Subject: I just had the strangest/oddest telphone conversation tonight....

I've got this friend, who I've written to for probably 10 or 15 years, we met on the phone through our other jobs and hit it off.

We have never met in person, but send cards, and e-mails, and talk on the phone rarely.

Well my birthday came in April and I got a card from her as usual with some lottery tickets in it. Same as always..well her birthday is in July so I sent her a card also with some lottery tickets.

Well it's been so strange, I never heard from her...we always e-mail to thank eachother and let us know if we "won big" or not...

Last week I sent her an e-mail saying I hoped everything was ok that I hadn't heard from her since her birthday, did she run off with the money from the tickets (thinking maybe she never got my card and I wanted to politely let her know that I did send it...)

Anyway, Rick is on 2nd this week and I decided to call her. I knew she had been having some heart troubles and I was getting really concerned that maybe something had happened to her...

Well.....

I called her tonight and her husband answered...and he tells me "Debbie is no longer there" well first thing that hits me is oh my G*D she died and I didn't know....but nope, that's not it....

Here she left Tom about three months ago!!!

I about died when Tom said this. He sounded brokend hearted...I felt so bad for him.

He did say he had no way of contacting her, but would be seeing her in a few weeks at the Lawyers, and he would tell her then that I had called.

Gees..what a shock!!!!!

Obviously something was wrong..just not what I expected!!!!

This "is" strange! I guess it just goes to show you that you never, ever really *know* people, even if you think you do. I wonder if she's still working at the same office or if she's walked away from her entire life. It sounds like this whole situation caught her husband off guard, and for that, I feel sorry for him. Kind of a "been there, done that" kind of thing. One thing I've learned is that if you give people long enough and give them enough rope, they'll most often live *down* to your expectations. They'll lie, cheat on their husbands and just all round prove their paranoia and neurosis. But don't let it get to you, Kate. When it's not your problem and you can't control it, try to laugh. I'm not saying that you shouldn't feel for her husband and/or wonder what happened, but since you can't control it, say a prayer for them and mentally wish them well and then say goodbye and move on. she retired from her job last Spring....
actually Sandy, I got off the phone and DID laugh!! I'm really not worried about it at all...it was just strange having Tom tell me she left him!! I hope she does get in contact with me, but if she doesn't that is fine too...like I said, we weren't exactly "close friends" just acquaintences that have kept in touch via e-mails and letters over the years.... I was at work when it came in....I'm going to be in the office by myself tomorrow afternoon..if it's quiet I'll try to give you a call then....if I do, the worst thing that may happen is I'll have to hang up on you quickly....so maybe/hopefully I'll talk to you tomorrow!!
