Linda I concur with your view that Quebec don't like the Union Jack, but the Suez crisis was around 1956 ,I know, as I was on one of the last tankers to get through, before the unlucky ones were re-routed around the cape,(some one will come up with the exact date)after Sir Anthony Eden pulled the trigger. Lester B Pearson had a flag change in the works in the early sixties(he wanted it to be the legacy he left for Canada to remember him by)and they even went public for a design, but it had to contain a maple leaf (or more) symbol, guess where all the maple trees are in Canada, you won't find many between here and the Quebec border ,so the French got appeased again. I remember all the sabre rattling in the halls of the Legion, and the threats of public disobedience when it was first suggested we change from the Red Duster, but a simple act of parlament and it was all over, and the young folk today think the Maple Leaf has always been the Canadian flag
