Subject: I hate to keep asking for prayers......
but here I go again....I'd appreciate some prayers for my Dad.....(msg inside....)

My dad hasn't been doing too great lately.

Not exactly sure what is going on, he fell two weeks ago Friday night (on November 23rd) in his bathroom, and he was banged up but seemed fine. He was walking just fine..... Then last Wednesday (November 28th) his feet and ankles started swelling like crazy (he blames the fall but I can't see where the fall would make that kind of swelling..the swelling is more heart related if you ask me) anyway he wouldn't go to the doctor and we did get the swelling to go back down in a couple of days by making him wear those pressurized socks and elevate his feet.

But now, for some reason he can barely walk. The swelling is down but he still seems unable to walk..it's more of a shuffle...and he is really depending on his cane. He says his upper leg muscle ache. I'm not saying they don't ache, but he does have a tendency to exaggerate sometimes.

I'm thinking something is going on with his heart....and yes, he probably does have some pain in his legs but I'm wondering if his heart is giving out... Also noticed he was having a lot of trouble breathing on Thanksgiving....

So, something is going on, and I also am pretty sure a lot of it is depression. Whenever something happens and he isn't feeling well he gets all depressed and talks himself into the fact that he is dying....and I'm afraid he is doing exactly this again....

He does have a doctor's appointment at the end of the month, but I hoping I can convince him to go sooner if I can get him in....

Thanks in advance for the prayers.....I hadn't mentioned anything sooner because I was hoping whatever was going on would have been worked out by now...but obviously that isn't happening.....

Well I'm tired tonight....it's been a lot of running back-and-forth to his house every day plus with the furnace....haven't gotten a whole lot of sleep the past few nights....

You have my prayers Kate. I think you are probably right in your thinking. No convincing him to go to the Dr. sooner? Stubborn old people! : ) Drive ya crazy and worry the heck out of you. If he has heart problems has he also had other artery problems that could cause leg pain? Shuffling can be a sign of stroke I think too. ? Let us know. Sleep well and warm! Thanks Denise.....He is diabetic (not on insulin but on sugar pills at this time) and his family does have a history of heart problems, and he had a slight stroke about three or four years ago. He has been fairly active but is definitely slowing down..he has really been showing his age the past few months. He is a hard man to describe...he is not happy, he is alone and honestly, if I want to say exactly the way it is, he wants to die....I think he prays for it every day.....so, while I'm hoping and praying for some relief for him, what he really wants is to die.... Could his diabetes be out of control? That can cause leg problems. They say that depression is one the most untreated conditions in the elderly. It's sad cause a daily pill could make their lives so much better. My grandmother was this way, they started her on Prozac and in 2 weeks she was a different person. I really don't think so Denise..he keeps a very close watch on his sugar levels and really seems to keep it well under control. But I will check with him this morning to see what it was when he checked it the past few mornings......

Leon's surgery was at 7:30 and he was home by 11:30! He is comfortable in front of the TV. He is too keep it up for a couple days and only walk wearing the boot. I am leaving Zeke at the vets tonight, his sore is still draining...will get him by noon tomorrow. (NT) -- D, 11:12:34 am, Thu, 12/06/07

went in and checked on my Dad this morning and he was doing pretty well. Walking better than yesterday and was definitely more alert and "with it"....guess if it's his heart these kind of things will be happening..where one day he is good and the next he's not...... Oh, Kate. You have my prayers also. I've been there and done this and it's one of the hardest times you'll go through. My mother literally willed herself to die and Dad lost all will to live once she was gone. With your dad, I do hope you can talk him into going to the doctor sooner. Is there any way you can call his doctor, fill them in and have them call him with an "earlier opening" that they can offer him? I *do* have a feeling that his fall is suspect here but the swelling, I agree, is probably heart related. Between his trouble breathing and now the swelling, it kinda sounds like congestive heart failure to me. But I'm no doctor and don't claim to know that much. Thanks Sandy.....when I went in to see him this morning, he was I'd say 96% better than he had been yesterday...so, once again I backed off about getting to the doctor....he does best when he can be left alone and keeps to his own routine..so I'm doing my best to keep it that way.....Rick and I've talked about this until we are both blue in the face, and for the time being, we feel this is the best way to handle it.... Oh geez, I hope he is ok. Does sound kind of heart related. But you never know. I just saw where you are thinking that he just wants to die. I knmow a lot of older folks get like that. I could sort of see it. I mean, I can see MYSELF getting like that when I am old. It is hard for all of us and even harder for some. But Denise is right, it's too bad more people refuse to take a simple little daily pill that would them be so much happier and content. THen they might not look forward to dying. So sad and definitely very very hard for those that love them and have to watch. Maybe you can talk to his doctor and have him suggest an antidepressant.
