[> Cathy, did your heart go into a-fib? If so, sometimes they can control it with medication or if it happens repeatedly, a cardiac ablation can be performed to stop it from coming back ( my brother had one done and it worked like a charm). I don't know anything about pacemakers. -- Cokie, 21:55:02 01/14/12 Sat [1]

[> Cokie, it's been going in and out of a-fib for a few years now. They have been controlling it with meds, but that doesn't seem to be working as well anymore. Cardiac ablation? Is that where they stop the heart and restart it? That has been suggested. I'm not real crazy about that idea. They tried that once years ago and it didn't want to start again. -- Cathy F., 22:34:50 01/14/12 Sat [1]

[> [> I think you are talking about Cardioversion. They dont stop the heart they just ramp up the joules and shock the crap out of it to change the rythum. We have done it a few times in the ER. Hurts like heck from what I can tell since you are awake for the procedure. -- TF, 08:27:47 02/04/12 Sat [1]

[> Cathy, you wouldn't happen to be eating grapefruit or oranges/vitamin c are you? My FIL said that recently his meds for the same thing weren't working and he almost went to the hospital. He read his medical book and found out that that kind of fruit will hamper the effects of those kinds of meds. -- shippermom, 12:42:30 01/15/12 Sun [1]

[> Thanks Shippermom but know I'm allergic to Citrus and don't care for grapefruit. I don't take vitamin c because it gives me sores in my mouth. I wonder if it could be something else thought. I'll ask my Dr. this week when I see him. -- Cathy F., 20:17:09 01/15/12 Sun [1]

[> [> you may want to google the name of your med and adverse foods and see what pops up- that will give you a week to change your diet - many doctors (no offense doc) don't pay attention to things - for instance - a friend of mine has krones which can cause arthritic flare ups - never have they told her when it flares up- that nightshade foods (tomatoes potatos and egglplant) aggrivate it - but they do. -- chris k, 05:39:40 01/16/12 Mon [1]

[> No, it is not when they stop the heart and then restart it. I don't have all the specifics, but it involves going up into the heart with a catheter and cauterizing the part of the heart muscle that is giving off the irregular electrical impulses. -- Cokie, 22:04:27 01/19/12 Thu [1]
