The SS. Essex Envoy
Our lady enquirer informs us that in 1925 her father, son of Ted Groom, joined this ship at Barry Dock, South Wales. Ted's own life story has now been published in a book by his granddaughter Victoria. Ted's son joined his first ship ‘The Essex Envoy’ at Barry at the tender age of 14 & three quarters! It seems that Victoria’s grandfather had signed him up for 5 years! Ted's son apparently did not get home to Lewisham - London til just short of 21!
She was a tramp steamer owned by the Essex Line. Meldrum & Swinson London (Essex Line Ltd.)

It is believed that her Captain thought to be called Churchill was later Court Marshaled for his decisions. The ship is thought to have been involved in a Mutiny off / in South Africa. I know now A BIT MORE WITH YOUR HELP than is written here and Vikki apparently knows little of the history / outcome of any such mutiny etc:

Anyone that requires our findings to assist further, please e.mail me at hernamewas.ss@tiscali.co.uk I dare not make the postings to long. ( title: Envoy, TO AVOID SPAMMERS )

Vikki has been informed of your assistance thus far and sends her best wishes and thanks. 'keep it coming please'
Any info on pos Mutiny and Captain. Thanks Keith.

"Thanks for this - this is the correct ship "Essex Envoy" as I have references to Meldrum. He was the fellow who convinced my Grandfather to sign my father up for the five years. I am very thrilled with this information. Perhaps now we can trace the Captain (I understand to be called Churchill) who was also a very 'hard man'. but then they all were in those days! Cheers and very many thanks”. Vikki
