Subject: Aiden Michael update

He's is off the oxygen and all IVs, is eating well and is gaining weight. He has to go 48 hours without setting off any alarms (he's still being monitored) and he can come home! Still haven't discovered what caused the problems, all test are normal. Emma (big sister) is exciting about her baby brother coming home but still contends she will not change a dirty diaper! (According to her that's dad's job)

Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. It's been a comfort to know I have friends world wide that will take a moment out of their day and help a friend in need.

[> So happy to hear he is doing well! My 2 cents on what was going on... -- doc, 04:17:34 06/29/12 Fri [1]

...I suspect he had mild PPHN (persistent pulmonary hypertension), which means high blood pressure in the lung circulation. It's a normal state before a baby is born, but those pressures should start to drop after birth. For some babies it takes longer to drop, or they may have other issues, which cause the pressures to go back up. In the worst case scenario, the baby may need to be on a ventilator, get treated with nitric oxide or require ECMO, but in mild cases the pressure may just rebound up mildly, especially with stresses (crying, pain, feedings, etc.) Those milder forms may be more difficult to detect, except for vacillating oxygen saturations. Thus this infants may need oxygen for a period of time, until the pulmonary blood pressure comes down to normal permanently. All that said, if this is the actual case, little Aiden should do just fine!!!

he was in a hurry to get here and went from step one to step six, so he had to go back and do steps two - five! I also expect him to walk before he crawls! But don't tell him mom!
