Thank you for asking, Kate. Sorry for not getting here sooner but today has been hellish. I've got one very sick kitty and right now, my back door rug is soaking in the bathtub. The news on Chicory isn't good but it isn't totally bad either. He had a chiropractic adjustment on his spine yesterday since he had several vertebrae that were way out of line. But his blood work shows that his kidney function is still okay (a major miracle on a 17 year old cat) but he does have diabetes. As I said, Ken is short on funds and long on bills so Mom and Dad (namely us) are reworking our budget to see what we can cover and pay for on Chicory's bills since we also have Cricket to think of. He needs a prescription diet at $30 for a 12 pound bag (ouchie!!!) which Gerry has already gotten from the vet. (NT) -- Sandy, 11:40:15 am, Wed, 11/21/07
The vet said that the food alone might be enough to kick-start his pancreas into producing insulin again since this is a new condition........Chicory was just in to the other vet four months ago and was fine. But if that doesn't happen, then we're looking at insulin injections, which I know Ken can do. And I'll be there also to go over everything with the vet and get all of the information I can. Even though Chicory is 17 (our best guess), I can't just let him die. He's always been in good health and is such a sweet, loving, mellow cat. The insulin costs, though, could choke us a bit. Depending on which insulin he needs and how much he needs, a vial costs between $60-90 but can last up to 3 months. Like I said, we're trying to re-work our budget and find the money for Chicory's expenses on top of Cricket's. And we have some unsettling news on Cricket. He was just in for another depo shot and immediately got another lump in the injection site, so we're going to have to try something different. Cricket's body is showing signs of not tolerating the injections, even though the steroid works wonders on his mouth. I know that the oral prednisolone caplets don't work with Chicory so I don't know where we'll go from here. Anyway, yesterday afternoon, when Gerry got home from work, I dropped him off at Terry's to lay claim to our table and I went off to the vet's to pay Ken's bill...............$125........gulp!! I guess that's what credit cards are for but they still have to be paid off. I got to talk to Travis (the younger vet and the one that does the chiropractic and the accupuncture), since he was the one who had seen Chicory. I had more information given to me in 15 minutes, on both cats, than I could retain. So I'll be hoping to pick Denise's brain and do some homework on my own. Either way, Christmas just got a lot leaner around here. But, in the long run, Cricket and Chicory are worth it. Now we just have to pay for it. (NT) -- Sandy, 11:55:57 am, Wed, 11/21/07

I sure hope they can get Chicory's Blood Sugar where it belongs...that would be great if the food itself could get him under control. How does Ken feel about giving shots? I would be scared in the beginning I'm sure, but I think I could do it once I got used to it.....I have no idea how Maggie would handle t hat though....I sure hope things go ok with Chicory....I see Denise and Ramona have already given you some good advice and ideas....that's so good to see!! Sandy, very few diabetic cat people feed the rx food. They say Fancy Feast is about the best and there is a site that tells which varieties have the lesser carbs. As for insulin, vets usually go with PZI and it can be 80.00 or more. Many cats are human insulin, it's N and 18.00 a bottle at WalMart. The PZI insulin also requires U$) syringes which cost more than the human ones. I pay 12.00 for 100 and my sister using PZI and U40 syringes, the syringes were 30.00 and also a much larger needle. I will email you a message board link for cat diabetes , these people will jump right in and help! You will be amazed by this group. Cats CAN be helped by diet alone but depending on how high his glucose was and how he is acting. Ken could apply to IMOM for help from the diabetic fund, you just have to show need. Oh Geez, I hope this all works out for Chicory and Ken. You know, shots aren't so bad, when you know you have to do them. It is wonderful to know that he is 17 and only just now got ill. That says a lot for his dad and his care! And I am really sorry to hear about Crickets problem. Is there any chance a liquid oral steroid will work? I ask because that is what Missy is on for her liver. For 2 1/2 years now and she is doing great. Plus, it is flavored so she doesn't mind taking it. Also, one other alternative is transdermal steroid. A lotion you rub on the ear tip. Not sure what you mean by caplets not working on Cricket. Dopes that mean he won't take them or they simply don't work on his disease? Not sure if depo comes in transdermal or oral liquid but it's worth asking. Good luck with all of this. Happy Monday, all!! Just think.........it's already Wednesday (considering the short week!) So - - - - who's cooking for Thanksgiving? We have a 22 Butterball thawing in the fridge and everything else has been purchased and is just waiting for the proper time. It remains to be seen if we'll need to freak the cats out by bobbing the turkey in the bathtub, trying to finish the thawing cycle. All of the cats usually go crazy, lining up at the edge of the tub, watching the turkey bob in the cold water. I keep saying that it's time for someone else to take over cooking the turkey but I can't imagine Thanksgiving without the good smells of the turkey and all of those wonderful leftovers! Our weather, though, is really strange. Today, our high is supposed to be close to 80 and a record. Tomorrow, I think the weather guy said we should be right at about 72. Then, on Wednesday, a front comes through and the bottom drops out. Then we're expecting rain mixed with snow with the possibility of a trace to 3 inches. You know how the weather people are..........they won't commit themselves to anything. But Thursday should be clear and cold. Gerry put our outside Christmas lights up this weekend since it was so warm outside but I've still got flowers blooming in the front bed where he put the lights. But whatever the weather brings, we're good to go. All of the groceries are in the house and we have plenty of everything. Gerry even got kitty litter this weekend and we have cat food ordered and coming to the door so the cats are set too. It's been a beautiful morning (I've had the windows open since before 7 a.m.) and it's been a beautiful fall. Even though I might not feel that great, we have much to be thankful for and my mood is good. BTW..the tree is up and all decorated..BUT I changed my mind on the "theme" so I un-decorated it this morning.....took all the colored balls off, and I'm on my way to the Christmas store right after work for all blue and white balls......and will probably re-decorate it tonight!! I've got a lot of Hallmark ornaments too, those I will leave on, so this year my tree will have white and blue lights, along with all white and blue balls, with the Hallmark Ornaments...I haven't changed it in years...last year we added the blue lights (the small twinklie kind) and what a nice difference it made....can't wait to see it with all the white and blue balls this year...now I may need a new tree skirt too, the one I have is red (with Snoopy on it) I'll have to wait and see how it looks..... You're so far ahead of me on the tree issue. I don't even want ours up for a couple of weeks yet. I'm sure Biscuit will think that we've provided him with new playground equipment when he sees the tree..........smile! As for a theme, I don't know that we have one, unless it's cats. Oh, sure, we've got a lot of different ornaments but the majority of them are cats. I still have one very special engraved one that I put on the tree each year for (Rainbow) Meggie but after searching high and low, and even contacting the company that originally made this ornament, I can't find one that I like to memorialize Squeegee and Holly. We go absolutely NUTS on lights. We have a 7 1/2 foot pre-lighted tree but to that, we add about another 1,000 lights. Gerry wraps them in and out on each, individual branch. practically all of my Hallmark Ornaments are animal themed......and most every ornament I have that isn't a round ball has some kind of animal, whether it's a dog or kitty or a wild animal....I love the "Snow Buddies" series in the Hallmark ornaments..they are little snowmen hugging or cuddling an animal...love this series because I love snowmen and having them along with an animal just makes them perfect!! I hope so, Kate. Every year...........I look. I'm on the Lenox email list and have searched other ornament sites thoroughly but can't find a thing. The ornament we have for Meggie was given to us by Punkie's ex-husband and he originally got it in Germany. It's gold and has a kitten perched on a gift and has been engraved with her name and the year she died. I cry every year when I place that ornament on the tree. I'm betting that you'll have a wonderful time with your dad on Thanksgiving, Kate. Just treasure him while you still have him. I still miss my dad more every day and it's been a really rough several days around here. We were at the mortuary last night for visitation for a good friend who had passed away. Today, my sister called with news that a friend of my parents' had died and we got an email that a retired Coastguardsman and former co-worker of Gerry's died last night. Too many............too close together. But I'm trying hard not to let it get to me. I'm still thinking that we just have so much compared to so many and lots and lots of reasons to be thankful. Even the gluttony of eating all that turkey is something others may only dream about. HI!!!!! Well, we were supposed to have my son and his family for Thanksgiving so that would have been 8 of us. Then we added my mom and brother....then my sister wasn't doing anything till the weekend (she has to spend today, Tues. and Wed. at Mayo) so we added her 5 and then my other sister opted for the day with us. So, we decided to split up the work and have it in the conferance room where Leon works. Good Lord, Denise, you're going to have one huge group of people for Thanksgiving. But really, that's what it's all about. Family and giving thanks. I think it's great that you have that conference room, complete with kitchen, to use. That will keep the mess out of your house and for some reason, it always seems easier to clean up a conference room or an area like that. But I have to say............you're doing the turkey, stuffing and ham? That's the majority of the work right there. With everyone else bringing side dishes, you make sure you let everyone else do the clean-up while you supervise and inspect. They're younger........let them do the "after" work and you rest. I am just about ready to get off my fat a$$ and go to the kitchen and start cooking. I did a lot of it yesterday so I could relax today for a change. But still got to get the turkey in the roaster and ham ready to go for later. Oh, just and FYI, I get a frozen turkey but put it in the fridge to thaw on Sunday and by today it is fine. Happy Tuesday!!! Another day where I've got the windows open already. It's cloudy and very windy but we never dropped below 63 last night. And this was after tying our record high yesterday of 79. I'll tell ya...........it was gorgeous!!! Sunny, windy and so very warm. By late this afternoon, that dratted cold front will come through, dropping us down to the mid 30's for tonight but tomorrow, we won't warm up above 40 or so. What a shock that will be!! We've gotten spoiled by fantastic weather and now it's time for reality and normal temps. I'm getting myself mentally geared up for Thanksgiving - - - - - I swear, I can already smell that turkey. Could I please ask for some prayers for my son's cat, Chicory? Chicory was a stray that I originally brought into the house.........after a trip to the vet, of course. He'd been hanging around the house for about 4 days and I finally got him into a carrier and off we went. Well, since shortly after Ken got married, Chicory has lived with Ken, since he's always preferred Ken over everyone else. But now he's got something neurological going on and is acting like he can't really feel or control his rear legs. According to our best guesstimate, Chicory is about 17 years old. Anyway, since Ken is cash short and bill long, I'm financing the trip to the vet today for him. But I'm really concerned. It will just about destroy Ken if he loses Chicory, since Chicory sleeps next to Ken's head and Ken falls asleep with Chicory washing his hand. Re-Re has been with Ken for over 10 years and they're so close. I'm so scared for both of them, so if you can spare some prayers and/or good thoughts, I'd sure appreciate it. Whoa!!! The *owner* of these dogs left them tied up at a place he had moved from and depended on someone else to feed and water them?? Don't you just want to string some people up and torture them? What a huge mess. And why, if he hasn't even bothered to name the poor dog, is he refusing to give you permission to have the dog neutered? Yep, you need a paper signed, clearly giving you ownership so he can't renig and take the dog back. "Dog" is at my vets being boarded. The guy from here got him away from the owner, don't know how or what the deal was but the dog is not tied outside in the cold anymore. It's so pretty outside. It's snowing and we still have beautiful leaves on the trees. So unusual, an unexpected gift. We seem to have a bumper crop of birdies this year. Yes, Denise, Ben is getting better but his sore, while drying up, has indeed grown as the vet said it would. YUCK. THe hole itself is about the size of a 50 cent piece but seems pretty dry. He is more himself though so he definitely feels better. My cards are not ready either, although I did get the design and a draft made. Just need to fine tune and print. YOu will all have to tellme what you think this year as so far, the people who reviewed for me said they were the best so far. Vickie, hope you and Danny are coping and doing ok. Kate, I think I am more like 1 1/2 to 2 hours from camp hill. But, I am more than willing to drive as far as I need too if you ever want to meet up. It would be fun! Sandy, you feeling ok? Hi, Ramona. I was wondering if you got snow yesterday...........and also today. Since you still have leaves on the trees, I hope you didn't have any problems with power outages. I remember one year when Travis was still a toddler and we got 8 inches of snow on October 8th. Way too early for us. Anyway, the trees were so bent over that Gerry went out with a broom and was beating the snow off the trees. We were busy from the minute I got home from work last night until it was time to go to bed (and even then, Rick turned in early..and off I went to the grocery store at 10:00!!!)
I used to see cards I liked after Christmas or even after I bought mine for the year....now I just quit looking!! **grin**

Thursday was Gerry's birthday but he didn't want a dinner or anything like that so we just did our usual Thursday grocery shopping, stopping for fast food on the way home. By Friday, I was just plain tired. My ankle has been acting up again and when I favor my ankle, my lower back lets me know about it. So, other than some cleaning and laundry, I was just trying to rest. Today, we went to one of our Express Care Clinics and got our flu shots taken care of.........no mess, no fuss, no pain. And they bill our insurance company, so I didn't even have to write a check. Then we were off for cat food at The Cat Association. We've had to put the kids back on Science Diet for the time being. Since I got tired of waiting, we got on line last night and checked several places, finally ordering from Pet Food Direct. Even with the shipping, the cost is about the same as driving out to the country and buying it at the Doggie Day Care place. And you can't beat having it delivered to your door. Denise, I'm glad to hear that Jazzpurr is doing okay. I hope the medications will take care of whatever is going on there. And I'm with you on the cards, although I usually don't have very many left over from year to year. But I write a family-type letter and then hand sign each card, adding a personal note if necessary. We worked outside today, it was kind of cold! I had my ears covered and that's something I don't normally do. Almost all the leaves got picked up and burned. Happy Hump Day!! After a warm and sunny day yesterday, today is chilly, windy and the sun keeps poking through the clouds. That's one of the things you have to love about fall..........the changing weather. I was just out for the mail and our oak tree is the most brilliant red and matches the neighbor's Bradford Pear in color. But it's been so windy the past several days that most of the other trees, and especially the maples, are now bare. Too soon for me in that we'll probably be seeing some snow long before I'm ready for it. I hate to tell you but we bought our Christmas cards last week. We were lucky to have a very quick night at pool. We were home by 10:30 (gasps of delight here) although our team as a whole didn't do very well. But I was having some back problems this morning so after making some phone calls that needed to be taken care of, I went back to bed for a while. Now it's time to get the cleaning done. Next weekend Rick will go to camp and I'll probably get them ready....I do go the "lazy way out now" though..I get them pre-printed and then I print off labels on the computer....I used to try to write little notes and self-address each envelope and self-sign them...then I went to having them printed but still writting notes and self-addressing them...now I'm down to sticking them in the envelopes, licking the back and sticking on the stamps and labels!! We are FINALLY getting some more rain...we've had a couple of nice rain storms the last couple of days, plus it's real over-cast so we aren't losing water to evaporation right now either...Thank heavens, and today, not that I'm "thrilled" to see snow we got some of the real wet/heavy stuff so that will also help our water situation.....

I had a cat that had a lump that burst. She had a huge clump of matted fur when I found her and this thing got started from the hair pulling. I didn't even know it wa there, was brushing her one day and it popped! YECH! Green, yellos, sometimes a bit bloody! If it's the neck area then I'd think it was from the neck biting that cats do. Poor Ben and poor you! Thankfully, I've never had to deal with an abscess but my sister's cat once had one and that was bad enough. I wouldn't think it would have anything to do with his bladder problems although if an abscess gets bad enough, the infection can spread elsewhere. I'm glad they've got him on good antibiotics and aren't charging you for his care but Ramona, don't feel badly about being grossed out by this. Please say a prayer for Jazpurr. His breathing isn't right again. (he stayed several days at the vet a few months ago). I really didn't want to take him to the vets cause no one is around full time on the weekends anyway so I called the vet and asked if I could start Lasix. So, he is feeling OK, just the breathing thing but I don't know if he will get worse over night! He has congestion....what ever that means....I asked that they keep him today for observation and went back at 4 and picked him up. They had given 2 Lasix shots and started antibiotics. I was worried he would get worse quickly and if he was there for awhile they would see what was happening. They didn't prescribe Lasix so need to call tomorrow and tale to the vet. When I was there to get him it was a madhouse! He peed on himself on the way home, poor guy! I had some cat wipes and cleaned him up, he wasn't too fond of that even though he is one that loves belly rubs! Thanks for your prayers. I'll just be keeping an eye on him! I don't know what is causing this. All I can think of is that's it an allergic reaction, maybe the stuff in the air from corn and bean harvest? When Bubs gets his cough I can relate it to something being done in the house creating dust or spring when the windows are open but I can't figure it out with Jazz. Poor guy is leary of me, scared I'll haul him away again but will come to me when I'm sitting down! He is so easy to pill! I'm thankful! You and me both, Crystal. This will be Biscuit's first Christmas and we're already sweating the tree thing. Other than wrapping the tree in barbed wire and attaching it to the ceiling, I don't know of any way to keep a determined cat out of and away from the tree. The year Emme was new to us, we got a small 4 ft. tree that we locked in the spare room at night. But last year, surprisingly, nobody seemed that interested in the tree. Since Gerry is much more "into" the tree than I am, I've told him for the past several years that once the tree is up, and for the entire time the tree is up, I expect him to get up 15 minutes earlier each and every morning (even before work) to re-decorate and re-string lights that the cats might have taken down during the night. My mornings are busy enough with trying to get coffee made, his breakfast ready and get the newspaper in and I refuse to add re-stringing the lights on the tree to that schedule.........LOL. Years ago I bought some ornaments that were bells. I hung them on the bottom branches and if someone went under the tree I would hear the bell and squirt them with water. It was working pretty good but I came home one day and someone had knocked them all off and eaten the cords that hung them . I've never had a huge problem. Mine like to lay under it before all the packages are there, they think I've laid the tree skirt down for THEM!!! I used plastic ornament hangers, no glass balls and no tinsel. I've had light cords chewed in the past so sprayed some bitter apple on and one taste told them this wasn't fun anymore! 'm so happy you found another furball to love! the one time I did have a lot of trouble was when Linus was still here....After three night of no sleep and seeing no reprieve in sight, I took care of the problem once-and-for-all...I took the tree down!!!! House looked a little bare with no tree...but it sure did save my sanity!!

Well, this is easy for me.............I get a real tree every year and one time, and only 1 time with 9 cats and 11 years did I have a cat in a trree. Years ago, I caught Roger in the tree flying out of it with the lights wrapped around him. THe tree never fell, only the lights got pulled off by Rog's body. Thats it. All 9 of them will sleep under the tree, or knock off some of the lower decorations but that is it. KNOCK ON WOOD KNOCK ON WOOD KNOCK ON WOOD I just know I should NEVER have said this! Not much going on around here. We're having a very restful holiday and trying to keep it calm and quiet. Gerry's cleaning up some of the filing and I've just been doing some cleaning. We went out yesterday for a while since our Cold Stone Cremery was giving away a dish of ice cream to all veterans. We'd never been there before and it was a really nice shop with great ice cream choices. But what was strange? Here it was........November 11th.......and we were able to sit outside and have our ice cream........no sweaters, no jackets, nothing. Yesterday was a very warm and humid 76 degrees. We ended up doing a bit of shopping on the way home, looking for a lettuce keeper, at BB&B, K Mart and Target. Neither of us can remember a time when we've been able to shop in mid-November at 6 p.m. at night with no coat or jacket. I'm figuring from Friday night until last night I was working on about 8 hours of sleep....still tired tonight.....

I've been rather busy myself today. I kept the car and went for my mammogram at 7:30 a.m. The clinic has one of the new digital machines and it doesn't hurt or ache nearly as much as it used to. And I actually got to see the *films* before I left. Really neat. Then I was off for a haircut and scalp massage with my hairdresser. I took the top of my windmill to a welding shop to get it fixed (darn thing can't stand up to Kansas wind) and then picked Gerry up at lunchtime for a meeting. He brought me home since, after his meeting, he needs to go out to the American Legion and get the bills, etc. and get that stuff taken care of. At 3:30, we take Cricket and Snowy to the vet. Cricket needs another depo shot and Snowy's basically just going along for the ride. I'm not getting any of them shots any longer but Snowy does need a checkup. And the clinic staff has been wanting to meet Cricket's brother. By that time, it's home for dinner and to collapse. I've got a hookin tomorrow but I don't think I'm going to go. Although I don't think I'm infectious any more after two weeks of this crud, I don't want to expose anyone to my hacking and blowing, if I don't have to. And missing one month won't hurt anything. One thing I've noticed today, though, while out running around. Our foliage is beautiful!!! The oak trees and about half of the Bradford Pears have turned a brilliant red and the maples are red and/or yellow. No infection for Ben, YEAH!! Just loaded with crystals that need to be disolved before they turn to the stones. So, I get to have fun and figure out how to feed him separately. Actually, the diet they gave me, Royal Canin SO is fine for all the cats to eat, even Roger as it dissolves both kinds of crystals (Ben has struvite Roger has oxolyte) and keeps bladders working perfect, but I can't afford for all 9 to eat it. 1 bag of dry and 1 case of wet cost $54.00. But it is nice to know that if one of the others gets it acidently, they won't get hurt by it at all. Oh, and I do not have spinal stenosis, I have 3 bulging disks. Got to get some therapy for that. I know the Royal Canin is expensive but it's better than surgery. Now you just have to figure out how to feed it to Ben and maybe Roger and not all the rest. He was not blocked, but his bladder was terribly full and so were his intestines! THey wanted to get a better reading on the urins so they sent it out and I am waiting for the results now. He definitely has crystals but also may have the stones. THe X-ray is not convincing though, because his ULTRA FULL intestines could be blcoking the bladder so they are going to wait a few days and X-ray again. So he is home, on anti spasmotics and anti inflamitories until the uurine comes back. They said that even plain bladder infections in cats could be so painful that the weird trance he was in was just him concentrating on the pain and not a seizure. So no surgery yet. I've got a question and would like some feedback. I'm getting kind of itchy to do some changes around here...........specifically, window coverings. The problem is, I am so NOT a fan of normal drapes, curtains, mini-blinds or vertical blinds. Example: for years, on my kitchen window (which only needs the bottom half covered for privacy purposes) I've used cute, quilted pillow shams clipped to curtain rings and hung from a pole. In the living room and bedroom, I've used cute quilts clipped (again) to drapery rings. It works great for privacy and also light and climate control. I'm thinking about doing something different in the living room and our bedroom - - - - - - but I don't know what!! I do watch a lot of HGTV (Designed to Sell, Design on a Dime, etc.) for ideas but was wondering what everyone here uses for their windows ......... and I hate the term "window fashions." In a perfect world, I'd live in the country and would be able to have my windows bare. Yup, buck naked. I love, and live with, the country look. But an example of what I DON'T want is: several years ago, I was in a house that was in a rural area. The house sat far enough "up" from the road that someone passing by would not be able to see in. And what did these people have in their windows!!! ???? Very, VERY heavy draperies that were snagged from their cats and, if truth be told, made their living room and dining room look like a mortuary!! Uh, we're still alive and well here. I'm not a window covering fan either. On our sunporch I put wood blinds cause I can shove them way up but close them at night. It's 8 windows and I didn't want drapes. My dining room has the same thing with a topper, it's a southern exposure so I had to have something that blocked the sun well in the summer. My living room is a bow window but I only have a valance. We have so little traffic and I don't tend to run around naked so...I have tried covering that window and just hate the light it blocks. I have curtains in my bedroom but the spare room is a valance and shade (It's Goldies room and she lives in the window and I don't need to clean hairy curtains. I'm lazier now ! I've lived in places where I've done what you have, the curtain rings clipped to something other than curtains. I found cloth napkins once that matched placemats and used them for a valance. Heck, Denise, we've even thought about the wood or faux wood blinds. The problem is that our living room and bedroom windows are doubles. To get that width is horribly expensive and also heavy. I've been using the quilts and shams because they were pretty, fairly inexpensive and very easy to toss in the washer when the edges became cathairlogged from the kitties poking their faces around the edges. Crystal, I'd love to see your pictures. There's a house in our neighborhood that has shutters on the lower half of the windows only, like you, but they have a valance. To me, in my house, at least, that's just another term for a dust-catcher. I love to have the windows open and the whole house fan on but it does tend to make things a bit dusty. I've given shutters a good deal of thought because they're pretty much indestructible with cats. Sorry, I'm not much help here. I HAVE to have window coverings, and they have to be dog and cat proof. We have vertical blinds.... I don't like them, but they are the most practical and not prone to as much damage as other stuff. The cats would climb/destroy curtains.... and I already know they will destroy horizontal blinds. Dad has shown some slight improvement. He was removed from the ventilator today and is breathing on his own, altho with some difficulty. Mom has elected to just do supportive care..... IF he hangs on and makes it out of the hospital, he will more than likely be put in a nursing home. It's really just a matter of time.... He has stage 4 lymphoma, blood-sugar values fluxuating to over 600, advanced kidney failure and not strong enough for dialysis, needs open-heart surgery and not strong enough for that either. I think Ben is blocked again. I had an appointment for him tonight anyway because I could tell he had an infection, but now he seems blocked. Got little pee drops all over the house which makes me think he isn't completely blocked yet, but he is acting very lethargic and in pain. So, I got an hour before the vet opens. Darn! I still think this is a food related problem for some males. All the male cats I had before the ones I have now had this problem and Bubs was prone too, infection after infection but when I changed foods not one has had an infection in 10 years. One of mine had that surgery before it was a common surgery. After Rogers ordeal I am scared for Ben since Rogers really didn't stop the problem completely. I don't know...........call me crazy or whatever, but I've always been interested in phones. Even when we had our land line, I was the one in charge of what kind of phone we had (cordless or corded, 2/4 ghz or 5.8 ghz and which brand). And now that we're totally cellular (I don't know why we waited so long), I'm still the one who takes care of our online accounts with Verizon, picking out the phones (subject to Gerry's approval......on HIS phone only!) and whatever. We bought our flat screen for the living room about 2 years ago. I had pretty much made up my mind what I wanted but once we got to Sears, I left the final, actual decision to Gerry to choose between the Sony and the Sharp Aquos. I was leaning to the Sharp and that's what we came home with. As for the computer, awww, well, that's totally Gerry. Since he's an IT and knows more about computers than a whole bunch of people could ever hope to know, I let him do what he wants. He may ask my opinion on something but I pretty much bow to him............LOL. Most other household decisions, I think, are made by me but I definitely want Gerry's opinion. And the cats??? Just saying hello for the week! Heading to chiro this morning, found a new one that also does accupuncture. I have to stop at vets for wormer, gotta worm all 13 cats! YIKES! Noticed tapeworm segments on Dolly and Bubbs! Yech! We DID have some fleas this year, not an infestation but guess some of the cats thought they should eat a flea or 2! Darn cats! Noticed a worm on Micah's rear too, round worm so getting emds for her too. I understand her cause she is outdoors all the time but she will be easy to treat...not the cats though! They have a new topical but it's gonna cost me 230.00! Better than pilling I guess and some won't eat canned food so can't use the powder. Yes, Micah is the rescued Huskie. Well, pilling the cats didn't work. I got one pill in 2 cats and both needed another half pill but were foaming at the mouth and clawing me so I took the pills back and got the topical! That's what I get to do this morning! Hi, All: Please forgive me for not being here in weeks and weeks, but I just wanted to let you all know that we have two new kittens! We got them from a lady who's been rescuing kittens for 12 years! Karma had this cold, too, and so did *all* the kitties in her kitten room, but she is over it and racing around the house to beat the band. She's still *terribly* thin, though, and every time we go in the kitchen she runs in and cries for food, even though she has some fresh food in the family room where they're staying on their heating pad. Hi, Raylene: Thank you! They ate a little bit of cooked chicken today, too, besides their canned kitty food. Carma just climbs up my clothes while I'm cooking to see if she can leap onto the counter. I have to watch her like a hawk. I don't want her jumping onto the stove!!! It's fun to have little toys on the floor that they are playing with. We've had a steady stream of friends and neighbors coming to see the kitties, too! I'll post more photos again after they're a little bit bigger. Oh my, they are too precious and cute! What a dear you are for saving them! I have had some itsy bitsy sickly babies myself, but with lots of love and attention, they all got better. As will your two new ones. Since they are kitties and you should keep food out at all times.. Kittens, especially sickly ones, need to eat a lot and often. You can experiment with different brands. I would also feed as much canned as you can get in them. THe kitten formula though. That will get them eating, and canned is better for kittens that need to gain weight. Mine enjoy a bit of tuina every now and then, but I might wait until they are bigger and healthier because tuna holds no nutritional value for cats at all. I use tuna as a special treat. On the other hand, if you can't get enough weight on Carma soon enough, I'd go ahead and feed her whatever she will eat for now. Just don't make it more than 10% of her regular diet. Hi, Ramona: Thank you for all the info. I know I'll stop worrying about them as soon as they're feeling better. I didn't know there was a vaccine against upper respiratory tract infections in cats, but I just learned about it. I guess with strays and shelter cats, it just spreads while they're really tiny. Jesse, our 65 lb. Aussie, didn't look so big to me until we brought home the tiny kitties - now he looks ENORMOUS! Brock was rubbing his face all over Jesse's face yesterday. I wish I'd had a camera to catch Jesse's expression. My other cat, Jumbalaya, years ago used to do that to my German Shepherd and they'd sleep together cuddled up. We had a wonderful time last night. Ended up getting about 50 kids at the door and yes, we tried very hard not to hack, sneeze, blow or just plain germ away the kids. Most of them were so cute in their costumes. And the weather was perfect for Halloween..........chilly, windy but clear! Today, it's back to normal but it's sunny out and I think we had our first killing freeze. We'll have to wait and see on that but the water in my front birdbath was frozen this morning and that's actually the measure I use to gauge the temp - - - more so than an actual thermometer. LOLOLOL. I just tested our alarm system on the house. This is actually the first time I've tested it since we had the new "Prime Cell" system installed (this one uses cell technology so you don't have to have a land line). I called Protection One and had them walk me through a test and it was so funny.............the minute the siren started to wail, all 6 cats went scrabbling for cover, leaving claw marks on the floor. Actually, should the alarm go off, it automatically calls a "Call Center," and they call to make sure the call is legit. Then they call the police or fire department, depending on what's going off here at home. There IS a panic code on the panel that goes immediately to the police department with no call center intervention first. We had our first alarm system installed in '94, when the couple next door separated after he got involved in drugs. I'll tell ya, that was scary. I ended up skulking around at night, getting license plate numbers and that kind of stuff, for the police but it still took two years to get him out of here. Hi all! Nothing much going on here. My back is out so I dopn't do too much. On a lot of pain killers and muscle relaxers and can't sit here too long. Have to get an MRI tuesday to see what is going on with my bones. Luckily, the pain meds work very well. They just don't help me bend. You know how hard it is to do things when you can't bend from the waist? I can't even pee properly for crying out loud. Can someone tell me how to lose 100 pounds quick? My sister is getting a lap band in January but my insurance won't pay for it. I want to go see the BODIES exhibit on sunday so I am hoping my back is better by then. Take care all!! Still feeling one step "below" roadkill. This is one nasty cold and of course, it's gone into bronchitis. The Mucinex helps but more than anything, I just want to rest. Sorry I haven't been around for a couple of days. Last Tuesday night, one of our other female players came to pool with a cold and brought her ex-husband with her, who she's dating again. The pressure in my sinuses is terrible and I'm coughing and sniffling like crazy. I'm just hoping it doesn't go into bronchitis. So I don't know how much I'll be around...........I'll try, but I can't promise anything. I just want to go to bed.......and that's not all the cold's fault either. This is the Lyrica, Kate, that's originally for diabetic neuropathy but they found that it works for the all-over pain of fibromyalgia too. Unfortunately, for me, it's done nothing for my pain but has sure made my life intolerable by making me so tired, all I can do is sleep. To give it a fair trial, I'll finish the 13 pills I have left but then, that's it. No more. I'll be calling the rheumatologist next week and let him know that it's not working. Posting real quick cuz I am BEYOND EXHAUSTED! Didn't have to be to work till 7:00 this morning, but we had some people come in as I was getting ready to close with an emg. boarding need for their dog, so I stayed and did their paperwork and stuff. Didn't get out of there till almost 7. That's 2 12-hour days filled with scrubbing floors and mats, pottying doggies and cleaning up after them, etc. Basically the same thing I do at home... but then I have to come home after 12 hours and do it all here too! My legs and feet are KILLING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gilly Bean took a bad fall today too. I was holding her in one arm and holding the phone with the other. Goose and the other dog I had running around in the office with me started barking, so I stood up to see over the 4.5 foot-tall counter to see if somebody was coming in. Gilly leapt out of my arms to stand on the counter, only she slid all the way across the counter and fell to the ceramic tile floor. She started screaming... I about had a heart attack. I joined an online group for people displaced by the fire so I can keep on top of things for Rachel. So many sad stories of people not allowed back up the mountain (were at work when the evac notices came out) to rescue pets or get belongings. Animal Control is doing what they can... but so many lost their homes AND pets. More than 2 of the fires have been arson. They've caught one guy, killed another guy, and one got away.... but all those little fires were put out, thankfully. There are multiple reports of looting, and they suspect a lot of the smaller fires are arson related... tho very hard to prove at this point. I've had something similar like that happen with the cats. We have my grandparents antique library table in front of our double living room windows and to protect the top from kitty claws, we found a doggie crate mat that fits perfectly. The cats love it because it's so soft and fuzzy. Anyway, they've been known to jump up on the library table at a full run and slide the mat (even though it's got a non-skid backing) right off the table and onto the floor.......with them on it!!! I've been glued to the fires for 2 days. I had a good friend in Encinitas get evacuated, and my really good friend (Goose's breeder, Rachel) was evacuated from Lake Arrowhead. I am trying to keep her posted on the her area/home. Her house is stuck between the Grass Valley Fire and the Slide Fire. The GVFire is moving away from her, thank goodness, but now the Slide/Running Springs fire is heading right for her. She and her hubby, 6 Danes, a chi, 6 cats and their mini horse are safe in Riverside, thank GOD. I have to be at work at 6:30 a.m. tomorrow.... but hopefully things will be slow enough I can check on the status of the fires for her.

Ramona, I'm so sorry to hear this and it must have been hard to take this news. But at least now you have some idea of what you're dealing with. Did your doctors talk with you about anything else you can do to help head off the knee replacement? Since knee (and hip) replacements only last for about 10-15 years, you want to put it off as long as possible unless the pain is to the point that you can't handle it. My one aunt on my mother's side has spinal stenosis quite severely and she's now doing the epidural thing to help keep her comfortable. But I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. My knee isn't so bad yet. I can walk just fine, it's stairs I can't do, and bending it too far to sit hurts, but no biggie. I take celebrex and Glucosomine now and of course, I was told to lose 100 pounds. And I think if I have that other spinal thing, it would be very early. My sister Connie just had her left knee replaced about a month ago. She was supposed to have the right knee done but has canceled it as she isn't ready. She is 55 and has been messing around with bad knees for several years and they didn't want to do it till it was really bad cause of her age but.....she is hoping to be able to garden and golf without pain and paying for it for days this next year! What a beautiful weekend!! On Saturday, we made it to 84 but the humidity and dew point were so low, it didn't feel anywhere near that warm. And since it was the second and last weekend of the Parade of Homes, we drove out to see the only other home I was interested in touring. It was a custom build home and the new owners had already moved in, yet they opened their doors to hundreds of people. The house was very different and I ended up getting dizzy on the stairs and then again in the hallway on the second floor. Those were built with industrial metal grating to allow the heat from the sunroom (which included a sauna and a hot tub) to rise and heat the upstairs. It was a weird feeling to be walking down a hallway where you can see through to the kitchen and sunroom below. And on the way back home, we stopped at Lake Shawnee and toured the new Botanical Gardens that have been put in this year. So very beautiful with all of the color and it gives me all kinds of ideas for new flowers for new spring. Considering the day was so warm, windy and nice, there were very few people at the lake and only a couple of boats in the water. But it was great to walk the paths, sit on the benches and watch the ducks, geese and sea gulls. The lake was really choppy because of the wind but it made walking the gardens just about perfect. Yesterday wasn't nearly as warm and the sun played hide and seek most of the day. But about mid-afternoon, the cold front came through and we dropped from 73 down to 60. We even picked up another inch of rain last night, meaning that over the past 9 days, we gotten 6 inches. We're still so green here but today is chilly (about 54) and very gray. Ken and Jackie had driven to Omaha one day last week to go to the zoo and he said that the trees in Omaha are almost bare, where our trees are still green and still holding on to their leaves. I just checked the bridge cam in Maine, since Gerry's mom said yesterday that they were just passing peak color. It's gorgeously sunny, 77 degrees and I can tell that some of the red is now missing from the trees. Our builders and realtors do this every spring and fall. They pick the examples of the homes they want to showcase and then they have them open to the public for two weekends. Most of the homes these days are *huge* and range in price from the mid $200,000 to almost $500,000. I've never quite understood why anyone needs that much room (formal living, formal dining, library, hearth room, family room, eat in kitchen, full finished basement 4-5 bedrooms, at least 3 full baths and now, we've graduated to 3 car garages as normal) but also, where are they getting the money? Thanks to the 5 inches plus we got this week, we're over for the month and the year and it's so green outside, you'd think it's May and not October. Someone is coming for dinner. Got a call this morning about a kitten. (thank you so much to the woman at the local vets office for saying "call Denise") A cat stray cat had kittens under her deck. Mama was moving them this past weekend and left one behind! With all the cold wet weather they had to bring it in but need a home for it. I said they could bring it here tonight. I will see how it's doing, they guess it to be 4-5 weeks old, it's lapping some food and eating a bit of kibble but I want to make sure it's old enough to home. Called my vet and they will take it, they have a large cage they put in the lobby, and find it a home. I know I'm gonna want to keep it so pray for me!!! (and Leon!
