I looked at the Dayton roster this morning and saw that they have nine WPIAL players, 5 of which are freshmen. I know I've said this before but the Dukes need to keep these kids at home.

They lost their starting QB two weeks ago and their backup was pulled during the RMU game. Looks as if they have a senior WR as their starter. This kid threw 2 TDs against Bobby Mo.

It sure would be nice to beat Bucknell and Dayton who both beat RMU.

Its funny, but I feel less down after a game where we were outplayed and beat than after two games that we outplayed both Nichols state and Monmouth and gave away the game both times. We have the talent... We had the game plan... We gave away both games.

Agreed. I have this feeling that Duquesne just doesn't believe in its talent. Some teams refuse to lose. We just refused to win. We had the fire at Bucknell but it got snuffed out. This season is not over, but this team really needs to start believing in itself. Duquesne was a better team than both Nichols State and Monmouth. Maybe they can'r focus on the road.

Had a chance to watch the Monmouth game yesterday on Fox Sports Atlantic. First time that I have seen the Dukes in a few years. It looked to me that the Dukes have a lot of talent. They have a lot of speed, and I was impressed that the Dukes were able to hold their own and sometime dominate the line of scrimmage. It's a shame that the Dukes lost this game in which they thoroughly outplayed Monmouth over the last 3 quarters; hard to overcome 4 second half turnovers. It's a long season, and it's the coaching staff's responsibility to bring out the most in this talented group. The record will tell whether they succeed.

I am as confused about this situation as you are Shoey. I was able to see some of the practices this week and thought Connor looked very good, although Kevin looked good as well.
The games tell a different story. Kevin has been sacked 12 times and has 3 ints in 3 games. Alot of his balls are overthrown or high which tells me he's throwing off his back foot.
I'm not saying that Dixon would have fared any better but he did come off the bench and win the game vs Bucknell and almost did the same thing at NU if we make that field goal.
At least give the opposition something to think about!!!

TS- Thanks, I dont mean to be negative towards Rombach but if we are going to get to another level it is not going to be with a 5th year senior that we have seen the ceiling on his talent. We have two scholarship QB's (Mich St, Weber St.) guys that have alot of elgibility left. In my opinion if you are going to play a 5th year senior he had better be hands down the best QB on your team. If you lose with a 5th year QB and your other two dont get playing time........that is a double whammy to your program.

I remember how some last year wanted Dixon out and Rombach in. I realize the tools Dixon possesses and I definitely would like to see what he can do this year, a year older and hopefully wiser. The doctor has released him and he is not going to be 100% ever this year so give him some time now but keep in mind a few things: These last two games should not be on Kevin. Should he have even played against NS after that very serious concussion against Bucknell. Yes, he made some mistakes on Sat but he also made some beautiful throws. His percentage was again around 60% which is exceptional. He orchestrated some nice drives but this team has stalled in the red zone even when Dixon was in. We have a real red zone problem which the coaching staff needs to address. It was not Kevins fault that Dave Williams dropped a sure touchdown pass. He threw that ball 50-60 yards in the air and hit Williams in stride. Also, the two of them hooked up on a pass that David with his incredible athleticism almost turned into a touchdown but which resulted in a fumble and a turnover. Had he scored on those two plays and the Dukes won, we wouldn't be having this discussion. And he has not been given great protection which always ends up in turnovers. The pick six? Come on'--yes he overthrew the ball but---to quote Ken Wisnehut when James Harrison took it back for a score in the Super Bowl---something to the effect--"someone has to bring him down". The way our defense is playing if that kid was brought down when he should have been or when he was first hit, no touchdown, maybe a field goal. Every guy on the offense missed him. Those three plays could have made a huge difference in the outcome. Yes--I too would like to see Dixon (who, by the way, will have his kinks to work out and a rythm to try to establish) but Kevin Rombach is a pretty good I-AA QB. I wish he were little taller and had a little better feet when he gets in trouble but he throws a very catchable ball and has a fifth year senior brings something intangible to the table. Hell , he came back after last year--that should tell you something. No --I am not a family member or friend and quite frankly this Board has only been mildly critical of him but I just thought some perspective needs to be injected into the conversation and that is not say that he played great because he didn't. Let's all look at it objectively. On another note, cudos to the offensive line--isn't it great to have a running game? They are clicking and working together very well---Kuhns Kitna, Downey, Lehue (sp?) and Gill (and others)--now work on your pass protection. I also believe we should try to get the ball to our tight ends to mix it up a little bit--give the QB some shorter options. Our tight ends can catch and are athletic--not just blockers. And the defensive line? Wow to them and the linebackers--I never would have expected this after last year and with the change in coordinators. We might have the best group of starting LB's in the conference led by our All American candidate. Let's hope they can bring it all together and learn how to close the deal. They certainly have that potential. C'mon coaches--bring it out in them!!

Duke from the way back- Mine is not a personal attack on Rombach...........the guys name could be anything. It is an overall look at how to build a program. I personally dont believe you start a 5th year senior if he is not hands down the best QB on your team. We are starting out with fewer scholarships and trying to bulid for the future (I know we are trying to win games now). Realistically our year is next year and having 2 younger QB's sitting the bench while not getting any experience dosent get you there. It's just an opinion and in no way an attack on anyone personally. He is obviously a capable QB but again I just dont think starting a Sr. and leaving your other two on the sidelines helps in the grand (unique) scheme of what is the goal of this program.

Shoey----did not mean to blur your point which is a good one and probably the right one regarding program building. I dont even think you were very critical of him but I heard some stuff off the board that was unfair and emotionally charged and thought another perspective should be offered. I am not even saying that he played great or that a change should not at least be considered but if a character kid like that takes the blame it sould be done in the proper context and he should also be given credit for the good things he has been able to do both this year and in his career here.

This is a good bit of analysis. Romach, Dixon and Patterson all have the talent. The coaches must bring it out.

I'd start by swithing Loya back to quarterback/passing game coach. He really did a nice job developing Loebig and has a bit more experience... Neil is a great guy, but could do better switching and handling the recievers.

Always a Duke- Agreed, I dont condone that type of attack either.

Marquis- Agreed I would like to see Dixon and Patterson play. we have seen the best and worst of Connor but he has been injured. Patterson brings a whole new dimension with the run/pass threat.

Coffe- thanks, I just thought something was wrong as Connor played well at Nichols and Bucknell and when he didnt get in at Monmouth I was concerned.

The Loya idea sounds very interesting.

It is unfair to lay the blame on Kevin. He has done a fair job the past three games. That said, there is an old football adage that says if two players are even, you play the younger guys. Dixon and Patterson are the future at that position. If healthy, they have to play.
However, if Dixon is still hurting, then the staff made the right move.

Subject: Prediction for Today's Game Agasint Monmouth

Author:
Always a Duke
[Edit]

Date Posted: Saturday, September 19, 03:28:50pm

This afternoon the Dukes will face their first NEC opponent of the 2009 season. The NEC is ranked as the 24th conference out of 27 Div 1 A &AA conferences and independents by Real Time RPI. The Dukes are ranked 183; the Monmouth Hawks, 173. The strength of schedule ranking gives a slight edge to the Hawks, 186th, compared to the Dukes' 196th.

Sagarin gives the Dukes a 218 ranking and Monmouth a 209 ranking. Using Sagarin's predictor score for each team and including the home field advantage, the Dukes would be an 8 1/2 point underdog in this afternoon's game.

A lot is riding on this game for the Dukes. If the Dukes are to beat the Hawks after a tough disappointing loss to Nicholls State, they will need to carry over that stout defense shown, especially against the run, in the 4th quarter last week. The Hawks running back, Dave Sinisi, has hurt the Dukes big time in the past. Slowing him down is key. Monmouth's 2 QBs are very efficient, completing 22 of 29, throwing no interceptions, but scoring only only 2 TDs through the air. Interestingly their passing game has averaged less than half (111 yds.) of that gained by the Dukes. The Hawks have coughed up the ball three times and lost possession twice in their two games.

I think the Dukes' defense will be up to the task. It may be a close one, but the Dukes' passing and running game hopefully will both be productive. The Dukes 24, Monmouth 21.

Good sumary... If Duquesne had beat NS last week, as they certainly could and should have, they would be peged a bit higher in the Sagarin. They did outgain them in their house.

St. Francis actually scares me. sagarin has them ranked ahead of many NEC teams this week.

Oh, boy! This is a very disappointing loss, 17-10. In spite of 2 fumbles and 2 interceptions, the Dukes had the ball inside the 15 with less than a minute to go but just couldn't manage the clock to get a TD. 387 yds. for the Dukes to 278 yds. for Monmouth. Dave Sinisi has a good game for the Hawks. But even so this is a game the Dukes should have won.

Let's learn by our mistakes and get Dayton, who just beat Bobby Mo, next week!

I was able to talk to some of the players and coaches today and despite the loss on Sat. the team is still very upbeat and ready to move on. To a man they thought they should have won the game.

Akeem Moore is still in a LA hospital. He had some internal bleeding and a badly bruised liver. I was told he's done for the year. A big loss for sure.

David Williams should be fine after sustaining a stinger. He said that its sore but will be ok

I'm told that Brian Layhue (TE) sustained an injury. I don't know the severity or type but was told that Adam Gill will start.

Connor Dixon's shoulder is good, not great but might get the start this week if all goes well in practice.

The boys leave Friday morning for Monmouth.

Despite the tough loss, we may look back on this game as being the one that helped us the most. These young kids, (and we are very young), played their hearts out and proved to themselves that they can stay with anyone.
Offensively, we struggled but remember that Nicholls had 9 returning starters on defense, and alot of these kids are transfers from the likes of LSU and Ole Miss. The heavy rain in the 4th quarter didn't help us either. I didn't like the way our QBs were abused with 9 sacks but with Moore and Williams out for most of the game, Nicholls was able to tee off on us without worrying about our passing game.
Defensively, we shut down a team that likes to run the ball and does so exclusively. This should help us when we play the likes of Sunisi (Monmouth), and Russ (RMU).
I know that there are no moral victories but this may have been the strongest team we play all year and we nearly upset them. Hopefully the boys come home healthy and with an atitude to start conference play.

This certainly was a tough one to swallow but I think alot of positives can be taken from this game. First, we do have a running game. I think that McCoy and Bair did a nice job and the boys kept coming right to the end.
Consider the fact that we out gained NS 341-218, lost two of our best recievers in the first quarter, won the time of possession 34 min to 26, had a field goal blocked, had a dropped TD pass, and a fake punt that resulted in a 63 yard TD. All told, we should have won the game. Our defense was super holding NS to 7 pts and 150 total yds.
One BIG concern is at QB. Kevin fumbles 3 times, is picked once and is sacked SEVEN times! Connor fumbles once and is sacked twice, the last one on the bad shoulder. Oh well, thats football.

I have no idea how to call this game. Sagarin has the Dukes as a 15 point underdog while Real Time RPI has the game about even.

I know that Nickols State got blown out by Air Force 72-0, but the are a young team playing away and had a bunch of turnovers against a good D-1 team. They should play better at home this week.

I'm going with the RPI and predicting the Dukes in a close one.

Somehow I believe that the Dukes will have a very good game today. I don't think Nicholls State is that good this year for a well-established Div 1-AA team. I'm picking the Dukes, 28-17.

Woeful coverage of the the Dukes' game in this morning's Post-Gazette! I was unable to find anything on-line about the game in the Tribune Review. In its District College articles the past two Saturdays, the P-G seems to take a liking to covering the small colleges, such as Grove City this morning, and give one or two sentences to the Dukes and Bobby Mo. I guess the newspapers are saving up for an article when both schools will play each other at Duquesne's homecoming.

The Dukes had several opportunities to win or at least tie this game in the 4th quarter but a run-back by Nicholls St.'s punter and some fumbles by the Dukes resulted in a very hard-fought 14-7 loss. From the broadcast of the game it seemed as if the Dukes' defense got better as the game wore on. Sounds like both teams were pretty banged up.

Now, Dukes, hold your heads high, and get ready for a battle with Monmouth next Saturday.

The big jump in quality of football opponents will occur next season when the Dukes play the University of Delaware, on Sept. 18, 2010 (mistakenly reported as Sept. 11, 2010, in my earlier post). The game must be official since its now listed on the Fightin' Blue Hens' 2010 schedule. Press here for UD's 2010 schedule. The AD confirmed that the Dukes will play Dayton at Rooney Field in 2010. He was currently in negotiation with the third OOC opponent. In my opinion, if the Dukes are going to significantly upgrade next year's schedule, it will need to play a FCS team tougher than Bucknell. It will be interesting to see who that 3rd team will be.

I don't think we'll see a Div 1-A team on the Dukes' schedule, if at all, until the Dukes become one of the top 2 teams in the NE Conference and it is giving at least 30 scholarships.

I agree- Delaware is a nice step up. We are still a couple years behind Albany, but isn't it nice to even consider this in a few years rather than playing Canisius, St. Peters, etc. every year?

Go Albany- They are showing real leadership in the conference and I hope the Dukes play them as well a they did last year. That was a winnable game.

By the way- We need to PACK the stands for the Homecoming game. RMU will be bringing a ton of fans.

You're right, Coffee, about the Dukes' scheduling being a few years behind Albany's. But that's OK knowing that tougher OOC FCS opponents will be on future Dukes' schedules.

I believe that my earlier posted link to Delaware's 2010 schedule, which includes the game against the Dukes, may not have worked. I'll try again. Click here.

I think Marquis' suggestion about adding temporary bleachers for the Dukes' game with Bobby Mo on Oct. 3rd makes a lot of sense. This game will likely draw the biggest crowd of the entire season. The Dukes can get a handle on the volume of ticket sales to the game several days before the game to ensure that the bleachers are warranted.

I spoke to Julie Shepard, Director of Alumni Relations, about Homecoming recently. When discussing the football game, she said that she just received a memo from the Athletic Dept. stating that additional seating (bleachers, I presume) will be available for the home game with Bobby Mo to accommodate the anticipated larger attendance.

Always a Duke- We are going to have to start paying you for being the Duke's investigative reporter. You always come up with the information!

The "additional seating" is definately needed. The crowd just about filled all available seats at the Bucknell game. With two local rivals and Homecoming, I'm really hoping for an overflow crowd to show the nned for a bigger capacity to make the atmosphere even better.

If you build it they will come!

Dave Williams was named NEC Co-Player of the Week. We have a bunch of great recievers. I'm wondering if they are having second thoughts about moving Akem Moore back to reciever? We may need him more at DB.

Initially, I thought the same thing Coffee. David sure is the real deal and he and Connor sure have a chemistry, but the more I think about it, moving Akeem back would surely create a double team on Williams. With Bunevich likely out for the season, our wideouts will have to do the job. With Williams, Moore and Rasky as well as going no huddle from time to time, I'll take my chances with the secondary the way it is.

Tom,

I don't pretend to know the dynamics on the practice field, but I'm willing to wait and see how the defense holds up. After the spring game I was afraid of the secondary. The offense could have played pitch and catch all day. I'm hoping that the reason IS due to the big crop of talented recievers and Kevin, Conner and Sean.

We have a real nice QB situation for a few years. My only concern is Kevins (concussion)Connor(surgery cant be 100%) going into League play in three weeks. It isnt going to take too much to be at your third string QB who has never played a down heading into League play. Nichols St. and Dayton are big games but we need to make sure we are healthy at that position going into Monmouth.

Here's what was written in Duquesne's Game Notes:

"The Harrisburg, Pa. native [Rombach] completed 7-of-10 passes for 110 yards - including a 36-yard TD pass to Michael Rasky on the game's first possession - in just under a quarter of action in the season opener against Bucknell before suffering a head injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the game. He has been cleared to practice and is expected to play at Nicholls State."

In the end Coffee, you may be right. Our secondary did look a little shakey in practice and in the spring game. I'm hoping that the boys make all of the secondaries we face look shakey.
Nichols State only has 3 returnees on offense and only one with substantial playing time from a year ago. Defensively however they have 9 returnees. At least for this game, we may be better served leaving Akeem where he is.
One more thing to watch for. (A little wishful thinking) They have a terrific puter that averaged 50+ against Air Force. Perhaps David Williams will get some room to show his flash.

There has bee a lot of chatter about scheduling up over the next few years. Delaware is apparently scheduled for 2010, likely to showcase Dixon and Williams a bit. We need to crawl before we walk and walk before we run. In short, we really need to grow. Although we have a little bit of beef on our OL, Kuhns and Kitka graduate. The 2nd team OL averages 260. Our starting DT avg 236. Both Delaware and Albany can put together OLs over 300 consisting of just freshmen. I say this because unlike other sports, being pounded can have an enormous physical and mental impact on a player. It is not coincidence that Albany roared back in the 4th quarter nor that we lost the next 6 games. It will be interesting to see what Nicholl's St. has in the tank this week after their 72-0 drubbing. I am all for increasing the competiveness of our schedule but sometimes you need to be careful what you wish for..you may just get it.

Obviously, winning the first one against Bucknell was huge and makes the Nicholls State game even more important. Not only for Duquesne but for the NEC as a whole. The NEC went 3-6 last week and needs to flex its muscle a bit if we're going to move up in the eyes of the pollsters.
Our defense settled down after the first series and I thought gained confidence throughout the game. I love Totino and Scruggs side by side and thought Latimer was a stud. Ollie Phillips certainly has done a great job. The kids don't seem as confused out there the way they were at times last year.
I mentioned a few weeks back that the ace in the hole will be David Williams. Did that kid have a monster first game or what??? Also, Dixon is one hell of a quarterback. I spoke to him after the game and he said that the shoulder still is in alot of pain but is getting better. And what about Billy Bair??? 55 yrds on 9 carries.
Rasky hurt his hand on that wild on-side kick at the end of the game. He told me he'll get some x-rays and that hopefully it will be ok. Like I said, a good start.

Thank you for all the information. I only managed to attend one game last year (Dayton) which was one of the team's best performances. My one critique with Dixon was a seemingly inability to get through his reads. He through a lot of deep passes to a well covered Roberson or took off with the ball. I was wondering if the sore shoulder kept his passes shorter (more of a West Coast offense). He seems to be locked on Williams, not bad thing. I would find ways to get him the ball too with some room.

Is there a frequency change at 7:30? I stayed with it through halftime. Once it got dark I couldn't pick up WMNY.

But a great job was done by the broadcast team. Bring home a winner from New Orleans. And eat some gumbo.

Due to Federal Communications Commission regulations, most AM stations have to change their power or the direction they send their signal in at night in order to prevent interference to other stations. This is because AM signals travel much farther at night. With the exception of the St. Francis game (starting at 7 pm.), all of the Dukes' football games will likely be over before sunset. However, the FCC rule does present a problem for listening to the Dukes' basketball games on KQV-AM since most of them have a 7 p.m. start. The athletic department must continue to look for another station (FM I presume) who would be willing to broadcast the basketball games with a much clearer and stronger signal than what KQV-AM can muster.

On another matter, I attended the Labor Day Parade in Downtown Pittsburgh today and was surprised to see and hear the Duquesne Marching Band as a parade participant. The band's banner said that it was established in 2007. The band sounded pretty good, and I would guess had at least 25 to 30 members. This is not the band that played at the Buchnell game. Why they are not used for the football games is still a mystery to me. The band members were wearing T-shirts that had "Duquesne University Marching Band" (not in the official Athletic Department font) on them.

The band situation is truly ridiculous. Someone needs to mediate that situation and let the marching band play at the games. It is beyond silly.

You have to admire those students who continue to play even though the funding was cut.

I know for a fact that the band offered to do all fund raising to stay with the teams and they were denied that opportunity by the Athletic Department.

From where I was sitting I could not even hear the football band or whatever they are called.

I'm just a guest up there sitting in awe of the greatest broadcast team since Howard Cosell and Don Meredith- Alex and Chad. I try to keep my mouth shut and write an article for the Rivals site.

I also try to put out a few messages on the board, but I guess most are either there or listening on Redzone or WMNY. (They do need to add a floor for the coaches or put up some more sound proof glass I guess.)

By the way, thanks, Alex for plugging this board and the blog- The game showed we have a bit to look forward to and talk about!

It was funny actually. I was once at a Central-Gateway HS football game. It was the first game of the year a few years ago.

The Gateway punter was having a bad night. For some reason after every punt, we heard the PA announcer's editorial comments. From all "All Geez" to "That kid stinks", over the stadiums speakers. For some reason, he was not aware his comments were going out over the speakers.

Then the Central kid punted and he got off a great punt and we heard "Thats the way you punt the ball." The Central fans were cracking up.

What a great way to start the season on a perfect night for football. Unfortunately starting QB Kevin Rombach, who was putting on a pretty good show, suffered a concussion and had to leave the game. Hopefully this was of the minor variety, if there is such a thing. Connor Dixon came in and looked pretty impressive with his passing. Not bad for a sore shoulder! What receivers we have! Dave Williams and Akeem Moore were outstanding as was running back Larry ("Sunny" as opposed to "Shady") McCoy. The radio crew didn't know why Cleodis Williams was not used in the game. The defense bent a bit but didn't break. Way to go Dukes!

The Dukes next opponent, Nicholls State, got crushed by Airforce,72-0. Click here. I wonder how they will greet the Dukes next week.

Another bit of good news for Duquesne athletics is that the women's volleyball team is now 6-1 after winning three in a row at a tournament at James Madison. They play Pitt on Tuesday @ 7 pm at the Palumbo. Great job ladies!

I was relegated to watching the game on gametracker so I don't really have a feel for this game. I think we have taken a step forward. Bucknell is not one of the better teams in the Patriot League but one we haven't beaten in 5 years. That makes this a momentum builder but it is a long season. Dave Williams is a game changer every time he touches the ball. He and Dixon havea real connection (Big 33 and MSU. Rombach seemed to be playing great in limited action and I too hope for a speedy recovery. I have some concerns about the running game. If you take out Bair's 32 yd run, the backs averaged less than 2 yds/carry. Great start though..let the ride contine in Louisiana.

You should have listened online at Redzone.com. They have the game on-line.

Our offense looked good. Connor Dixon though not at 100% played when after Rombach suffered what I heard was a concussion.

Had a chance to break game open in third. First and ten on the 6 and couldnt get in and missed field goal.

Bucknell QB then ran to the DU 28. Fumbled next play and DU recovered.

Able to score at beginning of fourth quarter and game wasn't in doubt after that.

The weather should be perfect for the Dukes' opener on Saturday evening. Let's hope we pack Rooney Field with students, alumni, and fans, including a bus load or two of the Lehigh Valley Dukes. Standard Journal reports that two Bucknell starters are out with injuries. Click here for story.

I believe a win is crucial in restoring the team's confidence from last year's disappointing season, particularly with three road games following this home opener. Even though we have not been very successful in beating Bucknell in the past, I don't think this is a particularly good Bucknell team and is beatable. I'm counting on improved and sustained play by the Dukes and a 24-17 win for the Dukes. BAG THE BISON!

I agree that this game is very winnable but I said that for the last 2 years. I think a year of increased competition may help. Chemistry and cohesiveness are key. There is an interesting name on Bucknell's roster Jeremiah Young although I don't see him on the depth chart. He is from Steelton and was a Parade AA after his junior year. I believe he may have the state record for career rushing yards. They may decide to spring him as a surprise or he may not yet be ready.

Its a shame about Young. I would have liked to have seen what he can do. Sagarin has its pre-season ratings out and neither team is expected to do much. Bucnell is ranked #205 and Duquesne at #219 out of 245 teams. I lend very little credence in Sagarin at least at this point of the season but it is all we have. It's time to prove them wrong.

The two who are out are their best two players. Pasternak is a pre-season All-American who killed the Dukes last year. Nana-Sinkham was leading the Patriot League in tackles last year before he got hurt with a few games left in the season.

Mark Draskovich
OnTheBluff.com Football Analyst

Duquesne's recent football tradition has been both a blessing and a curse. Winning the now defunct MAAC Conference title so often made it a disappointing season if the team only tied for first place. The previous fourteen winning seasons in a row made last year's 3-7 season look like a gigantic failure no matter how long the NEC competition had been offering scholarships prior to Duquesne's first scholarship player since 1950. The Dukes made a habit of playing very well against one or two higher rated 1-AA teams and then mopping up on the likes of St. Peters and La Salle.

Now that the Dukes play a challenging schedule from beginning to end, they have discovered just how tiring a season can be. The Dukes have always managed to recruit a decent crop of skilled players, however, they have to discover that size and endurance matters too. Given the two year head start the rest of the NEC had in offering scholarships, we may have to be willing to concede that last season may have been the exception to the high standard and may not spell doom for the future of Duquesne Football. The silver lining to last year's disappointing season may be that we now have re-adjust expectations from the start for this young team. After the string of 14 winning seasons was ended, a winning season of any kind would actually look like dramatic progress.

According to most forecasts, finishing better than fifth in the NEC may actually exceed most expectations. The Sports Network picks the Dukes to finish 7th and the NEC Coach's Poll picks them to finish 6th.

Coach Jerry Schmitt, back for his fifth season is proud of his team's progress. "I think we got better as the year went on," said Schmitt. "Our defense was young last year and will mature."

Actually, Duquesne's best performances on the field occurred in the first half of the season if you consider the second half at Bucknell, the home win against Dayton and the near upset of Albany. The early St. Francis win and later win at Wagner were not all that impressive considering the opposition. The second half collapse at Robert Morris seemed to destroy any confidence to be contenders.

The expectations that matter most may actually come from the players on the field. The Dukes came closer than any other NEC to upsetting Albany. These players beat Dayton, yet lost to cross town rivals Robert Morris after blowing a lead. Last season's Bucknell game best showed the roller coaster Dukes to be susceptible of lacking the consistent attitude and confidence it takes to win. To win, they really do have to "believe".

Albany, incidentally just announced a 2011 game against Big East member Cincinnati. This may put the first Pitt-Duquesne game since 1939 within the realm of at least a remote possibility some day.

The Dukes open the 2009 Season this Saturday, Sept. 5 at home to Bucknell at 6:00 at Rooney Field. The game is broadcast on WMNY am 1360 and streaming on Redzone Media. Bucknell defeated Duquesne 48-42 when the two teams met last season.

The boys had practice last night at 6:30 and two things jumped out at me. Bunevich was in street clothes and didn't practice and Dixon, although taking reps is still in obvious pain.
I was told that Sean might be shutting it down for the season and that Connor's surgery isn't coming along as well as we'd hoped.
I think our depth at both positions is good but those would be two huge losses.

Also do you know who the Dukes will scrimmage another team this summer camp? If so, where and when will it be? I believe it was IUP last year.

Some early impressions from the game notes.
1.)Brunevich is not listed on the depth charts so his injury may be severe. I think there is depth with Layhue and Gill.
2.)Rombach will be the starting QB. He is certainly no step backward but I will assume Dixon is dinged.
3.)They appear to be playing a 4-3, if the depth chart is any indication.
4.)3 starters from last year have been relegated to 2nd string with Scruggs being converted to tackle.
5.)We better be very quick on defense because we certainly aren't big in the positions we should be and we seem almost too big in the positions that require speed and quickness. The DTs go 227 and 245 and yet the DE go 267 and 278. Linebackers go 220, 220 and 210 which is safety sizes in most of FBS. The secondary looks really young.

My reason for the pessimism is the tendency to keep this team too fluid. People are constantly changing positions. Last year they never had the same people playing 2 games in a row. There was a real lack of consistency as the season wore on. I see it happening again this year but hopefully I am wrong. Can someone still explain what happened with Hough last year?

Sean is out for the season with a knee injury, according to the game notes. I like the OL this year. We have some "fat boys" (I'm a former OL from the leather helmet days and use this as a term of respect) who I think are going to push people around. A freshman is starting at RG, backed up by another freshman. And Redden -- who I think will be a star on this team -- hasn't cracked the first two teams yet. Horvin Latimer has cracked the 2-deep. I think he too will be a big-time player here. Kevin's a solid QB. We're smallish but I will guess pretty quick on defense. We need a good year out of our special teams. If they can win the field position battle for us most of the time, it will help with the type of team we are putting on the field.

I guess I can't argue with the recent coaches poll that has DU projected to finish sixth in the conference. Albany and Monmouth are obviously the top teams but I think our young Dukes have closed the gap a bit and will contend and surprise some teams.
This is an awesome schedule and we should find out early how far the program has come. Bucknell from the tough Patriot League, a trip to Nichols State who routinely schedules 1A opponents, (Texas Tech in 2005, Rice in 2007, Air Force this year), Monmouth on the road and then Dayton who is picked second in the Pioneer League. Wow!!!!

Bucknell (5-6, 2-4, fifth - last season's results). Picked to finish 6th out of 7 teams in the Patriot Conference by The Sports Network:

The Bison were poised for a winning season after starting 4-2, but they dropped four straight to finish a game under .500. The 2009 schedule gives Bucknell a chance to get off to another strong start and coach Tim Landis hopes that more maturity will help his team finish better.

"The most drastic improvement you'll see is on the defensive side of the ball," Landis said. "We're going to continue to build on what we did last year."

Greg Jones (89 tackles) and Sam Nana-Sinkam (62 tackles) give the Bison a pair of athletic linebackers on a defense that returns eight starters.

The offense showed some diversity last year as it added some spread components to its option. A.J. Kizekai (1,850 all-purpose yards) is a threat as a running back and a returnman, while Shaun Pasternak (72 catches, 15.0 average, 12 TDs) emerged as one of the top receivers in FCS.

Marcello Trigg (1,445 yards of total offense, 19 combined TDs) should continue his improvement at quarterback. Keeping Trigg healthy is a key to the offense. His injuries late in the year contributed to Bucknell's late slump.

Nicholls State (3-6, 3-4, fourth - last year's results). Picked to finish 8th of 8 teams in the Southland Conference by The Sports Network:

Since 2005, Nicholls State has progressively declined with 2008 being the pinnacle. Although the team did not rattle off consecutive wins over McNeese State and Central Arkansas, coach Jay Thomas knows his young players need to step up to bring the Colonels out of their current slump.

"A lot of our young men have the potential to accomplish some great things this season, " said Thomas. "We have a lot to look forward to."

Competition between Jake Witt and LaQuintin Caston will determine the quarterback position but neither have experience.

A rushing attack by committee in 2008 propelled Nicholls State to second in the league in rushing. This season, look for Corey Buchanan (353 yards rushing) to be the top back without the flashy numbers.

Antonio Robinson (20 catches, 25.1 average, six TDs) returns as the number one wideout with big-play ability and will give either Witt or Caston a bullseye.

The defense allowed 35 points-per-game last season and returns five starters from that corps. Leading tackler and all-conference selection, linebacker Garrick Spain (60 tackles) might be the only bright spot for a unit that doesn't have much experience.

I went down to Rooney Field on Saturday. The team looked sharp. I talked to Nathan Totino and he seemed very confident about his return. He looked in excellent shape. The offense has three great QB's in the fold with Dixon, Rombaugh and Patterson. Coach Schmitt seemed impressed with every one of them. Young Patterson is getting his attention in the drills. The running back situation is stacked with talent. Williams the receiver will be a great addition since the departure of Carter and Roberson. Tight Ends in one word "BIG" and good hands..

Defense under the direction of Ollie Phillips will be something to behold. Faster this year, and the young guys have bulked up nicely. Pasodelis has added about 35 pounds of muscle. Linebackers and D-backs are going to be improved and strong....It will be a good season Dukes fans...Make sure you come down to Rooney Field..

You are right about Passodelis Alex and to think we are going to have that defensive front for two more years is scary.
Did you happen to see Bunevich???? That kid must have lived in the weight room.

I've watched a few practices this week and one kid who I think is going to be a huge impact player is David Williams. In addition to his time at WR, he's looks to be the return guy on both kickoffs and punts. Very shifty and tough to get a hold of, look for David to break a few this year.

How did the Defensive Backfield look? I know we shifted some kids back to wide reciever, but we may need to shift some back again. They didn't look good in the spring.

Its hard to tell Marquis. Alot of situation, 7 on 7, that sort of thing. I was concerned in the spring game as well until I realized that the first team was up against the second team most of the afternoon. My gut feeling is that the boys will be ok.

My impression of the RBs is that Coach Schmitt is going to have trouble finding playing time for all these kids. Williams, McCoy, Smoot, Bair all looked very good. These are some big boys back there and look to be very strong.
The QBs are taking roughly the same # of snaps. Kevin looks good. His passes are sharp when he has time but still has some trouble when pressured. Connor looks very comfortable and his balls are right on the mark but I think his shoulder is still giving him some pain. I guess time will tell.

Sorry friends. The more I see that the Dukes are tape delayed, the angrier I get. RMU vs St Francis???? Are you kidding me??
I for one have e-mailed Greg Amodio and Dave Saba (asst AD/Mwdia Relations) to voice my concerns and frustration. I think that its time for all of us on this site to do the same. A few things I touched on....

Bring the band back! It would create a football atmosphere again. You have to get the students involved. I attended every home game last year and never saw more than 200 students and usually half that many.

Fix the embarressment that is Rooney Field. I'm not asking for Bucknell's stadium or even RMU's but could we at least get something to rival St. Francis??? If we don't take football seriously, how can we expect anyone else to?

(Saba) Get on the Post-Gazette, Trib, FSN, Comcast and stay on them. A little advertising wouldn't hurt either. Invite them down to camp, create a press box for them, let them talk to the hometown boys. Anything would be an improvement over whats going on now.

Sorry friends....I had to vent a little.

Tom,

You hit on many things that have been big issues on this board. The University seems to have been more concerned with the sight line of the prison than building just a few more rows onto the field. They need to see Field of Dreams to see that they need to build an atmosphere to get fans to the game. I went to the RMU game last year and their stadium, tailgating, press box and band put us to shame. I'm going to try to make the St. Francis game to see their new field too.

Unfortunately, all of these things have a direct impact on recruiting and fan support. Duquesne is the better university academically and by tradition, but is being upstaged.

Here's the response I received from Dave Saba regarding the delayed broadcast of the Duquesne-Monmouth game:

"I was told by the NEC that FSN Pittsburgh has a contractual commitment to another league that afternoon (I know they have agreements with both the Big XII & Pac-10 among others) ... there is a lot of competition and not much available air time on college football Saturdays ... more and more, the FSN regional affiliates have gotten further and further away from local broadcasts ... they are showing more national inventory ... it is a corporate decision. Hopefully you can catch the game live on Fox College Sports.

"As for an independent broadcast of Duquesne/Robert Morris, it would cost in the neighborhood of $20,000+ to originate a telecast. It is a price FSN Pittsburgh must feel is not cost-effective."

While getting at least one of the Dukes' football games on TV is good (particularly an away game), airing its broadcast in the Pittsburgh market on a delayed basis is disappointing. I'm surprised that FSN-Pittsburgh wouldn't be interested in broadcasting the Dukes-Bobby Mo game independent of the NEC's TV schedule. That game would generate the most interest locally of any NEC games.

By the way, I can't recall a Duquesne Homecoming game with a more intense and perhaps bitter rival than this season's game with Robert Morris. Hopefully Rooney Field will have an overflow crowd, lending support to the oft posted (on this forum) need for expansion of the field's seating capacity.

Hey- Neat Forum! I never visited before, but am a Duquesne Alum and played years ago for the club team. I agree- there are enough Duquesne and RMU alums to make it a no-brainer to televise the game. You'd think there would be enough sponsors.

At least its not during the Steeler game. I think they are in Chicago on the 20th playing at 4:15.
Anyway, a little coverage is better than none at all. Lets hope that we absolutely pound RMU, create a real hometown rivalry and force the media to cover the game in the future. I'm also hoping that the local papers get on board. Some of the high school games get more ink!

I would be interested on everyones thoughts about what to expect this year. I for one am expecting a big move forward. My take....
Offense: The offensive line should be very good. A mass of humanity with two all conference members in Kuhns and Dunn. Hopefully, Bunevich will be good to go but if not, I think Adam Gill at 6'3" and 260-270 will be solid.
The quarterback situation is very good. Dixon's shoulder is healed and should be the starter again. I like his size, speed and arm strength when healthy. Rombach as he has proven can lead this team as well.
I know we lost two, very fine WRs in Alex and Conrad but this years group should be awesome. With Moore, Williams, Rasky and Spragg, look for alot of 4 WR sets. In addition, don't be surprised to see the no huddle this year.
The RB position will be a work in progress but should be improved from last year.

As usual- spot on Tom. You have a good handle on the talent levels. I've always believed Duquesen hasn't had a quality big back with speed since Josh Rue. We really need to realize that along with a heavier line, we need a heavier running back.

I'm more concerned about the Duke's consistancy in attitude and preparation. That is the missing piece to this team. Why else could we have almost beat Albany, beat Dayton and then lost to Bryant, RMU, etc.? Why else could we be blown away in the first half against Bucknell and then dominate the second?

The success for this team has more to do with attitude than anything else.

There is no question that this team needs to learn HOW to win. I don't think it was a case of conditioning either. I know its a cliche, but for this team it all starts on the OL and I like what I see so far. Last year we were out-muscled from time to time which slowed our running game and got our QBs clobbered. This team may be the fastest we've seen in a while too so if we control the line of scrimmage, we're going to see the boys putting up BIG numbers.

Ollie Phillips has his work cut out for him. With only one senior starter, this group may be a year away from being very special. There is no question that we need Totino in there. Lets hope he's able to go. There seems to be some healthy competition with Bangura and Gardiner which is good to see. I love Burno and Scruggs on the ends and our LBs (with Totino) should be very good. Losing Moore in the secondary is a concern but with the pressure put on by the front seven, hopefully they won't be exposed too much. They kind of got picked apart in the spring game.

Not that things are finalized for the season, but Leigh Bodden is currently listed as the starter at right CB for New England. If he didn't play for the Steelers or come to town once a year as with the Brownies, this ain't a bad team to start for! Certainly better than the Lions. Why would the worst team in the league release their third leading tackler and leader in passes defended?
