Maybe the wher doesn't know what it's missing if it hatches with nobody around, if that makes sense? There could be some kind of insinct that only comes into play if potential handlers are present.

One warning: what I find with this author, though, is that she (and he, I suppose) does tend to change things that are written in previous books. I swear the colour of Lytol's deceased dragon changes at some point, from green to maybe brown, and I got the impression in the first book that blue was the smallest dragon (I think someone says "no better than a blue" as an insult, and other deregatory references are made towards them), and then in the rest that changes to green.

I call that lazy writing, really - if you start with something, don't change it. I suppose that's why I'm not really keen on the McCafferey books any more, especially since I read Dragonflight and gave up mid-way because I didn't LIKE F'lar. I mean, some authors can carry that off - I've read books where I dislike the main character, but still want to read about them and find out what happens to them. With F'lar, I just didn't want to carry on reading about him, because he really grated on my nerves.

Anyway, I'll stop complaining about the books, now :P

By the way, is the bond between wher and handler actually strong enough to be influenced by the mating flight? I always kind of figured that the emotional connection between them was more like how a human and a dog interact than a rider and a dragon, or handler and firelizard.
