The only thing an engineer needed on the Ballylumford was a hammer to continually hit the pumps to keep them going. If you wanted to oil anything you brought your own oil with you. As for Ahead and Astern it was referred to by some skippers a wee bit forward and a wee bit back as Port and Starboard where left and right. Stop meant hitting the quay and going full astern if you got the engine to obey.No movement books ever needed,logs where for burning on the galley stove.temperatures of the engineers was the only ones ever recorded by the nurses in Kellys rest homes.David
