Okay, we're home from the vet's office. The first blood glucose that Chicory had done over 3 weeks ago was 597. After being on the Purina DM since then, today it was 372.........better but still not great. Glucose needs to be between 80-120 but Dr. Larry said they wouldn't panic at a 200. So Chicory's now officially on insulin. Denise, I'm not going to have time today to get to the diabetic board and start posting but I figured I'd pass along the info and see if you had any words of wisdom to offer. The insulin is PZI and Ken's to give him 2 units (.05cc) once per day after he eats, preferably at the same time every morning. And we were both shown how to give the injections so I can be backup for Ken if need be. Between the insulin, the office visit, the lab work and then running to the pharmacy for the syringes, I'm now about $150 poorer but what the hey? It's only money, right? -- Piggy's Pad

Most people on the cat board will say that one shot a day won't work, there is no insulin made to last 24 hours so you feed, inject and by the time you feed again it's dead and the next 12 hours will be high. FIrst thing I'd do with a cat is get them off dry food so that grain is cut out, canned of any kind has fewer carbs. My sister fed her cat nothing but the lower glycemic Fancy Feast flavors and raw turkey, ground beef and tuna. How much does Chicory weight? Does he ened to lose weight? Some vets just move too slow on this, they try diet only first, then add one shot per day and finally they get to the 2 shots but you still have to find the right dose. Lots of vet costs this way. You want a meter? Most vets charge 13-16.00 per blood draw and test strips are .50 to 1.00 each. My sister kept her meters in case someone wanted one. Aww, I was hoping that maybe the food would have been able to get Chicory's levels where they belonged....I've never given a cat (or anyone) a shot before, does it look like it will be hard for you and/or Ken to do? You are going to be lucky here with Denise's help and then too when you get to the Diabetic Board...Im sure they will really be able to give you some invaluable pointers.....Good Luck... Kate, the needles are small and most animals don't notice. Some people give the shot while the animal eats and they don't even flinch. Bogie comes to me and lowers his head, he's so dear! Molly is a drama queen but I think that's cause she dealt with people that were scared, she's gotten much better. My sisters cat was good too, Connie put a towel on the counter so he wouldn't slide around, tested his blood and then gave his shot. He knew food was after all that. Just our own experience here. We have 2 cats on 2 shots each every day. My husband (diabetic himself) injects both during their meals. Diabetic cats seem so hungry/interested in their small portion of wet food that they do not even notice... -- Mary Ann, 6:10:27 am, Thu, 12/20/07
He prepares each syringe just prior to placing the small food bowls on the kitchen floor. I do not make any moves into the kitchen during this time so they do not suddenly move or look around as cats do when they hear a sound. Sandy, think of it this way. A cat can eat nothing but meat, they don't need veggies, grain or fruit. If you don't feed carbs then insulin needs are less.
