  I just saw a little clip(no pun intended)
  of DJE in his role on the Guard.
  
  I am so glad he is back on TV, you guys know I love seeing him, in just about anything...but I hated that the first time we see him, he's taking a drag off a big doobie.
  
  Now...I love Montel Williams,(he is apparently an advocate of the use of medical marijuina for MS) and if it works for him, more power to him....but I have been missing my hero so bad.(Loved him as Jimmy, and also as Terry Evanshen, even when he was out of control)
  
  I didnt want to see DJE like this...one toke over the line?
  
  I'm opening this up for discussion, I'm not judging, maybe the problem is mine.

    • But I thought he was refer to him being "weak" from whatever it was that made him stop on the way home from work, not the fact that he was smoking to relieve the pain.   • I saw the clip also - is that what he was doing? It was so dark I couldn't see it all and the volume was too low ( not the clip but the show itself). I think in this role he is not going to be a hero. I am actually looking forward to see him in some other type of role than hero. I wish we were going to be able to see more. But back to your original question - it doesn't bother me, I enjoy seeing him "streach" his acting wings by doing new things - I would be bothered if he were to play a role that was very violent.     • I wondered if they shot this scene with him in shadow, for people like me, that cant hack seeing him do that.(even medicinally) I didnt say I was right, it was just my first impression.   • I have a couple of reactions: On the one hand, I think it is way too early to judge this character based on one scene less than a minute long. We just don’t know that much about him yet. On the other hand, for such a short scene, I felt like I did learn something about him – that he doesn’t seem to feel sorry for himself or angry about his situation, which must be devastating; that he showed concern for his daughter and his girlfriend; that he is working and has a home and family. That to me is a far cry from portraying a drug addict who is angry, resentful, out of work, homeless, mean.   • I think that this is going to be a short term project for DJE. I just hope that we don't have to watch him die on the show. However, I'm really glad to see him take on a role like this. It certainly is the antithesis of Harm in some ways. Harm will live on in fanfic and in the hearts and minds of all of us for a long time, but other than that, we've got to let him go.     • I think the clip just took me by surprise. I had been building up in my mind, seeing this guy on TV, I am a fan of his other work, and I just wanted to see if anyone else felt the way I did. I am perfectly willing to see him in other roles, his role as Terry Evanshen was complex and even scary at times,(not like Harm at all) but I couldn't tear my eyes away, he made the character so absorbing.   • Smoking medical mj is contoversial, but actually has been shown to be a very effective for sufferers of chronic pain.     • One of the things that I loved about Harm was that while he had this larger-than-life hero persona, DJE always gave him a human edge. He showed his weaknesses, his vulnerabilities, his flaws. I think that's what actors live for, and I'm sure he's having fun doing that in this new role, too. ITA with mj -- this might be a risk, but risks are good and necessary for actors' careers.   • I agree with you, mkim. The use of medicinal marijuana is controversial, and poorly studied. Of greater concern, is the long-term side effects, especially in the elderly and severely ill. Marijuana is more carcinogenic than tobacco smoke when inhaled, and 'held' in the lungs for a longer period of time than tobacco thus increasing the carcinogenicity.   • IMO, as with all of DJE's acting, he gives his characters humanity. It makes them more credible. His smoking was one more facet to his character and it gives me the feeling that he is a fighter. One who is not willing to merely allow his MS to destroy him. As SeaBeth says the scene was short and he showed concern for others while mentioning that he wasn't feeling too well. IA with Lee that this will probably be a short term role but one that may show that he can play all types of roles. I wouldn't like him to play a creep, he is too good at being the good guy.   • Something in me feels that DJE would not have taken this role had it been one that evolved into him being creepy, sleazy, or wimpy. He's like Jimmy Stewart -- he can still be a 'good guy' even when given a different nuanced character (such as JS in 'Rear Window' -- paranoid, a bit dark) than a 'squeaky clean' affable, hero. I still think that his use of medical mj in this context won't be construed as condoning or 'normalizing' blatant, recreational drug use.     • You miss my point. I don’t mind that DJE is playing a role as someone who is chronically ill, and will eventually die. I saw a clip, which shows a future scene. He is exiting a car with a cane and clearly limping. He goes on to discuss his future death. I don’t mind those scenes or the presentation of the illness, it’s effects or death.       • Because, not even having seen the scene, it tells you a lot about the character. It tells you that he's not willing to sit alone and in pain in a dark room without doing something about it. He hasn't given up on easing his symptoms. And it tells you he's willing to go outside normal boundaries to do it.           • Oh, and just in case you think this is irrelevant…you have no idea how much time healthcare providers spend trying to convince patients that the treatments they see on TV or on the internet are not efficacious, and may in fact be dangerous. It’s scary how trusting the ‘public’ is in TV/internet personalities, rather than trained medical professionals. You are right on the money when you say that we probably won't see any of this correct, state-of-the-art MS related therapy portrayed anytime soon. I'm afraid the mj-smoking David might crop up a bit more than the moon-faced (from steroids) David. Fortunately, though, I do think most people do get that 'reel life' approaches to illnesses and real life are not to be confused. Internet mis-info is a whole other travesty and frustration, but a good doctor/nurse quickly dispels any incorrect and/or false notions, without too much precious time wasted.           • Well, I don't know enough about the character or his story to know whether the medical marijuana is a last resort, or if he's choosing to use it instead of other treatments. I think mkim is right that he's just a fundamentally different kind of character than Harm.         • I believe David Renwald was involved in extreme sports earlier - the kind of personality that would be willing to take risks. Maybe the writers were trying to enhance this in the character (he was a fighter) - I understand the problems this kind of TV persona can create when you have people in RL who are dealing with similar health issues as doc stated. I guess it's important to remember this is a TV show and the writer "take liberties" to create the character they want. We can only hope that DJE's portrayal of DR doesn't dwell on the use of marijuana as a way of making through each day. (NT) -- ED, 15:37:39 01/25/08 Fri

    • I agree, mj was not necessary to set that scene, but maybe there's more coming to the whole 'mj' storyline. We don't know yet. Maybe it does add to the characterization -- maybe DJEs character was/is ant-conventional drugs (which btw are also not without deleterious side affects and complete 'purity' even if clinical trials are conducted on them -- think Big Pharm) inside -- mj, 10:19:30 01/25/08 Fri
      • Oh, forgot to mention -- I don't really know enough about MS to say that there are conventional drugs to treat it or even the symptoms of it (such as pain) other than anti-inflammatory agents or pain relievers (both OTC and prescriptions).   • Actors, as opposed to 'personalities' or 'celebrities', LOVE to get different types of characters to play. It is why they choose the life in the first place. Taking issue with the character, or aspects of the character, the actor portrays seems specious to me. You don't have to admire the character to admire the skill of the actor. I tried to learn Italian with my husband (whose native tongue is NOT English and he is not Italian) and he picked Italian up better than me even though my grandparents were Italian and spoke no English! Watching TV shows with good English (like JAG and other shows our gorgeous DJE is in) is great motivation for you!!! Forget proper lessons! I love Laura Pausini music and movies with Marcello Mastriani, but, they are not as plentiful these days. Why don't you teach DJE Italian and then he can become a huge hearthrob in Italian movies! I read somewhere that DJE and his wife love Italy and were even thinking of buying a home there, so maybe it's not such a crazy idea to try to contact him and offer to acquaint him with the country, teach him the language, etc. Who knows? I think that we need to see where DJE will take the character. It may be dark and yet there was a clip of him smiling and enjoying himself. I mean, we tend to be a little bit more liberal on the whole than you guys, but BC is... well - it's a whole different place again! The people who wrote this character were probably not thinking that it was a big deal at all. That's all I was trying to say. You guys can feel free to be offended by his actions, by all means!   • Lifetime doesn't seem to be advertising it at all, which is very frustrating. The only thing I have seen is on the website of Sue William Silverman: http://www.suewilliamsilverman.com/newsletter.htm She is the author of the book on which the movie is based. • So many times I am watching a movie or tv drama and I think, "DJE would be great in this role, or in a remake." -- Cece, 18:48:06 01/24/08 Thu [14]
  I can absolutely see him in Pride and Prejudice, though Colin Firth more or less owns the role of Darcy. But DJE would be great as Captain Wentworth in Persuasion, or Mr Knightly in Emma.
  
  But I would love to see DJE in a movie series role, like Bruce Willis did in the Die Hard series.

  • Don't ask me why but I pictured him in a role as the owner of a big ranch - riding horses, etc but he's also a "part time" detective - kind of like Matt Houston, or Robert Wgner's role in Hart to Hart. Not married but possibly with a child or two. Flys planes - to get from his ranch to "town' or where ever he's working. • DJE is guess starring in a Canadian TV series called The Guard about the Canadian Coast Guard. Specifically it follows the lives of four crew members at work and at home. DJE plays the boyfriend of one of the crew members.   • There is always a Torrent around somewhere! I watched the premiere ep and thought it was pretty good. If I had a DVD-R in my pooter, I would put it on DVDs but I still only have a CD Drive so, sorry. But the torrent has great quality and the ep is definitely worth watching, not only for DJE.   Judi & Cece have turned over to me the moderating of this little board. The plan is to allow a whole board for conversation and discussion of ANY DJE character other than Harm. Past, present or future, movies, tv or other media, THIS is the place to discuss ALL things "close" to Harm.
  
  So far, none of DJE's roles have been as prominent or as wonderful as Harm, but we have hope! Plus, his early roles in "Melrose Place", or "Holiday Affair" or "Seinfeld" need some space for discussion.
  
  A few guidelines....
  1) All the same rules of decorum and etiquitte in force on all the HB boards are also in force here.
  
  2) Since DJE is not appearing in any television roles right now, there is no need to discuss ratings. When his new show starts in Canada (whenever that begins), feel free to discuss the ratings of his show.
  
  3) Feel free to post photos of DJE in these other roles, but, as always, no hot-linking or unauthorized use.
  
  So now, let's get on with the subject at hand, and start discussing those non-Harm roles! This might not be the busiest board among the HarmyPortal boards, but we'll try to have fun and offer a needed niche.

  Well, no matter how long I wait to report, nothing will change. CBS finally did win all three prime-time hours on Friday. Of course, the competition was piddlin' poor. As for Cane, CBS thought all 45 million Americans of Latino heritage would watch the show just because it was about a Latino family. And it appears that did not happen.   Thought I'd get somethin started on this bd. There was an clip in my local paper on Thurs. about the new tv season. The headline read "No breakout hits rising out of this TV season". It said 5 wks into the 2007 season isn't performing so well. It stated "Viva Laughlin" a cbs whodunit was yanked after 2 airings. On the other hand 'Pushing Daisies" got a warm welcome from critics & viewers. Nbc's Bionic Woman premiered w/alot of promise but its audience has dwindled from 13.9 mil. to 7.8.CW's Gossip Girl is a hit w/2.5mil. Can u imagine that? A hit!!

  For the 4th week in a row, CBS has lost the 9 pm spot on Friday night. Jericho was tied for 3rd. And for the entire evening, CBS was 3rd in the 18-49 age group. Do you see a trend here? I hope CBS does.

  Another Friday night where CBS did not show too well. They were last in the coveted 18-49 age group. They did not win the 9 pm hour. And it seems that Moonlight has already replaced most of the cast and the executive producer and showrunner has quit. 'Nuff sed!

  One of the big things that I think has been missed in the whole "Jericho" rebirth is the response from fans of the also cancelled "Close to Home," a show that aired on Friday nights, won its timeslot often, and was a good lead in for "Numbers" but got the boot anyway. I've perused a few of the David James Elliott fan websites and message boards and whatnot and the anger is, well, major. And not only are these people upset that the show got cancelled, but now "Jericho" is going to get its rerun spot on Friday nights. I haven't seen any write ups about it, but I'd like to see someone at CBS explain why the network cancelled a show that really wasn't hurting in the ratings. It just boggles the mind. But to all of those disappointed "Close to Home" fans, the best thing for you to do is to rally around the possibility that CBS will release a DVD set of the second season and or maybe a channel like "Lifetime" or "Sleuth" will pick up the rerun rights. I mean, especially in the case of Sleuth, if they can stretch thirteen episodes of "Conviction" to last a year in various forms, I think the "mystery, crime, all of the time" network can do something productive with "Close to Home"'s 44 produced episodes.
  
  And, can't we all be friends? Can't the "Close to Home" people and the "Jericho" people find common ground and admit outright that CBS made a series of really bad decisions and they'll eventually wish they hadn't?

I've pretty much given up on the idea that anyone in charge of a major network has the slightest idea of how the viewers see things--pun not intended. For example, why on earth did they think we would take to the character of Vukovic?? I liked CTH, although I didn't get into it the way I did JAG (I can't imagine ever getting into another show like that). This latest just reminds me to steer clear of getting involved!       • Most of the posters who have commented on Vukovic (and there have been many) have expressed disgust at the character and the way he was presented. Many do agree that he was good looking, but there is so much more to a character than just appearance. You certainly won't find a Vic fan club in this neck of the woods!   Just watched the last rerun, and must say, even though DJE was the primary reason for watching, I really enjoyed the other characters and will miss watching them. I guess next week, I'll review some of Cindy's screen caps and summaries of the episodes.   Turn the dial to watch this last nite & there was no sound for the first 20 mins of the program & it seemed to be spliced up. I turned the dial & the sound was on other programs, so it must have been the station. We just had severe T'storms so maybe that had something to do w/it.   Sad to say we have only 2 eps left to go the 22nd & 29th and thats it. This show had the potential of going strong a few more seasons if they had only advertised it at all promoted it or something.
