• I think that there are two things he has to look at. One, core strength is so important to be able to hold leaps. The most strength comes from the core of the body, not the legs. Secondly, if his hamstrings are very tight, it is harder to straighten the leg. This has always been true for my ds. We are working on these things with various excercises, some of his friends have gone to a sports trainer for help initially. • I would say 6 months to a year, at least, could be more or less - it all depends on the kid, how much growth, and lots of other variables. Kind of like a giraffe learning how to handle all that height and legs - it takes awhile to grow into the size, and the muscles need to catch up as well. • Videotape him dancing, and let him watch his own posture. Have him practice in front of a mirror so he can see what he is doing. The arms and front lean may happen in times of rapid growth, but actually seeing it helps the dancer to fix it. Also remind him to roll his shoulders back just before he starts to dance.
