round before and didn't have time to repair it. Nickens moves into the finals. The next pair emptied the "Pig Pen" as "Boss Hog" Joe Pigford would face the challenge from younger brother Roy. Both Pig's run a Stroupe GXP with Reher-Morrison power so it should all come down to the starting line. Good burnouts, and both cars stage, good clean passes in both lanes, win lite says Joe will move on to the final with the best pass of the event 4.664 @ 150.11.

Finals...Once again, based on performance, this should be over before it started. But nothing is a "given" and Buddy and the Talley/Nickens gang can never be taken lightly. David Nickens was in the house tonite along with his wife who was celebrating her birthday. "Budman" sure would like to give her and the team their first victory and move into the points lead with a upset win over the "Boss Hog" and collect the Team O "Bounty" $$ in the process. In the other lane, 2 time Champ Joe Pigford has been here before... cut a decent lite and make a clean run and it should be straight to the winner's circle. Crowds at the fence and everyone watches as both cars thunder out of the 'box, back up, pre stage and wait. "Boss Hog" is known to stage last and maybe Buddy needed to adjust somethin' at the last minute? Anyway, a few seconds go by and Pig stages followed by Buddy, the tree comes down green in both lanes, and Nickens has the early lead. Joe was .021 behind on the tree and he saw a bunch of that black Camaro before his 4.688 turned the bulb on. Buddy's 4.721 just couldn't hold him off, and Pig's Mov was .012. Fantastic finish to an outstanding event. The track was perfect all nite and to cap it off, we had world famous Lynn Nickerson calling the play by play.... it just don't get any better than that!! Thanks to the teams that endured the heat and produced such a stellar event! Our 1st round was 10:20pm and the final was about two hours later...great job everyone!

This was our last scheduled race for this season at the Concrete Palace and our thanks to Kenny, Sammy, Cindy, Sandy, and the entire crew @ Dallas Raceway for making the TPSA part of your 2010 program. We appreciate your hospitality and the all of the effort you give to provide us such a nice venue to play on.
