It was also my understanding that DB was very angry that DJE was so important to the show especially following Season 8 negotiations (if I recall correctly CBS president threatened no DJE no JAG and trouble for NCIS, too). TPTB seem to prefer people to find out about things indirectly. That's how DJE's wife found out that her character was being killed off (and, by extension that she was out of a job).
