- More TLR racin' in the AFM -- dgrace (NorCal), 23:56:32 07/06/04 Tue
Old news but I just finally got the photos back. Raced my TLR last month at Thunderhill with AFM, crazy race, 2 restarts, I was completely exhausted by the 3rd time we had to grid up! Managed to bungle the start 3 times in a row but passed back everyone who got by me and ended up 12th, the winner was on a Duc spanking me by 10 seconds a lap. Didn't get many photos because we were the last race of the day, but there are a couple in the reply.
Looking forward to Sears Point in August! That track rocks.

I bought my bike yesterday and drove it 160 miles no problem, started up today, set off down the road and as I put it in second gear it cut out. The display shows CHEC so I chaecked the ignition fuse which had blown, so I replaced it with another which automically blew straight away as soon as I turned the ignition key. Has anyone any ideas what might be wrong or has had this happen to them? HELP Please

- Leaking clutch cover -- Marc Pope, 18:20:11 07/04/04 Sun
Knowing how soooo many tls out there leak around the clutch cover I set out to find out why. I removed the cover and the o ring from my 97 tls and cleaned everything up. I then put the cover back on and took my feeler guage and discovered a gap at the bottom of the cover. Either the cover is warped or not molded right by Suzuki, or possibly the metal sleeves keeping the cover bolts from going throught the cover are not flush. Anyway, I filled the o ring groove with blue silicon and pushed the o ring back into the groove being careful not to push it completely to the bottom of the groove along the bottom of the cover. I then put a little additional silicon along the inner edge of the cover o ring and allowed all this to set for a couple of hours before tightening the cover down loosely. I waited 24 hrs. before torquing the bolts down. I have not had any oil leak for over a thousand mile now. This winter when I do a major service on my tl I will try to discover exactly why this cover leaks and will pass on any info I might find.

After listening to my 97 tls rattling for some time I decided to check the valve clearances there was one that needed a 0.10mm thicker shim which I replaced all the tappet clearances where fine so I put the thing back together only to find it still rattled.
Any ideas what it could be, sounds like its coming from the rear cylinder head. The bike runs fine and has plenty of power.

- WHAT IS THE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK! Questions from a New-bie TL Owner! -- JC86RG500, 15:12:04 06/23/04 Wed
I just picked up a BLACK 1998 TL1000S with 13000 miles for a great price. It was adult owned and completely stock except for the YOSH RS3 slip ons. The following questions are for items that I intend purchase on a “BUDGET”. Any suggestions/tips would be highly appreciated.
FOR THE MONEY!
CLUTCH? What is the best clutch to use on 98 TL1000S for the money? Bernett or EBC? I went for a test ride before I purchased the bike and knew it needed a new clutch. While riding the bike, I had to let out the clutch way out before it catches. This helped me negotiate a better price on the TiLLeR.
CHAIN & SPROCKET SETUP! Should I convert from stock 530 to 520? What sprocket combination should I use. I heard that some people use 17-40 or 41 combo. My type of riding is mostly Twisty/Kneesdown roads, very very little stunt riding and some highway riding. Can anyone suggest what combo I should use.
“NOT” for LOOKS, “JUST” for HORSEPOWER! (Don’t care for the SOUND!) What COMBO (PCII, EXHAUST, AIR FILTER) produces the BEST Horsepower? POWER COMMANDER PC II ! I am intending to put the PC II because I read that it can be adjusted and tweeked more over the YOSH EMS. I rode the TILLER last weekend and understand the STUMBLING complaints at 3 and 4 thousand RPMs. AIR FILTER? What is the best Performing air filter out there for producing horsepower
BMC or K&N? EXHAUST? I read a lot of good things about the YOSH FULL SYSTEM. Does any one else have any suggestions as to what works well?
BLOCK OFF VALVES? Should I or should I not put them on? What is the purpose for this product (INTUATIVE) ? Is it to reduce the back firing on the TILLER at low RPMs?
BRAKES! After riding the bike for about two hundred miles this past weekend on some of the wildest twisty roads, I found that the bike’s brakes felt a little numb at times, not feeling any feed back. I have read a few things about converting to the six pisty 01 GSXR 1000 brakes. Do I need the master cylinder for these brakes as well or can I use the same master cylinder? I can find them used at a near by shop.
SUSPENSION SETTINGS: Can anyone suggest Frt and Rear street/track setup for the TILLER!. I heard a lot about the rotory suspension but don’t have the funding to buy the Lindermann setup or something like that at the time being.
TIRES: When I purchased the bike, the bike was running a mismatch set with a brand NEW Bridgestone front BT 012 and a NEW Mez ME4 rear. I intend to possibly match the set. What should I buy, a Matching BRIDGESTONE rear or Matching Mez ME4 front? I like tires that grip hard. What will work better BRIDGE or MEZ. Any input on this? I have ridden mostly on Mich Pilot Sports and Dunlop 207 & 208. But only have funding for front or rear tire.
OILS! Syth or Reg? 10/40 or 20/50? What weight should I go with. Upon purchasing the bike the owner told me that he changed the oil at 2500 to 3000 miles. He also added that all of the time he used a 10/40 weight but did not stick with a specfic brand just whatever was on sale.
MAINTENANCE: VALVES? Should I be planning to check the valves soon. I have saw web posting with copies from the SUZUKI Service Manuals. It states that valve adjustments should be checked @ 15000 miles. Does anyone know were I can find a USED (remember on a budget here) SUZUKI Service Manual and Supp’s?
Alittle about me!
I have been riding for the last 14 years and ridden about every sport bike out there from ZX7s, 900RRs, DUCKs, R1s RC51s etc. BUT only owned SUZUKIs. All my bikes were GSXR750s: two ’86, ‘91, ‘94 bought new and ’98. I currently own ‘86 GSXR750 and a RARE ’86 RG500 Gamma two stroke. And NOW a 98 TL1000S. I have always wanted a TL since ’97 but my loan officer said other wise=).
I apologize for being long winded but I am Thankful for your time and anticipated responses!
“SEEYA” on the road!

- My 2 cents-First-Prozac is really a friendly guy,it's just that he lives in a place with lots of illegal aliens so it affects him. Keep the stock set up for sprockets and chain and air filter. Get a PCII map done after you get a full exhaust-Yosh makes a nice one and it's not too loud to be obnoxious. I like the Metzelers best. Mobile 1 cycle oil, chuck the steering damper and throw on a Scotts when you get the dough. Now say this three times-Prozac is my friend. (NT) -- Gary B.-Mass, 17:30:53 06/23/04 Wed

- Concerning the clutch, get the OEM plates, but use Barnet Springs. Personally I hate the PCII, I'd rather map it with a YOSH box or a Factory Pro TEKA. As others said, remove the PairValve and install Block-off plates. I'd stick with a 530 setup, but go up 2 teeth in the rear. Going to a smaller front sprocket tends to eat the swingarm buffer. If you change to 6-pots, you need the master also. Yosh, M4, Akropovic, all good Full systems. (NT) -- Gary Foreman - www.tl1000.com, 09:23:35 06/24/04 Thu

- Rear suspension service. -- Marc Pope, 01:40:31 06/19/04 Sat
On one of the other TL chat boards a guy made the observation that all his suspension adjustments were not making a big difference. Once torn down he discovered all his needle bearings were dry and seized up. I thought since mine was a '97 model mine should be checked while I had the rear tire off for replacement. Sure enough, mine were not seized up but were very dry. Had I not serviced them they would not have lasted much longer. Most of the bolts were corroded to the bearing races, 2 so bad they had to be replaced. After I greased all the bearings. I polished the bolts and reassembled the parts with anti-seize compound. While at the local Suzuki shop I passed on my experience and was told this was a problem with several of the TLs they were servicing as of late and fully endorsed my fix with polish and anti-seize.

- TLS shock loosening! -- Dave, 18:53:00 06/22/04 Tue
Hi all,
I think I got quite a wierd problem here on my TLS: After about 2600k from new, the rotary damper mounting bolts, well one of them actually, loosened out of place so much as to protrude as much as two inches! The bolts are one right on top of the other on the front of the actual damper where it's mounted to the main-frame and can be tightened with a 14mm socket stuck to a (4" is enough) extension on a ratchet handle through the two holes on the left side of the frame right above the footpeg. At first I didn't notice that it had loosened, all I noticed was the bouncing-everywhere back end of the bike, as if there were no damper any more! When I tightened it back in place however, the different tightening on the bolt made quite a considerable difference on the dampening behaviour: if I didn't tighten it enough, the bike bounces around, and if I tighten it a bit more, the bike becomes almost totally stiff, as if it were a rigid dragracing frame!!!!! Does anybody know what's going on here please? Or maybe someone knows the torque settings of the said bolts? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as the bike is still under warranty and if something's going that far wrong, I can still go and say two good words to the very nice people at our local Suzuki dealer.
Thanks again guys.
Dave

- Some people have found that some oils encourage their clutches to slip, mostly full synthetics gets the complaints in that department. But as for me, my clutch slips no matter what goes in. Very disappointing when you park it and some scum bag, black leather wearing, two tooth, grease ball says "hey man, your rice bunner is making a puddle on the ground" CRRAAPPPP!!! Anyway, it has developed a small drip from what appears to be a "breather" hole that is just below the third bolt above the oil site window. Does not appear to be oil, and I think it is coolant. Is this the result of a bad seal around the shaft that drives the coolant pump?? Any other ideas? And what is involved to fix it, major or minor??? Thanks in advance for any response.... I have a TLR with some front end damage (headlight, guages, fairing stay, some bodywork, wiring harness, wiring harness from ignition to fuse box, etc.). If anyone has any of the above or other front end parts, I would appreciate hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.
Thanks.
Tracey

- It's that time of year again -- Joe V, 23:08:42 06/07/04 Mon
It's that time of year again. The largest sportbike rally in North America is being held in Parry Sound, Ontario on July 9, 10, 11. If anyone would like info on the rally please feel to e-mail me with your questions. It's a great time and about the least expensive and most fun weekends you will ever have! This year there is even an added bonus, my daughter is getting married at the rally! You can check out the rally web page at www.sportbikerally.com .

- wanted toknow if anybodyknew of a site, or company that had the rear suspension dog bones. I want to lower my TL1000R in the rear by 1 - 2 inches. Also if some body could give me a brief discription on adjusting the compressed spring on the rear of the TLR, advise would be greatly apprecieated. -- Jeremy A. Boucher, 20:41:20 06/13/04 Sun

- TL1000r TopGun Undertail -- J.B., 00:18:27 06/15/04 Tue
I installed my Extreme Graphics TopGun Undertail w/signals on my TLR ( all black) today. It looks nice but my brake lights aren't coming on.
Has anyone else had this problem with theirs? Do I need to buy a wiring kit for it?
