  Hey all, Non-book post here.
  
  My stepdad had knee replacement surgery (one knee) in Jan 2011 and is still having pain and problems. He is done with physical therapy.
  
  Just wondering if anyone had it or if you know anyone close to you who had it and how long it was before they were back to normal, or an improved 'normal'?
  
  I suggested to him that he write down a typical day, what time he gets up, what he does (activities, movement, chores, walking) and then put down when his knee starts hurting, etc, so that the doctor see's how much activity he has and then how much pain. Hopefully that will help give the doc an accurate picture.

  • I hope that he gets better soon. I had a full knee replacement in 2008 and it didn't go well. The scar tissue woke up angry and wearing slacks can sometimes be very painful. Along with that the replacement is close to the skin and when touched can also be painful. I have seen others that take a bit to heal and do wonderfully after time as long as they continue with exercises, walks. I agree with Merry. My case is rare so do not go by mine.   I love love love series stories. I think it's because the author creates a world we can love and then keeps taking us back there so we can catch up with our favorite characters. But I think my favorites are the ones like J D Robb's IN DEATH series. Where the characters are the same and they are always there when I come back to play.
  
  Do you like series? I'm going to list some of my top faves - let me know what yours are. I'm sure I can fit another world our two into my fantacies. *G*
  
  Laurell K Hamilton - Anita Blake (yeah - the sex is over the top, but I absolutely love her characterization. And she ALWAYS makes me think.)
  J D Robb - In Death (who couldn't love Roarke?)
  Janet Evanovich - Stephanie Plum (lots of LOL moments)
  Suzanne Brockmann - Troubleshooters (Yummy seals)
  Iris Johansen - Eve Duncan (I want to know what happened to her baby.)
  Robyn Carr - Virgin River (They're just so NICE. And the romance touches your heart.)
  J R Ward - Black Dagger Brotherhood (Ooooo - warriors)
  
  OK - I've left myself a little room while I contemplate the other wonderful series I've read. Can you add your favorites? I really am in the mood for another great series to enjoy.

  • OK most of the ones you mentioned are among my favorites & I'm also liking this new series by Lauren Dane the witch one. A really old series that I've never found anyone who's read it is Angelique series by Serganne Golan which was a french husband & wife who wrote the books together. There are 9 in the series but the wife died after #8 & you could sure tell which one had all the talent when you read #9..*EG* I know there are others but I can't think of them right now. Well, I have to say that Lynn Kurland has 2 series of books that inter-connect (De Piaget family and Macleod family), they are awesome! I also enjoyed the Carpathian series starting with Dark Prince from Christine Feehan, and the Dark Hunters from Kenyon even though I only read the first 5 and haven't caught up with the rest yet.   • I love series,especially when I realize I've started back-a$$wards and then I must complete them in order *G* My faves are of course the ones from KMM,PC,SK/Kinley,Gabaldon,Malory and Lowell,that I've mentioned many times before so here's some others-Jean Auel's Earth's Children(last one is FINALLY out,have it on my to-buy list)KMacA's Aisling Grey,Angela Knight's Mageverse,Holly's Midnight/Upyr,and a few others.There are some series I've started and loved but then stopped when I got mad b/c they killed off a fave character or changed direction too much for me,but there are also quite a few that I've only gotten 2-3 books into and I'm still interested in things,but just haven't gotten around to the rest yet.i think that's b/c I'm a 'mood' reader,and my choice of sub-genre changes accordingly.One of my fave things about series is guessing who the villain is,or how/where/when someone will end up,or who their real love will be.I like a book that makes me think and a good series does that.   • I think I've tried each and every one mentioned. There are a few more that came to mind that many of you might not know about. Some of these are not romance. But since I need my happy ending - they are safe. *G* The Black Jewels Trilogy - Anne Bishop (just not long enough). Temeraire by Naomi Novik (a dragon series. What's not to like about an infant 30 ton intelligent being. It's been fun watching him grow and learn.) Miles Vorsokian (sp) by Bujold (they just came out with a new book in this one. It'll be fun catching up.) Karen Rose has an excellent mini series. Can't think of the name of the series at the moment. These are for the readers that like stories that are just a bit different.   • In addition to all the ones mentioned, here are my picks for the "Not really romance" reads: I like Kim Harrison's series that starts with Dead Witch Walking, and I like Kay Hoope's Bishop series (with tightly connected trilogies and then all the sets of trilogies are connected) and I like Catherine Coulter's FBI (or Savage and Sherlock) series. Patricia Briggs' Mercedes Thompson series is a new one and really good in my opiniion. Mercedes Lackey has an old series called "SERRAted Edge (Stock cars and Elves - studly, buff elves) that has been re-released, and one called Bardic Voices that I also really enjoy.   I am so so ready! A little over a week left of tax season and illness is running rampant in the office. I need more hours in the day.
  
  So, I'm becoming lazy. I went online to my favorite audio store today to buy GHOST STORY by Jim Butcher. They didn't have it. Now I KNOW it's available in audio. I know they will have it eventually. But I want it NOW. But would I buy it as a book to actually read. No. I'll wait for the audio file. As I said - I've become lazy in my tired eyes, feeling bushed older age.
  
  So - does anyone want to rant about the result of American Idol this evening? I say it sucks! I won't give a name since some may not have seen it yet - but what are they thinking?????

And about Idol - everything I've read (it was even on CNN) says that it's the teen girls who, once Idol started allowing texting, are driving the results - they can send as many votes as they want from the same phone number (think about how many they can send in two hours!), and they get crushes on the cute guy performers - and Idol allows it because they can brag about how many million votes they got (55,000,000 a couple weeks ago).   I have some really huge journalism news, too, that I can't really share... But I'll share it here, at least a piece of it.
  
  On April 15, I'm being given a lifetime achievement award for journalism. I'll tell you more when it's truly public. When I got the news, I was cool as a cucumber on the outside, and on the inside I was like, "HUH???" I said to them, "Isn't this the award you usually give to old people and dead people?" And they laughed and said, "Yes, but we felt you've done more in your 46 years than most journalists do in 80." And then there was champagne for everyone in the newsroom.
  
  So that's kinda cool! The ceremony is a week from tomorrow.

  • I've never tried Aiken before, Roberta. Thanks for the recommend. I'm in the process of reading the Naomi Novik series about Temeraire (a dragon) and am really loving it. Picture our world with tame dragons. Different than the constant vampire novels. Before you all get excited - NOT ROMANCE. Not even a glimmer in the background. Strictly paranormal drama.   • Ann it might be because the Aiken books are a bit less... funny, I think. There's still the "crazy as hell" characters and some laughter, but the Laurenston books are over the top with the laughter. That's why I love them and got stared at by people on an airplane when I read Beast Behaving Badly. • Sad news -- enda aka Toodles, Friday, April 01, 05:52:30am
  Hi all I have a few bad news things. first I've been sick for a whole month now with Bronchitist, this last week with both a sinus infection and Bronchitist. I've been on 3 or 4 rounds of antibiotics and 3 rounds of steroids to open up my lungs and sinus membranes. Oh and plus two steroidal inhalers and 2 rescue inhalers. I am littersly sick of being sick!
  
  the second news is I can't go to vegas this year after all. Money got to tight. I probbly nrrd to try and get a job but with my bad back and neck, I'm not sure if I can work. I might have to get a job at a call center again. Dod is gonna try to get a job at Wally world aka Walmart. He wants to be a door greater or a stocker. I think he'd make a great greeter. He already know half the staff of wall greeters by name or by sight.
  
  The last thing of bas news is my 83 year old mother who had sever dementia died on the night of the 21st of March. Eric, the ownetr of the home called us earlier in the afternoon that she had had a minor heart attack but that her vitals all went back to normal. He called us again a 7:10 p.m. and told us we better get her asap. Don and I jumped in the truck and got there by 7:30 but she had already pasted. we missed hrt by 10 minutes. Eric had stayed with her all day and was gonna stay with her all night. He is such a sweety. She didn't suffer but pasted quietly without any pain.
  It was kind weirds when the funeral home got there one of the men looked me and said "Lil ave" I looked at him relly closely and Pizza Hut popped in my head. He used to deliver my pizzas. I new then He would treat my mother with the best care. He was a new friend by then so Ifelt comfy leaving him with mom's care. at the planning I was ok and up until the priveat, immediate family only I putmom's wedding ring back on her finger although I couldn't get it on her ring finger so I placed it on her pinky. Also she had requested that her cat Lady's ashes be buried with her but its illegal here so we had them put her cat blanket on her and I stuck the ashes in between her legs flat. It wasn't the ideal spot but that was the only spot to place them without them being discovered. I didn't really really break down until Friday the 26th of March. I really started crying. I did speak a bit but I forgot the funny part about how she is moving God's funiture and cleaning heaven since she loved doing it her on earth. She used to move the living room furniture at least once a week and I fell over it a number of times. Dad too when her came home late from a job.Anyway I blame my mother for bad back not only because heredity but by her rearraged furniture.
  
  So that's all my bad news. I so wanted to go its been 6 years since I went and miss you a lot and would be thrilled to meed all the new people. ok I'm done babbling

  Like I said before most things don't take me out of the book & this doesn't really either but it is bugging me some 300 pages into the book. I am enjoying this book & will still read it & the others also but I'm one of those people who notices small discrepancies, even in movies & tv shows.
  
  This is what is sticking in my memory & won't let go; the author says "it's early April" & someone is attending Lundi Gras! OK so this is something that is the Monday before Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras) in New Orleans. Mardi Gras is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday which begins Lent which lasts until Holy Saturday, (they day before Easter)
  So there is NO WAY it could ever happen in April as the latest Easter has even been is April 25th. OK, so am I being a nit picker or what? I read this a few days ago & it has just been driving me nuts, so I had to ask if yawl think I'm being a bitch or what..*G*

• I just finished the second of three books written by Emily March aka Geralyn Dawson. Emily has written a new series about a small town in the Colorado Mountains called Eternity Springs. The first book is called Angels Rest and the second that just came out this month is Hummingbird Lake. The last book comes out next month, so three books in three months I love series like that. Anyway Eternity Springs is a small town in need of revival and is the home of a few damaged souls needing healing. Good thing they seem to have a resident guardian angel. The books are wonderfully written, the heros are hunk worthy and each story leaves you smiling at the end. I even made my husband wait on a Sunday morning before we could leave to go skiing so I could finish Hummingbird Lake. If you liked Susan Mallery you will love Emily March's Angels Rest and Hummingbird Lake. Tried just taking it easy and found what she really wanted to do was write. Last child was off at college, oldest getting married, you know many of us have been there or will be there shortly.   I can't believe she passed away! She seemed like she would live forever-such a tough old gal no matter what came her way.I loved her in National Velvet and thought she was just awesome as Cleopatra,and I know my Mom was a big fan,too.Liz had to be one of the most beautiful women ever,I think even as she aged she never lost that stunning,unique face.
  
  As for my own Mom's passing,I am still just hanging in there,taking it one day at a time and plugging along.Every time I think I can't take all the stress or deal with one more wrench in the works,I remember all she went through and dealt with, and it strengthens my resolve and straightens me out.
  
  Haven't read anything good,but sometime I will finish 'The Dream Thief'-it's what I was on before Mom died and was pretty interesting.

  • Bo, I'm with you. I was so sad to wake up to this news today. My mom and dad went to see "Cleopatra" the night that my mom went into labor with me. In fact, walking to and from the film is what did it. So I grew up loving her films. She has so much more class and true glamor than any of today's scandal-prone starlets.   I LOVE historical romance! It is my favorite sub-genre! But I HATE it when an author (and her editor/proofreader/copyreader/anyone else who reads the book before it's published) makes a glaring mistake - glaring enough that even I realize it's a mistake! I was just reading a book by a well-known author, a fave of many ReBeLs. The Scottish heroine feared for her brother, who was in the Crusades. Now the Crusades were a long time ago - I Googled them to be sure - there were actually nine Crusades, from 1096 to 1272. And the heroine was worried because she hadn't heard from her brother in a couple years - but at first when he left, HE HAD SENT HER A LETTER EVERY WEEK! What?!?!? A LETTER?!?!? Written on what?!?!? Every week?!?!? In the Middle Ages?!?!? From a Crusade in the Middle East all the way to Scotland?!?!? Delivered how?!?!? Puh-lease!!!!!
  
  I stopped reading the book - it's a no-go for me now. It just seems to me that, with the Internet, it's so easy to find background information for a historical. And what about the authors' copyreaders and editors - aren't they supposed to catch these things? And don't get me started on "Here, here!" (WRONG!) instead of "Hear, hear!" (CORRECT!) - I still see that all the time in books.
  
  Are any of you other ReBeLs turned off a book/story by these kinds of mistakes? Am I being too picky?
  
  Hmmm - my whine turned into a rant. Think I'm going to have a glass of that wine I mentioned in my other post.

  • Are you being too picky? No, I don't think so. Some readers don't mind historical innaccuracy or mind it only if it's glaring. But I'm with you. I want it to be as accurate as it can be.   • Oooh I'm so with you on this area. I was reading a historical the other day and they put jelly on a scone!?!?!? He then proceeded to want to lick jelly off her face. Gave up on the book not long after that, because these anachronisms just kept on coming. I've been super picky on historicals lately as I really want to read a good one, but have reverted to rereading some favourites to remember why I love them. I don't mind the odd inconsistency, but some things just throw you out of the story. You know I had a visual of a big blob of red jelly wobbling on her lips when I read that line LOL.   • I get annoyed when the language is off in a historical.If it's one or two times,I can excuse it.But constant modern slang or even humor that was not in use back then really bugs me.I think there is a way to do humor in historicals without lightening them up too much.If I am reading a historical,it's because I want to know a hero that's really a man,learn about a time period that was rough/exciting/changed the world,etc.,and I don't want to be distracted by attempts to modernize the period,I guess.I feel insulted if the author tries to bring the time period to me,rather than letting me slip into it.If she is good enough (*ahem,P.C.,for example) she will be able to do it without choppy,inconsistent writing.   I just finished the ARC of BREAKING POINT by Pamela Clare. I am speechless. I want to put into words how this story made me feel. I can only try.
  
  When the story opens up our heroine, Natalie Benoit, is caught in an ambush and whisked away to an unknown but surely desperate and bloody end. She ends up in a jail cell (picture dark hovel with bugs and no amenities) next to our hero, Zach McBride. Of course, she doesn't know he's our hero. To her he is just a pain filled voice in the dark. Natalie is one of the I-team and is investigating the dead women who keep appearing in the desert along the Mexican border after obviously being raped and tortured. The kidnappers did not take this investigation at all well.
  
  Thus begins a journey fraught with danger, torture, murder and surprising moments of tenderness, love and friendship. This story has it all. Horrifying histories for our two main characters. Present danger and action galore. Bad guys to hate. Wrinkles in the mystery. A love story that brought tears to my eyes - multiple times. And, of course, the requisite happy ending. Did I mention HOT??? Sizzling!
  
  I felt the squalidness, the danger, the fear, the sadness. I reveled in the love story. I enjoyed the capabilities and friendship in the I-team members. Pamela put me right there. It's surprising I didn't feel raindrops in the big storm. But those were just tears.
  
  In my opinion, Pamela's best story so far. And I love her storytelling!
  
  Coming to your favorite bookstore May 3, 2011. Be there! You won't regret it.

There was a huge gap of time, and I was so afraid I wasn't going to be able to pick the story up and do it justice. I'm so relieved you enjoyed it!   So...My husband worked a longer/different shift on Thursday and then played golf early Friday so he came home and went to sleep Friday afternoon. Knowing that he would be sleeping and knowing that I would have to come home and be quiet so he could sleep (and what better way to be quiet than sit down and read a good book!) - I decided to take my 50% off any one item Borders Books coupon and do a little shopping. (Lets not mention that I already have 300 books at home waiting to be read, thats not the point!)
  
  As always, the monthly release list that Judy provides gives me a guide. I stopped by the store looking for Olivia Drake's newest "Scandal of the Year". I had received a post card in the mail about this book, I liked the premise and decided to try it - even though I knew it was part 3 of a series.
  
  Borders didn't have that book. They said they don't always get the new ones on the same week they are released. (What a bunch of crap! Hello? Are you a bookstore?? LOL)
  
  Anyway, being a frugal type of gal, and not being one to let a good 50% coupon go to waste, AND knowing that I still have 2 gift cards to use, I decided to browse a bit.
  
  I walk over to a display and see a stunning hardback, with a purple cover of a HUNK of a man on the front...and yes, I can be lured by a good cover. Anyhow...as I look, I see it's "Dark Prince" by Christine Feehan. I already have almost all of the Dark books by Feehan, and have enjoyed them all (I'm about 3 behind)...so I kept going to look around.
  
  I didn't see anything that was jumping out at me and when I walked by the display again, I noticed the purple book again and that it said "AUTHOR'S CUT SPECIAL EDITION". So of course, I have to see what this is all about.
  
  "This novel, with one hundred fewer pages, was the author's first book. Back in 1999, content was cut to reduce the length. Now, for the first time, the author's original version is available here in a special hardcover edition."
  
  I'll admit, I was sucked in. Not by the cover, but by the added 100 pages. I had bought Jude Deveraux's "Knight in Shining Armor" trade size at an RT convention because it had 50 added pages. I get home and read it, and I cannot see any added value. I can't tell where the 50 pages were. And I debated with myself in the store, but its Mikhail and Raven, the start of the whole series, so I got it. Used my coupon and felt a little better about it. LOL
  
  QUESTION: does a good cover lure you over to a book? Are you tempted to buy a re-release of a book you have already read, if its been 'updated'?
  
  I'm gonna stay home and work in my office today trying to file and get tax info together (Hi Beaty! Wavin' atcha!!). What is everyone else doing today? What are you reading?

  • I am always drawn in by a good cover. I have been reading alot of e-books lately and the one thing I miss is seeing the cover. .. I have never bought a book for a re-read because of added content but I imagine I would. .. I currently have 2 books going. I just finished reading Glory in Death, by J.D. Robb, and am anxious to read the next one, Immortal in Death, but, I have to pace myself, ha ha. So I am reading other books in between. I am just about to start "Dark Desires after dark" by Kresley Cole. .. Also, I have a few pages left of "A game of Chance" (a Mackenzie mountain book) by Linda Howard. I am excited to finish it so that I can read Extreme Exposure by Pamela Clare. I am really looking forward to meeting Gabe, in Naked Edge, ha ha.. • LOOSE ENDS by Tara Janzen -- Robin, Saturday, February 26, 11:19:52am
  Well, I finished "Loose Ends" by Tara Janzen last night and I enjoyed it. I especially enjoyed seeing all the guys from SDF and getting a final end to the series. Heck, even Quinn was back and I don't think he had made an appearance since the first Crazy book, right? Only thing I didn't get was -- where were Kids wife and Supermans wife and Creeds wife? We were never told but they were not around at all.
  
  I actually went back and re-read her RBL interview before I started the book and it brought back a few things I had forgotten. And I have to say that she has changed her writing style a little. This book was kind of like a Brockmann book or a Lowell book, meaning that we have 3 stories all inter-mingling, racing towards one big finish line.
  
  I was concerned the momentum would be lost because we cut away from the main story to go to one of the sub-stories, but the momentum was NOT lost and as a matter of fact I bit my nails, and peeked ahead because I was so excited I could barely wait. (And while everyone loves Superman and Kid and I especially dig Creed, I have to say that Dylan is 'the man'....whew...he got me cranked up with one word!)
  
  I cried in two places near the end, and all in all I can say that it was a satisfying conclusion....but I cannot help but want MORE of SDF.
  
  Anybody else read it? How did you like it?

      • Robin...I only do these books on audio. The narrator is SO good, and she does the voices SO well.
