Kate, I'm glad you popped in and gave an explanation........not that you owe us one. But I was getting concerned about your absence and was almost ready to send you an email or try to call --- just to make sure everything was okay. I'm glad your fine but it sure sounds like you don't know whether you're coming or going. You are one busy gal. One question though! Do you get paid as the regular receptionist or will you just get paid as the receptionist mentor? I haven't been here much myself. Been spending more time on another board I go to. One of the women there lost her daughter this week. The daughter was 38 with two small boys. She had a seizure and fell backwards into their swimming pool. Her little boys pulled her to the side but couldn't get her out so the older boy called their father and the father called his parents, who only live a couple of blocks away. By the time the grandparents and the EMT's arrived, she wasn't breathing and could not be revived. So what had started as a wonderful week for this women (she was at a rug hooking camp and had just celebrated her 49th anniversary with her hubby) turned into a complete nightmare. Just goes to show you, I guess, that when you least expect it, life throws you a curve ball and your life turns to crap. (NT) -- Sandy, 7:43:55 am, Sat, 06/02/07

Boy, I'm glad it's Friday! Nothing much and nothing bad going on around here but I'm just looking forward to the weekend. We had some heavy storms last night and lots of rain, losing power about 1 a.m. I never noticed until I got into the kitchen and both the microwave and stove were blinking. But we're expecting more severe storms this afternoon and evening with lots of heavy rain. Right now, we don't need it. We were over 7 inches plus for May and we're still in flood watches. Oh, well. I just wish we could get some of this in July or August when it's usually so dry. I'm hoping everybody has a good weekend and........is anyone doing something good?? It's been a sad and stressful week here. One of my friend's neighbor kid went into their back yard and left the gate open. Both her Danes got out, and one got hit by a truck and killed. She was only 11 months old too.. just a baby. Another friend has had a very very sick Dane.... emg. vet visits and 3 very sleepless days/nights now. They aren't sure what's wrong, but are concerned with both a possible bowel blockage and heart issues... My phone has been ringing off the hook this week and I've been consoling and trying to offer support. Say a prayer for Maggy (Dane pup who was killed) and Tazzy (sick Dane) please! *SIGH* I love Danny to pieces, and he's a great man, but he sure can't seem to think ahead! He's been working on my Nissan off and on for a year and a half now. It's been a giant "paperweight" in the driveway... He has finally given up on figuring out what's wrong, and arranged for yesterday off to get it to a friend of his who owns his own auto shop. Well.... he failed to call his friend and tell him he was bringing it in tho, and they guy didn't have room on his lot for my vehicle. We are taking it in Thursday or Friday now... Oh well, at least Danny cleaned all his junk out of it and washed it for me! He's been using my truck to store crap from his Explorer. *rolling eye smilie goes here* LOL I've been driving my Dad's Chevy Silverado 4WD, which I love, but it's a gas hog, and with gas prices.... I want my Nissan back!!!! Keep your fingers crossed it doesn't cost too much to fix! My fear is as soon as I fork out the repair money, I'll have some other $$$ emergency! Men! (Bigger sigh) I understand where you're coming from. It *would* seem logical to call the friend in advance and make sure he has the time and the room for your Nissan. But then again, maybe he could have taken it in about 18 months ago?? At least it's clean now. And I also empathize with your not wanting to drive the Silverado. Talk about a gas guzzler!! My youngest sister has been running between Houston and Columbia, South Carolina for months now (making arrangements to move her MIL) and I can only imagine what the gas is costing her since she drives a GMC Yukon. Happy Sunday, everyone! I guess you're all out enjoying the holiday weekend because there sure isn't anyone here. For us, it's been fairly quiet. The weather is cool and showery and other than yardwork, which Gerry did Friday evening, there's not much going on around here. I was thinking about some kind of a picnic for tomorrow but again, we're supposed to have scattered thunderstorms and it's not a good idea to be out at the lake if that happens. I do have a cute story about Friday. As Gerry was mowing the lawn, he was going over the area we had reseeded where our weeping willow used to be. As he went over this area, two *things* shot out from under the mower. He stopped and then called me outside to look at two of the cutest little bunnies you'd ever want to see. We scooted them up into a flower bed and Gerry started the mower back up again. On the next pass, 3 more baby bunnies came flying out. We found the warren in the grass that Momma Bunnie had dug. I called Punkie and Travis to come over and look at the bunnies and when she got here, she called a co-worker of hers who does wildlife rescue. (NT) -- Sandy, 10:24:55 am, Sun, 05/27/07
Her co-worker said to scoop each bunnie up, using gloves, and put them back in the warren when we were done mowing. It turned out to be quite comical with the 3 of us trying to catch those bunnies. We got them all back in the warren and loosely covered the opening with grass. Momma Bunnie was out Friday night in the yard, driving the cats crazy, but I need to go out and try to check the warren today. What an interesting story, Sandy! *Do* keep us posted on how all the bunnies and the Momma Bunny are doing. That's truly *amazing* that you were able to catch them all. I used to raise angora rabbits and spin/knit their wool. Rabbits are such *sweet*, endearing animals. It was so relaxing to comb them and help keep them groomed so they wouldn't get hairballs. Bunny Update..........we were both worried because we haven't seen Momma Bunny for a couple of days. But Gerry was just outside cleaning and filling the birdbaths. The stream of water from the hose hit the ground where the warren is located and he said one of the bunnies popped out and then went right back into the warren. So at least the babies are still there. And he said they've grown quite a bit in the past two days. I'll have to make more of an effort to watch for the mother bunny today and especially tonight. Uh-oh! Sounds to me like the dogs are behaving like babies who have their days and nights mixed up. Or maybe they're just really smart and know that it's better to play at night when it's cooler. Nope! Not surviving at all! I've got 8 puncture wounds on my right hand and my hand's swelling. Not good. I called the vet yesterday after we spent 45 minutes trying to get the cats pilled. I was in tears and Gerry was livid --- not with me but with the cats. I said that either we do this by injection here at home or we'd bring the cats in for boarding for the time that they need medication and the vet techs can deal with it. The end result? Another almost $100 and now we're doing the medication by transdermal gel on the ear flap. Much, MUCH easier and less stressful.......on me and the cats. (NT) -- Sandy, 6:14:44 am, Tue, 05/22/07
I don't blame you one bit for getting the transdermal gel...I have to say that until I saw below where Ramona mentioned it I've never heard of a gel that you put on their ears. I don't know how many medications you can get in this form but I'll let you in on one secret..........it's not cheap. Any medication like this has to be made up by a compounding pharmacy. Yeah, I'll say. $134.00 for one of Missy's anitbiotic. But it is a double dose so normally wouldn't be so much. Some drugs can't be made that way. Just depends on make up. We figured that poor Missy has had enough of pills rammed down her throat for 2 years, we decided to give her a break with the ear gel. Plus, her steroid (SANDY - listen up) is given as a liquid, beef flavored and she likes that one. Thats only $25 a month. But, our Missy really needed the break, so it is worth it for her. Ug..... well, glad you found the transdermal gel. Those forceps I posted about have blunt ends, which is why I use those over a pair of tweezers. I've never hurt any of my kitties with them, and I have some real PITAs to pill! Hope everyone is well very soon!!!! < br>As for cost, I get a lot of my dog/cat medications online or in Mexico..... No, Kate. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. The article started with Wiscasset, Maine and the lobster roll. But just about any article about Maine includes a picture of *my* lighthouse, Bass Harbor Head Light. That's the lighthouse where we lived for two years. And the picture was beautiful. Oh Sandy, what a fun job for you... NOT! I know what it's like having to pill multiple cats... NOT FUN! I ended up getting a pair of forceps.... Hold kitty's head in my hand and apply pressure at the jaw joint... when they open, use the forceps to put the pill at the back of their throat... Saves me from getting bit! I got mine at Drs. Vicki, I looked at the forceps and thought that was a wonderful idea..........EXCEPT that Emme (as tiny as she is) can really thrash her head around, even with me holding it. I'd be afraid that I'd poke a hole in her mouth or her throat. But after this mornings round of pilling, I'm sporting two new puncture holes in my fingers, along with a whole slew of scratches on my forearm, so we had to try something different. So Gerry wrapped her up tightly in an old towel, with only her little head sticking out. I pried her jaws open on the sides and put one finger on her lower, front lip to keep her mouth open, and dropped the pill in, pushing it down her throat. THIS time, it worked!! She actually swallowed it. But she was making horrible, angry noises by the time we were done. For someone so little, she fights worse than the bigger cats and she was so incredibly p*ssed. Oh gosh, sounds like fun! Thought-lots of med can be made into transdermal gels now. THey are lotion you rub onto their ear tips. Missy gets her antibiotics that way. Much easier than a pill. Thanks, Ramona. We were actually given the option of the transdermal gel on Cricket's steroid but he's really very easy to pill. Unfortunately, the prednisolone pills don't work very well for him. I watch his mouth like a hawk to make sure we get him in to the vet on a timely basis for a depo-medrol shot. And I'm getting some other ideas for medication from the stomatitis board that Denise referred me to. I can tell you, though, that my hands are really, really bad this week and trying to grasp that little 1/2 pill and get it into their mouths and down their throats isn't really easy for me. Oh sweetheart, I feel for you. We see so many cases of giardia at work. Mainly the new little puppies that owner's bring in. And I'm sure your vet warned you that you can also get giardia from them. So just be careful and wash your hands alot. So glad Gerry was able to get a sample in. This particular parasite can take several doses to get rid of. Thanks, Raylene. I really, really appreciate your coming here and weighing in on this one. Actually, I checked their medication immediately on several medical websites and I'm aware that it's passable to humans. Thankfully, neither one of us has any symptoms and neither do any of the other cats. We just can't figure out where Snowy picked this up since I'm obsessed about cleanliness where the cats are concerned. (litter boxes are pristine, bowls are changed and washed twice a day in the dishwasher, etc.) They never go outside, unless you count going to the vet in the carrier. Even our vet was stumped. I hope one round of Flagyl takes care of this and we'll be sure to get that second stool sample and have Snowy rechecked after the first round of antibiotics are done. Thank you again. Had a nice visit with my sister, Debra, yesterday. She was on her way thru town heading to a conference in California (She lives in Tucson.) We had lunch together and a nice visit. She's coming back on Saturday and spending the night.

Please say a prayer for Stitch, a beautiful German Shepherd, who was in some kind of accident and had his tail ripped off while my friend was out running errands. We aren't sure what happened. Oh, VikiKat - I had so much fun watching your video! Seeing your Danes reminds me of a story. When I worked years ago at a kennel at a veterinary clinic, there was a Great Dane boarding there. When I came home from work, I told my son (who had never seen a Great Dane) that there was a dog as big as a pony at the kennel! He didn't believe me. So after dinner we went back again to visit the night shift and see "Moose." When my son saw him, his eyes got big as saucers and Moose let out a loud "Woof." When we got home, my son said, "Dad! There's a dog as big as our kitchen there and when he barks, it sounds like thunder!!!" So true! Also, would it be all right if I painted minis of your kitties that you posted? I'm so sorry I haven't been here much the past week...between my regular job and WW I've been pretty busy...and it looks like this week will be more of the same. I worked my WW meeting last night, I'm leaving shortly to work the morning session today, then I work the evening one tonight, the evening one tomorrow night and then my "regular" one on Thursday evening!! So, by the time I get home, get supper and the dishes done I'm done in too!!!

Pool is *finally* over. Our team ended up losing Thursday night (I didn't play) so tournament week is done. But between our regular payback and tournament winnings, we split just under $400, which isn't too bad. It's nice to have "play" money in my wallet. And what can you say about the best husband in the world? He took Friday as a vacation day so I could sleep in and get some rest. Unfortunately, I'm still paying dearly for 3 nights of pool and not enough rest, but I knew that would happen. Unlike my doctor's orders, I've never learned to pace myself and take those breaks when I need them. But when it comes to tournament time, I know there's no rest and I'm going to end up hurting. This weekend will be quiet, though, and because of Mother's Day, I don't have to cook. It's strange because I haven't made a real meal here at home since last Monday night. Right now, it's hard to think ahead and realize that we won't be playing pool again until either the end of August or September. Sorry for not being around this week. I'm just taking a quick break right now after folding a load of towels. We're coming up on Night #3 of pool and I'm so tired, my eyes feel like they've got gravel in them. We lost our first night (Tuesday) so now we're playing on the loser's bracket but there's still a lot of money involved. Our team won last night in 3 straight (happy dancing!) so it's back to Terry's this afternoon. But like I said, we're tired and I hurt all over. Nothing's helping the pain right now and the lack of sleep just adds to it. I don't know how other people play pool night after night and still get up in the morning. I've been worried since Tuesday about doing dishes. When my hands get this bad, I can't hang on to things and working with slippery dishes can be a recipe for disaster. I don't want to break a glass or plate. But there IS a bright note.......one of the women who used to work as a waitress at Terry's brought in her new puppy last night for us to see.........a darling miniature dachshund named Harley for us to ooohh and aahhh over. He's adorable and so soft and cuddly. Too bad we'd have a major revolt on our hands if we tried to bring something like that home!!! Joey would have a fit. Not much sleep for me last night. It literally poured all night long and we got lots of lightning and thunder with it. Our rain gauge said 3 1/2 inches and it's still pouring this morning. Thankfully, no tornadoes for us........YET. But we have lots of flooding and TWC just issued another tornado warning for just west and south of Wichita. I'm sooo tired of this weather pattern and the forecast for the coming week is severe thunderstorms each and every day for the entire week. Topeka was one of the lead stories on GMA today.......such massive flooding!! We got over 10 inches of rain in less than 48 hours and that was preceded by a wet week last week. Water rescues started yesterday morning at 1 a.m. as the streets and homes flooded. All of our school districts cancelled school yesterday because of the flooded streets. We were sooo lucky. We had one small area of seepage on one seam in the basement but my neighbors had flooded basements. They're going to have to rip out the bottom portion of their drywall and the muddy water ruined their berber carpeting. This neighbor is the new news and weather director for one of our TV stations and he got called out at 2 a.m. yesterday morning when the scope of the flooding was discovered. His wife was home alone with 4 small kids when the basement started to fill with water. The pictures on the news are just horrible. Sam Champion from GMA is in town this morning, broadcasting from the banks of one of the rivers, and even TWC has been showing local pictures, along with the updates from Greensburg. Busy, busy week. Even though Gerry warned me not to overdo it yesterday, I did. My day started with a doctor's appointment at 8:45 and I ran from there. Before dinner even rolled around, I crashed and burned. To top it all off, when I get that tired, instead of sleeping well, I had a terrible night. Gerry said that I woke him up twice......once by screaming and a second time by laughing. Tonight's the last night of our regular pool session and all we do tonight is play for fun and collect our winnings. I think Gerry said that it works out to about $40 per player, since we have 7 on our team right now. But next week is tournament week.........we start playing on Tuesday night and play all week until we get knocked out of the winner's bracket.......and then the loser's bracket. No rest, no sleep and more pool than I could ever want or need. Yesterday was downright warm and sticky so we turned the a/c on in the afternoon. It was supposed to be cooler today......NOT. Happy, Happy Friday!! This past week has been the week from hell! Lots of running to do, Gerry's had lots of meetings and we went to our first Fibromyalgia support meeting held at the hospital where I went for my physical therapy. The meeting was informative and I even met up with two of the women that I'd had pool therapy with. SO.........what are your plans for this weekend? Is anyone going to do anything good? We've got yard work planned, since the rain's supposed to stop later and clear up. Tomorrow's temp should be in the mid 70's and by Sunday, we'll be at 80. We only had one errand on our list but I think Kenny will incorporate our errand into his. That would be nice. Other than that, we're taking Cricket back to the vet this evening. Giving him the prenisolone tablets isn't doing the trick and he needs another depo-medrol shot. Poor guy. I feel for him. But here's hoping everybody has a great weekend. As for the meetings, it's something new and this was the first one. Don't know if they'll be held every month, every 3 months or, somone talked about every 2 weeks. Denise found a message board for me that's stomatitis related. What little time I've had, I've been trying to read the archives and get a feel for the different treatments. Haven't posted yet but plan to because we can't keep Cricket on these depo-medrol shots indefinitely. So I'm going to need some help and feedback from the people on this message board to find different treatments and see if we can get his mouth under control. He doesn't appear to be in any pain, per se, but when his mouth starts to get bad, he vomits up everything he eats. And it wears me out trying to keep the piles cleaned up and the laundry done......if I'm unlucky enough for him to puke on furniture or bedding. To say nothing of the fact that he's getting little to no nutrition if he's vomiting up everything he eats. Thank you for asking. I hope you get through today without too much stress and sorrow. Good morning gals! Sorry to be AWOL but I had my little procedure on Monday and haven't felt too good since. NO MORE PERIODS FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YIPEE SKIPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!! No, not a hysterectomy, but an endometrial ablation. They burn the inside of your uterus (after a D&C) to klill all the endometrial tissue. Now I don't have to worry about getting preggers (haha, like I'd have to anyway) and hopefully, this will also end those monthly visits. Went well, just some cramping. Although I don't really know how old you are, Vicki, I certainly think you're old enough to know if you want kids or not. I've known women who have known since their teen years that they didn't want kids. But why should a doctor *think* they can basically tell you that you're too young to make a decision like that?? My one doctor wouldn't let me get my tubes tied because he felt that I was too young (at 30) to make that decision. Happy Tuesday. Woke up to mostly cloudy skies but it made for a spectacular sunrise. We're expecting supercell thunderstorms later today along with all of the companions............hail (our weatherman has said the hail could reach grapefruit size), torrential downpours and, of course, tornadoes. I had expected to wake up to rain but it was all to the north of us, pounding Nebraska. It will be a very interesting evening, to say nothing of the fact that we have pool tonight. Oh, joy. All of this is on top of the fact that I had one of my worst nights ever. I didn't think I overdid it yesterday at all but my hip, ankle and hands hurt so much that I just could not sleep, even with the pain meds. So I'm tired. And I'm not in any mood to be dealing with supercells and wall clouds. The past week's weather, though, has been super. Very warm and sunny with low humidity. our weather today was beautiful and actually yesterday it was too, for awhile...then a storm blew in. The wind was really strong and grabbed our flag and wrapped it around the Eagle Finial and then took the pole and almost bent it completely in half. I couldn't undo it by myself and Rick wasn't home...so now our Flag as a small tear and the pole has a large bend in it....so we got on the internet and ordered a new pole last night, and hopefully this one is a better one..it's supposed to be stronger.... I couldn't believe it, I ordered the new one on Monday night..and it arrived today!!! Happy Saturday, everybody!! What a gorgeous day. We have total and complete sunshine and we're right at 80 degrees right now. Gerry's already mowed the lawn and is taking a few of the low hanging branches off of the trees so he doesn't have to duck quite so much when he mows. The house is clean, the laundry's going and I'm headed outside to clean up the flower beds. Oh, and we took a quick trip this morning to Dog Day Afternoon, which is a doggie day care place not too far from us but yet, out in the country. We got a small bag of the Natura Evo food to try with the cats and...........they LOVE it. We have about 2 days worth of Natural Balance dry food to finish up and then - that's it. We also managed to pick up a pamphlet on the Evo food and Natura line. Short of doing the "feeding raw" diet and making it myself, I truly think that this is just about the best we can do as far as food for the cats. For whatever reason, I just can't quite envision myself grinding up raw meat and the organs, to say nothing of buying the supplements, and doing it all myself. We tried the Raw diet with Goose. His breeder has been feeding her dogs raw for over 6 years, but she belongs to a co-op, and can get cheap meat. It was costing me a FORTUNE to get meat for just one dog! Most raw feeders say all the supplements are not necessary... but it may be different for cats, as their requirements are different. Evo is a fantastic food. I feed my chis the Evo dog food along with the Canidae. I can't get the Evo cat here tho. We are switching to Felidae for the cats. I remember several years ago, there was a recall on Ball Park hotdogs. As we were doing our normal weekly shopping at Walmart, I deliberately checked the franks in the case and sure 'nuf, there were the Ballpark hotdogs with the recall number, still out for sale. I complained to the manager but apparently, it wasn't until a week later, when another woman STILL found the hotdogs out for sale that she called one of our TV stations. Once the camera crew showed up to interview her, at the store, with the Ballpark franks still in the case..............THAT'S when the store finally removed them. Duh!! Those 'better' brands usually don't have a low fat recipe and that it what I need because of Lilly. My vet doesn't want me using food that has tons of fruit and veggies in it because cats don't need it and it is another unecessary filler. I am so lost. I thought my Royal Canin was safe. Innova, By Nature, Nature's Logic, California Natural, Azmira, Flint River, Wysong, Wellness... to name a few good one. Don't worry about the vet and the fruits and veggies, some foods these are added and they don't put artificial vitamins in. If you go to petfooddirect.com they have notices on all recalled brands and won't sell them. Waggintails.com went a step further and won't sell any varities from a recalled brand. I was looking up ingredients for Iams for my brother and Iams dry foods don't list any of the dreaded ingredients. Yes I did, and they passed except their teeth are looking bad. He siad cut back on wet food and see if any improvement, if not, then they need dentals. Davey was so scared he peed! I feed the Nutro dry to my cats... but I'm thinking of switching to Felidae. They use human-grade products, and nothing of theirs is being recalled. I've got 14 cans of Natural Balance canned food that I'm taking back to Petco. No, they're not involved in any recall (yet) but there's brown rice in most of them and that's enough, at this point, for me to return it. A big thank you to Denise, who has turned me on to Innova. I've spent what time I've got on the computer doing research on this food and then was able to find one, and only one, place here in Topeka that carries it. So I called and had a long talk with the people there about this food. It's good to see this but my first thought is......okay, you're sorry and you apologize. But why in the h*ll are you using ANY product that comes from China? Certainly we have the same product here. My rant is that Kansas is the wheat capital and Nebraska and Iowa are known for their corn. So will someone please explain to me why we're buying it from overseas? Makes no sense to me. I've also read news reports that say this melamine has gotten into the human food chain and word has been sent out to hospitals and doctors to be aware of kidney problems in humans. But this whole situation is stressing me out, especially in light of the fact that Snowy went through that period of 5 weeks where he was so listless and we could not get him to eat. And what were we feeding at the time? Nutro canned cuts in gravy!! His tests are all fine but he still won't gain weight and he's eating like there's no tomorrow. Anyway, I need to buy cat food this weekend so I'm thinking that we're going to have to take a drive and get at least a small bag of Innova and see if the cats will eat it. Natura makes different formulas so we'll have several we can try. But.....first it was wheat gluten and now it's rice concentrate. Innova is a great food, but on the rich side. It gave my cats and dogs diarrhea from hell. I posted a food-rating system below. Felidae might be an option if your cats don't tolerate Innova. Another safe food is By Nature. NO corn or wheat. I have some here so I checked the label, lots of fruits and veggies. None of mine ever got diarrhea from Innova and I'm sticking with it cause I am not feeding any food by any company that has had a recall and nothing with corn, wheat or rice in ANY form. I'm hoping that the place that carries the Innova (Dog Day Afternoon) has the Natura foods in small, sample bags. I don't mind paying more for their food, even if we are feeding 5, because I only want the best, and the *safest* food for them. I can only hope that there's no diarrhea from this food but I'm also hoping that it might take care of skin problems that several of my cats have. Cinnamon has had dandruff for a long time but now Snowy has it and so does Emme. I noticed that the Innova/Natura website addresses this specifically. But I'm with you, Denise, in that I don't want to feed any food that has been involved in this recall in any way, shape or form. These companies screwed up.......and pets died!! I wouldn't mind trying the Felidae food but I just checked their website and there's no place in town that carries it. I'd have to drive to Lawrence or Kansas City and that's not the best option. Even though Lawrence is only about 30 miles away, trying to incorporate a drive like that into our already crammed schedule could be rough, especially since I don't travel well in the car any longer. Silvia Christina and Lillyrosie had their annuals last night and did good. Only got their rabies though. Vet said the other one is only every three years now (the distemper one). Silvia was so scared because the last time she was in was for that terrible surgery to remove the string she swallowed. When her dad walked out of the room to weigh the carrier, she freaked! She needed her daddy there with her, it was so cute! And little Lil lost 8 ounces. YEAH! She is down to 17 pounds which is terrible for a tiny boned cat!
