My mom passed away -- Bo, Monday, February 21, 02:32:00am
Hi all.Some of you already know my Mom passed away last Sunday,the 13th.She was 74.She went in her own home,in her own bed,in her sleep.I am shocked,angry,confused and feel so lost and alone without her already.I need her to tell me how to do all this stuff,as ridiculous as that sounds.We had her funeral Thursday,the 17th,and she was cremated Friday.The burial is set for Tuesday.I am having my Grandma's urn placed in with my Mom's.She kept her close all these years,I think they ought to be together still.I feel like i am living a nightmare,some alternate reality and that maybe i will wake up sometime.My husband has been a rock for me,even though he is much more shaken than I realized at first.I am ashamed to say that,while i knew he cared for my mom,i didn't realize the depth of his love for her until now,when it's too late.The kids are handling it okay,although my 3 year old gets it a lot more than I thought she would,and did have brief hysterics one night.For my part,i feel numb,and like I am going to f*ck up my kids and the rest of my life royally without my mom here to guide me.I know if I listen hard enough inside myself she will still help me as she has always done,but i miss her so much,and it hurts so bad.I am 36 years old with 2 kids of my own,yet i don't feel the slightest bit like a grown-up.I feel like I am missing some basic part of myself I need in order to function,to be real.

She was an amazing,wonderful person,with a spine of steel and a heart of gold.She was highly educated,with a BA and an MA,and was a teacher for many years before I was even born.She was well traveled,visiting Europe back in '66 and '67,seeing everything from Windsor Castle to the Parthenon.She survived an abusive marriage,my Grandma's death,and a very nasty divorce,all while raising the most spoiled,ungrateful kid you can imagine,all by herself.She read to me every night when I was little,she is the reason I love books.She took the secret of The Look with her;I doubt I'll ever be able to compel my kids to fear,anger,and instant obedience in that single glance even half as well as she could.She loved animals,gardening,and sewing.She loved pink.She gave regularly to the charities that were dearest to her.She sacrificed her own happiness and security for me countless times,in countless ways.She was my safety,my knowledge,my everything.The best parts of me are from her.She is missed desperately,and loved deeply and forever.

- (((((((((Bo))))))))))) I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. My mom was only 60 when she passed away so I can guess a little of what you are going through. It sounds like your Mom was an awesome lady, and how great that you get to carry on her legacy. You may feel lost, but she instilled in you all that you need and its there for you to draw on, I know it. As I sit here with a tear in eye for you and what you guys are going thru, I wish I had something profound to say, something that would help you, but I can only offer a virtual hug and to let you know that I'm standing with you, in spirit. Okay now I have conundrum :-). Do I immediately go buy all of the books from J.D. Robb "In the death series", because yes, Roarke is pretty cool :) ! (and I quite like Eve too), Or do I get completely distracted by Gabe? Should I stick to my original quest to catch up on last years books? Or try to read all the new releases for this year? decisions, decisions ha ha , life is good, thanks you guys! Having so many books to look forward to is such a good thing. - I'd say get several of the In Death books & read one in between a few of the others you want to read.. Of course Gabe is a must too. As for the birthday list just send me your birthdate & where you live (city & state or just state) & I'll add you to the list. - I've been buying them 6 at a time, Roberta, and reading another book in between each set of 6. I just got another batch day before yesterday. I'm currently reading Creation in death. - Roberta...they only get better...but I agree with Diane...buy only so many at a time. Go ahead and get distracted by Gabe...but you know, that's a series too. The I-Team Series...they stand alone, for sure, but I would start with the first I-Team book "Extreme Exposure", then "Hard Evidence", then "Unlawful Contact" (my personal favorite...Marc is YUMMY), then "Naked Edge"...and there's a novella in there somewhere, but I can't remember where. Roberta, You have to read the In Death Series by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) there are already 38 of them if you count the anthologies. They are GREAT & while they could stand along to really get the feel for the characters you should read them in order. The story she builds in there relationships & the journey she takes us on is just WONDERFUL!! The best thing is that people who thought they would never like these books have come to LOVE them!!

- I agree with Linda - I'm not a paranormal reader and these books are set in the near future (around 2060, I think) - I tried several times to "get into" the first one, and then Beaty finally told me to just "bleep over" any futuristic element that bothered me. Now I love the books and wait eagerly for the next one to come out - this month! Lin's right about reading them in order too, as the characters' relationships develop over time. There's also the fact that Eve Dallas, the main character, is an excellent detective - these are really good detective stories in addition to everything else. - I was one of the slackers. While I like some suspense and I really like futuristic, I was putting this series off because it just seemed like another plot type of book but I was so wrong! Heather finally talked me into it (Thank you Heather) and while the first few were a little gritty for me, I can say that I enjoy this series immensely!!! They are character driven for the most part and these books will take you on a roller coaster ride of emotions too. I've laughed, cried and felt that ol' punch in the gut. GREAT GREAT SERIES. OK who recommended Marie Force to me? All I can say is WOW I LOVED her book.

This is the first time in quite a while that I couldn't put a book down. I finished it in 4 days & for those who know me that is fast! The title of the one I read was/is Line of Scrimmage, it's about a football hero & his wife, trying to get back together.

All I can say is, if you haven't read her RUN DON'T walk to the book store or online e-book store & get it right away!

- Had a wonderful time on Turks & Caicos, but the actual travelling was a nightmare. Some of you authors write about the travelling experience. Going Scranton we made our Charlotte connection by only 15 min because as departure in Scranton was held up an hour. BUT it was the return that was nightmarish. Providenciales airport is tiny and must have had thousands in it standing & waiting (3 stall ladies room & men's room was quite the experience! - they plan to build new airport) screaming kids, frustrated parents - people coughing, sneezing and OBVIOUSLY annoyed!   - Our plane was more than 1/2 hr. late taking off. Got to Charlotte had a tremendous immigration line wait (they only asked if we brought in any fruit and vegetables!), then we had to retrieve our checked baggage & "re-submit" it, then go thru security AGAIN which took 45 chaotic minutes more (hubby has artificial hip and set off the bells & whistles - they held him 15 mins before even starting to "frisk" him - then we had to get to the next to the furthest gate - raced thru the airport, couldn't have "relaxed" dinner at the Fox restaurant, no time - then boarded and waited a 1/2 hr for takeoff! Plane lands in high winds. cold and snow! Driving home trucks were barrelling down the highway kicking up road caca blinding us several times. And I missed the vote!!!! Our weather has been so crapy this winter that I've gotten use to driving 35 mph just so I won't slip off of the road. Not that there is a lot of traffic when I drive into town in the morning.

Now that the roads are totally cleaned off I set the cruise on 60 instead of my usual 70 because 60 felt like 100. *G* Very weird.

Hope everyone else's winter is going better than mine.

- We've been all over the map in Colorado, Beaty. The fall was so warm and mild that I was getting veggies out of my garden through the first week of November. December was warm. Then at the end of Jan., we had a cold snap with record-breaking low temps (-25 here at my house). That was followed by a week in the 50s, and then more snow and down to -11. How close is it??? The American Historical category has just two votes separating all three nominees. The Contemporary Romance category has a tie, and they're just one vote ahead of the third nominee! The Series category has just two votes separating all three nominees. The Futuristic Paranormal category has a two-way tie. The Time Travel category has only two votes separating first and second - ditto for the Unique Paranormal category. The Anthology category has just one vote separating first and second. There are only two votes separating Favorite Hero - yes, someone is giving Roarke a real contest! And the Favorite Heroine is a two-way tie! The Hottest Book category and the Favorite Re-Read each have only one vote separating first and second.

That's eleven categories that could be determined by just two or three votes on the last day! Get those votes to me - last chance - the polls close tomorrow night!!!

- I am not sure if I noticed what you noticed....but I noticed that the POV was mostly the heroines. I don't think we got inside the hero's thoughts until the last 3 chapters of the book. I think Lisa Kleypas did that in her Sugar Daddy contemp series. Janet Evanovich does it in the Stephanie Plum series too and she writes it in first person. I liked it, and I have to say that it takes a talented author to let us know what these other characters are feeling without them telling us....is that what you meant? I just finished a great new Paranormal from Jennifer Ashley - the start of a new series called SHIFTERS UNBOUND -- Ann , Saturday, February 05, 06:01:34pm
The title is Pride Mates. It's about shifters and humans and the conflict between them. At first I thought it was going to be similar to Lora Leigh's Breed series, but it's not.

I mean while there are only so many ways to generate conflict between shifters and humans, Jennifer's new series is just different enough. *g* The heroine has a spine, stands on her own and is no pushover. It's been awhile since I've been drawn into a book as I was with this one, so I decided to post and let people know. *g*

Also - the Diva of Romance category is VERY close among several authors, and this category is determined by nominations ONLY - NO final voting. So if you have a fave author you want to be named Diva, send me her name - even if you don't nominate another thing for the Hughies! Your nomination in this category will be critical this year!

On another note - we've been trying to find a fit for historicals like Liz Carlyle's ONE TOUCH OF SCANDAL and Amanda Quick's Arcane Society novels. We've decided that they belong in the Unique Historical category, and will amend the description of that category to read: a romance set in the Medieval time period, a romance about Vikings or pirates, a unique location, a "Gothic" romance, etc.

I haven't been this excited for a story since Sam and Alyssa!! I will definitely be getting it this week.

Anybody watching American Idol this year? I could always count on Leiha to chime in on AI. I said I was done after last year because it was dull, but there are a lot of good singers this year so far from what I've seen. Am I getting sucked in??

I watched an hour of the first night but won't watch again until they get to Hollywood week on 16 Feb...thats my fave part of it. I think Jennifer Lopez has to stop being so nice and letting people thru just because they cry. LOL

Have you sent me your Hughies Nominations yet??? If not, why not take a few minutes this weekend and do so - remember, I have to have them by Monday at 11 p.m. east coast time!

A couple things have come up from the nominations already received:

1) First, the 2010 Romance Releases list had Emma Holly's November release, DEVIL AT MIDNIGHT, listed as a contemporary; it is, of course, a paranormal and should be nominated in the FAVORITE VAMPIRE/WEREWOLF/SHAPESHIFTER ROMANCE category. (I should note, however, that I will count any book no matter what category you nominate it in - I will count it for the correct category.)

2) Catherine Anderson's INDIGO BLUE, an American historical, is a republication of a 1992 release. Since we had not had this happen before, we have now come up with a new rule for rereleases: If a book has not been rereleased for at least 15 years, it IS eligible for a Hughie. So INDIGO BLUE is eligible to be considered this year.

Yes, it's time to choose our favorite romance books of 2010 for the Thirteenth Annual RBL Romantica Hughie Awards!

The Hughie Awards process has two parts - first comes the NOMINATIONS part; then, once the nominations have been received and tallied, the FINAL VOTING takes place. The NOMINATIONS part of the Hughies process is important, because ONLY the TOP THREE nominees in each category will be eligible for the FINAL VOTING.

Rules for Nominations

1) Some of you have already received a Nominations Form by email. If you have not received one, just click on my name above to get a blank email form. Then highlight the categories listed below, and copy and paste them on the email. Type in your nominations and send this e-mail to me.
2) You may nominate as many books/authors/characters in each category as you want. You do NOT have to make nominations in every category.
3) The books must have been published in 2010.
4) Please include the titles of the books and the authors' names.
5) The DIVA OF ROMANCE! category differs from the others in that THE WINNER OF THIS CATEGORY WILL BE DETERMINED ENTIRELY BY HOW MANY NOMINATIONS SHE RECEIVES!!! In other words, we will not be voting on the top three nominees in the VOTING part of the Hughies process. We are getting 4-6 inches tonight from what I understand....and other areas might get up to 8-10....so I have to take what I can get....but it rained since last night and if it just could have been about 8 degrees cooler, we could have had ALL THE SNOW THAT I'VE BEEN MISSING! Long time, no post! How are you all? I've been busy as usual to those that know me. My mom has been ill and I've been her main caretaker. She finally went back to work last week and got RIF'd.   - And how fun to have a 'story' surrounding the birth. Each year my mother would sit us on her lap on the day before our birthday and tell us 'our story'. "I remember that it was 6 oclock in the morning and your dad had just left for work. The neighbor, Donna Joe, had come over for hot cocoa and ......" For those of you who love historical romances - I watched a period piece last night on Masterpiece Classic entitled Downton Abbey. I highly recommend it.   - I'd read in the paper they were going to "re-visit" Upstairs/Downstairs. I'm looking forward to the update. Did you happen to catch the modern day Sherlock with Benedict Cumberwatch. Hi all. While I'm waiting patiently for the new crop of books coming out over the next few weeks, I did a re-read over the weekend. "Where Dreams Begin" by Lisa Kleypas.

Lisa Kleypas is one of my auto-buy authors, and I have all of her books and just enjoy her writing so much!! This book has a special place on my keeper shelf and its a fantastic book.

I'm so glad that when I read this book again, it held up to my remembrance...meaning that I thought it was great the first time I read it and I feel the same way now. It is kind of sad when you re-read a book on your keeper shelf and for whatever reason, it wasn't as good as you remember. But we won't talk about those today...

What I wanted to ask today is: Can you name a book or two that is as good today as the first time you read it?

Besides "Where Dreams Begin" by Kleypas, I'll add in a few more:

"McKenzies Mountain" by Linda Howard. I read this at least once a year and it never disappoints.

Elizabeth Lowell's "Fire and Rain" "Outlaw" "Granite Man". Great little series!

- Hi Beaty!! Happy New Year to you too! I don't make any promises or resolutions anymore cuz they never last, but this year, I'd like to do something healthy for myself each day. I always drink 8 glasses of water daily, so I've got that one down. My biggest problem (after cookie addiction) is exercise, even just walking. I have to get moving, not for weight but for cardio/heart health. My dh is a gym rat and can't understand how anyone could not love to spend 3 hours at the gym every day...LOL.
