Joe's right, I essentially got the idea from the Body for Life website. I've been doing Atkin's diet for about 2 and a half years now. Atkins recommends 20 grams of carbohydrates per day for the first 2 weeks. After that you increase your carb level to a point where you are comfortable with it and can still lose weight. For me that is between about 30 to 50 grams a day. I don't exactly count them however. I just avoid certain foods. Breads (mostly), corn, potatoes, sweets, most flour, dried beans, anything starchy or sweet (unless it is artificially sweetened and therefore low carb).

Body for Life is for me more an excercise program than a diet. He does include a diet portion. He urges you to eat 6 meals a day (about every 3 hours) and he tells you to balance your protein and carbs, and only eat fist sized or palm sized portions. His diet is mostly low fat. He warns you that excess carbs will cause weight gain, but his diet isn't totally low carb.

When you are doing this much excercise, very low carb isn't easy. The excercises are done 6 days a week. The first Monday is upper body workout day. Tuesday is aerobics for 20 minutes (done in a specific way). Wednesday you work your lower body, Thursday and Saturday more aerobics, Friday is upper body again. Sunday is a free day when you can eat whatever and not excercise, but when the second Monday comes you are back to lower body workout. Upper body and lower body are alternated with one of them being done twice during the week, and the other once.

How I learned about it is by buying the book. Called "Body for Life". You really shouldn't try any of the diets without first reading the book. Most people who do wind up doing something wrong and then can't understand why they aren't losing. It is very important to understand the theory behind a certain diet or excercise philosophy.

Atkins or Protein Power are good books to start with if you are comtemplating low carb. BFL is a very committed way of living, and whereas anyone can do it, you need to be ready for some solid committment before you start. If you aren't I would urge you to start with Atkins or something a little less "intense".
