- Moving into the 21st Century and joining Facebook -- RBL's, Wednesday, April 24, 03:07:20pm
We've been saddened by the lack of participation at RBL Romantica. With our busy lives we understand that there's not enough hours in the day. We are hoping that moving to FB will generate more interaction between the RBLs since many of you already spend time there.
We'll leave this board here temporarily until we feel that the word has been spread. Don't look at this as goodbye to RBL Romantica, just as us moving to new digs.
There is a link on the FB page to our existing homepage so all of that information is still available. We intend to use some of our old pictures to set up albums for everyone to enjoy our memories with us.
Here is a link to our new home:

- Checking in -- Ronlyn, Sunday, April 21, 04:39:03pm
Hi Ladies! I don't get over here nearly as often as I'd like to, but I think of you all often and miss you!
Things are crazy busy for me between the boys, the new-ish job (Did I tell you I got a new job managing 6...soon to be 10 doctors? Step up from just the 1 I had before.) And in between all of that, I'm still writing. I finished a short story and submitted it to be included in an anthology, but I'm thinking I'm going to pull it back and offer it for free on my website as a prequel. You know, when I finally get this book finished. I've been going a thousand miles an hour in every different direction, but I'm loving it.
I updated my website www.carmencooknovels.com and included RBL in my "For Readers" section.
I hope everyone is doing well!
xo

- *Wave* -- Jolene, Thursday, April 11, 05:29:07pm
It's so quiet here thses days! Did you all go get a super secret FB group or something? :P
Curious what people are reading these days. Funny enough I don't have anything to read! I'm all caught up on the Lauren Danes, Maya Banks, Lora Leighs, Sherrilyn Kenyons etc. I'm not feeling like a historical right now. Just finished Linda Howard's Shadow Woman. I find her hit and miss in the last few years. But I liked it... kinda thought it read like a Bourne thriller.
Haven't read a new paranormal series in a while.... so any recommendations on that? I have to state that 1) I just don't like first person, and 2) I get bored of a series centered around one main character. I know I know. Get with the program right. BUT I have tried. And honestly I just don't like them. Ever! Not even the newer JR Ward series (and I lover her Brotherhood series... especially liked Lover at Last.
I might even be up for a good gov't/black ops/marine type series. Or a good romantic suspense. Just.... last month was historical binge. So not really into that right now!
Please HALP! What can I read? Lol. Why can't Lora Leigh or Lauren Dane magically produce an entire series overngiht for my delectation?? *sigh*

- Btw.... a secret FB group isn't an awful idea. I belong to secret miscarriage support group and enjoy that I can post there without friends reading. (sadly my first pregnancy ended in a missed miscarriage @ 11 weeks in February). I regret only lurking for so long. I loved dropping by here occasionally! (NT) -- Jolene, Thursday, April 11, 05:38:09pm
- Hey lady, glad to see you stopping by! So sorry to hear about the miscarriage, I've been through that myself. (((hugs))). I don't read too many paranormal books, but I have a few that I like. Before we get to those, have you read Susan Elizabeth Phillips? Contemporary books, but heartfelt, funny and just plain good. I didn't care for her last 2 as much as I liked her previous books. If you are in the mood for a funny contemporary, maybe try Heaven, Texas. I also like the Dara Joy futuristic series (first one is time travel/paranormal) starting with 'Knight of a Trillion Stars', her books are also great and hot hot. Some people can't get into futuristic, but these books all have a goal and each book gets you closer to reaching it....and they are different characters. Have you read any of the Christine Feehan 'Dark' books starting with "Dark Prince" ? They are also good! Hope this helps. (NT) -- Robin, Saturday, April 13, 04:43:50am
- If you liked Lover at Last and are up for more m/m romances you could always look at those. My first foray into m/m was when I was in a reading slump and went to see what some of my favourite authors who had been suspiciously quiet had been up to. Found one had switched to m/m and suddenly it was like finding a whole new library section again. The first time that happened was back in the 90s when I discovered all the US authors who aren't published over here. If you want some recommendations then let me know and I'll see what I can suggest. (NT) -- Louisa, Sunday, April 14, 04:37:18am
- Oh and before I forget... for a great m/m series that is paranormal wolf shifters AND marines .... Kendall McKenna. Strength of the Pack is the first book in a series and there are two more to come. (NT) -- Louisa, Sunday, April 14, 04:45:31am
- Hi sweets! Have you read Donna Grant? I really enjoy her Dark Sword and Warriors. Also, Lara Adrian's BREED series is a lot of fun. (((hugs))) (NT) -- Ronlyn, Sunday, April 14, 10:16:22am
- That's great! I hven't read any of those! I will check into them. Last night I bought Linda Howard's complete Mackenzie series (one ebook). I always meant to read it! I don't mind m/m at all. Depends on who's writing it. Some people suck at it others are amazing. Thanks ladies. :) (NT) -- Jolene, Sunday, April 14, 02:21:36pm
- Hey Jolene! Nope, we haven't started a FB site, but it might be an idea now that we all have something other than dial-up. I sure miss the group discussions! Reading - Have you tried Thea Harrison's series? It starts with DRAGON BOUND, has a different couple each time, and continues to build a world I love. Another author that does different couples each time is Alexis Morgan. I loved her warrior series. Let me know if you need more. *G* Paras are my favs at the moment. When I first started reading it was all historical but I think I burned out on them because I'll always pick up a para before an historical these days. (NT) -- Beaty, Wednesday, April 17, 11:23:46am
- I had to go look up the name of the Morgan series. It's called the paladin series. (NT) -- Beaty, Wednesday, April 17, 11:24:59am
- Thea Harrison is a new one to me! I'll look it up. I've read everything Alexis Morgan has written! Loved the Paladins. On the third Lara Adrian Breed books atm. Liking it so far! Yessss. A secret FB group so no friends can see what we post lol. I remember how lively the RBLs used to be back in the day. Awesome bunch of ladies! :) (NT) -- Jolene, Thursday, April 18, 02:19:42pm
- I would certainly join a FB group if there was one. I usually check in there daily, even if it is often for a flying visit. (NT) -- Louisa, Friday, April 19, 12:26:32pm

- Who Knew? -- Beth, Wednesday, February 20, 09:11:23pm
Hi,
I suppose you could call me a romance newbie. I actually stumbled across your site thanks to a mention in a book by Karen Moning. Who knew you would actually exist? Actually... who knew those covers were actual photos or at least inspired by real men? I always assumed they were some sort of "artist's rendering of an ideal male form". Where do they find these people?
I started reading romance about a year or two ago. I'm a CRAZY voracious reader. I can read most novels in an evening or two. I read... everything. I read the good (pride and prejudice, clive cussler, j.r.r. tolkein), the bad (beautiful creatures, the mortal instruments series, $0.99 kindle thrillers) and now the romantic. Even when I KNOW I'm reading drivel, I still end up finishing the book. It's one of those "I can hate myself in the morning" type deals :-) .
So, that said, I've been through Diana Gabaldon, Angela Knight, Karen Moning, Anita Clenney, The dragon kin and dragon fury series as well as Janet Evanovich (I could only take 8 books before it got old), sookie stackhouse and the philippa gregory henry the VIII books. I just couldn't get in to her war of the roses books.
I've read some more "modern" romances (down for the count) but I'm DEFINITELY more of a historical/medieval fiction type and there's something about the whole scottsman thing (yay kilts). I thought I'd ask you guys for help because I feel like I'm out of books!! I need something new to cuddle up with (besides my two cats). Any thoughts on authors etc. who write in this same vein? And when is Gabaldon coming out with In My Own Heart's Blood?? there have been teasers on her site for two years and that last book ended in a cliff hanger!
This is clearly a gargantuan post for your site so I'll say good night and look forward to hearing from you all.
Thanks!

- Hi, Beth. I was pretty much a historical romance reader prior to joining this site. I was introduced to those type novels decades ago - my first novel Shanna by Katheline Woodiwiss. I recommend you read Stephanie Laurens and Lisa Kleypas. The ladies here introduced me to J.D. Robb - the In Death series is an absolute favorite - you'll fall in love with the hero Roarke. (NT) -- Diane, Thursday, February 21, 05:56:11am
- Lynn Kurland writes in that time period. Some of her stories are "straight" historical, and have some paranormal elements in them. Mary Jo Putney's older historicals are fabulous (in my opinion). I tend to read mostly contemporary, & paranormal so I'm coming up short for historical reccomendations, but there are quite a few RBLs who read historicals can probably help you out. I'll go look some of my historical authors up and come back to list a few more. (NT) -- Ann

- Beth, I too found RBL thru KMM and even though I don't post here often, I do lurk a lot. Historical romance is my first reading love and there are so many great authors out there. I just went to a signing with Eloisa James and Juia Quinn, both good authors like all the others mentioned here. For others, you can check out the new releases link at the top of this page. They list all the new releases for the current month by genre. I find it a great help when looking for new things (but it can really hurt the wallet LOL) Welcome and hope to see you around (NT) --

- Hello Beth! I hope you never feel like you're saying too much in your post. We love discovering new - both stories and authors. And we absolutely love 'meeting' newbies! Welcome to our world of reading. Sorry I've been absent. I'm working a little more this tax season than in the past and I'm getting older. It's harder than it used to be. *G* Books. We know a lot about books. You sound a lot like me. When I first started it was all historical. I've now branched out and find myself needing variety. Johanna Lindsey was my favorite historical writer. Give her a try. Since your tastes are varied, you might like to try Janet Chapman's magical men. They are big hunks of men that travel through time and love, love, love their women. Another warrior writer that I love is Alexis Morgan. Her warrior series was excellent. Enjoy discovering all these wonderful new worlds. Oh - and I second or third or however many recommends you got on J D Robb. **sigh** Roarke... (NT) -- Beaty, Sunday, February 24, 12:03:37pm
- Hi Beth, WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME!! I, too, am a HUGH historical book lover and my FAVORITE OF THEM ALL is MEDIEVAL!!! So I hope I can help you out with some solid recommendations. I am going to have to go thru my Keeper list and see what I can find for you. I second some of the books that the other ladies have already mentioned. Julie Garwood has several medievals "The Secret" "Saving Grace" "The Bride" are my top 3 faves (she has other historicals too). Judith McNaught has several historicals that I have on my keeper shelf and the only medieval is "A Kingdom of Dreams". Excellent!! Lynn Kurland has several as well (already mentioned above) a few of my faves being "From this Moment on", "This is all I ask" and "When I fall in Love". No medieval collection would be complete without Teresa Medieros "A Whisper of Roses". Connie Brockway has the McClairens Isle series and I can name a few others for you too....I'm running out of room so I'll post inside. -- Robin

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving.Ours was pretty good.Had a couple things not turn out quite as planned in the food dept.,but it was still good and no one croaked after they ate it,so that's good.Hubby's Mom & stepdad have been staying with us for the holidays since then, and will be going home after New Years.I was pretty nervous about it at first, but so far it has been okay.He did have to make clear to her that if she wanted to see his sister for Christmas & such, she would have to meet her somewhere else, since neither one of us will tolerate her setting foot in our house.I miss my Mom desperately,as always, and wish she was here.Other than that,it's been a decent holiday season so far.I spent about $85 less than planned for my Christmas shopping for the kids.I SHOULD have spent even less, seeing as how the little imps have been tag-teaming us with their naughty behavior over the last month.
I haven't made time to really read anything lately, and I am hoping to change that after Christmas.Just wanted to drop in and wish you all a Merry Christmas, and I'll try not to be such a stranger!!!

- NOOK OR KINDLE? -- Robin, Saturday, December 15, 09:46:21am
Okay, I think I have enough Best Buy gift cards to get me an EReader....
So?
NOOK or Kindle?
I know that with NOOK you can share books with other Nook users. Can Kindle do that?
I'm also guessing I can check fb with my Nook?
Any thoughts?
Robin

- I posted on FB...but I'll post it here too. Get neither...get a Samsung tablet. It's $199 at Best Buy, right now. I got a Kindle Fire HD for my daughter for Christmas...and I hate it. If you've ever used a tablet, going to a Kindle, to me, is like going backwards. You can download the Kindle app on the tablet, and get all the same benefits. The tablet does so much more than the Kindle or Nook. So I now have an iPad, Kindle, and a Tablet...and if I was forced to have only 1, it would be the tablet...not even a contest. (NT) -- Heather, Saturday, December 15, 06:49:24pm
- I don't know... I have a Kobo Touch. I think it's available in the US as well as Canada. It uses the epub format. I also have a Samsung Galaxy tablet. I hate hate hate reading on my tablet. The whole reason I read on my ereader is the E-Ink. The screen is *not* backlit. So it literally looks like the printed word. It's sooo much easier on my eyes. Just like reading a book for me. While I liek my tablet I just can't read on it. The backlit screen gets to me. Just my personal opinion. :) (NT) -- Jolene, Saturday, December 15, 08:48:22pm
- Wow, thanks ladies. I appreciate the responses. My eyes are kind of sensitive as well Jolene, so I'll have to take that into consideration. I think the NOOK has one that is not backlit as well. The main sticking point for me is the weight of the reader, I want it light but I don't want it palm size because I would like it big enough to read with a comfortable font size that doesn't have me touching it to flip pages every 10 seconds :) (NT) -- Robin, Sunday, December 16, 05:13:49am
- I agree with Heather, I have e-reader, iPad, ipod touch, iPhone, iPad mini & I love them all. If lighting is a problem you can dim it, which I do when I turn the lights off for the night. I love that I don't have to be restricted to just one site to buy my books, as Heather said you can download the Kindle or Nook app & use either one & you can also use books from other people or places if you use ibook. I e-mail my daughter & friends a book & they are able to open it & start reading. You can't do any of that on the Kindle or the Nook, you must use their books. So for sure get a tablet or iPad. (NT) --
£inda, Sunday, December 16, 08:07:40pm
- You can do some sharing with the Kindle, but only if you are in the US. (NT) -- Louisa, Tuesday, December 18, 12:03:06pm
- Just an FYI...the Samsung tablet just went down in price...it's $179 at Best Buy and $169 at Costco. But I know you said you had a Best Buy gift card, so Costco may not be an option. Just thought I'd mention it. (NT) -- Heather, Thursday, December 20, 03:34:52pm

- NICE WALLPAPER! -- Robin, Tuesday, December 11, 04:24:27pm
Yep, nice wallpaper. 'Nuff said.
Hope everyone is gearing up for a great Christmas.
We have a few gifts/giftcards to pick up but I think the rest is about done. I'm so relieved that I got my office at home cleaned up FINALLY and it is so good to be able to walk in without junk everywhere.
Alas, it is the end of another reading year. I read about 60 books so far (about 5 per month) with about 12 being published in 2012 and about half being 'new to me' books. That was my goal this year to read as many new books as re-reads and I did splendidly well.
Now is the not-so-fun part and that is rifling thru and picking some to get rid of because I can't fit any more in my shelving unit.
I may end up getting an E-Reader this year for Christmas and then I won't have that problem :)
But until then....Let me ask. How many books did you read in 2012? Do you keep track? Any that you can say were definitely your NUMBER ONE fave of the year?
For me: Lynn Kurland's 'When I fall in Love'
Take care!
Robin

Newbie Alert - and probably a bit lame :-/ -- Patricia, Friday, November 30, 12:27:35pm
Hello ladies :-)
So good to find your site here, have obviously been living the life of a nun!! Im so new to this genre that I havent a clue whats going on. Obviously, as a paid up member of woman-hood, I have read 50SOG ... but have found Pamela Clare since and naturally fallen in love with every strapping stud she's introduced me to! I started with the contemporary ones and scoffed at the "old stores" of historical sauciness! What a complete idiot! Bloody hell - the MacKinnons have opened up a whole new world and now I find myself having exhausted Pamela's back cataglogue and no matter how much FB stalking I acctually do, she's adamant there are no more "secret" trilogies hiding anywhere ;-) Im still not convinced tho ... heehee
So heres the thing. Im home with pneumonia at the moment and getting very twitchy and hugely bored. I need more to read ... and for such a newbie, there seems to be a mountain to climb. Don't know where to start ...
Ms Clare has obviously set the barr very high ... where should my next step go in terms of finding strong stories, thrilling journeys and sexy-as-hell tinglings?
I promise not to sue if I have a coughing fit after reading a particularly good bit ;-)
lotsofluv

- Welcome. I was introduced to the In Death series by the ladies on this website. And I have to say it is the absolute best! The hero, Roarke, is IMHO one of the sexiest male characters ever written. I suggest you start with book #1 - Naked In Death - and read one after the other. The character development and stories are outstanding. (NT) -- Diane, Friday, November 30, 12:35:58pm

I find it hard NOT reading the best in romance any more. RBLers will lead you in the right direction. ALL of the above suggesions are right on track. You'll also need to check out Lora Leigh's breed series. Start with TAMING THE BEAST. Enjoy! I envy your first reading of these fabulous stories. (NT) -- Beaty, Saturday, December 01, 12:16:03pm

- Judy, a book review, weekend plans, blah blah blah -- Robin
, Saturday, November 10, 04:38:29am
I just finished a historical book that wins, hands down, for best first chapter!!
Secrets of a Wedding Night by Valerie Bowman
This is a new author, first book, and she shows a lot of promise.
"Lily Andrews, the beautiful, headstrong Countess of Merrill, is rumored to have authored a scandalous pamphlet. 'Secrets of a Wedding Night' has scared the ton’s young ladies away from the marriage mart. The young widow soon meets her match when recently jilted Devon Morgan, Marquis of Colton, issues her a challenge: write a retraction or prepare to be seduced!"

Good book, held my interest...great banter and witty repartee'. I think the ending might have been a little rushed with each person coming to the conclusion of what they really wanted...but none-the-less, I enjoyed this book.
I will get the next two books in the series as well.
I was so excited to read this book and I thought how much Judy would have loved it. Several times throughout the book I thought of Judy too. (Judy, we miss you, my friend!)
Got my niece coming down this weekend (9 years old now!) so we will be enjoying some baking, games and of course we have to dress up for our tea party!
After my niece goes home Sunday, I hope to go see the new James Bond movie, SKYFALL (yum yum yum, LOVE me some Daniel Craig!)
I also have the new Susan Elizabeth Phillips book that I've had since it came out in September I think...so I want to start that next.
What is everyone else reading and/or doing this weekend?
Robin

- Hi, kids... -- Merry, Tuesday, November 06, 02:29:47pm
Just checking in to say, *Yes, I'm still breathing!* Had some surgery Oct. 11, and am recovering well from that. Turned out that the swelling in my abdomen that I'd been complaining about since DECEMBER of 2011 had a direct cause - a benign (thank you, Lord!) cyst 14 centimeters (about the size of a large grapefruit or a small canteloupe) on one of my ovaries. They were able to do the removal laparoscopically, so I wound up with five 1-2" incisions, following day surgery. The first few days were -unpleasant- but I was released from care by the surgeon on the tenth day.
So, generally, I'm feeling much better now. I just wish the doc had been more willing to listen to me than to look at me and think, *She's not *swollen", she's overweight!* Yes, I'll be looking for another doctor. It's been a rough year, health-wise, and I'm hoping this is the last stage before whatever Normal is.
Just about halfway through a really good paranormal. Set in NYC, at a time after the non-humans *came out* and kind of took over society. Werewolves, Vampires, and Elves now run the world. Story of a young human woman, tops in Law School (Yale), who is hired on at a White-Fang law firm (run by vampires). She's assigned to one experienced attorney, who seems to have only one case, a 17-year-long arbitration over a will. Suddenly things about this boring case begin to get terrifying...
I'm really enjoying this, and would recommend it to anyone who likes paranormals with -you should pardon the expression- bite. It's *This Case Is Gonna Kill Me* by Phillipa Bornikova, and is, I'm assuming, first in a series. Hardcover, just out in September.

- IMHO Nothing like reading a book and having it come to a "happy ending", setting the book down and sighing with pleasure over all's well that ends well. I love the show Once Upon a Time. The acting, the costumes and settings AMAZING. Entertainment Weekly features a cover story about the show - and how important good triumphing over evil and happy endings are to storytelling. The show rewrites many of our favorite fables - stressing how ALL the characters - good and bad, basically want love. The show's MAIN hero and heroine are Snow White and Prince Charming - and their daughter (who is OLDER than they are on the show) and grandson (oh what that wicked witch did!). -- Diane, Friday, October 19, 12:37:44pm
In the pilot last year, Prince Charming was supposed to die savings his infant daughter - BUT 8 women in the Network's board room said NOOOOOO! "You cannot do this, you've taken away any chance of this show having a happy ending." So Prince Charming lives and continues to fight side by side WITH Snow White and his daughter to free his people from evil. I remember as a little girl my dad taking me to see Gone With the Wind. I was absolutely DISTRAUGHT when Rhett walked out on Scarlett. I kept telling my dad - we can't leave - he HAS to come back. (I do have to say the book Scarlett was a disappointment even though Scarlett did get Rhett back in the end.) Questions - how do YOU feel about books without a "happy ending"? Do you feel disappointed? What books have you read that don't have a "happy ending"?
[ Post a Reply to this Message ][ Edit | View ]
Replies:
- I'm conflicted about Happy Endings. Not that I don't want them - but I don't want them to be manufactured. But generally overall - I feel more satisfied if the book has a Happy Ending. Now, having said that - I read several series: ANITA BLAKE, THE HOLLOWS, IN DEATH etc.... where not every individual book has the stereotypical Happy Ending because the end of the book is the pause in the story arc, so I guess you might say the ending is "happy for now"? And that is OK because I know the characters have more to say, and I can let them rest while I wait for the next book. (NT) -- Ann
, Friday, October 19, 05:54:17pm
- I have to say I am a BIG fan of the HEA ending because when I read fiction I want to escape. That being said I agree with Ann in that it needs to be realistic to the story line and not gratuitous. To do it other wise kills the whole book for me and makes me less likely to investigate the authors backlist. (NT) --
Sandra, Friday, October 19, 06:13:00pm
- I will never get tired of a "happily ever after". Any more that is about all I read. Even my recipe books are supposed to have a happy ending LOL (NT) -- debbie O, Friday, October 19, 06:18:59pm
- If a book doesn't have a HEA I don't read it & if somehow I get tricked into reading one that doesn't I make up my own ending!!! LOL As for that TV show, I wasn't able to get into it!! LOL (NT) --
£inda, Friday, October 19, 06:35:15pm
- I enjoy the happily ever after in a book. I feel that I need that after spending so much time with the characters. But I'm also with the other ladies where if the book is part of a series and the end is a to be continued then I can live without the HEA. I've heard so much about this show but never started watching it. (NT) -- Rosie, Friday, October 19, 11:36:49pm
- I love happy endings and have to be in the right frame of mind for a bittersweet or sad ending. Sometimes I can read them, sometimes not. I actually quite liked the sequel to GWTT, the book anyway. The mini-series was dire. However if she didn't end up with Rhett I would probably have hated it. (NT) -- Louisa, Monday, October 22, 05:25:54am
- Ever try to find an actor or actress to play your favorite character? I belong to an in death message board. It's apparently been up for several years, and members (I'm a new member) have suggested different actors to play Roarke. But alas no one came close UNTIL Giulio Berutti - an Italian actor. He seems to come the closest in looks. The two particular ones I was thinking of today are Sunny's Chinatown in THE HARD STUFF anthology and Love's Prisoner by MaryJanice Davidson in SECRETS #6 anthology. (NT) -- Beaty, Thursday, October 04, 08:53:51pm
- There are very few that are re-reads for me. One however, is the story Invisible by Jeff Erno. The first time I read it, it brought me to tears. Probably because it hit so close to home with regard to the subject matter - bullying - and I have since re-read it a couple of times. I am sure there are other short stories I re-read, but none are springing to mind at the moment. (NT) -- Louisa, Monday, October 08, 12:39:50pm
- I'd count a few Linda Howard's, and a few Elizabeth Lowell's. I also like Liz Carlyle's short story in the anthology BIG GUNS. Hubba-freakin'-hubba! I am so hoping she writes MORE contemporary stories, but I've not found any by her. (NT) -- Robin, Monday, October 08, 03:34:23pm
- I just got an email from St. Martin's Press - suggesting I buy a series of books entitled ANYTHING HE WANTS. I went into Barnes & Noble to check it out, and these are e-books with like 32 pages, etc. The subject matter is about a rich, handsome, sexy billionaire who seduces a young woman, etc. etc. I did NOT like 50 Shades. I thought it poorly written with little plot which seemed to rip off every other romance novel I've ever read. It seems like EVERYONE is writing stories of this nature (iMHO I think they are poor attempts at trying to steal some of Roarke's allure). But it's the "fanfic", limited number of pages and $.99 price which really gripes me. What are your thoughts on the way the genre seems to be going with the advent of e-readers? -- Diane, Tuesday, September 25, 09:09:22am

- Hi Diane, I think like anything else - it has it's pros and cons: I think the advent of e-readers and hte independant e-publishers allows many struggling writers get their work published, and without that, we'd be missing out on Shelly Laurenston, Lora Leigh, Lauren Dane, Maya Banks, Chyenne McCay, etc. but I also think it allows struggling writers to get their work published - which is all I can say without being mean. Which we try not to do here. *lol* (NT) -- Ann

- Diane, I also received that email. Not talking about e-Readers, but about books in print, I don't care for anthologies or novella's that are only 90 pages. I try to avoid them as much as possible but I do get the ones from J.D. Robb because I have to have those stories. If it is a fave author, I may get it, but it has to be special. I remember that Julie Garwood put out "One White Rose" "One Pink Rose" little novella books some time ago and I bought them but they were soooo short. I believe Linda Lael Miller put out the 'springwater booklets' many years ago too, and then a big book to follow or a big book proceeded it. This isn't the first time that smaller stories have been put out as teasers for something else, etc. I also know that sometimes older books are re-published with a new cover and sometimes even a new title and re-released and then people get mad and feel duped. So, the publishing market has a lot of little quirks that I see, not related to E Readers. (pt 1) (NT) -- Robin, Tuesday, September 25, 11:48:03am
- I have to say I love ereaders. I've been a reader for almost 40 years. I've accumulated thousands of books in that time. I had totally run out of room for more books. Then came ebooks. Now they only take a bit of space on a hard drive. I will admit that I don't buy those 'one scene only' books unless it's an autobuy author for me. I love the fact that my favorite authors can now publish a wonderful deleted scene since it doesn't fit in the book. But a 30 page book is not enough room to get us to know and love the characters. That takes more words and some character building. (NT) -- Beaty, Tuesday, September 25, 11:49:24am
- PT2: I can't say much about E-Readers and whats out there because (shocker) I don't have one yet. I do know that some authors (Like Connie Brockway) are going to self publish because they have a story to tell that their publisher won't support. There is a book by Connie that I love (All Thru the Night) that she plans to write a sequel to, and when she self publishes that, the only way I'll get to read it will be to get an E Reader. That kind of sucks, but technology is what it is. I'd say that people need to know what they are getting for their $, so if it says its 25 pages and someone buys it, well, that is on them I guess. I guess its all fair game now-a-days...but I'm glad you mentioned this so that I can be double sure (in future) before I just buy something. Great debate question. (NT) -- Robin, Tuesday, September 25, 11:52:51am
- I started by anthologies just a few years ago when I realized some of my favorite authors were taking characters from a series and either continuing part of a character's story (i.e. Eve and Roarke) or taking a familiar character from a series and writing a small story for them (Stephanie Lauren's has done this) but they are a LOT longer than 32 pages! However, to get something out of the blue, and then see it only a few pages...(I read some of the reviews and many readers were VERY angry the stories were so short, and even only a few bucks to buy they didn't feel they got their money's worth). I think it also depends on the writer - Robb and Lauren's tell very good stories. (NT) -- Diane, Tuesday, September 25, 01:30:22pm
- First off I have to say that I liked the 50 shades books. I know they aren't well written but hey I did enjoy the stories overall. As for a 32 page book I don' t care who writes it you can't tell any kind of story in that # of pages! Even Robb & Laurens couldn't do it!! Needless to say I will NOT be buying those ??"BOOKS"?? LOL Great discussion Diane, thanks for bringing it up!! (NT) --
£inda, Tuesday, September 25, 05:19:18pm
- I'm definitely not a fan of anthologies, even if they are my favorite authors. I just don't get satisfaction out of mini-stories. And I definitely don't like 30-page "excerpts" as I will call them. There can't possibly be any story in 30 pages that would satisfy my taste. I would say that even $.99 is too much for that type of book. (NT) -- Rosie, Wednesday, September 26, 10:52:28am
- I am of two minds about short stories. On the one hand, it gives me a chance to find new authors to see if I like their style, on the other, short stories are rarely re-reads for me. When I am short of time a short story can be nice as a quick read. But if I want to really lose myself in a book then it is normally a long epic that I pick up. Few short stories can get my attention, though occasionally one manages it. (NT) -- Louisa, Tuesday, October 02, 01:29:54pm

- Hi Ann2, good to see you posting. I recently read a Lynn Kurland medieval book, an older Lori Foster book and finished Lisa Kleypas' newest Dream Lake. I liked the newest Kleypas, but wish they were LONGER. I have the lastest Susan Elizabeth Phillips to start but also a Linda Lael Miller contemporary, so I'm not sure which way I will go. - I'm coming to the experts....need suggestions please -- Robin
, Saturday, August 18, 05:42:11am
Okay ladies, could I please have some suggestions?
A friend of mine (who I have TRIED to get to read romances for years) read the Fifty Shades trilogy and really loved them...and its got her reading and reading and reading.
She prefers more of the HOT romances (but still only one man, one woman).
I've given her some, but I don't read the HOT and SUPER HOT ones like I used to - so I'm a little behind the times.
She has tried Sylvia Day and Megan Hart and likes them.
Can anyone provide any other suggestions? Authors, titles, whatever. She likes both historical and contemporary, and is okay with BDSM and stuff like that, but no menage'.
She is a little put off by paranormal but if you have a para in mind, I'll let her know. She did read Feehan's Dark Prince and liked it but doesn't think she wants to read another. Not sure if its the vampire aspect she didn't like, but she seemed to be okay with shapeshifting? Not sure....
Figured I would consult the experts!
Thanks!
Robin

- I've already given her Pamela Clare contemps and she could not put down Extreme Exposure! I am giving her the others in that series now. I also already gave her Lori Foster, Susan Johnson, and Erin McCarthy's Fasttrack series. Thanks! (NT) -- Robin, Saturday, August 18, 05:44:00am
- You ladies introduced me to Lauren Dane. That got me reading Maya Banks and Shayla Black, Lorelei James and Cat Johnson. I love Lisa Kleypas, Stephanie Laurens. Sooooo many books - soooooo little time. (NT) -- Diane, Saturday, August 18, 08:23:55am
- What about Joey W Hill's Natural Law. It's S/M but not more than two people. Some of Emma Holly's don't have more than two people but her books are so good she might even like all of them.*G* If I think of any more I'll be back. LOL (NT) --
£inda, Monday, August 20, 08:48:10am
- Shannon McKenna. She writes contemporary romantic suspense - and it's HOT. Lisa Marie Rice (also writes as Elizabeth Jennings). LMR is also very hot -- but you need a liberal suspension of disbelief as her heros tend to be very over the top Alpha Men (but man, they know what they want, and how to go about getting it! *lol*).
