For one thing more than enough of Cortes shoreline is already taken up with various oyster leases and accompanying noise & activity. Contrasting to oyster harvesting, geoduck harvesting involves gas powered water pumps which blast away the sand & sediment. As well as being noisy, this method leaves the ocean floor a virtual desert. No other sea life can exist where there is geoduck harvesting. Erosion and noise are my biggest complaints plus associated garbage....every time there is a storm the beach will be littered with plastic netting debris.
And btw this has nothing to do with the food supply. Geoducks are sold for big bucks to Japan. Nobody eats these shellfish in B.C. that I know of. It's just another industry that will decimate the subtidal ecosystems around Cortes if it gets a foothold. I and many others are strongly opposed to any and all of it. We tolerate the oyster industry because it isn't so harmful but even that has grown exponentially to the point where the Gorge is filling with oyster rafts. I wouldn't buy waterfront on Cortes even if I could afford it !!!! Who wants loud people with headlights dragging boats and talking loudly 24-7 in front of their beachfront home that they pay huge property taxes on ??? I know that the Campbell gov't wans to promote the Geoduck industry but he will have a huge fight on his hands (and so will you !!!)
