Our mini challenge is to go with no cheats through Friday, May 31st. Feel free to join in if you'd like. We also have another challenge starting on June 1st. For the month of June, the rules are that if you do cheat, pick yourself up and get going right again right away.

Water is very important for a number of reasons. Caffeine is a diuretic. For every ounce of caffeinated beverage that you take in, your body needs two ounces of water to make up for the damage. Caffeine causes insulin spikes in some people which can cause carb cravings. Aspartame which is in diet Coke can cause some people's weight to stall. Try switching to Diet Rite Cola or Diet RC (no caffeine and no aspartame and still tastes great). The water goal to many people is 64 ounces (8 cups) plus 8 ounces for every 25 pounds they are overweight. This would translate into 72-80 ounces for you. I don't think that it hurts to get part of your water from other drinks as long as those drinks do not contain caffeine. There are many who will disagree with this. Do what works for you. I had a lot of trouble drinking water and worked my way up to it by drinking 16 ounces of water and rewarding myself with one can of soda. I gradually cut back on the number of caffeinated sodas that I allowed myself and managed to give up caffeine in about 6 weeks. Before that I was drinking 6-12 diet Cokes a day.

Have you read any of the low-carb books? Have you chosen a plan to follow? It can be really helpful to have the book for the plan that you choose, as it can explain how this works, why it works, and some of the things to look out for. If you haven't chosen a plan, Laura Richard's book "The Secret of Low Carb Success" (available at amazon.com) is a wonderful book that describes all of the plans and what is good/bad about each of them.

I hope that some of this helps. Congratulations on your son, and on your planned vacation. The trip sounds like it will be a wonderful reward/incentive for your weight loss.
