Date Posted: 06:27:32 02/09/03 Sun In reply to: remaining 5 yearannouncement dated.30/5/2002 's message, "Re: over the full term of the Sydney contract (Melbourne is worth 250mill still approx--source" on 06:17:57 02/09/03 Sun ERG LIMITED 2001-08-13 ASX-SIGNAL-G HOMEX - Perth +++++++++++++++++++++++++ MEDIA RELEASE ERG Group today announced that Integrated Transit Solutions Ltd (ITS) has been selected as preferred tenderer for the NSW Department of Transport Sydney Integrated Ticketing System (SI TS) Project. ITS is the joint venture vehicle formed by ERG and Motorola to bid for the SITS contract. The Sydney system will allow passengers to use one smart card to travel on all public transport including railways, buses (both government-owned and private) and ferries in New South Wales. The NSW Government and ITS will now negotiate the final contract terms with a final contract scheduled by 31 December 2001. Under the draft contract, ITS would supply equipment and software for the Sydney system. In addition, the NSW Department of Transport is to outsource the operation of the Sydney system to ITS for ten years. ITS will use ERG's advanced multi-application smart card solution (MASS) as the core operating system. Mr Peter Fogarty, Chief Executive of ERG, and Chairman of ITS, said the selection of ITS as preferred contractor was a major milestone for the Company. "We look forward to finalising agreements and being in a position to deliver the world's most advanced multi-application smart card solution to New South Wales." The contract calls for multi-application smart cards to be issued in NSW, allowing commuters to buy season "tickets" on the card, and to access options such as stored value ticketing. An extensive reload and usage network across New South Wales will be created, making it easier to buy tickets and cards. The cards will also be capable of supporting non-transit applications. ERG's sm art card technology, which was developed in Australia, is now being used on transport systems in major international cities, including Berlin, Hong Kong, Manchester, Rome, San Francisco, Singapore and Toronto. ERG will manage the project on behalf of ITS, which is a consortium of ERG and Motorola. MEDIA RELEASE FROM TRANSPORT NSW The Department of Transport today announced the preferred proponent to develop a state-of-the art smart card integrated ticketing system for public transport in greater metropolitan Sydney, a spokesman said. Integrated Transit Solutions, a consortium comprising ERG Ltd and Motorola, has been selected as the preferred proponent to design and build NSW's integrated ticketing system. "One card integrated ticketing will make significant customer service improvements by making it easier, safer and much quicker to access all forms of public transport," the spokesman said. "A key benefit of having just one ticket for all forms of public transport, both public and private, will be that instead of queuing up for a ticket, your preferred fare can be automatically loaded onto your smart card when it is required. "Additionally, the smart cards will be 'contactless', which means they do not need to be swiped through a machine. Instead, they only need to pass a 'validator' in the entry/exit area to ensure passengers can continue their journey with little interruption. "The smart card will not need to be removed from a wallet or bag. It only needs to pass the validator, which will signal acceptance of the fare. That means people don't have to fiddle and fumble for their tickets, just walk through the validator with the smart card ticket in your possession, which is an added security feature." The one ticket system will apply to all transport modes in the greater Sydney, Hunter and Illawarra regions, reaching as far as Lithgow in the west and Goulburn in the south west. A single smart card will provide a greater incentive for people to leave their cars at home and take public transport. It will enable travel an all CityRail, light rail, monorail and private and public bus and ferry services. The next step is to negotiate a contract with the Integrated Transit Solutions consortium to design, build and operate the system. After the NSW Department of Transport finalises a contract and costs with the preferred proponent, the new integra ted ticketing system will be designed, built and then phased in from mid 2003, with full implementation expected by early 2005.
