Subject: Sorry about that, MB! I'm still sticking to my guns, too. As for what to tell businesses that want a phone # when you check out, ask if they can process the transaction w/o it. If not, give them the # of a nearby business like a McDonalds or a Walgreens. It's not like they're ever gonna call it, but it will keep them from selling your # to a sales person.
