- Sandra Brown's "Rainwater" ... -- Judy, Wednesday, November 18, 08:24:37am
Just to warn you, ReBeLs - this book is not a "traditional" romance. It is, however, a worthy read - a very interesting time and setting, a strong heroine, a melt-your-heart special needs child, a true hero, a powerful story ... I could not put it down.
If you're ready for something different, I strongly recommend this novella!

- I also enjoyed this book. I know it is a traditional read but...I thought it would be perfect present for those that do not like the current type of romances. Judy is correct once you start reading you really have a difficult time putting it down. (NT) -- CindyO

I have a good sampling of the ones you appreciated this year and will be announcing the contestants after year end. But if you see something you like, let us know!

- New books ... -- Judy, Friday, November 13, 08:01:50pm
Well, I finished the new Robb - Kindred in Death - and loved it of course! (I'm also listening to the CDs of her series in the car - I'm on the third book - so I've been immersed in Eve and Roarke and the gang.) Now I've started the new Howard - Ice - I'm disappointed that it's only novella length, but it's Howard so it pretty much has to be good. Then I have Roberts' new book in her Bride Quartet - Bed of Roses - still to read. Has anyone read that one yet? What new books are y'all reading? What ones have you read recently that you loved and recommend?
[ Post a Reply to this Message ][Edit]

- Hey Judy! Eve, Roarke and the gang are so worth listening to. However, I was disappointed in Kindred. It just didn't do it for me. I'm looking forward to "Missing in Death" which should be out on the 24th. I want to see some new 'family' interaction which I felt was missing in Kindred. Just finished ICE. Lots of action but way too short. *G* This is a common statement for me, tho. I enjoyed BED OF ROSES more than VISION IN WHITE, the first in the series. They are both very good. Right now I'm in the middle of about three different books. I can't seem to sit down and finish any of them. I hate when that happens! (NT) -- Beaty, Saturday, November 14, 04:00:43pm
Hey Judy I highly recommend Sandra Browns new book Rainwater. It is usually not my cup of tea but I find it very hard to put down. This is a depression era story and I feel very well done. Put this in your holiday

- Well, I just bought Kindred and the anthology 'in death' as well, and I won't read them for a few months because I'm just now in the middle of "promises in death" and I am so enjoying it!! I have "Vision in White' (the first in the series) in my car to go to the UBS....didn't care for it that much. BUT I want to read them cuz I love Nora and have "bed of roses' on order thru the library....so I can't answer your question, but I hope I like it better than the first one. - Veterans Day, Traditions, the holi-daze, and Roarke -- Robin, Wednesday, November 11, 07:11:47am
HAPPY VETERANS DAY TO ALL! I'm so thankful for those who serve or have served, and for those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. My brother is serving now, and I have worked with many veterans too.
Also today, I've got the holidays on my mind!
I've got today off and the dh and I are going to go Christmas shopping!
I'm so excited.
One year (and only once in my life can I remember doing this), a few years ago, we got our shopping done before Thanksgiving.
Wrapped it all. Got the tree up on Thanksgiving weekend. Got my cards ready to be mailed by Dec 5. IT WAS SO AWESOME!! The only thing I had to do in December was go to parties, have my nieces over to help me bake and watch corny old tv movies and old cartoon specials about the season, and most of all, read books!!! I SO want to do that again this year.
Anybody have any traditions they look forward to at the holidays?
Watching Chevy Chase in "Christmas Vacation" is one for us...as well as singing Karaoke on Christmas Eve with my dh's family (sounds weird, but its a blast!)
Anyhow, I just finished a mediocre book and I really NEED a good one. I've been holding my hardback "Promises in Death" by J.D. Robb and I think its time to get it out and read it now. I KNOW that will whet my whistle, I mean, hello? Its Roarke!
Have a great day everyone!
:)~
Robin

- The Fading Lands books --
, Friday, November 06, 05:13:36pm
Soooo I've been a complete and utter slacker lately about posting, reading and even getting three bloody minutes to sit and do something I wanted to without interuption (sigh). Sorry to have been so absent. I do like the wallpaper and even as I voted for my lovely Hercules, knew to the bottom of my toes that the Highlander would win.
I commented a bit down the board somewhere about a particular book that was due out in late October by CL Wilson not being on the list of upcoming books and Beaty said she had not realised it was a series to note.
Boy, is it ever. The first book is Lord of the Fading Lands, followed by Lady of Light and Shadow, King of Sword and Sky and (just released) Queen of Song and Souls. Now these names are just terrible to remember, so I think it is easier to remember the authors name. What is it with all these long winded, sort of the same sounding book titles lately. The other series that I have immense trouble remembering the titles are the Kresley Cole ones.
Anywho, despite the nutty, hard to remember titles, the books are wonderfully rich and gorgeous to read. The story does not finish in each individual book, but sort of like KMM's fever books has a big storyline that is taking a few books to finish. The main couple are Ellysetta and Rain and if you like fantasy type romance (think Warprize) stories these are for you. Rain Tairen Soul is the king of the Fey and the only Tairen Soul left who can change into the mythical Tairen (large catlike creature). We have evil Eld mages causing trouble, fated mates that don't necessarily have an easy time getting with the program and a huge mini-Tolkien type world to caper around. I like that there is a plot, you can sort of see where we're going, but not quite sure how it's going to work, lots of twists and turns and people with foibles and worries, not perfection everywhere. It's not as dark as the Anne Bishop Blood Jewels books, but has that sort of richness in the writing and more developed worldview.
Try them if this is the sort of book you love.

Wish us luck, ladies, please! -- Merry, Friday, November 06, 02:59:13pm
Another book signing is coming up tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon. Georgia Evans/Rosemary Laurey is visitng from Ohio to sign copies of her Brytewood Trilogy (*Bloody Good*, *Bloody Awful*, and *Bloody Right*) as Georgia, and will be signing three of her Laurey titles as well...
The goodies are baked (well, except for the Maple Spice Cookies - the dough is chilling in the fridge even now), the space is cleared, the desk is ready, and I think I'm set.

Bo, Thursday, November 05, 04:03:36pm
Hi ladies!
I LOVE this WP.*G* A welcome sight to come 'home' to,after so many weeks away! It feels like forever since I've been here, and I do apologize to anyone who's been trying to EM me-I've got a sneaky little virus on my 'puter that won't go away, even after hubby's fiddling. My own fault, really, since some of my Norton stuff was out of date.EEK! Hopefully he'll get a chance to fix it soon.He is still on his Mr.Fix it handyman kick, even more so,now that we see all the projects that need doing. It's getting scary, how focused he can be.And WTF did it have to take so many years to achieve this???
So much has happened since I last posted about possibly moving! We HAVE moved.Just shoot me,we ARE living with my Mom for now(this is mutually hellish for all parties concerned, thank you very much)until we get the house we bought fixed up! Things sort of fell freakishly into place all around for us,at what seemed the 11th hour, and we found a place that will suit our needs, once we fix it.It's a wreck,we can't even live in it right now,but it has LOTS of potential and the space, location, price, etc.,that we need (half a mile from my Mom's place) and I really like it.It's going to take a lot of hard work, but the upside to that is that since we are basically starting with a blank slate we can do what we want.I will say, though, that it has a cellar that creeps me out to no end.Think Silence of the Lambs-'It puts the lotion on its skin,it does what its told' sort of confined space, which I,in all my claustrophobia, can't tolerate very well.Hubby says he'll paint it to make it more homey,LMAO.I'll have to maybe do some before & after pics eventually,if I ever get free time, what's THAT? Between fixing up our new house & all the renovations at my Mom's,I am lucky to do anything that doesn't involve a saw, hammer, drywall, etc.
I am about a third of the way through Echo in the Bone, and
while I am finding some kind of comfort in spending time getting to read even a chapter or two a night, after so much to do during the day,I have to say that I am feeling as though Lord John has taken over a little.I find myself impatient to get back to Jamie and Claire, even Roger and Brianna. It is still a good book, however, and I am enjoying it.
Happy Birthday to those I've missed, and in case I don't get back on before the holidays (we have net at our new house, yet not at Mom's,b/c the neighbor's tree blocks reception-silly! But how pathetic are we that the first thing we do at the new place is get net hooked up,LOL.) I hope you all have wonderful times with family & friends!

If you could open your card it would say:
When life is full and friends are far away, It's hard to keep in touch in normal ways.
Faraway friendships are friendships still. Put on hold - but hard to kill.
I think of you often. I pray that you're fine. I know if you need me you'll give me a sign.
From this faraway friend I wish you the best, And hope your birthday is better than the rest.
Take care of you while you're on the go. You're precious and beautiful and I miss you so.
Happy Birthday, Vickie! ((((HUGS)))) | |

Are there any Mary Jo Putney fans out there? -- Beaty, Sunday, November 01, 06:47:33am
I've been having this scene recycle in my head. I think it's from a Putney story. It has a big garden and a large cat (leopard, jag, etc.) Does anybody recognize it?
Thanks!

Just a bit of a tease this morning. Wanted to give you a few hints on the actor you voted #1 RBL favorite. In my opinion, he stepped out of a romance novel - the literal personification of many of the heroes our favorite writers have described - a dream come true. E-book question --
Ģinda, Thursday, October 29, 11:44:04am
Since this is a relatively new field I thought it would be nice to share with each other where we buy our e-books.
I use Books on Board most as they have a good reward program.
http://www.booksonboard.com/index.html?ebooks=ebooks
So come on ladies give us your choices & why you like them more than some of the others.

- Ok I've heard of e-books, of which you've spoken at times, and audio books. What can you tell me about audio books? Where do you get them? What type of machine do you need? Are they similar or the same as normal audio tapes? etc. etc. (NT) -- Gayle Lee, Thursday, October 29, 05:36:34pm
- I use Fictionwise (owned by B&N) a lot. They have mass market books and a lot of the small press (like Samhain, Ellora's Cave etc.). They have discounts, a rewards program (which I haven't bothered to try and figure out yet) and they will let you download and they keep a copy of your purchases on a "bookshelf" so if you lose your download, you can get it again w/o re-buying it. They sell multiple formats too. (NT) -- Ann, Thursday, October 29, 06:11:56pm
- Audiobooks are wonderful! *G* And very addicting. I joined Audible.com. Audio books can be very expensive, but if you're a member you get one credit each month for your membership fee that allows you one book. Everything else on their list is at the membership discount of 20% off. And they very often run discounts that make the cost about the same as a trade size book. The books are a download (and you HAVE to have a fast interned connection for these). Audible keeps all my books in "my library" so I can download them whenever I need them. I use an ipod for listening. It allows me the freedom to be doing just about anything while I'm reading. But you can play them with the free software from Audible or using the free progrom Itunes. Feel free to ask any questions - I'll be happy to help you. (NT) -- Beaty, Thursday, October 29, 07:30:49pm
- Thank you ladies. I don't know where I would be without you!! LOL (NT) -- Gayle Lee, Friday, October 30, 12:58:45am
- I have an ipod touch and read mainly off that now. I really like All Romance ebooks as they have a buy so many and get one free option. I also like My Bookstore and More via Samhain Publishing and Loose Id. I also buy off the smaller publishers like Liquid Silver Publishing and MLRP. :) -- Sarah, Sunday, November 01, 05:06:23pm

For those of you who read e-books? --
Ģinda, Wednesday, October 28, 10:57:48am
While we were in VA we were discussing the fact that some of us had been reading e-books on our computers & have now purchased e-readers but the format we purchased don't always work on the reader. So they have to be converted or purchased again, which can prove costly.. So Heather (our genius of the e-world..) found this GREAT program that works on both PC's & Mac's it is GREAT & to top it off it's FREE!!!
You can go to the URL below to check it out;
http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/wiki/WikiStart
Check it out ladies, I think you'll love it as much as we do.

A Game.... -- Beaty, Wednesday, October 28, 06:11:29am
Why? Just because. *G* I'm not sure the RBLs are game players, but it can't hurt to try.
Someone comes up with game subject (i.e. I'm thinking of....) and everyone tries to figure out who/what the subject might be. They do this by asking questions with a yes/no answer. Here's a sample:
Game Subject: I'm thinking of a Laurell K Hamilton character.
Yes/No Question: Is this character a 'bad guy'?
So - let's play a bit RBLs! After just returning from a RBL get together it's amazing what we readers remember about our stories. *G*
So - using the above game subject start your questions. The answer to the first question above is no.
Come play with me!

I was ordered to post when I got home so everyone would know I made it safely. I'm home, had my bath, put on comfy clothes, set up my computer and then reported in. Aren't I a good girl? *G*
We had such a marvelous time! Wonderful food - both the 'going out' kind and the home cooked variety. I got a new recipie from Judy for red sauce that was so simple she didn't want to share it with me. I think I convinced her that simple is better. *G* Ann did chicken and Linda did bisquits and gravy. All to-die-for.
A few of the ladies spent a couple of days site-seeing. I just took it easy.
If you ever get a chance to spend a few days with your fellow RBLs - jump on it! There is nothing better than sitting up till the wee hours discussing one of your favorite passions with people that love it just as much as you do.
Hope the rest of your vacation was as wonderful as the first part ladies! Any more pg beds? *G*
