This will be a difficult one for you as Maritime Royal Artillery DEMS gunners are very difficult to trace.
All personnel, including military gunners, will have signed on ships' articles as members of the crew and therefore they can be traced via crew listings. However, the catch is you need to know the name of a ship. The crew agreement will usually show the name of the previous ship so you can work back through the crew agreements to find his service on merchant ships.

It may be worth putting his name into the Ancestry site <a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://www.ancestry.co.uk/">http://www.ancestry.co.uk/</a> in case he called in at any US port. Crew lists had to be lodged with the US authorities. This may give you the name of a ship if you are lucky.
