Subject: Tragic news about mama eagle

I have been watching the bald eagle nest at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens in Virginia each day since The Chief posted the link last month. It was wonderful to see the three eaglets growing up under the parents' care. Unfortunately mama eagle was struck and killed by an airplane this morning. Like thousands of other viewers, I'm deeply saddened by this tragedy.

Three bald eagles from Norfolk Botanical Garden were relocated to the Wildlife Center of Virginia on April 27 after their mother was killed by an airplane the previous day. The eaglets are receiving excellent care and are being prepared for release into the wild in August.

The Wildlife Center of Virginia was formed in 1982 to provide quality health care, often on an emergency basis, to native wildlife. WCV is also the permanent home of "Buddy," another bald eagle from Norfolk whose disability prevents him from living in the wild.

You can support the Norfolk eaglets by making a donation to the WCV.

[> Oh, no! I hadn't been keeping up - life's been so busy... Oh, I'm so sad! I wonder what this means for the eaglets? How close are they to fledging and will they survive w/one parent? Will the father keep on keepin' on, or will he leave in mourning? Thank you for letting us know, Sunset. -- The Chief (not what I needed to hear at this hour of the night...), 21:26:19 04/29/11 Fri [1]

[> I live less than 15 miles from the Botanical Gardens and didn't know this had occurred. Was away from home for Easter and Mother's Day celebrations and didn't have any local news. So sad. -- carramor, 19:20:15 05/10/11 Tue [1]
