A scary place Dennis.
Looking at my Book .Joined the Ormsary,(Denholms ore carrier, Nov.20th '53.Port Talbot.We arrived there Xmas Eve.
Subjected to the same treatment you describe.
Whilst lining up outside the Rec.room and going in one at a time ,to see if the dis.a. photo and your "Heid" matched.
Bit of joviality amongst the lads."Siberia for you ",etc.and similar one liners ,as one stepped inside.The ensuing laughter didn't do much to brighten the military.s faces.
The BBC. World Service was on.(shut down shortly afterwards)"Here is the News.In Moscow today Beria the chief of? "(was shot by firIng squad.
The Capt . told us later , if you decide to go ashore, that he would be unable to help ,if some incident occured.
We had extra grog and a great party in the Cabin.
Mean while the Heavy-Lift women wharfies worked round the clock driving their three ton grabs of ore:Roll on Workington!
