Author: maid getting overenthused
Subject: ive been looking for a new dress for dd as she has been in the same dress for 3 years, then i have come to my senses and realised that if she is in a 'champions' dress and isnt up to that standard then she will look rather overdressed for her level of dancing. so now we wait alittle while longer and she 'earns' her new dress :)
In reply to: Who rules the roost? 's message, "Ok so I read in the Irish Post that parents are havng a hard time with the cost of ID, and are blaming tcs commision(sp) etc.. Parents when are we going to take the control and stop spending 1,000 on a dress, If you want to do all the feis in every country, then STOP complaining, too many parents want their dd to follow the latest trends, Stop encouraging your dds to keep up with the kid next door. What are you teaching them. We are responsible for the overall layout of feis, dresses etc. I know tcs and adjs are to blame for lots of thing in ID, but parents when are you going to stop playing the blame game?" on Fri, Feb 09 2007, 17:15:40

[> Just been having a look on e-bay at Irish dancing dresses. Why would you pay 600.00 for a secondhad dress when you can have one made for that to your dds specification. I don't care what name the costume has behind it. Due to dds age she has to have one made every year, I sell her old one for 350.00-400 and have to find another 200.00 for a new one. Personally wouldn't pay more than 400.00 for a secondhand dress. No wonder some of these dresses don't get sold MAD MAD MAD prices. -- DDS Mum, Thu, Mar 01 2007, 23:20:33 [1]

[> [> Well. you are still having to replace every year, & find another 200. The fact is most have to be able to sell previous to buy next one new. Many are currently buying @ 1000 - 1300, so taking into account depreciation when that costume is a year old, how much would you expect to sell it for, to be able to afford next new one? At this rate, as you say, there will be no market for 'used costumes' so how will most afford to replace? -- It has to end somewhere, hopefully before bankruptcy., Fri, Mar 02 2007, 1:08:51 [1]

[> [> [> Yes as said befor I still have to find 200.00, howeevr I'd rather do that than pay lets say 15.000 upward try to sell for 900 and still have to find in excess of another 5-6.00. My daughters dress cost 600.00 which is a lot of money but at least I know I can usually sell within 3 weeks of advertising it. Some dresses sre on sites for up to a year. Gos I wish I could make an Irish dance dress, would at least save a bit of money. -- DDs Mum, Fri, Mar 02 2007, 1:39:44 [1]

[> [> [> [> Me too! I have a new one on order but can't seem to sell old one, I feel I will have to practically give it away! I would love to be able to make dresses but with so many only going with the big names, can't see it being a money spinner anymore for local dressmakers. -- storm, Fri, Mar 02 2007, 23:53:28 [1]

[> [> [> [> [> Storm totally agree with you, but in all honesty how many people can tell who made one dress from another. On so many boards the question is who made so and so dress, it's gorgey. Purleeeaassseeeee give us a break. -- op, Sat, Mar 03 2007, 1:20:22 [1]

[> [> [> [> [> [> actually once you've bought a new dress from Gavin, Siopa Rince, Anne Ash etc. you can tell which other dresses they havemade. They all have their own specific way of making the dress. It isn't only the fabrics & designs that make them unique, but the particular method of construction. I don't recognise dresses from dm that I haven't used myself though, hence the many q's asking "who made....?" -- not all own a Gavin, Sat, Mar 03 2007, 11:04:51 [1]
