Subject: Couponing....

Have we talked about Couponing here?

Do any of you use coupons? If so, how seriously? Do you use a few once in a while, or are you a candidate for that Extreme Couponing show?

What works for you and do you have any tips/hints for others looking to start saving money w/coupons?

What's the best coupon deal you've ever gotten? How much have you saved in one trip? How much do you save on average? What do you do with the extra money?

Discuss and share!

[> I've tried to coupon, didn't work. The coupons have you buy 2 or 3 of an item. To me that's not saving money, buying what you don't need. If you have a large family maybe you can make money. There was a show on Hoarders about people that coupon. Their houses were immaculate, but down in their basements they had rooms filled with stuff they bought with coupons just so they could say they didn't have to pay money for any of it. And when asked if they used any of the stuff they said no they just gave it to food pantries. It was like a game to out smart the stores. -- Cathy F., 08:57:32 01/24/12 Tue [1]

[> [> I know people who *do* coupon for charity. We have a home for pregnant girls here and this couple gets all sorts of great deals on personal care items that they give to the home. And I see no problem playing the coupon game, outsmarting the stores, if you give to charity. Why not? But if you're that good, then you need to get on the food bank payroll! [> I use them but you have to calculate a lot to find if a coupon is offering you a deal or you are end spending more money that you intended and for stuff you did't want to buy. -- Maja, 09:30:07 01/24/12 Tue [1]

[> [> Exactly, Maja - the things I need or like to buy rarely have coupons. I don't have room to store a lot of things, so I only like to buy what I need when I need it. I use a lot of store brand items, too, which are cheaper at regular price than the name brand on coupon. Plus, there's never coupons for milk, bread, meats, produce or staples like flour and sugar. -- The Chief, 13:41:48 01/24/12 Tue [1]

[> When I'm stateside, every now and then, I find coupons that actually makes sense to my purchase needs for that month -- for example, if there is $2.00 off a purchase of 2 6-pack rolls of toilet paper that is from a competetively-priced brand, then I will go for it. This is because I KNOW we will all be at our beach place for a few weeks and the rolls WILL be regularly used up, especially if we have beach visitors (which we ALWAYS do!). inside.... -- mj, 13:54:26 01/24/12 Tue [1]

There's also often coupons for soft drinks -- bulk purchases -- bu, again, we can go through several cans of diet drinks -- people like to bring cans in a cooler to the beach when they go down -- so if I can save a few dollars -- I'll do it! Otherwise, I notice that, in general, coupons are a pure marketing tool aimed to fool the buyer into thinking you will save oodles of $$. Like you've all already said, if it's stuff you wouldn't ordinarily buy, stock up on, or need -- it's pure fantasy to save $$ through 'couponing'.

[> I do some couponing, but not as much as I used to do. Part of it is probably that we're empty nesters, and there's no kid stuff to buy, but it also seems that there are fewer useful coupons in general. I'm not interested in buying two or three packages of a product I've never tried, or of something I can't use up. I am very conscious of how much I would really save over what I'd usually buy. (inside) -- Deemus, 16:26:06 01/24/12 Tue [1]

I still usually have four or five coupons when I do a weekly food shopping, but I used to have fifteen or twenty regularly. My closest store, instead of doing their own coupons, now has specials that automatically register when you use the store card. They also do double coupons, up to a dollar, but most of them are now at least a dollar. The store keeps a running total of savings, which includes sale prices as well as coupons, and even with just the two of us here, I usually save close to $1,000 in a year.

[> I use couponmom.com. They have those great matching lists where they tell you what is on sale at a particular store and where the coupons are for those products. And if you need something that is not on sale and can't wait for a sale, they have a wonderful coupon database where you just look up the product you need and it tells you which coupon insert it is in. -- JJ (Ronda)--It's great because you only cut out the coupons you are going to use at that time. Otherwise you leave all your inserts intact each week for ease of future searching., 19:45:20 01/24/12 Tue [1]

[> I would like to do what some people do in terms of getting stuff that I use and then giving away the other stuff. I guess I wouldn't mind being in a group that did it (and supported me). I'd gladly save diaper coupons for a young mom if she'd save something I used. I guess what I'm rambling about is I'd like to learn how to do it on a large scale. -- TH, 16:22:05 01/26/12 Thu [1]

[> I never find a good coupon for brands we use and to drive into a town that offers double and triple coupons would cost more in gas thatn what we would save with the coupons. LOL We use a lot of in store coupons from H.E.B which is a regional chain. They have combo meals where you buy the main food like a paclage of Eckridge sausage and get like 5 items for free. Usually bag salad, frozen veggies, a bread product etc. -- TF, 18:57:04 01/29/12 Sun [1]
