Maybe the question that needs to be answered, is how many people own BB's that have this drivey characteristic (desire and eagerness to work)? Is this or was this ever meant to be a drivey breed with a desire to work?

Although I think it would be great for personal reasons if it were possible. But a mastiff breed that weighs in at 120 to 180 lbs. and being capable of having "the desire and eagerness to work" in its genetic make up as a norm is maybe too much to hope for. It would be a quality that all of the mastiff fans would want and the BB would become very popular among the sporting crowds to say the least. I would think that the selective breeding that would have to take place to make it the norm would put the BB in risk of the same things that we try to avoid with the show people and their excessive tight linebreedings and inbreedings. Although, honestly the working crowds are not little angles either when it comes to this tunnel vision mentality that leads them to breed towards one goal and only one goal. Not to mention the small gene pool that is already here in this country for the BB.

Can we agree that breeding for mental and physical health can be achieved without breeding for high drives? And is this not what is most important, especially in a setting where the working characteristics are not needed, except by maybe a select few? If it is possible to achieve this drivey characteristic, would it benefit the breed or harm it? Are there not many other breeds that can exceed the performances of what can ever potentially be the "Working BB" ? Putting aside the romantic notion of the big mastiff type dog from SA that can perform like dogs half its size, what would be the likelihood that this breed would in reality end up on BSL lists all across the country?

Afterall look at the Rotts, AB's, (NOTE: These breeds are generally under 120 lbs.) Pitbulls, etc. All drivey breeds, and look what it has gotten them.

Just some thoughts,
Dan G.
