I know everyone loves ZandB and all, but this one really stirred everyone up. It was a little too close to reality perhaps. There are parents who don't log on every day and when they catch a quick note, without checking everything out and figuring out that it was a joke, it isn't very nice.

At bit too real...it had people calling CLRG to confirm rumors. I'll go to his blog when I need a good laugh, didn't appreciate it on all the boards intended for helpful information. It is like he was trying to find something to get everyone wound up - AND making fun of Feis moms, to boot.

sorry...

[> [> [> ZandB was NOT to blame for these rumours!!! Go read the thread he wrote on DDN and it's nothing to do with this.... some of us mums took it to extremes. The fact is the subject WAS discussed at a CLRG meeting and it's leaked out and people are saying that it's what's happening. STOP blaming Zeb, we all saw his post for what it really was an attention grabber to let people know that a feis was reaching its cap, as they do in USA. If you don't have a sense of humour then you shouldn't be in ID and FYI ZandB is very much a Feis Dad, so he can take the mick all he likes, what he says is generally spot on...and I am a feis mom! -- ZandB supporter, Sat, Mar 24 2007, 1:31:38 [1]

Perhaps it was coincidence and I'm not sure which board this was on (it was, in fact, on every mb I saw) - but the discussion included a link to see what it was all about and the link was to the ZandB post.

I have a sense of humor. What I SAID was that a casual observer (or one who was referred to the boards to see the dress elimination discussion) would easily be led to believe that this was all true and a done deal, based on Mr. Zeb's posts.

Again, I will say, it must have all been coincidence and no one intended to mislead the more innocent of feis moms/dads to believe that this was a "done deal." ALL I am suggestion is that we (including Mr. Zeb) might wish to be careful/more responsible in how we introduce our humorous posts. Somehow, probably my lack of brilliance, I too wondered what was fact and what was fiction.

[> [> [> [> [> And I stick to my guns that this WAS discussed in a meeting in Jan/Feb and this post by ZandB has been doing the rounds for a couple of years now with various feis slotted in and it's never caused a problem before! The link to Zeb's post was put on by someone else as a possible reference, not by the OP on the ER board who claimed her TC had been told by a well established CLRG member! Perhaps they had, just as I had been in Jan/Feb, but I didn't then go blurting it all over the boards...I was waiting to see if it appeared on the CLRG site. I still think blaming Zeb for having a sense of humour is out of order, especially when his OP doesn't actually mention anything specific about costumes and is interrupted by the FEIS CUTOFF WARNING, which was the whole point of the post! -- ZandB supporter, Sat, Mar 24 2007, 17:54:56 [1]

Just going over the entry form and saw it noted "NO SOLO DRESSES" in the Beginner & Advanced Beginner Level. Is this a new "RULE" or something that the Committe decided to implement? I have to say that I think its a wonderful idea!!

[ Post a Reply to This Message ]

Replies:
this rule applies to all feiseanna effective January 1, 2007 (NT) -- toning down at all levels, 05:29:40 03/20/07 Tue
This is a recent new CLRG ruling (NT) -- ., 05:29:56 03/20/07 Tue
It's a new An Commisiun (sic) rule. Talked about incessantly on the MBs when it was first announced. Doesn't affect our school, since our rule has always been no solos before PC -- me, 05:31:01 03/20/07 Tue
This is a new rule effective January 2007. Beginner and Advanced beginner are not allowed to wear solo costumes. CLRG is working towards removing solos from the grades entirely and I believe they are even moving towards no solos at O's etc. even for champs (NT) -- Be warned.....it's coming!, 06:01:56 03/20/07 Tue
I heard that, too! Maybe even like a "uniform", select one of the approved or something similar...I LOVE THIS IDEA~!!! Best thing that's been suggested for years!! (NT) -- I <3 CLRG now. ;-), 06:13:17 03/20/07 Tue
I bet this will never fly, nor do I want it to. Understood for lower grades, but give me a break for the champs. I think they have earned the right to be in those beautiful dresses. I doubt Phoebe and Gavin are really losing any sleep over this "rumor". (NT) -- flame away, my opinion and I am entitled to it, 06:47:04 03/20/07 Tue
I'm with you-and imo the ones who'd flame us are those who aren't at Champ level yet or those who use what other ppl are wearing as an excuse when they don't place. Dancers will leave in droves, but no worry (NT) -- it'll never happen, 08:14:13 03/20/07 Tue
Well My dd is a World medalist and I'm with those that are flaming the idiotic costumes that pass for Irish Dance Dresses. We haven't bought into it. My dd's last dress cost well under $2,000.She looks more traditional than the tinkerbells running around the stages with barbie wigs on. (NT) -- I'd love to see simple dresses come back! WAY TO GO AC!, 12:08:18 03/20/07 Tue
I am a firm believer that the dress is just a "prop"...if you can't dance well, a $3000 Gavin isn't going to make any difference at all. (NT) -- JMHO, 09:08:32 03/21/07 Wed
I HATE THE IDEA! But I'm not surprised.Dresses have become ridiculous and AC fully recognizes it. The dressmakers and parents who insist on the ridiculous costumes are in for a rude awakening. It's gonna put alot of people out of business. Less is always more and since they can't police themselves (NT) -- they are about to be policed!, 06:50:45 03/20/07 Tue
I don't think so. The reason champs do not wear a school costume or uniform is that then a judge can not identify the school and play favorites. Of course, the solo only slows them down. I just don't think the powers that be will let that one get through. (NT) -- MOHO, 07:24:52 03/20/07 Tue
The Powers that be are in Ireland in An Coimissiun. They are the ones who are pushing it and it will get through. The cost of ID has become prohibitive and parents and tcs are putting too much emphasis on dresses. BTW It won't be school dresses but a UNIFORM dress. (NT) -- Everyone will wear the same thing., 08:45:24 03/20/07 Tue
Cite your source. (NT) -- not buying it, 08:47:21 03/20/07 Tue
You will have nothing to say about it and you can buy it or not but it just happened with BEG/ADV Beg....it is going to be implemented over the next few years. Be prepared. Heard it from an AC member and TC at the All Irelands. (NT) -- It's going to happen., 08:53:31 03/20/07 Tue
I heard it too. I heard they will be phasing out solo dresses. Novice and PW are the next to go back to school costumes and they are moving towards an across the board costume for all O's dancers. (NT) -- It's about time!, 08:54:59 03/20/07 Tue
And I heard from a TC/AC member that they MAY go back to solo dresses for Champs only, as it used to be, not that they're going for frump across the board. Our school has always had the solos for champs rule, so it wouldn't affect us (NT) -- the sky is not falling, 10:11:24 03/20/07 Tue
I would love to see only school dresses, even at the O's. It would keep ID affordable for all. It would also put the focus back on the dancing. -- bring on the new rules!, 07:28:11 03/20/07 Tue
Wishful thinking. Going back to the way it started, solos for Champs is one thing, but TPTB aren't stupid enough to alienate all the dancers, TCs, judges, dressmakers out there & they have no wish to make ID look drab. How about we dance on flatbeds w/headlights for stage lighting (NT) -- or barefoot in fields?, 08:11:55 03/20/07 Tue
LOL! This is coming from TPTB. Who do you think insisted on it for the Beg and AdvBeg? They don't care who they alienate. They care about ID and Irish Culture. It is the parents who have twisted this into something else. An Coimissiun intends to bring ID back to where it belongs. (NT) -- I'm not making it up, you'll see!, 08:50:51 03/20/07 Tue
Well, I'm doing a happy jig right now! Kudos to the AC for putting the focus back on the dancing, and being considerate of parents' budgets! (NT) -- you have my thanks and respect!, 09:00:57 03/20/07 Tue
JMO but I think there is a vast difference in seeing a 5 year old beginner in a solo dress over a 13 year old open champion. It is NEVER appropriate to spend that kind of money on a preschooler, however on an older girl who has vested years in this and is obviously serious, it's a different story (NT) -- good discussion, 10:09:20 03/20/07 Tue
Re: LOL! This is coming from TPTB. Who do you think insisted on it for the Beg and AdvBeg? They don't care who they alienate. They care about ID and Irish Culture. It is the parents who have twisted this into something else. An Coimissiun intends to bring ID back to where it belongs. -- Elly (Thank God, change nt soon enuf), 09:47:43 03/22/07 Thu
Why would this alienate the dancers, TC's, and judges? The only ones who would be upset are the big name dressmakers. Are they such a powerful lobby? -- JMO, 08:54:44 03/20/07 Tue
Why are you worrying about DMs & what they would say? Since when did Irish Dancing become about providing a living for seamstresses! It's no wonder AC is taking a hard look at costumes! Why should we care about putting dressmakers out of business. I keep hearing that ID isn't about the dresses. (NT) -- Apparently there are a few of you out there who think it is., 12:01:53 03/20/07 Tue
I think that the wonderful, local DMs will always have a job! They will be in demand for school dresses, alterations, etc. (NT) -- admire these talented ladies, 12:55:36 03/20/07 Tue
How callous of you! Shame! You should atleast feel a little bit sad that many of the families who rely on this income will end up going hungry if something stupid like this goes through. You'll certainly care when they're drawing welfare benefits your taxes pay for, you wretch (NT) -- horrified, 17:11:24 03/20/07 Tue
They are so talented they can do better creating wedding gowns, renaissance costumes, theatre costumes, ball gowns (NT) -- not much mark up on ID dresses, 05:43:07 03/21/07 Wed
BAAAAAAAA-HAHAHAHAHA!!! Givest thou me a break. Sure, and they'll all have to walk 17 miles in the snow, barefoot, uphill both ways if this happens. No, they won't be able to make school dresses or, if ruled, the simpler "uniform" dresses that EVERYONE will need.... (NT) -- oh, my heart bleeds!!!, 05:45:25 03/21/07 Wed
ROFLMAO (NT) -- LOLOLOL, 09:13:15 03/21/07 Wed
I can see the school dresses getting much more elaborate and solo-like. (NT) -- Aren't they heading that way already?, 06:41:10 03/21/07 Wed
But you know what? Then I'd only have to buy one "elaborate" dress - the school dress - and one plain competition dress. Now, I have to buy the absured big-money solo AND the ever-fancier and expensive school dress!! (NT) -- teams and solos, 06:54:14 03/21/07 Wed
You would think that it would go with out saying that beginner - nov. shouldn't wear solo costumes... you would think... -- mom, 07:59:02 03/20/07 Tue
Are people only in ID for the dress? Who cares what you wear, you should be in it for the love of the dance (NT) -- NYdancer, 08:17:34 03/20/07 Tue
Just curious, do you not recognize that styles change with the times in all avenues, not just ID? Cheering, skaters etc. And lets not even get started on OTHER types of dancing. Lots of customes changes required for ONE show with ballet and jazz and those kids will never wear those again! (NT) -- at least we get lots of use out of ours, 08:29:56 03/20/07 Tue
I would love to see one of the top champions choose one feis and compete in a skirt and blouse or simple velvet dress. (NT) -- and see if results reflect dancing or costume!, 09:09:00 03/20/07 Tue
I think I will have my DD start by not wearing the wig. alll natural. (NT) -- mom, 09:24:33 03/20/07 Tue
Apples and oranges- the ballet/tap recital costumes we've bought are ~$50, not $2000-$4000. Even the costumes for the competition teams are in the $100-$200 range (and are worn for several comps plus recital). Also, people love to call ID a "sport". -- if your friends jumped off a bridge..., 09:57:07 03/20/07 Tue
it is not , I spent $75 on a tutu that will never be worn again for a one time show. People love to compare their wedding dresses to the ID dresses, last time I checked I wore my dress ONCE, DD will wear her dress about 25 times this year? At that comparsion she has more then made the mileage. -- just don't think I was robbed by Phoebe, sorry- love my dress, 10:16:21 03/20/07 Tue
OK, figure skating: those teeny costumes cost as much, or more, as top designer ID dresses & worn much less, little resale. Ballroom dancing-lots more glitz (& skin), very $$$ at top competition levels, not much shelf life/resale either It's possible to be culturally connected & look great too. -- u all need Frumps anonymous, 10:22:56 03/20/07 Tue
Like I said, you can cite lots of examples of over-the-top expensive activities, and lots of reasonable priced. I vote for reasonable. -- x, 11:23:45 03/20/07 Tue
What one woman describes as "frumpy" another may consider classic or elegant. I'd prefer to wear a classic black dress vs. a gold lame gown with sequins. A dancer can look great with or without the glitz. -- tomato, tomAHto, 11:54:51 03/20/07 Tue
Um, who has a $4000 dress? I think you are now over exaggarating the "average" cost at an attempt to get your opinion across. -- most I know spend between $1500-1800., 10:45:09 03/20/07 Tue
People on these MBs report that they have paid this much. Even $2000 is A LOT of money for a child's dress. -- JMO, 11:40:48 03/20/07 Tue
If it costs more than a wedding dress or professional ballerina's tutu, it's too much for an Irish dance student no matter what age. -- Worried about poorer dance families, 16:37:59 03/20/07 Tue
The Majority of champ dresses are going for $2000 or more. For a gowing child thats $2000 a yr! The prices have gone way beyond the average family's means. Dressmakers be damned. Since when did ID become about making money for seamstresses! Now you know why AC is taking things into their own hands! (NT) -- It's about time AC did something to put a stop to it., 11:57:03 03/20/07 Tue
Re: Siobhan Moore Feis -- mk, 11:13:12 03/20/07 Tue
Our public school tells our students what to wear and I WAS 100% behind it when it was proposed! BTW you have a choice to participate in the expensive past time of ID. You don't have a choice about going to school. (NT) -- Mom who is All For Uniforms!, 11:51:37 03/20/07 Tue
Pigs will fly when everyone has to wear the SAME costume at the O. When I see the Irish and British girls wearing the same thing, then I'll believe it. Sack by Gavin? (NT) -- It's THEATER, ladies, 12:09:56 03/20/07 Tue
REDICULOUS is what this is! perhaps your DD happens to have an older sister who passed down the dress? you should have to buy this new costume? THIS is absurd, not young girls is beautiful costumes, and i will NOT stand for it! (NT) -- pissed, 12:11:32 03/20/07 Tue
The older sister can pass down an inexpensive school dress as easily as an expensive solo! Plus, if there is more than a 2 year age gap between siblings, your older dd's dress would be considered "too dated" by today's solo standards. -- happy, 12:50:59 03/20/07 Tue
It will be phased in.The next step is going to be Nov $ PW.By the time today's begs hit PC they might be looking at a uniform instead of a solo costume. There are numerous good dancers who have been priced out of Irish Dancing. This is not supposed to be for the rich. but rather for the Irish. (NT) -- BRING ON THE SIMPLE DRESSES!, 13:02:14 03/20/07 Tue
AMEN! AC-you rock! I was just reassessing whether we could afford to stay in ID. This is awesome news. (NT) -- thank-you!!, 13:15:06 03/20/07 Tue
For the Irish? Only? Puh-leeze. (NT) -- ., 13:59:15 03/20/07 Tue
Oh blow it out your shorts....you know what the poster meant. Irish Dancing shouldn't be reserved for the rich (NT) -- I hate politically correct sheeple., 16:54:56 03/20/07 Tue
That's right - those starting now have no idea what they're in for, so if they change the no-mega-solo-dress rule for THEM, they won't know what they "should" have spent. This is the best idea I have heard!! (NT) -- GO, SIMPLE DRESSES!!!, 05:50:28 03/21/07 Wed
Just what will you do about it? I don't think this supposed rule will come to pass for the PW & Prelims (as far as I'm concerned Novices belong in school dresses, and that's the rule at our school). But if it does, annoying as it may be, we'll have to comply if our dd's want to dance. (NT) -- my 2 cents, 14:51:13 03/20/07 Tue
All you whiners can go join CRN where they have no solos for most dancers, small numbers, and crappy steps. You'll just love it (NT) -- go, run! leave us be!, 17:14:52 03/20/07 Tue
That was uncalled for. The AC apparently saw a need to make ID more affordable. I think that's a better solution than asking people to leave if they can't afford it. (NT) -- ID shouldn't be elitist, 17:37:32 03/20/07 Tue
ID shouldn't be communist, either. If you don't want to pay for an expensive dress, wear what you please. Oh, but that's not faaaiiirrrr! (NT) -- .., 02:33:42 03/21/07 Wed
I agree. It should be an elitist beauty pageant. I propose we replace the stages with runways. Also, ban that annoying Irish music. Let the riff raff play soccer, and... -- May the best dress win, 04:24:45 03/21/07 Wed
How will this free up money? Uniform only for the FIRST TWO ROUNDS!!! You will still need to buy a Solo Dress... ASWELL as your Uniform! So every time you outgrow a dress you won't be just replacing one... You'll be replacing TWO!!!! (NT) -- The whole thing is obsurd!!, 04:32:29 03/21/07 Wed
I would have to assume that they are not going to make a batch of uniforms and throw them out after one use! They could be reused, handed down, and sold (as easily as school costumes, and a lot more easily than solos that don't hold their value). Also, -- x, 04:50:18 03/21/07 Wed
Well, my biggest concern with this is you'd have to buy the solo anyway JUST IN CASE you recall and do the third round. If not, you can't wear it? Unless they plan to implement for majors, but not everyday feiseanna - i.e. 3rd round for Worlds, but all 3 at a feis? (NT) -- Curious how it will all end up, 07:07:12 03/21/07 Wed
"shouldn't be communist"? This is a private org not a democratic gov't! They make the rules. As for fairness, tell me with a straight face that the one girl who can only afford a dated dress doesn't get looked down upon, is considered "out of the running" for top placings (NT) -- b/c she "isn't playing the game" correctly? its true & it stinks, 07:01:33 03/21/07 Wed
I spend more on shoes in a year than I do on dresses (and I have 4 children dancing). Maybe they could dance barefoot too! That would bring the cost right down. (NT) -- leave families to spend their money how they want and let's all get on with the dancing...., 20:10:40 03/20/07 Tue
If you spend more on shoes than dresses, you must have 4 boys dancing! (NT) -- LOL!, 20:49:15 03/20/07 Tue
we finally are able to afford a dress.. now I hope there will be someone to buy it when she outgrows it! (NT) -- yikes, 05:41:08 03/21/07 Wed
If such a rule ever does go into effect for PW through champs, it's going to bring the resale value of all these used solo dresses WAAAYYYYY down. It will be interesting to see whether such a rule will come to pass. (NT) -- mom, 08:30:02 03/21/07 Wed
I see that happening already...I think it's b/c there are so many options and styles now and they change so fast & no one wants an "old" one. The prices are already dropping (NT) -- & it's getting harder to sell, 09:14:31 03/21/07 Wed
I agree that things have gone way way out of hand with the price of these dresses, but it doesn't have to be all or nothing. I love solo dresses, but maybe they can put some kind of limit to what dressmakers can charge... -- don't know how they can enforce that though, 09:04:41 03/21/07 Wed
some kind of limit on what dressmakers can charge? Shakes head and walks away..... (NT) -- .., 11:18:46 03/21/07 Wed
Why are you shaking your head....put a limit on it and if the dressmaker charges over that then they would be considered unethical. Sha (NT) -- not so unbelivable....Irish dance world is very small, 12:08:08 03/21/07 Wed
So you expect dressmakers to make you the best damned dress ever made of real gold and charge whatever the limit is? NO way. Dressmakers should be paid for their time and effort same as anyone else--and they're sure as hell not getting rich trying to please every grumpy dance mom (NT) -- it is small...and we won't do business with YOU, 01:41:10 03/22/07 Thu
Not the previous poster, but I don't think anyone has an issue with the majority of DMs (especially the smaller, local ones). We know they get very little profit for the amount of work and hours. -- not bashing DMs, 06:54:39 03/22/07 Thu
OH PLEASE!!!!! Who in heaven's name has a dress made in real gold?!! Anyone who pays $4000 for a dress needs to have their head and their priorities examined. (NT) -- It's not the dress that wins...it is the DANCER. Don't care what anyone else says, 10:38:59 03/23/07 Fri
Re: Siobhan Moore Feis -- ID MOM, 16:13:40 03/23/07 Fri
