IN ANSWER TO YOU QUESTION RE DUMIPNG OF *UNKNOWN CARGOES* THERE WAS A SMALL FLEET OF OLD COASTERS BASED AT CAIRNRYAN WIGTOWNSHIRE IN THE LATE FORTIES EARLY FIFTIES ENGAGED IN DUMPING OLD/UNWANTED MILITARY STORES FROM A STORAGE DEPO IN THE CAIRNRYAN AREA .
I WAS ON A RELATIVES FISHING BOAT BASED AT AYR IN THE EARLY FIFTIES AND WE WERE FOREVER GETTING MYSTERY BOXES IN THE BAG OF THE NET WHEN WORKINGIN THE OUTER REACHES OF THE FIRTH OF CLYDE .
WHEN I LATER WENT TO THE M.N. I WAS ON ONE OF THE ROBERTSON COASTERS /GEM LINE WITH A MATE WHO HAD BEEN ON THESE DUMPING BOATS AND ALTHOUGH THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO DUMP IN A SPECIFIED AREA IT WAS NOT ALWAYS DONE TO PLAN . EXAMPLES WERE WHEN VISIBILITY WAS POOR AND THEY WERE OUT OF SIGHT OF LAND USUALLY THE LIGHTHOUSE KEEPERS AT CORSWALL POINT AND WANTED TO GET FINISH EARLY THE STUFF WAS DUMPED ANYWERE IN THE GENERAL AREA .
HOPE THIS HELPS JOE AIKEN M.N. NO. R697955 .
I LEFT THE SEA IN 1961
