I stood by a new building in Japan and part of sea trials was a crash astern movement ie full ahead to full astern very interesting and a lot of vibrations, the distance run was measured until she was stopped in the water and moving astern, this was repeated but this time reducing the rpm until stopped and then going astern and increasing revs untill full was obtained.Again the distance run was measured. I can't remember times or distances but it was a fairly large reduction compared to the crash exercise.

A crash stop and astern running mainly causes cavitation on the blades and they do not bite into it unill the way has come off the ship.
