I'm in the office alone today and boy is it quiet..I'm bored to death....may have to pick up my cell and call someone......
I had to be here by 8:00 this morning, then will leave by 4:10 to head to Ridgway to work the WW meeting....which means I won't be getting back home much before 7:00 tonight!!! What a long long day!!!!!! (NT) -- Kate, 7:37:10 am, Thu, 08/09/07
LOL. If you weren't tied to the office, I'd have you come my way and help me give Cinnamon his daily dose of Petromalt. Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention that after only 2 months with the new vet, he's been diagnosed with mega colon. If I can't get things "moving" with the Petromalt, he's going to have to go in for an enema. I've pestered my old vet for years over the fact that Cinnamon is so darn constipated and now it's come to this. (not trying to be gross here, but instead of pooping in a nice, long tube, Cinnamon has to really strain to get out a large ball of stool..........and it's hard!! He was just beginning to develop "litter box aversion" when I called our new vet. Of course, Cinnamon isn't one of those cats who will lick Petromalt from my fingers. I have to catch him, hold him down and try to scoop a one inch ribbon of the stuff into his mouth. (NT) -- Sandy, 7:44:38 am, Thu, 08/09/07
Than I have to hold him until he swallows it so he doesn't spit it out. This is just so much fun!! Yeah, right! I've got him *up* to 2-3 large, hard turds per day but I've only been forcing the Petromalt down his throat for about 3 days. If this doesn't get him going, he's going to have to go in for an enema, which, believe me, he's gonna love!! All this, and when your hands hurt anyway, it makes it a bit of a struggle. Even though Cinnamon may be older than me (in cat years), hey, I'm the boss and what I say is what's gonna happen. So.......by gosh and by golly, he's gonna poop!! But -------- can you say tired?? YUCK! I don't envy you! For some reason, mine won't eat that petromalt anymore either. Mega colon sounds nasty! Darn, on top of everything else, this is all you need! I had to use one of those fiber powders on Julie once, and it is tasteless and I put it right in her food and no problem at all. I only needed a quarter teaspoon. I can't remember which brand it was that has no taste. White bottle with green cap I think. Much easier that petromalt - as long as they eat wet food. (NT) -- Ramona, 3:09:57 pm, Thu, 08/09/07
Since you mention the green and white bottle, I think you're referring to Benefiber, which we've tried, along with Metamucil, regular mineral oil, vaseline, milk and yogurt (the vet said to try this since most milk products will give a cat loose stools) and both Laxatone and Petromalt. We've even gone the canned pumpkin route. Cinnamon wasn't interested in any of it and the Benefiber and Metamucil actually clogged him up MORE. If it's out there, we've tried it so now we're just back to forcefeeding the Petromalt/Laxatone, which reminds me that I need to pick some more of that stuff up this weekend. Happy Hump Day!! We're doing the "4 H's" around here..........hot, hazy, humid and hellish. I was out this morning to clean the birdbaths, fill the feeders and water the flowers and within 10 minutes, I was a limp dishrag. After 30 minutes outside, all I wanted was to get back inside, take my clothes off and get a cold drink. Other than that, there's not much going on around here. The kids start school next week (Wednesday) and it'll be nice to see some kids outside for a change. I can't believe the difference from when I was a kid........we were outside no matter how hot it was. These days, you can't pull the kids away from their video systems. I literally can count on ONE hand the number of times I've seen the kids outside this summer. What's everybody else doing around here? Kinda quiet. And Vicki........where ARE you?? Hello! My SIL had both knees replaced yesterday and my mom had a hip done today. Both are doing well. It's hotter than blazes here but I hear Arizona is really bad! Usually is! Denise, I'm so relieved that your SIL and your mom came through their surgeries okay but it sounds like you're really going to have your hands full. Do you have any idea how long your mother will have to be in the hospital? That's a lot of running for you to have to do. And your headaches? Do you have any idea what's causing them? Honey, you need a break. It would be so wonderful for you if you were feeling great, Leon was healthy, your family was all healthy and happy and the animals could put any and all of their problems on hold. Thanks for asking, Kate. Cricket is doing wonderfully!! He grumbles, stalks around the house and loves to come into the bathroom with me when I do my soaking. For whatever reason, he loves being petted with a wet, soapy hand. And after my shower, he goes into the bedroom with me to flop on the bed with the fan on to cool/dry off..........but he gets so excited over the smell of the soap, he drools. I've only checked his mouth once and that was about a week ago. It looked horrible, at least to me. All black and burnt looking. But he's eating well and playing so right now, I'm not too worried. But I do need to check his mouth again. The problem is...........we got him another depo shot 3 days before the laser surgery and the depo shots are usually good for about 3 weeks. Emme, on the other hand, is her usual sunny self. She's already puked all over the floor this morning. I had picked up the food dish and put it on the table, then went to the bathroom without thinking about moving the bowl. During the time I was in the bathroom, she jumped up on the table, cleaned out the bowl and then puked it all up again near the front door. Right now, she's crying for more food but I'm not feeding her anything else. She's gonna have to wait. If we could just get her over this "binge and purge" cycle, she'd be perfect. Poor Emme....don't you just wish you could teach them (tell them so they would understand) that they don't have to eat so quickly that there is enough food and you won't take it away from her....maybe then they would slow down a bit and not get sick!! Maggie seems a bit better on this point too...since she was ill and quit eating the Hills Senior I had to change her food...well this food is more triangular in shape and she can't seem to eat it as quickly...so she has slowed herself down in eating, and it seems to be helping with the throwing up too...just like Denise had said....Good Luck... Claudia asked that I get on here and ask for prayers for her FiFi. She has had major setback and CLaudia is very worried. Even though FiFI has started to regain feeling in both back legs now, all of s sudden she cannot poop or pee. Not sure what that is all about since her legs are getting better, but Claudia is very very upset. The vet did say he was not ready to give up on her yet. She is only 4. I was kind of wondering if maybe now the blood clot is moving around and maybe just cut off a nerve leading to that area. Even though she was paralyzed, she was still able to eliminate waste so it's weird. I'd like to go with them the next time they go visit. Benjamin Eddy finally finished all his meds and got released from the backroom. He seems to be doing well wlthough his pee balls are still very small and numerous. Oh, that poor little girl. I sure hope her vet can figure out what's going on with that baby and they can bring her health back. I think it would be a good idea if you were to go with Claudia to the vet's office and get a first-hand account of the situation. But at the very least, congratulation on Benjamin finishing his medication and happy clapping here for Julie's eyes. I pray that Ben and Julie stay healthy so you can help Claudia through this. Yeah they visited again today and for some reason she is lethargic now. The vet changed her meds in the hopes she would be able to deficate on her own, but no luck yet. I asked if I could go with them on Saturday to visit, so we'll see if tehy let me. My sister Caron doesn't like my 'know it all' attitude with cats and she gets very defensive. Denise, I don't know what you use for virus protection but when you sent me that link for Tally's medical site, you might have picked up a virus or, at the very least, some spyware. We had been using Windows Live One Care but the computer notified me Friday that we had a virus. Gerry spent most of the weekend cleaning and disinfecting the computer and we went back to using Trend Micro PC Cillin. Turned out we had a whole slew of spyware, adware and even a "Keystroke" virus. Anyway, I was doing some research on MegaColon last night and went to Tally's site and BINGO!! Trend Micro popped up with an immediate spyware warning. (NT) -- Sandy, 6:15:58 am, Tue, 08/07/07

Good grief..........is it hot enough for ya??? I was dripping by the time I walked the driveway and the circle to get the newspaper. I mean, this is ridiculous!! It was 82 at 5:15 a.m. and we're forecasted to make 100 today with a heat index of 115. I could maybe understand this weather if we lived in Vicki's area but for heaven's sake, it's just miserable outside. Emme's already puking this morning and believe me, we're not airing out the house any longer. Too darn hot. With the drapes closed all the time, I'm feeling like I live in a cave but at least it gives the illusion of a *cooler* cave. Yuck, yuck and more yuck. I'm so ready for October. We are having a killer day here too, but for some ODD reason, It isn't bothering me. In fact, it is weird, but I haven't been as hot this year as I usually am. I haven't been in the pool very much at all. Maybe it was because I got so used to the oceam now the pool just isn't good enough anymore. I went out and boughtthe Print SHop ProPublsiher Deluxe 22 and just got done installing it. My old card programs don't seem to want to work to well since the latest upgrade to windows. I have that brochure to design and need it to look as professional as possible. I am excited about playing with it. Hope it isn't too hard to figure out. And tomorrow we are supposed to have near 100 degrees NOT including the heat index so I think I'll be staying inside to play then too. Plus that means I get to spend more time with BenBen. I have to keep him back here in my computer room to moniter his urine and catch him to give his medicine. He is proving to be just like his older brother Roger. Good luck with your new ProPublisher Program....I just don't seem to have the patience for that stuff anymore..Used to enjoy making out cards and stuff....not anymore...I've even got so lazy that when I order my Xmas cards I order them already imprinted and I type and print the address labels...I know that isn't as personable as it should be, but I just don't have it in me to write them all out anymore....

Hello! I remember Ben's baby! He was so funny with that thing! Ben was blocked? Poor guy. What are you feeding now? Did he have struvite or oxylate? (sp?) It;s only in my left eye and I am wondering if the HUGE punch I received in it 25 years ago has something to do with it. THey said that I need to avoid smoke and take a look at this special grid every day for changes. It's the same eye I have ocular migraines in. I plan on seeing a specialist to see what can be done. Well, there (not their) is no pain, so thats nice. My eye just vibrates. Not the eye itself, but my view. It doesn't last too (not to or two) long and thats about it. I guess you've had a lot going on in your world. I wondered what had happened to you, especially after your email to everybody about the board..........then you dropped from sight. I'm sorry to hear about Julie and also Ben but at least in Ben's case, it sounds like you've got it under control. And poor FiFi. I hope the study and extra care will help her so she doesn't have to be put down. And your eyes!! I don't think I dropped from sight that soon after the e-mail. If they wouldn't have blocked VOY.com from my work computer, I'd be here 20 times a day! They are putting in new cable lines now so hopefully, I can stay up and running. Yes, I am very worried about Fifi but she is getting some feeling back in her legs. She is on pain killers and heparin, a blood thinner, she is also on a diet but the neatest thing is the water therapy. They have a tiny treadmill under water that they make her walk on, and she does very well. I sure hope she does ok, poor Claudia just couldn't handle losing another young kitty. Just saying hello! Went to Diane's funeral this morning, very good service and lots of people. I know that made her family feel good. It's gotten hooter than all get out and I was miserable. Was going to golf late this afternoon but not sure I can take the heat. Everyone is doing well. Jaz has a checkup mext Monday but he seems AOK. My mom is having a partial hip replacement next Wed. The inner part of her 18 year old hip finally gave out. That means the end of next week will be spent at a hospital. I hate that and it's 90 minutes away too. Then will have to help her out for a few weeks I guess. She was thinking about this fall but the doc said it's got to be done now! She is to use a cane till it's fixed. Have a nice weekend everyone! It had to be draining on you also to be at Diane's funeral, although I'm happy that it was a good service and people did show up. And I hope you didn't go out and try to play golf. It's just to darn hot outside. As for me, I'm hiding in the house and I usually make two forays outside each day......one for the newspaper very early and later, about lunchtime, for the mail. That's it. I've been trying to pull some weeds and deadhead flowers when I go out for the mail but the sweat just runs. Boy, I'm so happy for you that Jazpurr is okay and I hope the vet pronounces him to be in excellent health. I hope your Mom will be okay also. We've had two local deaths in the past few days. One guy had pancreatic cancer but after treatment was feeling pretty darn good. He fell in the kitchen on Sunday and died on the way to the hospital. The other is a 44 year old woman with brain cancer. She's had it for several years but they called hospice in last week. I've been racing around like a chicken this morning. Today's my baby's birthday (Ken is 34.......OMG) so the minute Gerry was out the door, I started in on his cake. Just making a quick drive by here. I've been awake most of the night. Cricket is doing well and wants to eat more than I'm willing to give him but at least now, the food is staying down. Unfortunately, Cinnamon has been puking most of the night, so I've been awake with paper towel in both hands. This morning, I've been cleaning up the spots on the floor that I missed last night. Also, the company that installed our new windows two years ago finally brought a replacement window for a guest room (that window would not flip down for cleaning on the upper sash). The installer just left, it's thundering outside and we're in a flash flood warning. Not much rain for us yet but it's only a few miles south and west of us. But this rain, on top of the 2 1/2 inches we saw Sunday and Monday, is causing problems. Thanks for asking about me but I really, REALLY need to try and stretch out for a few minutes. I didn't manage to get a nap until late this afternoon but it worked out because Gerry (bless his heart) brought dinner home with him. But Cricket very quietly cried all the way to Gerry's office and then on to the vet's, pushing his little paw through the carrier door. When I'd reach back and stick my fingers in, he'd rub up against my hand. And the poor guy looked panic stricken when they took him to the back. I'm nervous, worried and feel like that proverbial "cat with a long tail in a roomful of rocking chairs." Oh, please, just let him be okay and please let this be the right decision. We got Cricket home about 4:30 and he was still pretty out of it. He was happy though to see us and did his "Rooowwww" at us several times on the ride home. He had some trouble getting his hind legs under him when he came out of the carrier and was staggering around like he was on a 3 day binge. He ate just a little, which came right back up, but now he's sleeping at the back door, on the rug, with his head propped on Dad's shoes. We haven't dared to try to look at his mouth, although the vet said he did beautifully. They lasered off all of the bloody, hamburgery tissue down to clean mucous membrane. Oh, and the X-rays don't show any missed roots. They thought they saw one but after checking the gum and digging for it, there was nothing there. (NT) -- Sandy, 6:14:20 pm, Mon, 07/30/07
So now, we just wait. It's been a horrible day.........!! Oh, we got more rain last night and today, which we needed badly, but I had opened the windows when I got home from dropping Cricket off and just about the time I got ready to close the house up and turn the a/c back on, our power went out. It was about 80 in the house but the humidity was at 74% and the dew point was over 70. With no a/c, no moving air, no fans, no nothing, it was just plain miserable. The electrical company got our power back up about 2 hours later but now, Cinnamon is sick. He can't handle the heat and especially, the humidity, so while we were eating dinner, he went to the basement and puked all over everything!!! And I DO mean all over. Oh thank you! I'm not as nervy as I was but I hate taking any of them there and leaving without them. Good morning!! What a beautiful day we are having here in PA...they had been calling for rain all weekend, well let me tell you, they were wrong...yesterday was gorgeous too!!

Around here, yesterday was sunny, hot and very humid. Today we're getting some rain showers but not nearly what we need. And it's still so incredibly humid. But yesterday was a good day. After taking Cricket to the vet, we came home and dropped him off. Then we went out to breakfast. On the way home, we stopped at Target and I printed off my girlfriend's wedding gift list at their Club Wed kiosk and we also stopped at David's Bridal. I had told Janet that I'd love to provide her with her garter but couldn't find anything that I liked. So........I special ordered one. It will be in lavender and white and I'll bet she loves it. Her wedding is Western themed and she got her dress from Shepler's. Very Western with a cowboy hat and veil and she's wearing her purple cowboy boots underneath. So the garter will fit in perfectly. As for Cricket and his shot, it usually takes about 48 hours for the medicine to really kick in and help his mouth. I can tell that it's still bothering him because he's eating very slowly and carefully. But I'll keep the car tomorrow, take Gerry to work at 7 and then mosey over to the vet's office and drop Cricket off at 7:30. We need to find a way to get him off of these shots. When they were getting ready to give him the injection yesterday, the vet found a lump in the spot they normally use (in between his shoulder blades). For now, we're just going to watch it and pray that it goes away --- and that it's just a reaction to the last shot he got. But he's been getting shots in that same general area for over a year now so I'm praying like crazy that it doesn't turn out to be an injection site sarcoma or something like that. Thank God for Friday!! But I just destroyed any chance to sleep in. Cricket's puking again so I picked him up and checked his mouth.........Uh-Oh! Red and ulcerated. So, we have an 8:45 a.m. appointment tomorrow for a depo-medrol shot and then on Monday, I'll be a basket case along with Denise. Cricket's going in at 7:30 a.m. for the lasering and X-rays to see if there are any missed tooth roots that are causing this problem. If so, they'll (OMG) slit his gums open and dig the roots out. Poor baby. I'm so hoping we're doing the right thing but this Lymphocytic Plasmacytic Stomatitis is such a sneaky, horrible disease to try and treat. If this doesn't work, I don't even want to think of where we'll go from here. But I'm trying to stay positive and really pray this does the trick. So, does anyone have anything GOOD going on this weekend? If so, share ---- so the rest of us can live vicariously through you!! But still, have a good Friday. Wish I had a magic wand! since this is an immune thing, check out Transfer Factor, I swear by it cause if made Bogie not need Cush meds (chemo drugs) anymore and I am thankful for that. I take it and use it for the diabetics and the FIV guy is gonna get it now too. The have a pet product but vets that have used it start with the Advance Plus formula. Cush meds is Cushings. Bogie has atypical Cushings. Lysodren is a chemo drug used to damage the adrenal gland to cause it to not produce so much cortisol, that's is what normal Cushings is. Maggie is doing pretty good tonight, she was a little groggy yet when Rick picked her up and not too sure on her feet, but as evening has gone one she is clearing up quite a bit..and she is hungry....Dr. Lee said not to feed her until the morning, but she is litterally begging, so we gave her a little bit just to see how it sets with her, and you can tell she feels better having something in her stomach. I'm going to give her just a few more bites when I go to bed to hold her over until morning.....
I have to start giving her the antibiotics tomorrow....I am thinking of waiting until tomorrow evening for her first dose, that way she'll get a couple of meals in her first...not sure if the amoxi will upsest her bely or not... (NT) -- Kate, 7:06:05 pm, Wed, 07/25/07

Thankfully yep we did have an "ordinary" night Denise!! And, yes, she really was hungry so I made sure to just give her just a little (and made sure it was the bigger pieces so she really did have to chew and couldn't just swallow them whole) at a time and made her wait awhile before I gave her any more...I swear she looked more bright eyed as soon as she got some food into her belly....
she seemed to sleep and rest just fine all night and she sure was glad when it was time to eat this morning!!

Maggie is at the Vet's...(thank you Sandy for talking to me the whole way down and back...sure made it an easier drive....)Maggie seemed fine this morning, as I posted below she ate and was walking around...then she walked past me and lifted her tail....here, looks like one of her anal sacs got a cyst (or too big and didn't express itself the way it should) and it abcessed and broke....she was feeling better because the pressure was off, but now she's got an opened sore back there.... Thankfully Dr. Lee was able to fit her in this morning so I cancelled my mammo and off we went to the Vets.....
believe me she was not a happy camper, but she will be ok. Dr. Lee is going to lightly sedate her and clean out and flush out the wound and then we can bring her home at 4:30 with a round of antibiotics. I feel so bad for her...I just hate it that she is sick and in pain, but thank heavens they didn't want to keep her over night...I do not sleep at all when one of those two aren't here....I just worry too darn much..... Cats are odd creatures. I catch most illness's by seeing them do something abnormal or sleep somewhere they normally don't and it makes me watch them and sure enough, they are sick. Yep, Dr. Lee said she would check her all over and also take her temperature. In the short look-over she gave her while I was with them she said everything (besides this problem) seemed fine....

Years ago I fed SD Lite. That was way back when Iams and SD were THEE premium foods. I hated the shape of the food, little pellets that rolled all over but the cats scarfed it, no one chewed it, just swallowed! Several threw it back up too! When I changed food it took forever to get them all to eat one food but found the Royal Canin Special. It's neat cause there are four kibble shapes (mine don't seem to like the disk shape). I fed that for 8 years but then wanted to cut carbs and the company was bought out and the new people added more grain anyway. I have no clue where I was going with all that, it's bedtime! Actually you do have a point about the little pellets that rolled around..that is what the old Hills for Senior looked like and as you said, she scarfed it down usually too quickly and then threw it back up whole a lot of the times.......but as you said she loved it....The new Hills is more triangle shaped and is a bit larger, she definitely has to work to chew it and can't swallow it whole so that may help slow her down in her eating too... I took her late feeding upstairs last night and she ate it right up like there wasn't a problem in the world....then a little later I felt her jump up on the bed and settle in in her spot between my legs on my body pillow....so that was all the norm....
This morning she seemed fine...I decided to try to feed her downstairs, if she didn't come down fine, then I'd take it up to her, but she came right down and ate it up...and came back down for her second feeding...and she did use the litter box during the night...so maybe she was just under the weather and just plain hungry yesterday because she really didn't like the other food and got a little weak?? Kate, I'm SO relieved that she's eating better and seemingly back to her old self. I came down to the basement this morning with the express purpose of checking on Maggie and also Jazpurr. (Denise, is Jazpurr doing any better???) But I see that everyone beat me to the board yet again and it's only 8:45 my time. I guess it's possible that Maggie just didn't care for the food or maybe she just had a bit of a tummy upset or was feeling under the weather. Sam and Molly went to the vet today. Sam is my FIV guy, A couple years ago he would get little sores around his ears, I'd put him on immune boosters and use stuff on the sores and they would clear but each time they have come back and worse. I couldn't get these sores to heal and he was scratching his fur out and they are now on his neck, chin and feet. Vet gave him a steroid shot.....argh...not what I'd like but if he gets some relief ....I need to up his immune boosters, scared this could make him vulnerable to something else. Molly went to have a check up and some labs. Since I got her last year I have no history on her to know what her liver enzymes etc. might be so wanted a baseline. I mentioned her not eating so well and he found a yucky tooth. A pet denatl about makes me ill just thinking about it so next Monday I will be a basket case! Maggie has me a bit worried.....she isn't exactly acting sick...but she also isn't exactly acting like herself either.....
I was feeding her Hills Science Diet for Senior but, of course, the only store around here that carried it only has it sporadically and I got tired ot being scared of running out, so we decided to change her over....Several weeks ago we started changing her over (very very slowly) to Purina One for Seniors. I started out with two cups to one of Hills to Purina..then went half and half, and now I'm down to two cups of Purina to one cup of Hills....and now she doesn't seem to be eating very well... Used to she was starving at all times...to the point that she about drove you nuts screaming at you when you fed her..and now she comes down when she is good and ready and is actually leaving a bit of food in her dish..this NEVER happened before......I'm still feeding her the meals broken down into two servings each so she doesn't woof them down, but obviously she isn't woofing them down anymore anyway......
Could the Purina be more filling for her do you think, so she isn't as hungry? She is pooping just fine (actually maybe a little better than before...

Boy, I'm really late getting here today (exceptionally bad night last night) but geez, Kate, I really don't have any suggestions for you on this one, except that it does sound to me like perhaps Maggie just doesn't like her new food. Have you ever considered ordering her food online? This is something I never did but lately, I don't mind ordering stuff that way and my daughter uses online ordering to get her Advantage for her cats........and at quite a discount over Petco or the vet's office. But Denise is much more knowledgeable about cat food than I would ever claim to be and you can always ask Lloyd too, since I know he monitors the board. And I've said this before.........even though Hill's is made right here in my city, I don't particularly care for their food. Too many grains. Can you compare the fiber and protein content for both foods? If Purina is higher fiber and/or protein then she may not need as much food. Is she eating the amount it's recommended to feed her on the package? Could be summer too. No one here is eating as much. If it's just her food amount and she is acting OK otherwise then I'd say "don't worry" but I know that is easier said than done. Keep us posted! Saying a prayer! She doesn't need a senior formula. Some senior foods are softer and easier to chew and for that reason it might help some but I don't feed senior cause they usually lower the protein. Mine really like Natural Balance (ultra or premium, don't remember exactly what it's called) and Royal Canin Special used to be a favorite but when they added corn back I quit feeding it. Hey Kate...... tried to call. I feed Felidae, and there is a Feed Store that carries it about 20 miles from you. It's for all life stages...... seniors included. Can you take her temp? If it's low or high, I'd get her into the vet. If it's normal (ranging from 100.5 to 102.5) then you could probably wait a day or two to see if it's just a little bug. Listen to her belly........ if there is NO bowel sounds (gurgles), then VET. If there are a TON of bowel sounds, then she probably has an upset belly, and you could wait a day or two. You might want her teeth checked. I just had Molly to the vet and she needs a dental and I'm wondering if that's why she has been being so bad at meal time. A diabetic HAS to eat when you want them too! I have to drive 45 minutes to get to a Petco so I order online a lot. Check out shipping costs for Petfooddirect cause they are in NY or PA. and it wouldn't cost as much as it would to Iowa. I try and buy from a place in Nebraska or Illinois cause shipping is less. Jaz had his check up today. Cause of his purring the vet couldn't hear his lung sounds well so did anoter x-ray. Still some fluid in there so now it's Lasix once a day with a check up in 2 weeks. He still isn't himself, just not showing much energy. I'm to watch and go back to 2 pills per day if breathing gets labored again. Only thing vet can come up with is that the time of year caused an asthma type issue...beats me! WHen this happened to Grey she came home after three days and was the same old Grey, it didn't take this long and I would have guessed her to be sicker to begin with. Keep him in your prayers, OK? I wish!! It gets harder and harder to plan for dinner when it's so hot, we don't want to turn the oven on and even going out and using the grill is enough to make a person melt. Have they ever had a dental? I forget how old you said they were. Any other health issues? I've ahd to force myself on some cats I've brought in. Hi Kate! He is about the same, just avoids much moving around but is eating and drinking, I brought him up for nap time and he snuggled in. His breathing is OK so unless something changes I won't call the vet. Vet is open till noon Sat. and I've called them out after hours plenty of times. HIs Friday night to Monday morning bill was 350.00 and I'd do it again over the weekend if he needed it. I'm asking for more tests when we go back Monday, urine, CBC and anything I can think of. We are FINALLY cool! They had to come back out for a couple hours today to finish the job. I about died yesterday......... It got to over 100 in the house, my computer chair broke and sent me crashing and I wrenched my back... I was taking dogs out front to walk in the sprinklers to help everyone cool off, and my little Snickers snuck out the door and took off. I got blisters on my feet cuz I had to go after him and was barefoot.... Was NOT a good day yesterday! We are finally cooling tho...... Thanks be to God and Happy Friday! The cold front came through but a person sure couldn't tell from the humidity and the temp. Yucky, yucky. I've got Travis today since Mom is out of town, on the road. He's never a problem and I kept the car today. In about an hour, we're going to take off so I can get a haircut and then to McDonald's for lunch (oh, heck, I promised him!) After that, we're headed for the pool. We have a new family acquatic center at one of our larger parks and he goes quite a bit but I've never been there. So Travis and Grandma are going swimming this afternoon. I'm more excited than he is since I don't get to go swimming very often........and yet, I love to swim. Does anyone have any good plans for the weekend? Jaz is still lethargic. I called the vet and he said it could take a week for him to bounce back. He goes back on Monday but if I see any decline I will go sooner. Dinner was wonderful, the cake was oh-so chocolately and the company was the best ever. Punkie loved her gifts (well, of course, she "should" since it's exactly what she asked for) and the kitchen is clean, dishes done, etc. But it's sunny, hot and humid already and I had a really bad night. Cinnamon decided he had to be snuggled against me and in my one arm all night long and it was really too hot for that, even with the a/c going. So once I finish the cleaning, I'm headed back to bed. Vicki, I'll continue to keep both Todd and Sharon in my prayers. But that's horrible, and unacceptable, to read about the kind of care he's getting in the hospital. He, and or Sharon, need to do the same kind of thing I've done in the past (when Punkie had Travis). If you can't get care, or medication, in a timely manner and the nurses don't respond to your requests, then call the hospital administrator from your room and lodge a complaint. Even a phone call to the director of nursing can go a long way. There's no reason for us to pay these huge prices for hospital care and then get anything less than stellar care. And the fact that "his" nurse was at dinner is not a good reason, or excuse, for him not to get his pain medication. I so hope Todd can continue to improve and will get out of that place. I was busy most of the day working on a transport for Boxer pup who was very neglected... he had mange and his owners never took him to the vet, so it got all infected. Vet just called. Jaz is brething better than eysterday, has been off oxygen since 3 p.m. yesterday. They want to do an x-ray in the morning and then I might hear the news I want, that I can bring him home. He said there is still some rattling in there and wants to check the heart to make sure what he saw didn't show an enlargement. ***BIG SIGH*** I've had enough, it's time for him to come home. I just ran Jazpurr to the vets. He ahd to stay and I doubt I will be able to sleep. He hadn't come upstairs today but there were people here this morning and he is one to avoid that kind of thing. I checked hima couple times, he purred, wanted a tummy rub but at bedtime he wouldn't eat the canned food or flop over for a tummy rub. The last 2 cats to the vet were ones with brething problems. Izzy the FIP kitten didn't make it home and Grey was there for 3 days. Say a prayer please? I'll know more in the morning. It sure makes me wonder where a bug comes from that gets ONE cat of 13, how does that happen??? I think the bug comes in and just strikes one kitty much the same way it will strike just one person in the family...for some reason Jazpurr's immune system was/is weaker and he couldn't fight it off this time....Please keep us updated...I'll be thinking of youi both... He has to stay the weekend. His breathing is improved but a chest x-ray shows fluid, maybe an enlarged heart. They aspirated some fluid and it's clear so doesn't indicate infection. Oh, Denise. I feel for you. I know I feel very jumpy and unsettled when one of my cats is at the vet and if they have to stay.........I'm a wreck. And I was so hoping you'd have a nice, quiet, peaceful and enjoyable weekend with Leon being gone. Good grief, I hope Jazpurr is okay. And your question is one I've asked myself often. I keep mine inside, they eat the same high quality food, their water is clean and their dishes are washed and sanitized twice a day. So where do the germs come from and why does one get sick instead of all five? The only thing I can figure is that somehow, we must be bringing the germs or bacteria into the house on our clothes or shoes. 'Tis finally Friday. The gateway to the weekend. What are your plans for the weekend? Nothing much going on around here. I *may* have to make a quick trip for cat food but other than that, the errands are run, the grocery shopping was done on Wednesday and I don't have a thing on the schedule. Punkie's birthday is Sunday (as well as Cinnamon's). She's going to be 37 (OMG!!) and Cinnamon will be 10. So we'll be having a family dinner Sunday night and her order for the menu is, of course, steak on the grill with a baked potato on the side. Easy enough for me to handle. Gerry has an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) function to attend on Saturday afternoon but I don't think I'm going to go with him. We're heating back up and it will just be too darn hot to be outside in a park. Anyway, the only other thing on my to-do list is to bake Punkie's cake. Does anyone have anything good going on????? They are still looking for a new coil...... which I hope they will find, because it's the difference of a few hundred $$ vs. a few thousand $$. I don't want to commit to a new unit till they've exhausted all efforts on finding a new coil. We're doing ok with the fans and the A/C set at higher temps so as not to overwork it..... so I'm content to wait. Plus, to install a new unit, we'd be without air ALL day, maybe even 2 days. Right now, I don't think I can handle that! I'm rather hoping if they cannot find a new coil, the old one will get us thru at least August........ I can live with 88 thru the summer. Kate, I envy you your walks. Between my hip and my ankle/foot, I'd be lucky to make it a block. I try to walk around our cul-de-sac when I'm not hurting too much but it's not much of a walk..........only 5 houses around our circle. But I think back to when Travis was a baby and I was babysitting him every day. We'd go out in the morning by 7:30 or so and walk our entire subdivision. Up and down each and every street. Even in the winter, we'd be gone for about two hours. He loved it and it was great exercise for me. I used to joke that unless I was pushing that little umbrella stroller with Travis in it, people wouldn't recognize me. Anyway, the cake. Punkie has put in an order for chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Nothing too hard there. I think we're just a chocolate cake type of family. Only Gerry will break the mold on his birthday. So you're a spice cake kind of gal too, huh? Oh, well. I think you and Gerry can keep that kind of cake, although he eats his with regular white frosting. But you brought back a wonderful and very tender memory for me. When we were kids and my Mom would make a layer cake, we kids would eat the inside areas of the cake first, leaving the long "L" part and the middle bar of the frosting until last. Dad would get upset at us so if he caught us doing that, his fork would swoop in and take the frosting right off our plates. Actually, he was very smart.......he'd get his frosting plus ours!! At the time, it would just p*ss me off but now, looking back, what I wouldn't give to have him here to snatch the frosting right off my plate. But you're right about the frosting being the best part. Update on Josie....
unfortunately going to the Vet was completely out of the question today..so we just kind of kept a close watch on her....She slept a lot Rick said but seemed to be resting comfortably....the gas seems to have gone away and she definitely had more perk to her...still not back up to her usual self, but definitely better than she was last night and even earlier this afternoon....
but the funny thing still is, she won't take the food of her dish...if Rick handed her some piece by piece she ate it, and then if he held the dish for her she gobbled it right down, but she refuses to take the food directly out of the dish while it's in the holder...now what on earth is up with that??!!! I wonder if she had a bout of that doggie flu that's going around. Dogs all over the country have been hit by it, and it effects each one diff. Josie is one smart dog, isn't she? Maybe she just had a 24-48 hour bug, just like we people get, and now, even though she's feeling a bit better, she's decided that she likes having you and Rick "fawn" over her. The extra attention is nice, especially if we're not feeling 100% like ourselves. I think you're on the right track. Let her rest and get back to normal and if you have to hand feed her for another day or so, well, just take it one day at a time. I would think, though, that eventually she's going to figure out that she's got to eat out of her bowl or go hungry. But since you're her parents, I'm sure you'll figure out what you want to do. Kate, it's healthier for any dog to have their bowl elevated, maybe it's the bending down that is bothering her? Elevated bowls can be expensive, my BIL took one of those cheap plastic step stools and cut a hole to hold the bowl. Another thing you can use safely is Lil' Tummys, a baby product for gas. It's just symethicone (sp?) and can't hurt a thing. I hand fed Bogie for months when he was first dx'ed with diabetes, now Molly pulls this on me every so often! Brats! Oh, and one other piece of news. In talking with the vet that we've been taking Cricket to, we're pretty much decided to go ahead with the laser surgery on him. It's just a matter of finding the money in the budget. But he had called me the other day to discuss Cricket and he also wants to do an X-ray to look for missed roots on his teeth. Since one side of his mouth healed and the other broke back out in this stomatitis, Dr. Snyder thinks that it's possible that our other vet missed a root or two and if that happens, the stomatitis comes right back. I was really pleased that Dr. Snyder brought up taking a look for any missed roots before I had a chance to mention it. One other small benefit is that Dr. Snyder and his practice are not as expensive as Dr. Shipman. I mean, we'd find the money, no matter what, but it's nice that they're keeping our finances in mind. Would anyone like a small bit of *good* news? I just happened to be in the basement last night as Snowy decided to use the litter box. It was loose and stinky and I was thinking "Oh, no, the medication didn't take care of the giardia! Now what do we do?" But while holding my nose and trying to keep from gagging, I scooped it up and double baggied his little treasure. I let Gerry know that he was going to have to make a stop at the vet's office today but he said he couldn't do it until lunchtime. OMG!! Keeping something that stinky in the car, with the heat and humidity, for 5 hours???? We'll never get the smell out of the car. Anyway.......the good news! Snowy's tests came back clean. He's cured!! Since his poopie was runny, the vet did run some other tests besides just the giardia but there's nothing there. Sandy, not to rain on your parade.... but Giardia often tests negative till it gets so bad it finally tests positive. Also, keeping it in the car in the heat probably ruined the sample. Your best bet is FRESH, and if you can't immediately go to the vet with a sample, you have to keep it refrigerated. That being said tho, here's hoping for solid BMs from now on for Snowy! If he's been on meds and it's cleared up most of the infection, then yes, he can test negative. Every vet I've ever had has told me stool samples have to be fresh or kept refrigerated. If left in room temp or heat for even an hour, the nasties in the sample can not show up for tests. If you continue to have runny poops, I'd see about having another sample tested. Even if refrigerated, try not to let the sample be more than 24 hours old. I've also been told Giardia is hard to catch until it gets pretty bad.... A dog or cat can test negative multiple times before a positive pops up. Usually I just go ahead and treat with Flagyl anyway, as it has stuff in it to firm the bowels back up. Just not quite sure what to make of Josie today...she really didn't seem to be too interested in her food again this morning, which kind of surprised me...I thought she'd really be hungry....when I handed her a couple of pieces she ate them, but wouldn't take any out of the bowl by herself..then Rick held the bowl and she ate from it then...finally when he put the bowl back in the holder she did finish up the food....Rick tried to walk her about two hours later (again, because it helps her poop) but they barely made it half way up the road and she was too tired, and they had to turn back....she did poop in the back yard and it was "normal"....

Kate, tooth and gum problems cause an animal to constantly swallow the bacteria. It can upset their stomachs, cause kidney damage and heart damage. It can very well make them throw up. She may also be nauseated from it . Nausea can also be causing her strange mouth gestures too tho. I think if it were me, I'd take her to the vet for a geriatric blood panel (which checks for everything), and a complete check up.... Better safe than sorry! Many, many years ago, when I had my black lab, we didn't know nearly as much about animals as we do now. That being true, I'll defer to the experts here. But depending on how she's acted today, I think a trip to the vet might be a good idea. Or at least a phone call. But on the flip side, I tend to worry quite a bit after dealing with Holly and her problems for 3 years and then Squeegee's cancer. Yesterday my sisters dog followed the horse and wagon when my BIL gave kids a ride. She is old and arthritic and usually doesn't head out like that anymore but a couple hours later they couldn't find her. She was aways from home stuck in a small creek and couldn't get up. Please say a prayer that she just over did it trying to get up and didn't really damage anything? Her name is Meeka and she she is a white german shep. She was given meds last night, crated and will see vet this morning if she is still unable to get up. Poor girl, bet she was scared and flailed and wore herself out. Thank you for asking Sandy....it's been a long long day with her....she hasn't thrown up today but had eaten very very little....we took her for a short walk (the best way to get her to go poop) and she did have a movement..it was a little runny but nothing too major, I was actually just happy to see her go because I was beginning to be afraid that maybe she was blocked or something....later on we tried to get her to eat..she would eat a biscuit like it was manna from heaven, but when we put food in her dish she just turned away....I tried feeding her one piece at a time and she would take a couple then that was it...... Glad she's eating....... Our puppy-school trainer breeds/shows black labs. She says when her dogs get a little older, she puts a Gaviscon in their meals... She said it's not unusual for them to have upset bellies as they age, and this cuts down on excessive acid. We keep Gaviscon and Gas X or Phazyme on hand for the dogs. KAte, I keep a product around called Digestive Upsets. When a healthy dog misses a meal it usually resolves itself but with diabetics I need to fix them up and this stuff has helped everytime. When Bogie or Molly won't eat I give 5 drops and every time they are ready to eat within the hour. Had to use it on Bogie yesterday and an hour later he ate and got his shot. Josie seems better this morning, but didn't seem to be too interested in her food until I started feeding it to her by hand..then she wouldn't take it out of her dish..so Rick held the dish (we have it in one of those containers so she doesn't have to bend over too far to eat) and when Rick was holding the dish she ate....so I think she is going to be fine...now she just has to realize we aren't going to hand feed her for the rest of her life!!!
