Subject: Talk Hosts in Print

Wanted to throw out to the Board a question on which area talk show host they enjoy for print commentary. While Smerconish is the only one with a weekly gig, I have seen Giordano in The Inquirer on a regular basis as well as John Ziegler (both print and web-based). If you respond with a favorite, please cite why you like their writing- such as "original thought" or "takes a clear, firm stand on an issue" or "compelling writing." It would be interesting to hear specifically why you like a specific host' writing, not just because of pure fanatical adoration (like one particular fawning poster here who shall remain nameless).

[> Most hosts that I have read in print or heard in a speaking engagement, frankly, "wing it." You may be able to speak off the top of your head in a radio studio, but when you see a host do that in print, their written words seem to ramble on. I have not been impressed with what I've read. Most of it sounds like it was just spoken, recorded, and transcribed. -- Bogey, 01:15:13 12/19/02 Thu

[> [> Bogey, I agree. Take Smerconish for example. His DN column seems like just a regurgitation of his radio show. The only exception I can think of was his Jayna Davis column (which was well-written and a good summary). -- MD, 12:12:09 12/20/02 Fri

[> [> [> I cannot figure out the Smerconish/Daily News marriage. The Daily News is a primarily urban readership, and the paper's writing has always been sharp, opinionated, and gritty- none of these are remotely associated with Smerconish. I could see his work in the Main Line Times, but in the Daily News it painfully stands out. -- Louis, 10:47:43 12/26/02 Thu

[> What paper are you reading? Mike's column is sharp and hard hitting. And by the way, Daily News "higher ups" say he's the best columnist they've had since Pete Dexter. Give Mike another year, and Philly will have completely forgotten Steve Lopez. There is a reason Mike is the only fulltime columnist from talk radio. Just pick up your Daily News on Thursday! -- A. [> [> I'm on record -I like Mike. But his column is anything but hard hitting. To mention his name in the same paragraph as Steve Lopez is laughable. -- Rockford, 15:30:09 01/09/03 Thu

[> [> [> Steve Lopez has not been a columnist here for years and your memory may be faded. Mike is doing great work in the Daily News- in today's column he breaks it up into 3 bite-size topics. That's innovative; who needs those long think pieces. The Daily News better clear out the deadwood & give Mike more frequency & a higher profile. Otherwise, he might be the next star (like Dexter & Lopez) to leave and go national. -- A. Fan, 11:33:22 01/16/03 Thu

[> [> [> [> In a column a few weeks ago, Smerconish called Saddam Hussein "a bad man." If you want to be this so-called hard-hitting journalist-star-in-the-making, at least spend a few bucks on a thesaurus. If "a bad man" is the best description you can come up with, I don't think Dexter or Lopez have to worry about their reputations being challenged. -- Louis, 19:05:11 01/24/03 Fri
