Hi john. You are right mate, it's the same the world over pretty much. A lot of refugees came to the uk during the war, and then there was the fifties when West Indians as they were known were invited in to cover labour shortfalls, yet we treat those who helped us most very badly at times. The Ghurkas have had to struggle for pension and residency rights, and now they want to make it difficult for Australians to get work visas.
In the fifties Brits got cheap emigration to Oz and some of them caused bad feeling and created the "Whingeing pom" back lash. Now they are buying up properties in France, Spain, and a lot of Eastern European countries which is forcing up prices and causing bad feeling, beacause the average Brit is wealthy compared to Poles Bulgarians etc. They are coming over here as a result to earn what to them is a big wage. In the early seventies, a lot of bad feeling was caused in New Zealand by Brits who emigrated there which started the "Punch a Pom a day" slogans. At the same time Oz had a lot of Turks move in which was also a cause of bad feeling over loss of jobs. Brits who have emigrated to Spain are now being targeted by Eastern Europeans for robberies because they have money. It will all end in tears eventually as grievances get worse. Very sad world my new grand kids are going to inherit.
