Author: In it too long - meant to say didn't extract as much dosh
Subject: Storm, that was done when Irish Dancing was a cultural activity and a hobby for the dancer, and the teacher DIDN't extract as must dosh as is possible out of teaching. What you are referring to is when Irish Dancing became a commercial enterprise, and the kids have no time for anything else. I suppose you are indeed missing the fleeting show on pants (knicker if you don't understand), and the 59 rocks in the set dance or jig/hornpipe to avoid having to do the one thing you're suppsed to in a heavy dance, i.e. treble (as with some of the present day multiple champions)? Do you know what? Progress isn't always progress, is it?

I agree with some of your comments in that some dancers cannot treble for toffee & get away with it & that some of the traditional aspects of steps are being replaced by non-traditional steps which is a shame (when was the last time you saw a cross-key?) & it saddens me that some children are penalised because they do not have/cannot afford the 'look'. But the majority of top dancers (even as young as 8) perform the most intricate & complex stepswith great trebles & with masses of stamina & effort & I admire the practise that they must put into it. My kids will never be at that standard because for them it will always be a cultural activity but it doesn't stop me looking at the top dancers in awe because of their ability which quite frankly is in another league to when I danced and to that link and that to me is great progress. The link was a great trip down memory lane but I don't think the majority of people are going to look at it and think 'if only they danced like that now!' Personally I am thinking I wish THEY DID dance like that now because my dd would probably be on her way to the worlds in April at that standard!
