it's snowing pretty good here this morning..sure hope it's our last snow of the season!!!!!

I hope it's your last snow too. I hate to tell you but (according to the radar) there's not a single cloud in the entire state of Kansas, there's beautiful sunshine and we're headed for the mid 70's. I've had all of the windows open since 9 a.m. and it's gorgeous!! So glad to hear you're feeling better. Those antibiotics *really* are wonder drugs, aren't they? But I still think it's a good thing that you're seeing the doctor on Wednesday. I saw one doctor last Wednesday and see the other on the 30th. Doing okay here, but not great. I've been completely busy on the phone this morning. As of May 2nd, we're dropping our land line and will be totally cellular. We both use our cells more often than the house phone anyway and my two girlfriends are both on Verizon, along with the kids, so we can call cell to cell and not use minutes. Besides, I hate having to cart two phones around the house with me all of the time. So.........I'm calling the bank, all of the doctors, etc. to have our landline taken out of records and our cells shown as the primary phone. I didn't realize how much calling this would involve. But I'm almost done. And this afternoon, I have the rep from our alarm company coming out to start the process on an upgraded system that will use their "Prime Cell" technology. me again...I can't imagine changing everything to your cell..that that to be a job!! We still have our land-line at home, and probably will for awhile (at least until something happens to my Dad..he gets way too confused when I tell him to just call me on my cell..he has no idea how to dial it....) but I know a lot of people around here use their cells exclusively too. It HAS been a huge job. But I have all of the numbers for the doctors, dentist, eye doctor, vet, etc. programmed into the house phone so I've just been going down the list in the phone and calling everybody. I only have one left to do and that's our pharmacy. When we use their automated refill line, they ask for the last 4 digits of your phone number. So I have to find out what to do about that. Hey, don't feel badly, Kate. I get confused too. Let's see.....last Wednesday, it was the rheumatologist. No changes there. I was hoping I could get off one or possibly two medications, especially since Gerry's insurance plan is changing and our co-pay is going up. But no such luck. What little relief I'm getting has taken a lot of medication roulette and there aren't many other drugs to try. And I'm seeing my internist on the 30th, probably to go over my meds from him and get blood work. But since our insurance starts again on May 1st, I wanted to get in to see him before I start all over again with a new deductible. Oh......don't feel bad about email either. I'm not really good about sitting down and writing email. It's not that I don't want to, it's just that there's other things demanding of my time. So I understand. We had a cooler day yesterday... about 75 and overcast. Today back up to almost 90 tho.
No going totally cell here. We share only 500 min. a month (also Verizon), and with my rescue work, and calling of volunteers, I'm on the phone ALL day some days! I probably log a couple thousand hours a month at least! Plus, the home phone number has been the same since mom and dad moved in here... Stop feeding NAtural Balance Venison and Brown Rice dog food and Natrual Balance Venison and Green Pea cat food. Reports of vomiting and possible kidney problems. Oh, crap, Denise!!! Natural Balance is what we feed. Not the venison and green pea but the regular Feline Maintenance. I had emailed Natural Balance about two weeks ago and they assured me that there was no gluten in their food and they use no products from Menu foods. This thing is getting scary. I wonder, tho, how many people are reporting problems out of panic? My BIL swears he got some tainted food that made his dogs sick... but he was feeding Ol Roy dry, which has no gluten nor was it recalled. Everyone is panicking. Don't you just hate it when you come home that tired and dragged out?? Makes you wonder if that big semi has been hiding around corners again, just waiting for you to walk by. And hey, I'm glad you didn't get picked for a jury. With my history, I can't serve on any criminal trials at all......the judges won't let me.....so even if the lawyers try to seat me, the judge kicks me out. I *can* serve on a civil jury but so far I haven't been "lucky" enough to get picked. Since we moved here, I've been nailed for jury duty 3 times and Gerry? Not once!! And your sickness?? I'd bet anything you probably have bronchitis, Ramona. The coughing like that is a tip-off. Time to call your doctor and get on some antibiotics and/or an inhaler. You don't want to end up like me. Well, I asked for cooler weather, and got it...... Unfortunately, the cooler weather came about due to a very severe sand storm. We had winds at almost 60 mph. This made my sinuses flare up, so I was in bed with a killer headache yesterday! Today is not so windy, thank goodness. It did drop us down from mid 90's to about 80 tho. Not sure if it's worth the headache tho??!

So glad to hear that Dommie is feeling better. But that sand storm sounds horrible. We were supposed to get 1 - 3 inches of snow out of this storm system but all we got was a lot of rain. I woke up at 4:30 and looked outside, fully expecting the ground to be white but we were just wet. Places south and west of us though got up to a foot of snow. Best of Luck Kate for your medical appointment next Wednesday. Sinus infections are a pain. Don gets those too, but he does not get any swelling. Hope the doctor can help you. Be careful and should you feel a small painful lump (besides the swelling) forming somewhere on your leg, please let ER staff know immediately. Uh oh Kate, I sure hope everything turns out ok. I wish they could get you in sooner. Mine is only a week so far but very very slow at going away. Oh, geez, Kate. I'm way late on getting here and now I see that you've posted this! I sure wish they could get you in to see the PA sooner but you have to take what you can get, I guess. I'm praying that it's just a complication from your sinus infection but the first thing that came to my mind when you mentioned your leg swelling was *blood clot.* I also feel for you about going through the *doctor* thing. More pet foods have been added to the recall list and it appears that some retailers haven't been very good about removing the tainted product from their shelves. I've included the newest recalls inside but our news also mentioned that there's some possibility that this wheat gluten might have made it into the HUMAN food area and the government has asked doctors/hospitals to be extra vigilant regarding kidney problems/failure in people!! Wow, Vicki. Thanks for posting this information. I'm going to have to read it several times and let it all sink in but I've argued with my vet in the past about getting shots every year. Just recently, he's started to talk about doing shots every other or even every third year. I also think a part of it is the income factor. The vets KNOW they will lose money if they're not giving those immunizations. On the flip side, we're also paying enough for yearly physicals, dentals and the occasional "whatever" that pops up with the cats. So, I'm totally with you on this one. I figure if I only have to get boosters of my shots every ten years or so, why am I letting someone stick a needle and a possibly toxic vaccine into my babies!!! You made excellent points here. for one thing, I have to give her the rabies shot it's the law here in PA.....
about the other shots, you've brought up a lot of good and very smart points, but I guess I also have to say I trust Dr. Lee, and yes, she is making money when she sees Maggie and gives her her shots, but I don't feel she would recommend this if she didn't think it was important....maybe I'm being naieve, but for now, I'm comfortable with her plans for the shots... Boy, it sounds like you had a really good day as far as the checkup goes. I wish all of ours would go that well. But I'd sure like to know how you got Maggie to lose a few pounds. I've been working with Cinnamon and Emme and it's sure not working for them. As for the shots, I get the least amount possible these days. All I really want them to have is the upper respiratory one. Since they don't go outside at all, they don't need leukemia and even though our state law mandates the rabies, we don't do that either. That sounds great. Always happy to hear about good checkups. 4 of mine go next week. I don't get Julie vaccinated anymore at all, with her problems, but the others, I don't allow them to vaccinate each year anyway and the only ones I get are rabies and distemper. Still a lot of controversy on those shots but it seems to me that if immunity iworks for peopole after only one shot, it ought to be the same for cats. But, I'd like to ask, why the luekemia? Does she go out at all? I thouight that was a once and done thing, I didn't realize that one was yearly. So, she is the same age as Julie now, 11! Still seems like yesterday. Please keep Dominoe in your thoughts! After her last heat, she developed mastitis. She's on antibiotics and hot packs to her belly several times a day. Happy Tuesday! Our temps are crawling upwards again, which is nice. I'd gotten used to having the windows open and the heat turned off. The cats aren't happy with the heat being back on again too. Today is supposed to be rainy, which is fine with me except that now I want to go back to bed since it's gray and gloomy outside. But since we have pool tonight, that's not gonna happen. I didn't cook either. It's becoming something of an Easter tradition for us. After church, we go to Coyote Canyon, which is our local buffet place. But we did have a great dinner and didn't even feel rushed. Then I got to come home, finish reading the paper and took a long afternoon nap with 4 of the cats. Perfectly heavenly. UGH! So sorry you are sick now too hon! This has been a bad year so far for illness!! Danny's had 3 bad head colds and a tummy bug already this year, and it's only April!!!! I have had a lot of "just don't feel good" days, but only one bad head cold so far. I think the other is stress/fibromyalgia/sinuses. Awww, Ramona, I feel for ya. There's never a good time to be ill but being sick on Easter, of all things, is the pits. So far, I've been able (knock on wood) to avoid the germs floating around out there but I have other pressing problems. Gerry's office just got and signed their new contract for health insurance with BC/BS. Our deductible went up, along with our co-pays for drugs. So Gerry and I sat down with the drug list to go over it, comparing what I'm taking. Then I had to call a rep with BC/BS. Since I've got two doctor's appointments coming up in the next couple of weeks, I'm taking the drug list with me to see if the doctors can switch a couple of my medications to cheaper generics. Right now, I'm taking 7 meds and if I can't get rid of a couple or get cheaper alternatives, I'm in trouble.......and so are our finances. I don't feel that most of my meds do me much good anyway, so we'll see. I'm really glad we *have* drug coverage but geez, this is a total stressor. (NT) -- Sandy, 9:55:13 am, Sat, 04/07/07

I also wanted to say think you to everyone for your love and support with our losing Mikey. I believe we lost him because of the contaminated food. Mikey sometimes got the Nutro food packets since he was prone to blockages and needed the extra fiber/moisture. He went downhill so fast, and he just didn't respond to treatment well. Unfortunately, we found out about the recall after the fact, and I don't have food receipts or packages left to prove anything. I am reading food labels diligently now, and won't feed ANYTHING with Wheat Gluten in it! I had wondered if Mikey had gotten caught up in the food recall/poison food. The timing just seemed suspicious. We also think that Snowy may have eaten some of the tainted food but his blood work has all come back negative. All I know is that presently, he absolutely will NOT eat any canned food when it's offered to him. And I think we're going to be taking him back to the vet. Since this 5 week episode when he wasn't feeling well, he's now eating massive amounts of dry food but not gaining any weight and he's got diarrhea. So we'll be taking a stool sample with us. Poor little baby. That's got to be very scary for you and for her. The only thing I could possibly suggest is to spray outside and pay special attention to the doors and windows. I usually spray all around the foundation and the basement windows when the weather gets warm enough for the bugs to start moving. Like you, I *refuse* to spray inside because of the cats. Can she get on some kind of permanent allergy pill that would help take care of the bites BEFORE she goes into shock? I mean, if you can't exterminate, maybe a preventive pill could help. ALso, when you vacuum, make sure to change the bag each and every time and put the dirty bag int he garbage with a tightly closed lid. It's common for the bus/spiders to make their way out of the bags and back into the house. Or do they make any kind of insecticide that is pet safe? I doubt it, but there might be. OH Sorry, guess I forgot to mention she is on antihistamines on a daily basis. She gets them 3 times a day and has since the first episodes last summer. She gets her last pill for the day at bedtime. If she didn't, she'd probably be dead!!! We use a shop vac to vacuum, since we have no carpet, and it gets dumped after every use. I am probably going to order some Diatomaceous Earth to sprinkle all around the baseboards and the outside of the house. The Food Grade stuff is safe around pets but lethal to insects as it cuts them to ribbons when they walk thru it. Unfortunately, I have a feeling a lot of these spiders are coming from the crawlspace under the roof. There is 3 feet of insulation blown up there, and it's probably a great breeding ground for bugs. I have upped Gilly's allergy meds to get us thru Baby Bug season tho... She takes Teledron, btw. I give her Benedryl on top of that if she gets bit. (NT) -- VikiKat, 8:16:24 am, Sat, 04/07/07

It was so hot in the house and even with the windows open, it was too warm. We had a huge storm roll through just before 5 a.m. with lots of rain and about two hours later, the cold front arrived. It was still 70 degrees when I went out for the paper and we're now down to about 58 with a stiff north wind. I've got the windows open and the cats are going crazy with the cool air. Happy Good Friday, everybody. I guess that's kind of a misnomer since it is Good Friday. What is everyone doing for Easter? Anything good? We'll just be going to church as a family and then out to dinner, since Easter is the one holiday where no one cooks. Oh, and Kate? How much snow did you get? We were lucky to only get a few flurries that just looked like sequins in the air but virtually nothing on the ground. But just 90 miles west of us, there's 6 inches on the ground. Just checked the Hills Prescition Diet Page and as of March 27, prescription md is so far the only one they have recalled in the prescription diet foods. It is the only one containing wheat gluten. There are SOOOO many people in my rescue coalition who have lost dogs and cats to kidney failure in the past few months.... it is HORRID! A lot of us feed what is donated, and a lot of the donated food is on the recall lists. Everyone is just so angry and upset..... so many lives lost, and we've all spent a fortune at our vets. I spent over $2000 trying to save Mikey (who ate one of the recalled foods), and I just want to scream at the companies at fault! My mom heard today that there is no sign of leukemia! Kind of surprised us as I thought the drug was just going to control it but it's gone! Thanks for your prayers! Molly sees eye vet Wed. I've been thinking, when Bogie had one eye that didn't clear I took him to a holistic vet and he gave him a Chinese med for the liver. The eye cleared right up and was never a problem again so I think I will try and get an appt. next week. Leon gets his stictches out tomorrow and I'm sure that will feel better. Kate, I thought leukemia was leukemia but Mom's dx made me read about it. There are 4 kinds of leukemia, 2 acute and 2 chronic. Myelogeous and lymphocytic. Hers was chronic myleogenous (spelling these stinks!) Anyway, chronic is always better but it can still kill people, some die in 5-7 years but this new drug is only a couple years old, I think and they are having great results. I also think hers was caught early, no symptoms yet but the whilte count messed up. Anyway, we are thankful! Now Leon wants to itch his back but can't reach it! He says it's feels so much better! Molly's report was good, she goes back in 2 months and the drops are reduced to one drop and only 3x a day! Yeah! Supposed to be nice tomorrow and I hope to golf! If my shoulder will let me. I fell last night and thought I'd broke my collar bone but didn't. Ribs and butt hurt too! and my right elbow is one BIG bruise! Kind of stiff but would love to get outside and swing a club! It's been an interesting Saturday. I woke up to clearing skies and lots of wind but then the clouds swept in and our temp is going downhill. We were at 62 and now we're a chilly 51. But we sure got our share of rain. Over the past 4 days, we've gotten 4 inches of rain. Gerry is out mowing now simply because if he left it any longer, we would have been able to bale it and sell it. But the lawn sure is beautiful and lush. Not much going on around here this weekend since we ran our one and only errand on our way home from dinner at the Longhorn last night. Now it's my turn to apologize for not being here the past several days. It's been a very busy week but it's going to slow down. I was officially released from PT yesterday afternoon with a handshake and an apology. I've had four different therapists and they've done everything they know to do but there's no help for me. Oh, they know what the problem is but have no idea what more they can do and what they HAVE done has been of no help. So, at this point, I either learn to live with it or start the rounds with an orthopedist to get an MRI and try to see what's going on with my hip. It's the IT band that's causing all of the pain but I've been through water therapy, massage (Ooohh, that felt good, even if it didn't help), stretching and even TENS, with no relief. Oh, sure, they tell me that it's my pride and I need to get over that, especially since it *does* help, but it makes me feel like a decrepit, old lady. On the flip side, my foot brace is helping my left foot and ankle. I've got one pressure point that really hurts when I'm wearing the brace, which is where one of the collapsed foot bones presses into the brace and we're trying to work around that with extra padding. Thank God for BC/BS since I got my statement on the brace and that puppy cost $735. So I hope it lasts for a good, long while. On the GOOD side, Gerry's home from work today. I LOVE having him home and it was a surprise to me when I picked him up yesterday and found out that he was going to be off work. We're going out to dinner later at the Longhorn and then home to relax. My sisters have called and I've gotten an email from my one aunt, so it's already been a perfect day! I don't even mind the rainy weather we've been having (over 2 inches of rain over the past 2 days) because our lawn is lush and green and we're now wet instead of so incredibly dry. Sandy, I do so understand not having the time sometimes to come to the board on a daily basis. Sometimes life just interrupts and takes over all our free time. I am sorry that none of the four therapists are able to help you. My Mom has been in a lot of pain and the only thing that brings her some sort of relief (but no cure) is Acupuncture. I understand your frustration also, one would think that in this time of modern technology and medicine some of your doctors could come up with a helpful answer. Hello Everyone. I am sorry that I have not had time to be here these past days. I have been busy with the fashion show program pamphlet I have been designing for my club. It is finally back from the printer's and is looking good. This Monday at noon will be the fashion show and after that I can relax for a bit. Took Mooch to vet again for his recurring runny eyes, but vet checked him all out and said he is very healthy and eyes are due to those Texas allergies. She gave me some ointment as she does not want to put him on stronger meds yet. So far so good and we hope for the best. Dusted and vacuumed like a crazy woman and ran both fans on my a/c unit continuouly to make sure there is clean air without allergens and pollen around my boy. Okay. It's morning. And Tuesday at that. My *run* day. I'd like nothing better than to go back to bed and just sleep the day away. It's really dark and gloomy outside and we're finally getting some much needed rain. Just checking in, the weekend got away from me! We are having warmer temps since 1990 and personally I'd like to go back to normal temps for awhile. It was HOT today! Molly gets another eye check up Wed. Don't know if there is an alternative treatment cause this one isn't getting the red out of her eyes. She feels fine at least. Leon gets his stitches out Wed, they are starting to bother him. I'm still having som cruddy days and really need to figure out how to change that. Maybe nice weather will help. Morning to you, Denise. I've got to agree with you on the weather. Our high Sunday was 83 and that's too warm for this time of year. It's been so freaking humid that the toilet's sweating and I'll tell ya, I absolutely REFUSE to turn the a/c on in March! We've had all of the windows open and the whole house fan on but it doesn't seem to help much. But at least for the end of this week, we're supposed to be back in the more normal temp range, which will be nice. And my gas bill appreciates it now that the furnace isn't running. I hope you can figure out something to help Molly but if she's feeling good, that's a good thing. And poor Leon. I know about those stitches itching........I went through that when I had that biopsy on my upper back. It was hard to not rip the stitches out with my fingernails. Kate, you asked below if maybe Snowy had eaten some of the poison food. Since the recall is now going back to December 3rd, we think it's very possible. We were feeding Cinnamon, Cricket and Snowy canned Nutro Max Cat and some of it was the chunky cuts in gravy. It was about that time that Snowy, but ONLY Snowy, got sick and quit eating, playing, etc. We had him to our vet but he couldn't find anything wrong with him and then we took him several days later to an emergency vet hospital and had them run blood work. Everything came back normal. Thank God. But it still took him another two weeks to snap back and now, he's finally acting like Snowy. Happy, playful and into everything. And he's talking again. I talked with our vet this morning and he said that he doesn't think we have anything to worry about since all 3 cats are behaving normally (whatever that is) but.......... If we're still worried about it, we can bring all 3 of them in to the office and they'll run a urinalysis on them. Thankfully, Joey and Emme don't like and won't eat canned food. But we were really stressing since Snowy lost FIVE pounds, which is fully 1/3 of his weight. He's still awfully bony, at least in our opinion, but he's eating like there's no tomorrow. I mean, he eats constantly. I think he's trying to catch back up. But Dr. Shipman doesn't want him to gain back all of the weight that he lost, since he was just a hair on the heavy side, even though he's a big cat. So.........for now, I think we're just going to let things be. And more good news ------- now that we have Cricket's stomatitis back under control (with those darned depo-medrol shots), he's gained back 1 pound 4 ounces of the weight he'd lost. We ran into our cat sitter today and she wanted to know how the cats were doing, since we haven't used her to sit for the cat's since we went to Maine in '04, right after Dad died. I mean, of course there are side effects but usually onbly after they have been on it regularly for years. My vet sais that cats don't experience the same dreaded side effects as people do. Not really a problem with the shots, per se. But it would appear that Cricket will have to stay on the depo-medrol shots indefinitely to control the stomatitis and eventually, the steroid causes liver and kidney damage and then causes diabetes. I do realize, really, I do, that it's a wonder drug in that it almost immediately heals Cricket's mouth and throat and he can eat but I just hate the thought of having him on a medication, long term, that's going to cause side effects that will kill him. That's my only problem. I guess we put too much faith in the hope that removing his teeth would take care of the problem. Darn it all, anyway! You'd think, just ONCE, we could be lucky. For her lupus. It's the only thing that brings her relief from her rheumotoid like symptoms. The vet said to try to keep her off it as much as possible and so we only give them when she really really needs it . So, the less often she gets it, the better. So we don't do the whole monthly preventive thing anymore because she dpoesn't seem to need them that often at all anymore. Maybe one or two a year at most. It is all that helps her pain and me and Neil both said that there is no way we could let her live in pain, so we do what we can and hope that the kidney side effects stay away a good long time. I am lucky though that she does drink a alot and if it were up to her, she would eat ALL canned food, so she is very well hydrated and that will help her kidneys. Hubby got a few good pics of a turkey gaggle (is that the right word for a group of them) eating all the bird seed off the ground. So cool, but I never get to see them in real. I did get to see a real fox in the yard last summer. That was neat. Neil is doing well and to answer a few questions some of you have.....the treatment for vertigo is basically excersises to make yourself dizzy, hold it and in a sense you are re-training your brain to learn to live with the new motion. The excersises do that. So far so good with the patch but he said today it is not enough! Sandy, the bullet he dodged is the family genes. Every single member, except him now, has had a stroke, diabetes or heart attack and died and they usually occur in the early 40's. So, he is very lucky. It is a huge burden lifted off his shoulders. Neil is a pretty heavy smoker. I was told by my pharmacist that some people use a 21 mg. and a 7 mg. patch together. When I had my heart attack I was told I could use a 21 and a 14 together. Morning, all. Vicki, my prayers and thoughts are with you, Danny and your other critters. I hope Mikey had a peaceful passing and he's now whole, healthy and happy, playing at the Bridge. As for me, I spent yesterday doing my running thing, first at PT and then with the podiatrist. Got to spend a very few minutes at home to get the worst of the kitty fuzz vacuumed up before picking Gerry up at work. It was a beautiful day -- high in the mid 60's and lots of sun. Today, we're expecting rain this morning and severe thunderstorms this afternoon. We need the rain but I could do without the sound effects and light show. My daughter was feeding Lucy and Topper some of the Science Diet canned but this was prior to December and she's already talked with her vet. They don't foresee a problem but good grief. I can't believe it..........another weekend where we have nothing to do and no where to do. How wonderful!! I got to sleep for an obscene amount of time last night and the temp was already 62 when I got up. The windows are open, the sun's shining and the cats are loving it. Our neighbor across the street is actually MOWING today. (methinks it's a little early for that!) I've got some puttering around the house to do but other than that, just a relaxing day. Leon isn't to lift more than 10 pounds till stcitches are removed and he can't bend or extend his arms. He ain't worth anything right now, helpless! Well, at least he can bathe himself! : ) Molly has been out of her cone collar all day today! Yippee!!! She is such a cuddler and head butter that I've missed that alot with that chucnk of plastic banging around. Have to get Bogie in for testing, labs and ACTH soon and haven't gotten Shaq in for that lump either, I'm a bad mom. He is acting normal and the bump isn't tender so....this past week was awful but next week is clearer so maybe I will get everything caught up. Take care all! Denise, at least he's home and that's an improvement over a few days ago. But it's got to be hard on BOTH of you when he's that helpless. And I'll bet Molly is as happy to be rid of that collar as you are to have her out of it.
