Subject: bfg, I never mentioned John Allen. My reference to Cardinal Ratzinger's supposed desire to go back to teaching came directly out of YOUR post, to which I was replying. I'm not a reader of the National Catholic Reporter, and don't think one has to read "VERY liberal magazines" (your words, again) to conclude that the new Pope is an anachronism. The only positive thing I can see in a Ratzinger papacy is that it might not be all that long, since he is already 78 years of age.
In reply to: bfg 's message, "you're completely wrong. It's John Allen, the Vatican correspondent of the Nat'l Catholic Reporter and a Ratzinger biographer, who has said that he wanted to return to teaching. BTW, NCR is a VERY liberal magazine and probably upset by the selection so it's unlikely that Allen worte that b/c he's a big fan." on Tue April 19, 2005 18:56:45
