Relph expected to start for St. BonaventureAssociated Press

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- St. Bonaventure guard Tyler Relph was suspended indefinitely on Wednesday, three days after being charged with drunken driving.

Relph was suspended Tuesday for violating the athletic department's code of conduct and team policy, athletic director Ron Zwierlein said in a statement. Zwierlein added that the suspension was for an incident outside of school and that his decision was backed by coach Anthony Solomon, who was out of town.

Citing student privacy rules, school officials provided no other details on the suspension.

Village of Allegany police chief Dominic Papasergi said Wednesday that Relph was charged with driving while intoxicated and other traffic violations after allegedly running a stop sign just outside of Olean early Sunday morning.

Relph, who turns 21 in June, declined comment when contacted by The Associated Press.

Relph transferred to St. Bonaventure last spring after playing his freshman season at West Virginia. He was expected to be the Bonnies' starting point guard next season, after sitting out last season under NCAA transfer rules. He is a former New York high school player of the year out of the Rochester area.

Relph's suspension could be a serious blow to a team coming off a 2-26 season and still in the process of rebuilding after the program was sanctioned by the NCAA last year, following a player eligibility scandal in 2002. The Bonnies were punished for using junior forward Jamil Terrell, who was ruled ineligible because he failed to meet NCAA junior college transfer guidelines after earning a welding certificate at a Georgia community college.

In a news release, Solomon said he would address Relph's suspension once he returns to campus and has more information.
