Okay. I'll grant this was "Jimmy"-lite, but given the plot, that's okay.

I'm developing a real appreciation for the show, thanks to the intricate and thought-provoking plots they've gone for the last few episodes. For that sake, as well as DJE, it would be a real shame if the show were cancelled.

And yes, I know what the rumors say--but folks! Let's not panic too much here, okay?? Let's wait until something official comes out.

On the plot for this episode--it touched me in ways I hadn't expected. I felt personally wrung out at the end of it. I suppose it's because I've done some work with the 12-step program (not AA, but EA--"Emotions Anonymous") and I can personally testify that "working the program" to it's fullest potential--which most poeple don't, I might add--is by far the hardest "work" anyone can/will do in their lifetime(s). Reason: it's far easier to "fight" the external world rather than look at your own life, evaluate and make necessary "course corrections" to make your own life work better. I've known 20-year members of AA who are the wisest, most compassionate, and downright funniest people I've ever had the priviledge of meeting and/or working with. But it takes a heck of a lot of both work and courage to get to that point.

After a number of years working the program, I began to hear complaints about the program--from "outsiders" who really didn't know what they were talking about!! One big "complaint" seems to be the program doesn't encourage a person to "own" up to their mistakes. Nothing could be further from the truth, at least if you read beyond the first couple of steps. Step #4--take a moral inventory and share that with one other person you trust. In a lot of very significant ways, it resembles the Roman Catholic idea of "going to confession". If that doesn't encourage one to "own" up to one's mistakes in either behavior and/or judgments, then I don't know what it is. The purpose of both "exercises" is to gain some perspective on one's problems. Alcoholics--and people with emotional problems and/or addictions--can be--and often are--too hard on themselves, which then leads to low self-esteem, which then can express itself though negative behavior. On the other hand, there are some who cannot see where their own individual responsibility for the fix they find themselves in starts in any given situation. Doing a moral inventory and sharing with another person helps to begin to get a handle on that aspect of addiction, too.

In general, I was furious with Annabeth for not taking the perp's attempts at "making amends" seriously enough, at least at first. But after "sleeping" on it, I understand her "take" on it a lot better. On the whole, I thought the pros did a good job on taking a ticklist situation and telling a good story. All I know is that I was profounded emotionally affected by last night's episode.

- Seems like the man only wanted to make amends up to a certain point, as long as it didn't cost him the things that he loved. Which in a way, maybe you can't blame him as it is only human nature. You are supposed to take a complete inventory and make amends-I don't think being forced into it by others really means you've met that objective.     - Uh oh, I'm actually going to be in the 'grey area' here. LOL. I think the ep gave us two examples of men who did a equally terrible thing(Lets also not forget the young man who kept his silence so that he could pledge with that fraternity) BUT there was a man who was absolutely remorseful over what he had done, realized the gravity and the wrongness of it, and you had an unrepentant scumbag, who helped to orchestrate the incident and its cover up, walking free.   - This one seemed out of sequence, except for the scene at the Side Bar when Ray and Jimmy are talking, and I really was hoping when Jimmy asked about New York that we'd not only hear about what the cardiologist said, but that he ask Ray if he'd seen Jessie or the ex wife...I'm intrigued about her, cant help it.     - Ray got a postcard from Ed in Maui, but I didn't know if he was just off for a week because they often leave the main characters in the credits if they miss a show, but they're coming back. - I think the episode was thought provoking, it was another one where I felt that when the verdict was read, that there was more to tell. They kept focusing on the husband of the rape victim during the trial, even after he confessed what he knew of the incident. There had to be more to it. I thought Mo's attitude was about right. She was more able to see the 'grey' areas. But also, when youre a prosecutor, how much of the grey do you focus on?? - This may sound a little harsh, but while I agree that justice got turned upside down and sideways to an extent in this case, I don't think it's the victim's job to let the man off the hook because he's remorseful.   - That's a good question, but there were things that convicted him, not in a court of law, but in my mind. It was almost as though all three of the men who testified to the 'jerky guy's' involvement(I'm sorry, I cant remember his name) were still a little afraid of him, they all had trouble making eye contact and holding it. I still think there could be alot more to this. I know its not hard evidence, its just the reactions of the people around him and the accused self assurance that he would get off, he NEVER appeared afraid at all...why? In the Magazine section of our local newspaper, it lists CTH as one of the shows with very little chance of renewal. The article also says emailing and writing CBS will have very little, if any, effect on the decision. Well, let's just see about that.

I will b watching this ep & also taping w/dvr. I read somewhere on 1 of these bds., that when u tape a show thats how they can tell the ratings or numbers. Is that true? I've been taping every ep of Close To Home this season.

- If you watch a show or record a show and watch it from a cable company DVR or a Tivo, most of the time it's reported to Nielsen. It's one of the reasons Studio 60 lasted as long as it did. We may not have any direct influence on the decision makers via this message board, BUT, it might be fun to toss around some ideas of things we'd like to see on CtH that would keep US watching, anyway....

And of course #1 would be **SHIRTLESS JIMMY**.

But what else?

I was thinking that a good dose of comic relief might help. Not slapstick or outrageousness, but the gentle, human quirkiness of a character like Bud or Tiner. (Yeah, I know, once a JAG fan, always a JAG fan...) Personally, I think CtH, as a show, takes itself too seriously. It tries to be a "hard crime" show in an "Oprah's couch" setting. It's a good show, tho - good enough to win it's night as the ratings attest. Bruckheimer is certainly on to something with the women as the main characters investigating nasty crimes that happen to "family-like" people, but there needs to be a little something to take the edge off.

So my suggestion would be to introduce the position of Administrative Assisstant to the Assisstant District Attorney (the AA to the ADA). Let's see Conlon "audition" a new secretary each week, with each character having some odd quirk or conflict that Jimmy just can't deal with (or they can't deal with him). (Similar to how Murphy Brown had a new secretary each week.) Then maybe at the end of a season full of miscues, they hire someone who can handle the job, but can also set up Conlon for a few comic one-liners here and there.

What do you all think and what are your suggestions??

- I agree - it definitely needs something to make it different and a little humour would go a long way. I don't particularly agree with the 'comic relief' character, but just lightening up like they seem to be doing is good. Personally I like the 'out in left field' type humour (ie. House), but it might be a little sudden and out of character for this show presently. Right now it seems too 'cookie cutter' for my taste. - And another thought...... ADD SOME COLOR!!!!! This last episode, while a wonderful vehicle for DJE's acting skills, certainly didn't do the same for his golden complexion and his green-blue eyes!! Even AJ's office, with it's only two windows, dark panelling, heavy wood and leather furniture and a few lamps was brighter and more colorful than Conlon's all-glass and steel digs. "Jennifer Finnigan's real-life beau, Jonathan Silverman, has booked a three episode arc on her single-mother Matlock series, Close to Home. He'll play a political operative who gets hired by Conlon (David James Elliott) for his attorney general campaign. And because I know you'll ask, romantic sparks will not fly on screen between Finnigan and Silverman - and that was at the couple's own request. I guess that would've hit, um, too close to home." If we are to believe this article, sounds like JC is actively pursuing the AG's office if this is going to be part of 3 of the last 5 episodes. Hope this is a good thing.

  - It's all in the production costs and the advertising dollars. If they assumed it would be a bigger hit than it is they may have offered the cast higher salaries than they could afford going out of the gate, or the other production costs may have been estimated too low. The show has to make a certain amount of money or it's not going to stick around. Even if it wins the race every Friday. The TV industry is making Friday a dead night, it's a self fulfilling prophecy. They're painting themselves into a corner with the stupid demographics non-sense. Like the rest of you, I LOVED last nights ep and will write to CBS telling them. The ratings would have been better had they bothered to promote it and showed more JC, IMO.

Ann mentioned below the possibility of a spin-off where DJE plays the Attorney General of Indiana. Would that make for a good show? What kind of storylines could the AG have? Would something like this work or just be another L&O type of show?

- It wouldn't be like Law & Order; states' attorneys-general usually run offices that investigate major crime issues like fraud, organized crime, etc. TWW proved it was possible to spend an entire season on an election, so there could be a first season of JC being the DA who is running for office before he ever gets elected. I tried to keep track of all the promos 4 other shows as I watched CTH, they seemed to air the amazing race-cold case- advetures of christine-numbers-w/o a trace quite a bit during the hour & when that was done & they went back to the show (CTH), they posted the above mentioned shows at the bottom of the screen to boot. U know what I say IMHO "WHO CARES ABOUT THOSE OTHER SHOWS"! I'm not in the preferred age group that they sought after, so therefore I don't need them or watch them!!! Amen. Sorry, just had to rant & rave.
