I had the MDA Lock Up fundraiser today, so I was escorted from my office by 2 firefighters (Joe, who was maybe 24 and Mike who was prob. 30-ish)
so...We're in the car (me in the backseat, Joe & Mike in the front) and Joe, who was going in the offices and getting the people couldn't figure out how to make the handcuffs tighter. Mike was laughing saying this is why they were firefighters, because they couldn't work handcuffs. What do I say?! "You guys need some different girlfriends then."
*blush*
Joe turned bright red, I started stammering about "I can't believe I said that!" and Mike was practically on the floor laughing. I was declared their favorite pick up of the day.

I went over to Heather's last night for pizza to play with her new Wii that she bought this week. I am sad to report that I was beaten by Leila (who is 5) at bowling AND boxing. *sigh* It's pathetic.

I will have to either hang at Heather's more to practice, or buy my own Wii to improve my skills. Somehow, knowing me, I foresee myself hanging out at Heather's more often. Good thing she lives a half mile away, huh?

Once Leila went to bed, Heather and I settled in and starting talking books, work, life etc. and suddenly Heather looks up and says "Holy Crap - it's 3:30!" *lol* Good thing the drive home is less then 5 minutes.

I slept until 12N today; all I've done since getting up is laundry, grocery shopping and making dinner, and I'm ready for bed. Clearly, I'm too old to be slinking home at 3:30 AM. Maybe if I hadn't lost at bowling AND boxing, it would have been different this morning when the alarm went off. *sigh*

Last month, I tried to install a new security system on my computer. It slowed the machine down to such a crawl, and I tried unsucessfully for 72 hours to download the updates, that I finally gave up and removed the program and called the manufacturer. They sent me a new program. Fine. Today, I finally got it installed an updated. Great. Then I tried to go online. Internet Explorer and all of my bookmarks were gone. KAPUT! I've installed Firefox and am retrieving bookmarks from the ether as the occur to me. I am not a happy camper. Life happens. GRRRR. But I partially outsmarted the computer gremlins. I had made a seperate file of all my important URLs and passwords. I can track some of them down if not all. >:-D

- I use Firefox now, too, because of an over-protective security system. (It wouldn't allow the installation of Flash, which meant that I couldn't get to many Internet sites.) My son, who runs a computer business, spent a couple days trying to get rid of the security system, and finally had to dump my Internet Explorer to get rid of it entirely. He then downloaded AVG, a free security system - and managed to get all of my programs, bookmarks, etc., back too. - Y'all, I've been using this security system for 8 years and have LOVED it. I think that it is something that I may have done on the original install last month that screwed things up. The tech staff have been outstanding...they actually are located in NA and speak and understand the same English that I do. They even have a sense of humor to deal with an old lady who lost her sense of humor yesterday. They even sent me a $50 graphic design program for free. They have been as helpful and nice as anyone could ask. I've just been in a serious crank with an unbelievably slow dial-up for downloads. But I am clever. I am downloading the latest browsers into my Download folder in case anything like this happens again. If I hadn't had an old Firefox version in that folder, I would have been so SOL. I'm trying to remember the title of a book. I know it isn't a tough one since it's fairly recent. It's from the last couple of years and is a paranormal. I'm thinking at least partially werewolf.

It starts with the heroine running into a building. She's escaping an attacker. She literally zooms into the building faster than the eye can see.

Later she discovers her parents were killed during an attack by the woman that later acts as her nanny and mentor. The older woman was an ancient in her culture and one of the most powerful.

Any ideas?

Sorry to have been a tad absent lately, but you know how it goes ... busy is as busy does.

I'm loving this wallpaper, what a honey (or is that bunny), totally lickable anywho.

Reading lately has been a mixed bag, with some wins and some losses. The latest Susan Elizabeth Phillips I adored. Liz Carlyle's latest was also fantastic. I found a heap of historicals at the library that were very hit and miss and then went back and reread all the Nalini Singhs and Lora Leighs for some nice alpha reading. I've found a lot of the historicals I read had sort of more beta heroes and you need a dose of alpha man to read after too much beta. I've discovered ereading on the iphone is great and just downloaded the new Nalini Singh "Angels Blood". Haven't started it yet as we are heading away for the weekend and I'm saving it. I did find a big hit with Keri Arthurs older werewolf book, Beneath a Rising Moon. I think I just crave some good paranormals (I know a lot of you are sick of them, but I'm not).

So how is everyone and what are the plans for Easter? We are off to visit the cow farm again (smelly place that it is). The kids love to see the new baby calves, so more poop to wallow through (sigh).

I was recently asked for recommendations for a reader that really REALLY enjoyed the TWILIGHT series. I drew a blank. All of the vampire stuff that I read is way too hot for a 14 year old girl to start on. She devoured the series in two weeks. That's excellent for someone that doesn't read and there is soooo much out there to enjoy. Any recommendations I can give her?

There are, in fact, a whole BUNCH of teen vampire series out there - way more than these three, but these are the ones I've read and enjoyed. Thought I'd do a quick separate post about that lead law, 'cause it's a doozy.... -- Merry, Monday, April 06, 08:32:12am
The law was signed last August. It was to go into effect this February 8th. There was NO publicity about it to speak of until about the beginning of January. It's a Federal law, btw, but the Consumer Protection Agency can and will allow State governments to enforce it as well.

Simply stated, any product intended for use by children 12 and under must now be tested and certified to contain less than certain levels of lead. And that allowable level will be going down twice more at intervals. and they made it retroactive to - forever. If the law is strictly interpreted as written, it means that every single book, toy, article of clothing, CD, DVD, electronic item, furniture (like cribs), that was on the shelf or in the home on Feb. 7th must be tested for lead before it can be sold. It is assumed that none of those items is safe, and therefore they must all be disposed of. Only tested/certified things may be sold. Sounds good? Except that all the old stuff (for instance, I received a shipment of books on Feb. 6th. On Feb. 8th, they became illegal to sell.) Items cannot be given away, either, they must be discarded/destroyed.

I'd be contacting my local senator about this, or congressman (or woman) and asking for Stimulus assistance. Well, I'll start with a THANK YOU to whoever was on here begging for more Scottish books because they wanted more like "Callum" and I love me a Scottish hero....so I took note of the title, and while I was out visiting a bookstore last weekend, I saw Laird of the Mist and tried it. AND I AM ALL ABOUT IT!!! I adore a tortured hero. I'm not even done yet but already wrote the author (Paula Quinn) a nice email. I had part two in my hot little hands and put it back because I wasn't sure if I'd like Pt 1, so now I have to see if I can order it....

This is one of the reasons I like RBL....viva la book recommendations!!! Yayyy!!!! (Okay, the girl talk and hot bods are nice too. And did I mention the hot bods?)

Other books I picked up: Lisa Kleypas's newest hb "Smooth Talking Stranger" Borders had it but not 30% off, so I found an internet 30% coupon and got it yesterday. Can't wait, I've enjoyed her contemporary series.

My other news is that finally, after 5 years of talking about it, I've started taking dance lessons. The dh was so cooperative and is having as much fun as I am. I wanted to start with latin, but they said I had to take it a little slower at first and go with Waltz and Fox Trot and some of the Swing dances. And they were right! My right foot hurts but I'm hoping it will get better as I stretch and move....but I'm having fun. We'll see how the month goes. I figured, if an 82 year old woman can do it, so can I, physical challenges be damned! Of course if I was a Flinstone character, instead of 88 fingers Louie, I'd be 88 Toes Robin. LOL. But I'm trying.

to say hello, how are you, and yes, I'm still alive. *G* I do pop in often, but lately I've been so darn busy with one thing and another I haven't had time to say much. And Merry with nothing to say is a true rarity, believe thee me!

Still working on the replaced knee, still not having the other knee done yet. Not going to RT this year, darn it, but maybe to NYC for the booksellers' big trade show, BEA, in May.

Still reading constantly... just working my way through the Miniature Mystery series (well, it's only two books so far) by Margaret Grace. The heroine is a 60-ish grandma who makes miniature furniture and scenes and solves murders on the side. Cute, readable, fun. Also, for some reason, working my way through the Starfist series - Marines in space. Verrry interesting - if you like SEAL books, these guys will do quite well as stand-ins. Not much romance (some), but lots of military stuff. I do read romance, still, but read about 12 in a row and needed a short break.

The store is still going, somehow, and I'm about to leave for the annual meeting of Annie's Book Stop owners. At least this year it's only a few miles away, instead of an hour's drive (or more)! Have to give a speech on the whats and wherefores of HR 4040/CPSIA, the law which made children's books illegal to sell (or give away) after Feb. 10 without having them tested for lead. Books that were okay Feb. 9 became contraband Feb. 10. At least they modified the interpretation a little to make books published after 1984 "safe", but technically, we're supposed to dispose of (that's "destroy") all children's books published before that date. Like your childhood Nancy Drews and Tom Swifts and Bambis. Not gonna happen here, unless they throw me in jail (and they could)... stupid legislators didn't think about the ramifications when they passed this one. I understand wanting to protect kids from lead poisoning - that's a good thing - but did you know they can't sell ATVs any more 'cause there's lead in the battery terminals and the tire valve stems? And bikes have lead in valve stems... and electronics have lead in 'em... and toys... and clothing... urk. Some thrift shops just dumpstered _all_ their kids' stuff Feb. 10th.

From the meeting to a hockey game - younger grandson Owen's jr. high team is in the playoffs, and it's Gramma's sworn duty to freeze and cheer, right?

Then dinner, and I can finally get back to my mystery. If I don't fall asleep on the couch first.

I'll shut up now, but I just wanted to sneak in and say hi, and happy birthday to everyone who's celebrating one, and I do send out those RBL vibes when requested - they're just silent ones!

I spent a little time looking back at some of our previous years' winners - it's really interesting to see the additions and other changes we've made over the years, all of them due to suggestions by you ReBeLs. One biggie: dividing up the paranormal books into four categories - you can see from that when this sub-genre hit big! A couple other big changes: the addition of Diva of Romance! and the changing of the category names from "Best" to "Favorite." It especially amazed me to look at the 1998 awards - the first year we did them - and see how many of the authors (obviously faves at the time) are no longer writing! How sad for us readers!

PS - Did you ever wonder how we happened to name our awards "Hughies?" Well, you can go to our All About RBL page (the link is on the Homepage) and read the "Heeerrre's Hugh!" article - you'll understand immediately. :)

And of course, I went a little nuts! Su was much more restrained than me. I found an entire series/set (3 books) of Liz Carlyle's that I'd never read. WHAT?? How does this happen?

I also found the Patrice Michelle Scions books I was missing since I came late to that series.

Su & I also got awesome pizza while out. So, all in all, a good day! Anyone read anything good lately? I'm actually 3/4 done with JR Ward's Lover Enshrined. I don't know how that sat on my TBR for so long! I am really enjoying it though I have to admit, this is one series where I reall want to smack those stubborn heroes upside the head sometimes.

Here are the other three promised scenes. Sorry I'm late - I slept in and it felt WONDERFUL. These 4 am mornings are getting old. *G*

Scene 4 -

"But you have the advantage over me."

Two hard, hot hairy legs settled between hers. "In what respect?"

"You have seen my all, whereas I . . . "

"You saw my all before you decided to trek outside."

"But not like this." (She) lifted her hand and touched his cheek. It was prickly with dark stubble. She wanted more than anything to examine this man, to record every inch of his body, every texture of his skin. She wanted to make herself as much a part of him as he had made himself a part of her. "In my books it says that a man changes color when he orgasms. I want to know. I want to know everything there is to know about you."

His gray eyes grew shuttered. Rolling off her, he lay down on his back and threw an arm over his eyes. "Then know me, . . . and let me know if I change color. The knowledge might come in useful on the battlefield. I could, armed with the information, astound and confound the enemy. Like a chameleon."

A reluctant laugh escaped (her). "You are mocking me, sir."

He lifted his arm and slanted a look at her. "Not at all. You will forgive a sudden sense of vulnerability on my part. It's not every day that a man bears his all for a lady's private schooling."

A twinge of reality intruded on her pleasure. "I am not a lady."

He reached out a long, tanned finger and flicked her nose. "You are a lady, from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. And I am here to give you pleasure."

"What about your pleasure?" She trailed a hand down his chest, a muscled, contoured belly, and grabbed the root of their discussion.

"Get on with your studies else you lose a student."

(She) scooted down the bed. And was distracted by the sight of the angry red scar on his thigh. She lightly touched it with her left hand.

"Does it still hurt?"

His gray eyes were unreadable. "That's not part of the lesson plan."

"You were limping last night."

"Because I fell on it when the bloody horse threw me. Continue with your studies."

(She) obligingly studied the swollen shaft that sprang out from a bed of black, curly hair. It seemed impossible that he had fit inside her. "Have you ever measured yourself?"

"You're putting me to blush."

"The head is purple." She ignored his sally. "It is very large, like a small fist. It has an eye." She captured the single drop of moisture that glistened on the tip and smeared it over the swollen glans. "And it weeps. Is it sad?"

"Very." (His) voice was strained. "Why don't you kiss it and make it better?"

Scene 5 -

...(She) entered the dressing room. He was regarding himself in the mirror and his back was to her, and, heavens, but she would have been much better off if she'd never seen his tight musceled ass in a pair of tight faded jeans. His long black hair rippled over his shoulders and down his back, inviting her to plunge her fingers in it and trail them down the splendid ridges of muscle --

"Turn around," she said, her mouth suddenly dry.

He did so, with a scowl. She eyed his bare chest and, with effort, forced herself to remember she was supposed to be looking at the jeans. Her gaze skimmed downward over his rippled abdomen and lean hips and --

"What have you stuffed in your pants, (his name)?" she demanded.

"Nothing that wasn't God-given," he replied stiffly.

(She) stared. "There's no way that's part of you. You must have gotten a sock or...something...stuck. Oh, my." She pried her gaze from his groin. A muscle worked in his jaw, and he was clearly in discomfort.

"I doona believe you intended to torture me - nay, I saw other men on the street in such clothing - so I will not take putative measures. However, I think the problem is much the same as my feet," he informed her.

"Your feet?" she repeated dumbly, her gaze dropping. They were large.

"Aye." He gestured toward hers. "In your time you bind your feet in constrictive boots, whereas we wear soft, supple leather."

"Your point?" she managed.

"They have more room to grow," he said, as if she were simpleminded.

Scene 6 -

The phone rang forever, and then, just as she was about to hang up, he answered it with "What?"

"(His name), this is (her name)." Her voice quavered, and she swallowed to try to steady it.

"What's wrong?" He didn't sound angry anymore. "Sorry, I was in the shower. What happened? Are you all right?"

(She) took a deep breath. "You're fired."

"No, I'm not." He sounded perplexed. "What's wrong with you?"

"We're never going to find the money, and I can't afford to pay you anymore, and your week's up soon--"

"I'll work for free. I'll pick you up tomorrow and we'll talk about it."

"No!"

"(Her name), tell me what's wrong right now, or I'm coming over there."

"No!"

"(Her name) --"

"All right." (She) blinked. "All right, then. But listen. Just listen." She stopped and there was nothing but silence on the other end. "All right." She swallowed. "I can't see you anymore. I'm...attracted to you."

(His) snort came over the wire like an explosion. "Well, I'm attracted to you, too, but --"

"Just listen!" (She) swallowed again in the silence. "I'm not just attracted to you. I want you." Once the first words were out, the others followed, uncontrollably. I want your hands everywhere on me, and your mouth, and --" The words tumbled out of her, her voice rising, and she said things she'd never dreamed she could say to anyone, things she'd never said to herself, swinging in wilder and wilder arcs of erotic fantasy, and she said them all to him, chanted them as she got dizzier and dizzier thinking of him, until she shrieked, "And most of all, I want you hard inside me, and I can't stand it anymore." Then she stopped, surprised to find herself standing, leaning against the wall by her bed, shaking from the emotion and the release and the need for him that still pounded inside her.

After a few seconds, he said, "(Her name)?"

She closed her eyes, feeling like a complete fool. "Yes?"

"Are you done?"

She swallowed. "Yes."

"Are you all right?"

Her breathing slowed as she thought about it. "Yes. Yes. Actually, I feel better."

"Good." His voice was preternaturally calm. "Now listen to me." He stopped for a moment, and she heard him draw a breath. "This is not a problem. Where are you?"

"I'm in my bedroom," She squeaked.

"First door at the top of the stairs, right?"

She felt her breath go and fought to get the word out. "Right."

"Good. Stay there. Don't move."

He hung up, and she heard the dial tone in her ear, and it gradually dawned on her that he was coming over.

She had promised him more than she had ever even thought of with any other man, and he was coming over. She sank slowly onto the bed, terrified and exhilarated and more aroused than she'd ever been in her whole life.

She was going to make love with (him).

"Oh, my God," she said and collapsed back onto the bed.

(He) hung up the phone, smacked his head once into the wall to get some blood back to it and headed for the door.

No, wait, he needed keys. Where were his car keys? Pants pocket. He reached for his pants on the floor and realized he was naked.

Okay, clothes first. He sat down on the bed, and it sagged under his weight, and he heard (her) voice again in the back of his brain, reciting all the things she wanted, and he closed his eyes to keep from passing out. Breathe, he told himself, and he breathed in deep. Now get dressed.

I just posted a review I did on the Black Lace book Taking Care of Business on the spoiler board. It's already out in the UK but doesn't come out in the US until tomorrow. I have to say this is one of my favorite Black Lace books. Emma's Menage still wins out but that's some pretty stiff competition! (Pun intended!) It's my turn and I just don't have anything new ready for you. So I thought I'd pick six scenes from the past and see how good the RBLs memories are. Maybe I can trigger a reread?

Scene 1 -

"Undress - slowly."

He raised an eyebrow, then untied his shirt and slowly pulled it over his head. It fell, forgotten, at his feet. Candlelight cast the bronzed muscles of his arms, chest, and abdomen in glorious high relief. He reached for the opening of his breeches, his muscles shifting, and began to untie them.

...felt desire flow like warm brandy through her veins. "Slowly, convict."

His gaze locked with hers again as ever so slowly he pulled on the ties, undid his breeches, and let them drop to the floor. He was rock hard, his sex thick and heavy.

She found she could scarcely breathe. "Your hair. Remove the thong."

Not breaking eye contact, he reached back with one hand, and his dark hair slid free, falling just below his shoulders. He looked untamed, primally male, and, with his lash scars, not a little dangerous. He stepped toward her.

She stepped back. "Stop! The shackles." She pointed to the bed. "Lock one end around your right wrist, then pass the chain behind the bedpost, lie down, and lock the other end around your left wrist."

Scene 2 -

"Drop your pants."

Today certainly wasn't the first time a woman had told (him) to take off his pants. From playfully suggestive, to wickedly sultry, the sentence conjured up a variety of pleasant memories. Of women. Lots of women.

He just loved them. And he was a lucky enough son of a bitch that they usually loved him back. Usually....

Unfortunately, as he stared down the five-inch barrel of an old Colt .45 handgun, he was beginning to see the possibilities.

"Louise, you don't want to do this," he told the woman holding the gun. "Whatever's wrong, we can work things out."
"Drop 'em, loverboy."

Scene 3 -

And then they both heard it: the clack of heels approaching swiftly down the hall. The door was open. (She) had not closed it.

"Down," he hissed. With far more possession than she could claim, he shoved her beneath his desk. Fortunately, the space was large because (she) was no wood sprite. She scrambled back as far as she could go. An instant later (he) sat, wheeling his chair into the kneehole to hide his disheveled clothes. He didn't have time to zip before his secretary reached the door.

"Mr. ---------?" she said. "I've brought Mr. Renard for his four o'clock."

(He) cleared his throat. "Uh, yes. Hullo, Alain."

Alain, whom (she) knew to be the company accountant, walked briskly across the polished floor. She heard him take the selfsame chair she'd occupied minutes earlier. Paper slid across the wood above her head. "I've brought the figures from the New York store. I thought you'd want to go over them together." Alain paused. "Are you all right? You look flushed."

(She) shook with silent amusement. (He) had to feel it because his knees were wedged to either side of her body. He squeezed them in warning. "Uh, I was doing situps. Too much time behind a desk, you know. I'm getting soft."

"That'll be the day," said Alain.

(She) was forced to agree. Her eyes had adjusted to the shadows and she had the most graphic evidence possible of (his) continuing rock-hard state. She bit his thigh to control her urge to laugh. (His) hand flashed under the desk and cuffed her ear.

"Why don't you read the report to me," he said. "I'll save my questions until you're done."

(She) wasn't as familiar with the office staff as (he), but she'd heard her mother complain many times about Alain's long-winded ways. Who knew how long the accountant would take? And in the meantime, (he) was trapped, his trousers conveniently open, his cock eager to finish what Alain had interrupted. The temptation was too great to resist.

Off to work. I'll check your progress this evening.

I have FINALLY found my place and I expect to be here OFTEN. He paused inside the narrow gate. Leaning against one side of it, he sent her a challenging smile, knowing full well that she could not go through without brushing against him.

He raised her brows. “By some chance are you expecting me to test it?”

He lifted one shoulder in a relaxed shrug, watching her with a vagabond charm that was nearly irresistible. “I won't stop you if you feel so inclined.”

It was obvious he did not expect her to take up the challenge. He knew she had only to roll her eyes and reprove him and he would step aside. However, as she considered her response to him she became aware of a painful hollowness inside. She had not been touched by anyone in two years. No impulsive girlish hugs from her friends and Maidstones... no caress of her mothers hand, no sweetly childish kisses from her younger siblings. She wondered what it was about this man that had made her aware of the deprivation. He made her want to tell him her secrets—which was, of course, unthinkable. Impossible. She could never trust anyone, when her very life was at stake.

She realized that he smile had vanished. Without being aware of it, she had drawn closer to him and now stood within arms length. Her gaze flickered to his mouth, so wide, so masculine, full. Her pulse escalated to a wild rhythm as temptation exerted a force stronger than anything she had ever known... as strong as fear, as deep as hunger.

“Hold still,” she heard herself say. Carefully she laid a hand on the center of his chest.

The instant that she touched him, his chest moved beneath her palm in a strong, quick breath.

The violent thump of his heart against her fingers filled her with a curious tenderness. He seemed to be frozen, as if any movement might frighten her away. Softly she touched his lower lip with her fingertips and felt his hot breath fan against them. A butterfly left it's nesting place on the gate and flew away, a trembling stain of color in the air.

“What is your name?” She whispered. “Your first name?”

It took an unaccountably long time for him to reply. The bristly fan of his lashes lowered to conceal his thoughts. “John.”

He was so tall that she had to stand on her toes to reach his mouth, and even then she couldn't quite manage it. Catching her waist in his hands, he compacted her gently against his body. Suddenly there was a strange, lost look in his eyes, as if her were drowning. Hesitantly she slid her hand around the back of his neck, where the interlaced muscles had gone rigid.

He let her tug his head lower, lower, until their breath mingled and their lips touched in a sweet, supple kiss. His mouth remained warm and still against hers, and then his mouth began to move in soft brushes. Disoriented, she swayed in his grasp, his arms slid around her back to hold her securely. Instinctively she nudged upward, straining on her toes as she sought to deepen the tender pressure. But he was careful to keep his passion under tight rein, refusing to take more.

Gradually she eased away from him, sinking back on her heels. She dared to touch the side of his face, relishing the warmth of his skin against her palm. “I've paid the toll,” She whispered. “May I pass through the gate now?”

He nodded gravely and moved away from the threshold.

Fires flared in the braziers on the ends of the stage as the priest's assistants doused the coal with lamp oil. The choir and drones fell silent, but the drums continued more softly and all around her the people began a low chanting: “Draco, Draco”

a par of doors flew upon at the end of the stage. A____ stared, riveted, as a tall, powerful figure swept out of the open doors and stalked across the stage, his face concealed by the deep hood of his robe, which was of black silk. It billowed out behind him with each determined stride as he prowled to the center of the stage with a grace of a massive black leopard, The sheen of the material reflected the flickering fires that seemed to caress him as he passed. The robe hung open down the front, revieling his black trousers and boots, and his loose, white shirt with a deep, fringed V that partly bared his bronzed, sculpted chest. A____ gazed at him in wonder. Draco stopped and turned toward the crowd. White lace cuffs dripped below the sleeves of his robe, as he stretched forth his large, murderously elegant hands. She could not tear her gaze away.

Though his eyes and the upper half of his face were shrouded by the hood, she stared in fascination at his square, chiseled jaw and strong chin. Then he spoke, and his deep, mesmerising voice rolled over the crowd in natural command, filling the cavern. “Brothers and sisters!”

The people roared in adoration.

“Tonight we come together to welcome two new initiates into our most vile and ignominious company.” The throng cheered wildly at his insults; a small mocking smile flitted briefly over his beguiling lips. “They have been tested—and tasted—by the elders, as you all have,” he purred, “and they have been found worthy. Initiates, come forward and receive the final rite.” He pulled back his hood, unveiling a face of burning, satanic, male beauty.

A____ held her breath, enthralled, feeling the resounding slam of some fateful premonition. L____ K____. One look erased any lingering doubt in her mind who he was. He had the bold, patrician featured of a dashing adventurer ad silver eyes that glittered like diamonds. The glossy jet of his hair set off his sun bronzed complexion, and the wicked gleam of his smile.

Then she gasped as two naked women crawled up onto the stage and went to him on their hands and knees. Oh, God, don't let that be Caro. The women crouched at his feet, and A___ nearly fainted with relief to realize neither was her sister-in-law. “Draco” laid a hand on each one's head and began making incantation over them in the same incoherent language the pale young man had used. The women moaned, caressing him all the while. A___ watched their hands travel over his hard, lean body as if they could not get enough of him, and the writhing sensuality of the Grotto began to penetrate her naďve awareness. She could not stop staring in fascination at Caro's beautiful, evil lover. No wonder they called him Lord Lucifer, she thought. He was made for temptation.

He stood at the threshold of the house, looking out over the yard, his unscarred profile facing her. A sickening anticipation of loss hallowed out her insides. She resented that this man did not feel the same thing. Easy for him to send ***** away. He had barely paid the boy any attention at all since he found him. She examined the unwavering expression that said he privately contemplated many things, but not his son or her grief.

He had changed more than time could explain. The smiling happy youth had become encased in impenetrable layers, much like the insects captured in a few of the amber crystals that decorated his primitive tunic.

And yet she could see that boy in him still and could picture the fuller face before it had matured, could remember the generous mouth when it was mobile and quick to laugh and not an uncompromising line more frightening than the scar. and the eyes--how their golden lights had danced when he was young! now they glinted with danger and caution, full of tiny bonfires no one could see behind.

They were all afraid of him. the servants, the peasants, even *******. The piercing regard could reduce them o puddles of obedience. The severe expression brooked no defiance. The lean strength of his body and the pale slashing scar eloquently announced that he had survived far worse than any of them could offer. He still wore the buckskin garments sometimes, but even when he donned woven cottes and tunics his aura remained slightly foreign and mysterious, as if the barbarian ways had seeped into him in ways he could not shed so easily as clothing.

He heard her voice, like summer rain,washing over his senses as a cooling touch covered his brow. It didn't ease the heat raging through his body, but it was better than nothing. At least in this tortured, demented nightmare, she was speaking to him rather than taunting him, just out of reach, always slipping past his desperate touch.................

"God, just being close to you makes me wet."
Her little sigh had him tensing in need now. She was wet? She wanted? He was hard and willing to give. But he knew better than to open his eyes and reach out for her. When he did, the dream would be gone, as would her touch. And he needed her touch like the land needed the rain.He needed to soak in it, feel it inside him, soothing him, refreshing him.............

He was warm. The only time he was warm was when ***** had slept in his bed. He usually awakened from a healing chilled to the bone, damp with his own sweat and feeling like an animal that had lain in a gutter for two days.

You have in your hand an invitation to any event (party, ball, wedding, whatever) in romantic fiction. What's it going to be?

I thought of this as I was reading Promises in Death and found myself wishing so hard to get to go to Louise's bridal shower at Eve and Roarke's house. Bellinis, skinny-dipping, Trini to work on my hair, Ariel to make the food and lots of girly chat about Roarke's prowess (and Charle, McNab, etc). And then waking up at dawn for breakfast and hanging out with the "smart girls" to solve the crime. Love this group of friends, loved this scene. And while I've never thought to have one before, this is currently my favorite fictional party.

What's yours?

My only restriction is, you're attending as a guest, not as the heroine who gets to pounce on your favorite hero!

I saw this over at the Running With Quills blog and wanted to pass it along.

The author doing the blog is talking about how being a writer is a great job, but...(I've cut and pasted the info )

It’s all good, right? So what do we have to worry about? What could possibly go wrong...?

How about our books not getting to the bookstores? Not making it to the racks in WalMart or Target or the grocery store where you like to pick up the latest release? For an author with a book releasing, that’s a big deal, and it’s a problem facing the Quills right now—along with a lot of other authors who have books due to release in March and April.

With all the economic issues in this country, the last thing we want to worry about is the books actually making it to the shelves, but the company that does a huge amount of distribution across the country has locked their doors—including the doors to their warehouses where a lot of the new books are waiting for distribution.

What’s that going to mean? Well, it might mean that when you go to pick up Jayne Ann Krentz’s SIZZLE AND BURN, Book # 3 in the Arcane Society series, you won’t be able to find it. Or if you’re looking for Stella Cameron’s CYPRESS NIGHTS in paperback or BLUE SMOKE and MURDER by Elizabeth Lowell, or SCANDALIZED by Lori Foster, all you’ll find is a bare spot on the shelf. All those books are going to be sitting in boxes, locked up in warehouses, and eventually will be remaindered...covers ripped off and returned to publishers.

All is not lost, though. You’ll still be able to find your favorite authors’ newest books through your online book sellers—places like Amazon.com, BN.com, BAM.com and others will have them in stock, but we need your help. Please get the word out—let your friends know on the chat lists and email groups you belong to that the books scheduled for release over the next few months will still be available online, even if you can’t find them at the stores where you commonly shop for books.

How much do you go by "the" romance magazine ratings when you buy books? -- Judy, Tuesday, March 10, 10:18:51am
I have developed my list of favorite authors over the years, and lately I have pretty much stuck to them when buying romance books. However, there is one well-known author whose historicals I used to read many years ago - but then she switched to contemporary romantic suspense. I tried her first couple contemps, but found them too violent (violence for violence's sake - a lot of it not really needed for the plot) so I stopped buying her books. Then this year she released another historical and "the" romance magazine gave it 4 1/2 stars - their highest rating! So I bought it, even tho' it was a hardbound (which I usually do only for my very very fave authors - Robb, Brockmann, SEP, etc.). I got through maybe 50 pages - it was horrible! Unbelievable plot, poor character development, contrived or complete lack of motivation for the characters' actions, a heroine TS&STL (silly AND stupid), language not appropriate for the time period ... I took it to the UBS today. Who are the people who rate the books for this magazine??? Do they get in a rut in favor of a certain author??? Really, I think I'm pretty picky about what I read - and I wouldn't have given this book 2 stars, much less their highest rating! Okay, enough of my rant ... I know that this magazine's ratings can help or hurt a book, but I'm wondering if any you ReBeLs out there actually pay attention to their ratings!

- I saw that a popular book magazine only gave 3 stars to Adele Ashworth's WINTER GARDEN, but I had heard so many raves from RBL, that I went ahead and got it anyway, and it was fantastic! That was the beginning of the 'end of me buying book review mags'. On the same hand, I've gotten recommendations from here where someone said it was a great book, but I got it and said 'hrmph'. So, I guess its subjective for the most part (kinda what Linda said above). Many of us like different things, and thats a good thing. I, personally, don't try too many new authors because I'm so behind reading books from my faves, but Heather is a great one for supporting new authors and trying them out, and I usually agree with her recommendations. And if a book comes out in hardback, and its not one of my auto-buys, then I usually reserve it from the local library and then I don't feel too bad if I don't like it. LOL Sorry you had a stinker. - I have a couple of sites that I visit for reviews & opinions, especially for the authors I am not familiar. But to be painfully honest, I generally will open the book (randomly) and read. “Tell me, my clever Miss C_________,” he asked in a sinister purr as he pressed his advantage, stalking her aggressively through the room. “Are you in the habit of deceiving my aunt as you did me?”

“Obviously you have not heard a word I’ve said. I see there is no point in trying to reason with you in your present state.”

She cleared her throat, determined to bring the situation under control, backing away as he advanced, step by slow, tantalizing step. “Wh-why don’t you go upstairs, change out of your wet clothes, and have something to eat? Then perhaps you will be in a more receptive humor— ”

“Don’t…manage me, little miss,” he taunted just as she found her retreat blocked by the sofa behind her.

She blanched, bending back as he leaned closer, trapping her against the couch. Her heart pounded wildly.

All dressed in black and wickedly handsome, he loomed over her, his shoulders so broad she could no longer see the door behind him. She gasped when he reached out and captured her chin between his black-gauntleted fingers, raising her face to inspect her.

She stared up at him, wide-eyed. A cynical smile full of menace and mockery curled one side of his lips as he studied her at close range, his pale eyes gleaming with dangerous intelligence.

L_______ felt absurdly faint, a trifle dizzy. He smelled of winter and leather, wet horse and warm, ruthless male. For a moment, she could only watch, transfixed, as an ice crystal melted off his long, jet lashes with the throbbing heat of his body. Her gaze tracked the droplet’s trickling course down the scratched side of his sculpted face to the corner of his hard, beautiful mouth. When he licked it away, she caught her breath abruptly, jerking her face out of his light hold…

Once the door was closed, Luke removed his hat and handed it to the butler. “I’ve told you before that you need not stay up until I return home.”

“Yes, my lord, but, I thought it best to do so this evening.”

“And why is that?” Luke asked, tugging off his gloves.

“A lady arrived earlier.”

Luke stilled. “Who?”

“She wouldn’t say. She knocked at the servants’ entrance, said it was of paramount importance—a matter of life and death were her precise words—that she speak with you. She’s been waiting in the library ever since.”

Luke glanced toward the hallway. “And you have no idea who she is?”

“No, my lord, although I would venture to guess she is a lady of the utmost quality. She has that air about her.”

Over the years a few ladies of quality had sought out Luke’s bed. He lived a life of abundance that many had wanted to embrace, but he always made it clear that he offered nothing permanent. Some had simply wanted to play with the devil for a time. But none had ever claimed visiting him was a matter of life and death. How dramatic. The remainder of his evening promised to be entertaining.

He handed his gloves to Fitzsimmons. “See that we’re not disturbed.”

“Yes, my lord.”

His curiosity piqued, Luke strode down the hallway. No footman waited outside the door. He had no reason to believe his services would be required at this ungodly hour. Luke entered the library, slamming the door behind him, a grand entrance to disarm his visitor.

The woman standing at the window, gazing onto a garden hidden by darkness and fog, jerked around. The hood of her pelisse lay against her shoulders, its clasp interfering with what would have been a lovely show of skin from throat to bosom. Beneath the cloak, she’d dressed to seduce and for reasons he couldn’t fathom, he was suddenly very much in the mood for seduction.

“Lady Catherine Mabry, as I recall,” he said, sauntering nearer until he could smell the expensive perfume that wafted over her skin like the fragrance of a delicate rose.

Her blue eyes widened slightly. “I’d not realized you knew who I was.”

“I make it my business to know who everyone is.”

“You consider me your business?”

“Ah, yes, Lady Catherine. Isn’t that what you wanted when you challenged me that night at the ball?”

“Not particularly, no,” she muttered.

Mesmerized, he watched as her delicate throat moved ever so slightly as she swallowed—the only indication she gave that she was having second thoughts about being there. She was lovelier than he remembered—or perhaps it was simply that maturity agreed with her—and she still possessed the courage to hold his gaze. Or perhaps not. It wavered for a heartbeat as she glanced away while licking her lips. An invitation for something more intimate.

He trailed his finger along the soft flesh beneath her chin and her gaze jumped back to his. Beneath his touch, he could feel her pulse quickening, fluttering like a tiny moth that had dared to approach the flame and now realized it was left with no means of escape. It was obvious she was a novice when it came to the art of seduction, but no matter. He had enough experience to see them through.

“I know why you’re here,” he said, his voice low, provocative, a prelude to their lying beneath the silken sheets that adorned his bed.

She furrowed her delicate brow. Her features were exquisite perfection, carved by nature with obvious care and never altered by the harshness of life.

“How—” she began.

“Do not think you’re the first to try to trap me into marriage. I’m not easily caught.” He slid his finger along her flesh, down to the clasp at her throat. “I have little doubt your guardian stands just beyond the window, watching, waiting until the perfect moment to make his presence known.” With nimble fingers, he loosened the clasp and carefully slid the cloak off her shoulders until it pooled on the floor.

His body tightened with his unobstructed view of all she had to offer. He’d gone too long without a woman beneath him. Even if he were snared by her trap he would escape it easily enough. Cradling her face, he leaned nearer until his breath mingled with hers. “But even if he witnesses my removing your clothing, even if he sees you welcoming me with open arms and crying out in ecstasy, I will not marry you,” he whispered.

He heard her breath catch.

“I will not restore your reputation once tarnished.” He brushed his lips over hers. “If you get with child, I will not give you respectability. The price you pay for waltzing with the devil is residing in hell.”

He settled his mouth firmly over hers, not at all surprised that she acquiesced so easily. Even if she’d not come here to trap him, he knew what he was to her. A curiosity, nothing more. A bit of misbehavior before she settled into a respectable marriage with a lord whose lineage was never questioned behind his back.

She didn’t resist when he urged her lips to part. She moaned when he swept his tongue through her mouth, leaving nothing unexplored. Her hands gripped the lapels of his jacket, and he thought for a moment that she swayed. He reacted with a need so strong that it almost brought him to his knees.

Even as he cursed her and his own weakness, he recognized that he had no will to resist temptation. He would have her. She’d brought this moment upon herself by arriving at his doorstep. He was a man who always took advantage of opportunities presented, and she was presenting him with an opportunity for passion. It had been too long since he’d unleashed his desires. She would benefit from all that he had to offer this night, but no more than that. In the morning, she’d take nothing from him except the memories.

Tearing his mouth from hers, he bracketed her face between his hands and held her gaze. “Be sure this is what you want, my lady, for there will be no undoing once this is done.”

Her breaths coming in short gasps, she shook her head. “You misunderstand my purpose in coming here.”

“Do I?” he asked mockingly.

She nodded. “I want someone dispensed with. And I hear you’re just the man to do it.”

IT SNOWED, IT SNOWED,FINALLY IT SNOWED IN SC!!

Well I got my birthday wish of Snow!!! It snowed about 4 inches, which is not much compared to a lot of places, but it was a GREAT SNOW for here! We had a grand time building a snowman, having snowball fights and sledding. It was the first time my son has ever gotten to sled and he's had a new sled since he was 6 years old. (he'll be 13 next week) Unbelievable I Know! Of course, with every positive here these days comes a negative and that was..... we lost power from Sunday evening (It started snowing Sunday around 4:00 pm) until last night, Tuesday, at 6:30 pm. On another postive side I was out of work Monday and part of yesterday. I went in late day yesterday to do a little catchup but since my boss is out of town today it wasn't that bad. And it was freezing ass cold in the house, but my neighbors are from Michigan and they hooked up there generator yesterday and we stayed toasty at their house. My son did have school late day yesterday so he stayed warmed there. Anyway, THANKS RBL GALS for all the Snow dances you did for me!!!!!!!! It worked!!!

Well my year is complete now ....Spring and Summer can come on strong now!!!

Also, thank you Beth#1 and DebbieD for my birthday wishes!
