SEX/LOVE SCENE RATING
Limp=> Bad, little or NO SEX AT ALL!
Erect==> Good sex toward the end.
Boner===> Good sex half-way through and thereafter.
STIFF====> Good sexual tension throughout the book, and when it happens, you feel you've been there already.
HUGH=====> GREAT SEX in the first 1/4 of book and throughout the book.

  I've been bemoaning the loss of historical romances in general, and of author Marsha Canham in particular, for over a year now - you're all probably sick of hearing my gripes. But I just discovered a blog post made about a year ago by Marsha herself, and it seems to back up what I've been saying ... that publishers don't want historicals anymore (even though readers do!). Here's a quote from Marsha's post:
  
  "Its a scary prospect, returning to the publishing world after a four year absence and hearing nothing but bad news all around. The publishers are all in a slump, romances have taken an alarming skew downward, with the kind of swashbucklers I like to write being hit the hardest. Seems everyone wants vampires and cute girlie diary stuff, or contemps that harken back to the 150 page quickies...which I would feel about as comfortable writing as i would stabbing my fingers with forks every day. So many authors who started the same time as I did have not had contracts renewed or have simply dropped out of sight...the fiction pendulum appears to be swinging way to the left with no sign of returning. I give kudos to those who were able to switch genres, either to contemp or crime fiction or Brigit Jones type stuff...but I'm just an old dinosaur who still has Errol Flynn swinging through my rigging lines *smiles*."
  
  Why don't publishers realize that romance readers read a variety of sub-genres??? Did they ever stop to think that maybe "romances have taken an alarming skew downward" because they're all publishing the same stuff and readers want some other stuff too???

  • My critique partner and best friend has a book coming out in April. She signed a three book deal. Set in Scotland, historical paranormal. The first one is called Lord of the Isles by Debbie Mazzuca. I know for a fact publishers are looking for the next Karen Moning. Unfortunately for historical writers, contemporaries are the in, but 6 months ago, they were not and writing a vampire book was a sin. Everything changes, be patient. Stephanie Meyers made vampires popular in the media. But those of us who have been reading for awhile know all about vampires. I hear rumors about Outlander finally being produced into a movie.       • Sorry, most editors will tell you those books don't sell and a paranormal historical is still considered historical. I like pirate stories. I was hoping the Pirates of the Caribbean would stir interest, but it didn't. Yes Outlander is a time travel but it's more historical than most historicals. I'm not a regency fan, but those books sell because they have a huge following. Someone once told me its the 'ton' that keeps people reading, feeling like you're a part of a society past.   • I too enjoy historicals and I get tired of the same thing over and over. Right now its vampires and para, but last year or the year before it was romantic suspence and I got so sick of crimes and robberies!!! I still see good quality historicals by Kleypas, but I agree, the list is becoming shorter and shorter each month for 'historicals'....and its been that way for a while now.   I wanted to get your ladies opinion on something I received today in the mail.
  
  In my opinion it's a batch of bull..... but what's yours?
  
  Finally, we don't know if you've heard about the recent Federal Trade Commission and IRS rulings, but they have a lot to do with authors. Sigh... Apparently, the FTC has ruled that people who blog book reviews have to disclose whether they received the book as a gift. It's now a violation of several laws to offer a favorable product review on a website or blog if there was a "gift" involved (including a free copy of the book, or an Advance Reading Copy.) While we think it's ridiculous, you'll probably start to see disclaimers appear on websites. Our own will be included as soon as we figure out what to say. The IRS, on the other hand, has ruled that giving out our swag could be construed as a "raffle" or "lottery" because we base the drawing on a limited number of people (like all of you newsletter recipients.) We're not quite sure what to do about that, because we LIKE giving you all swag.

    • Ches, FTC stand for Federal Trade Committee and yeah it's just us in the US. I talked to someone else who has monthly drawings and reviews, and they said that what they wree probably going to do is post a little notice on the reviews that the reviews are all voluntary and not the result of getting a "free" book.   • This ruling was fully discussed at the BlogHer conference and it is intended for sites that operate as a REVIEW site - no matter what they are reviewing. • I wanted to thank everyone who voted in the first ever RBL Contest, We had one hunk who held on to the first place position from the beginning, while two actors competed for 2nd place (even tying at one point for 2nd place) - only to have another move up from 3rd place and claim 2nd alone. There are 4 men who tied for 3rd place. Their names will be sent to Beaty in alphabetical order today. I'm leaving it up to her if she wants to make a collage of all 4 men - or if she'd like to take a day for each fella by himself this week. Next week the 2nd place winner will be announced, and the following week the winner of the very first RBL favorite actor contest will be announced. It was a joy to see "actors" from so-called bygone eras on your ballots. In fact one beloved actor from a "bygone" era appears in the tie for 3rd place. • Hi update on mom! She came home thursday night, She is home for a couple days, .Then on this tuesday oct 20, we have to take her to shadyside hospital to check on her brain turmor. A couple days she has to stay there.After that maybe work on the leaking heart value.That's all we know for now. Now If we can get her to eat! A little at a time. • Update on me, I had a seizure this past thursday, I haven't been to work, . Ok Now! I go to the doctor's tuesday coming up. Now I think mom had a seizure this morning, She is the Bulter hospital , they are running more test for her heart. She has a pacemaker, One of her values to her heart is leaking, She fell a couple days ago, and her her back,fractures, so they are going to fix her back first on this thursday,if they can. I started reading Lora Leigh's book "Heat Seeker" and it a page burner (as usual) I had to force myself to put the durn thing down at 1:30 this morning! LOL She amazes me at how she can write sex scenes that BLOW you away!! Whew!! Hot-Hot! Lora Leigh never fails to BRING IT! The first shower sex scene in this book was off the charts sexy!   Also, starting Oct. 19, I have a free read on eHarlequin called SEDUCING THE VAMPIRE. This eight-week read is tied to Immortal Wolf, but is a stand-alone. It features Indigo, one of the characters from my Nocturne Draicon werewolf books. He's a half-vampire, half-werewolf. It's set in New Orleans.
  
  Okay, now onto the good stuff... I need some suggestions. I'm on this major reading glut... you know the kind where you have that little light on the book and you read until late at night. I'm starved for books. I've been devouring whatever I can, but right now, I crave family-type, small town books that are relationship and character driven, yet are sexy and feature a little mystery.
  
  I'm really hooked on these type of books lately... probably because of all the angst I've had to deal with in the day job (this year, three children, two of them just babies, died despite our efforts to save them.) I prefer contemporary, but if you have any suggestions for historicals that are in the last century (for example, I adore World War II books) please suggest away!
  
  Friends have suggested the Virgin River series, which I've bought, but I was hoping for more suggestions. My new favorite author along these lines is Sherryl Woods, and I have her backlist.
  
  But I'm greedy and want more... I'm leaving for Haiti for the day job in two weeks and need at least two books to take with me for the plane ride.

  • Try Suzann Ledbetter's mystery/romance series - starts with "East of Peculiar", then "South of Sanity", "North of Clever", "West of Bliss", and lastly, "Halfway to Halfway". The heroine takes a new job, running a retirement community in the mid-south, and gets involved with various mysteries, with the help of the aged but hilarious residents (think Grandma Mazur, only male, in mismatched loud prints and an Edsel). She was recommended to me by my ubs lady - she said she reads her and likes her books - historicals, and funny - they rarely get any turned in because people keep her books. She had just received three of the five in the Naked Series - The Naked Baron, The Naked Earl, and The Naked Marquis - I'm apparently missing The Naked Gentleman and The Naked Duke. • My saga with the dentist -- Diane, Wednesday, September 23, 09:51:09am
  It's my fault really! Woke up Saturday with a bit of a toothache, BUT I had to go to the firehouse to help out with some volunteer work. So I didn't call the dentist. I dealt with the "discomfort". By Sunday night, of course, I was in agony! Left a message on her answer machine. They called first thing Monday and took me in. Said it was an abcess - drained it - gave me antibiotic - and I was told to give it 24 to 48 hours. Called 24 hours later - said it was bothering me still. They said - give it another 24 hours! Called the dentist's office this morning - the pain was in my eyeballs! And today is the dentist's day off - NATURALLY! Soooo they called in a prescription for hydrocodone. Eyeballs dont hurt anymore! Face feels pretty darn good too - considering my entire head feels three times normal size! I usually hate to take ANY meds - especially pain killers - but I'm sooo looking forward to getting this tooth worked on tomorrow morning. Dentist's office said some nice man offered to give up his appointment so I could go instead.

  A married couple was celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary in a quiet, romantic little restaurant. Suddenly a beautiful tiny fairy appeared on their table!
  
  She said, "For being such an exemplary married couple and for loving each other faithfully for all this time, I will grant each of you one wish."
  
  The wife answered, "Oh, I want to travel around the world with my darling husband!"
  
  The fairy waved her magic wand and -- POOF!--two tickets for the Queen Mary II appeared in her hands.
  
  The husband thought for a moment. "Well, this is all very romantic," he said, "but an opportunity like this will never happen again. I'm sorry, my love, but my wish is to have a wife 30 years younger than me."
  
  The wife and the fairy were deeply disappointed, but a wish is a wish. So the fairy waved her magic wand again and -- POOF! -- the husband became 92 years old!

  I spent a great deal of my summer going through my keepers, rereading of some of my favorite series. I think it's fun to do that - not only do I revisit "old friends", but when I read books as they come out I've always forgotten some of the backstory in previous books in the series. Anyway, I discovered that some of my fave authors are "missing" lately. Now I know that, sadly, some, like Kathleen Woodiwiss, have passed on - and, of course, LaVyrle Spencer announced that she wasn't going to write anymore. But some authors seem to have just dropped from sight - I'm missing Marsha Canham and Judith Ivory and Denise Domning and Dallas Schulze and Jill Marie Landis and Meagan McKinney and Penelope Williamson ... and my goodness, I've lost track of the last time Catherine Anderson or Nicole Jordan released a book. Where are these wonderful authors? Why have they stopped writing? Are they no longer published because they didn't make the switch to paranormal or to the English Regency period or to contemporary suspense? Are there any authors that you ReBeLs are "missing" too?

  • Hey Judy, Catherine Anderson had StarBright come out in Jan 2009 and her newest Early Dawn will be out soon....she is still putting out great material (contemporary). One of her Commanche historicals was reissued in June 2009....and the author I'm missing? Judith McNaught. We were supposed to have gotten her newest in Sep 09, after a lengthy wait, but it is still not out and no one is talking about it. Jane Graves hasn't had anything out in a while and her website hasn't been updated, but she did put out quite a few in a row, so maybe she is taking a year off or something? Not sure.   Hey all! I've been crazy busy lately and haven't had much time to read or post or really do anything.I was sick for a while,the kids have taken turns being sick,and of course my hubby has stayed fit as a fiddle! Hmmph!
  
  We've been remodeling my Mom's house,ripping out carpet and kitchen cabinets and putting in wood flooring.I don't know what's gotten into hubs,but he's been like the energizer bunny handyman lately.He made me some lovely new bookshelves a few weeks ago,repainted our bedroom,hallway,and the dining room,and now he's working on my Mom's house like a freak.So her house is getting fixed up,and ours is finally starting to look the way we both want it to,which is good.But it's frustrating me,because now we've decided that we ought to move closer to my Mom to help her out more if we can,and I hate to leave this house after all the work we've put into it.It's too small and the neighborhood isn't that great,but we've been here for ten years and when I get rooted somewhere,I have a really hard time even thinking about moving.Plus,we'd probably have to rent,with the way things are right now,and I swore I'd never rent again.I don't want someone else telling me what I can and can't do with the house I live in,you know? So we might be moving,but I'm not sure yet.Hubby's trying to talk me into it.So far I haven't even looked at anything.I can't even entertain the idea of living with my Mom,either.There would be bloodshed by noon of the second day at the latest,LOL.
  
  Hubs and I celebrated our ten-year anniversary last week,too! I am shocked we've been married that long, plus put up with each other for five and a half years before that.He's been really wonderful lately.(I was immediately suspicious,of course,LOL)Which is nice,since those of you who know me know that he can be the biggest jacka$$ on the planet.But I've decided that the little joke about men being like grapes & wine is entirely correct! *G* We went out to a really nice restaurant for our anniversary,then sat in the lounge for a bit and listened to the music.My Mom watched the kids for us,and it was a really nice evening.
  
  As for books,when I have had a little time here and there,I have been reading Bewitched by Jill Barnett.Funny stuff.I've got the new Gabaldon coming,plus the second and third in Sara Donati's wilderness series,but I'm kicking myself for ordering online instead of just driving to the store and getting it.My only excuse is that Barnes and Noble is my Disneyland and I hate having to rush in and out of there when I have the kids with me,rather than take my time drooling over all the books.I wanted to reread all my Gabaldons before Echo came out,just like I wanted to reread all my other Fever books before Dreamfever came out,but I just haven't had the time.Grrr...

  I arrived at the usual time to relieve my son at the cash register here at the store. Just as he was walking out, an elderly fellow walked up to ds outside the door with a paper sack full of (apparently) books. They were just outside the open door, and I could hear the old fellow saying, *Oh, I can't talk to the lady, there! Can't YOU help me?*
  
  DS looked in the bag and ushered the gentleman in the store and out back. I could hear books being shifted, and the old guy talking quietly, but couldn't figure out whattheheck was going on. Curiosity was killing me! Finally, ds and customer returned from the far reaches, the old guy happily folding away his credit voucher for the mysterious bag o' books. He left smiling. And never once looked at me at all - evidently too embarrassed!
  
  DS then explained that the guy had a bag of "dirty books" he wanted credit on - *like porn, y'know* - and was rather surprised that we would take them at all. He couldn't even bring himself to talk to me about them, or force me to handle such smut. But DS reassured him that the books were not so bad, and that we'd put them where little kids wouldn't read them. I'm sure the guy was picturing a back room like in the old video stores!
  
  By this time I was laughing so hard I could hardly sit still - and demanded to see the smutty books! Yep, you guessed it - erotica. Kensington Brava, Spice, you know - there were at least three Opal Carew titles, and a bunch of others.
  
  Oh lor', I can just see this guy whispering to his pals about the bookstore that sells x-rated books! And where on earth did HE get them, anyway? *G*

  Hi all, just a quick note. Thanks so much for remembering my birthday. I had a rough Labor day weekend, I got in a car wreck Friday night by a hit and run driver. I don't really have any damage to my vehicle. My f150 has some fender scratches as does the bumper but apparently they scraped their whole car. I think they were kids driving Mommy and Daddies Lexus. My witness, a parole and probation officer saw the whole thing and he even chased them but they were gone so fast that we both only got part of the license plate. I already have neck problems as you all know and this just made them worse. They might be taking an MRI soon if it doesn't stop hurting so much.
  
  Anyway I have been busy since then going to the dr.s. I'll be ok but I hope they won't! :-0
