Hey, anyone hear how practise is going? I love that webcam but I really can't see anybody. Field looks good though.
Date Posted:Tuesday, August 05, 10:15:39pm
The field does look good on the webcam! I haven't been to the practices, but I know some of the coaches are very impressed with the new recruits.
Date Posted:Wednesday, August 06, 01:37:38pm
I work with one of the assistant coaches who had played for the Dukes a few years back. I don't think he would want me singling specific names on this board. His comments were that the overall talent level of the team (size, speed, skill) is considerably higher than in years past. It sounds a bit odd, but is sounded to me that he was almost missing the old days when the team did so much with so little. He was sad that the Dukes will, for the first time have to make cuts from the team due to the added scholarship recruits and the new level of competition.
Date Posted:Wednesday, August 06, 11:49:56am
looks like some people are watching on the sidelines. The Trib reported that moral is high among the team and that the coaches have been pleased- especially with the new recruits. GO DUKES!!!!

Coffee:
Did Loya say who he thought was standing out at the QB position(I know its early, but ive been told that Rombach is looking good)?
Any word on which recruits might make an immediate impact? In the newspaper the only new guy they mentioned was Dixon. Noted that Williams looks to take over the RB spot despite the hype over the 2 new guys...
Date Posted:Thursday, August 07, 06:16:38pm
Saw some of the practice today. Looks like Coach is putting them through their paces. Both QBs looked very sharp. Nice balls, good mechanics. I didn't realize how big Dixon is. He sure is agile and VERY fast. Kevin looked very composed as well.
Date Posted:Friday, August 08, 09:52:17pm
Its really hard to see who stands out until they put on the pads tomorrow. Some folks are already banged up a bit.
Lots of positions open to competition. Don't count anybody out yet- Rambaugh, Dixon and Paterson all look good.
Bair looks fast but is pretty light at this level. It will be interesting to see where Scruggs ends up. I still think Bair and Scruggs would be a great backfield, but there are others in the picture too.
The team likes the new turf.
I don't know what time yet, but there should be a scrimmage this Saturday.
Date Posted:Friday, August 08, 01:51:43pm
Kitty Kat Duke,
I didn't get or ask for specific names. (I'd make a lousy reporter) It didn't sound like anything was serious. The comment was "lots of the ususal pulls and strains from the first couple days of practice".
Actually its a bit awkward asking for too many specifics when your not sure what is being released as the official line.
Date Posted:Friday, August 08, 09:52:17pm
K.K.D., I'm pretty psyched too- New conference, field renovations, scholarship players. With the other sports getting better its a good time to be a Dukes fan. I've been to a few games but this is the first time I've bought season tickets. C.

getting THREE of the best in WPIAL's from 2005. It's my understanding that not only are the Duke's getting Connor Dixon, (PA Player of the Year). They are also getting Adam Gill (6'3", 255),TE from Lafayette, a kid that was a three sport athlete in high school with incredible hands and power, and Tyler Scruggs, (6'2", 235), RB,LB from WVU who runs over people and hits like a freight train. It's great to see the program attracting some of these WPIAL standouts.
Date Posted:Monday, July 28, 06:04:17pm
I remember seeing them play ball in high school. Dixon was incredible with his speed and poise. I think he ran a 4.4 40 at MSU. Scruggs is all power and will be an awesome player on either side of the ball.
Date Posted:Wednesday, July 30, 09:27:16am
Gill has to sit out a year because of transferring from Layfayette, but Scruggs will be able to play this year. He just finalized enrollment this week so he should be on the next updated roster. I saw him on campus Mon. working out with Connor Dixon.
Date Posted:Wednesday, July 30, 03:02:15pm
I believe that Dixon and Scruggs are comming in from 1-A (BCS) to 1-AA (FCS) and can play this year. Gill is comming from 1-AA and must sit a year. NCAA lets you play if you transfer down, but not laterally. Having Scruggs will be like having another Josh Rue who signed with the Phoenix Cardinals for a few years. It also lets Hough go back to playing linebacker.
I'm pumped up- New stadium, radio contract, scholarship league. It looks like a program!! Bring on Pitt! Or at least Temple, Akron, Kent State, Buffalo or Youngstown State!
Date Posted:Wednesday, July 30, 05:28:56pm
I too join in Ol' Duke's excitement for the upcoming football season. In the past I would attend three or four games a season as my schedule allowed. This season I ordered season tickets along with my buddy. Note that the seats in the center section (immediately in front of the press box) are the only ones with backs. They are the same price as the remaining bench seats. $8 a game and $40 for the season.
Date Posted:Tuesday, July 29, 12:21:32pm
I was really into South Park football when those guys played there! So happy the "Burgh" is getting them back. Should be an exciting year at the Bluff.
Date Posted:Monday, August 04, 10:09:51am
Personally, I think Scruggs was a better football player and that is saying something considering he got a scholarship to play college baseball. Time will tell of course but I do know that a number of D1 football programs were interested in Scruggs but backed off when baseball took over.
Date Posted:Monday, August 04, 11:00:41am
Heard from a reliable source that all three are delighted to be back in Pittsburgh and happy to be at the BLUFF. Also, they are as humble as they are talented. None of them expects to just move into any position this season.
Date Posted:Monday, August 04, 01:58:32pm
I see alot of hype about the three guys from WPIAL 2005 team but if they were that good what happened at their other schools to not get PT and transfer? MSU has had QB issues and a plaeyr that is 6'5" 4.4. should of cracked the lineup.
Date Posted:Monday, August 04, 02:54:08pm
Dixon was recruited for a spread offense. When John L Smith was fired, the new coach implemented a power offense that limited Dixon's options. Still, in his only head to head match-up with Brian Hoyer, Dixon led the Green Team to a 21-8 thumping of the White Team (1st Team). It wasn't long after that the shoulder was found to need surgery. Check out this link from the Lansing paper.

I'm a bit new to Duquesne but when was the last time the Dukes had 2 2,000 yd rushers on the same team. The ball hasn't been snapped yet but there is a chance that thunder and lightening may be in the forecast with Scruggs (6-2, 235 and Bair (5-10, 205). We certainly looked stacked at the skill positions but as we all know it will depend on line play to see how far they can go.
Date Posted:Saturday, August 02, 05:45:06pm
Season Tickets are available for just $40. Call 412-232-DUKE. They still have some tickets in front of the press box left that will have seat backs rather than bleacher seats. The new field improvements give us a great opportunity.
It would be nice to put together a package to encourage more season ticket sales that would include a reduced rate parking pass. A season ticket holder room set up in Mellon Hall or at the Union overlooking the field with some snacks and beverages before the game and at the half would be a nice touch. This would be a good fund raiser if one of the campus clubs or organaizations or the Alumni Association would sponsor it. The Alumni Association did great job putting together a gathering before the Pitt/Duquesne game during the basketball season. Time to start building some traditions and excitement to sell out every new seat and prove that more should have been built!
Date Posted:Saturday, August 02, 02:34:37pm
I like your suggestion about a pre-game or half-time DU-sponsored get together of the season ticket holders. Have you passed this idea onto the Athletic Dept.? (You can't be certain that they read this forum.) Another suggestion might involve a get together for the Dukes fans prior to the Bobby Mo game (at a nearby restaurant or in the parking lot with Robert Morris' OK) or at just outside of Joe Walton Stadium at half time. Also I would expect that the Duquesne Ticket Office will get an allotment of tickets for this game.
By the way, it seems likely that Bobby Mo will be the biggest rival for the Dukes in the NEC. Since such rivalry games - You can't get much more of a backyard brawl than this one - are played at the end of the season, I would guess that the NEC will adjust the schedule to allow that to happen for next season at Rooney Field.
Date Posted:Saturday, August 02, 05:45:06pm
No, I didn't send the idea to the Athletic Dept. or the Alumni Association yet.
There have been a large number of posts to this site suggesting that the Robert Morris game be moved to the end during "rivalries" week. I agree- it could mean the conferece championship some year.
with that, here is my prediction for this years seasons results
9/6 Bucknell LOSS
9/20 St. Francis WIN - But closer than you would think
9/27 Dayton LOSS
10/4 Albany LOSS - BIG
10/11 Robert Morris - ???
10/18 CCSU - LOSS
10/25 Sacred Heart - ???
11/1 Bryant - LOSS
11/8 Wagner - ???
11/15 Monmouth - LOSS
Date Posted:Wednesday, July 30, 09:04:39pm
That's a pretty gloomy forcast. 1-9 at worst to 4-6 at best?? Here is my best guess.
Bucknell W
St. Francis W
Dayton L
Albany L
Robert Morris W
CCSU W
Sacred Heart W
Bryant W
Wagner W
Monmouth L
I didn't know much about Bryant- They lost at Stony Brook, Bentley and Southern Conn and had close games with American International, Assumption, Pace and CW Post. I think the Dukes can beat them and are due to finally win the close games we've been having against the Patriot League by beating Bucknell. I say 7-3. I think back to back games against Albany and Dayton will be tough, but we may split them and go 8-2, but will stick with 7-3.
I'd like to see 11 games in the future. Georgetown has an open date at the end of the season.
Date Posted:Wednesday, July 30, 09:30:16pm
Last year CCSU was playing Western Michigan while we were play Frostburg State....
These NEC teams are several years ahead of us. This was evident in the past few years. The Sacred Hearts have caught up which was proven in how close the past 2 years scores have been. St Francis was even a struggle last year. Yes, the Dukes have made a lot of progress, but their edge over the other NEC schools has been closed and have been passed...
Love the respect for Dayton. Your original post you posted Coffee had them as a W, glad you made the change :)
Date Posted:Thursday, July 31, 12:47:02am
While your gloomy predictions are your opinion, I note that Lindy's Football Magazine recently picked the Dukes to finish 2nd to Albany in the NEC. Albany plays 4 teams from the Colonial Athletic Association. I note that it plays the Fightin' Blue Hens of U of Delaware (lost in last year's Div 1-AA championship game) in Newark, DE the week before they play the Dukes at Rooney Field. Perhaps their tough non-conference schedule may soften them a bit for the Dukes. By the way, the Dayton team will not likely be as strong as last year's team since it lost quite a few players through graduation.
Date Posted:Thursday, July 31, 09:40:50am
I always smirk when I read these preview magazines. Didn't they have La Salle in the d1aa top 25 two years ago or so?
Didn't one of those guys rate Scott Knapp as a potential NFL camp attendee this offseason?
Their budgets are obviously limited for d1aa coverage....2nd place in year #1 is out of the question. 3 years from now could be a different story...
Date Posted:Thursday, July 31, 02:41:34pm
I guess I failed to see any support for your claim that all of the NEC teams are now ahead of the Dukes. Having not seen your previous pre-season predictions, I'm not sure that you were any more successful from the unidentified magazines you belittled for errors in their pre-season predictions. Perhaps you hadn't considered that in the past five years (2003-2007) the Dukes are 9-1 against NEC teams, including a victory over Monmouth in the 2003 ECAC Classic. Last year the Dukes were 3-0 against NEC teams, and this occurred in the NEC's 2nd year of granting athletic scholarships. While Lindy Magazine's prediction of a 2nd place finish for the Dukes in their inaugural NEC season may be a slight reach, it seems more reasonable than your tale of woe.
Date Posted:Thursday, July 31, 09:09:20pm
By my calculation they were 3-1 against the NEC last year...
Sacred Heart - won by a td
St Francis PA - won by a td
Robert Morris - won by a fg
Monmouth - lost by 11
Not a single one of the wins against the NECs on their OOC schedule finished the year with votes in the Sports Network mid major top 10.(even monmouth failed to accumulate a large amount points)
The gap has narrowed. The Dukes have failed to play the top level tiers consistantly in the past few years. The Albanys, Stony Brooks(back in the day), Monmouths, and CCSU's. Yes, you can say that the Dukes have such and such a record against the NEC, but what teams ahve they played? What were the scores 4 years ago against the 2nd tier of the NEC? What were they the past 2 years?
Who is your starting QB BTW? I am going w/ Rombach...
Date Posted:Thursday, July 31, 11:53:51pm
You seem set in your mind that the Dukes forgot how to play and the rest of the NEC is ready to move south to join the SEC. I'll just state that the Dukes will not have a losing record this year given the talent they brought in and have comming back. They will be challanged by Bucknell, Albany, Dayton, Robert Morris and Monmouth, but can win against any of them. The biggest difference this year should be a better running game to set up the passing.
Rombaugh should have the job until he losses it unless either Paterson or Dixon have a monster camp.
By the way, just because Albany plays Delaware, doesn't put them on their level yet and just because the classless pukes at St. Peters cancelled so late in the year doesn't mean we played a D-II schedule.
Date Posted:Friday, August 01, 03:10:34pm
I tend to agree with Doug about the Dukes' upcoming season. Note that the MAAC and the NEC were the last and second to last Div 1 conferences, respectively, according the the final Jeff Saragin ratings for the 2007. The Dukes' move one step up to the NEC will no doubt provide stiffer competition but unlikely resulting in a loosing season.
Albany plays its first 5 games on the road: U Mass, Hofstra, New Hampshire, Delaware (all from the Colonial Athletic Conf.), and Duquesne. Both U Mass and Delaware have been picked to finish as top 10 teams in several pre-season poles for Div 1-AA. It would appear that Albany's non-conference schedule is the most demanding of any in the NEC. While playing that quality of competition can make a team tougher, it can also wear you down and possibly result in several injured players. The Dukes may be playing Albany (probably the favorite to win the NEC) when they are at their weariest at Rooney Field. However, note that in September 2006 Albany upset The Fighin' Blue Hens 17-10 in Delaware's stadium.

Alex Panarmious (sp) was working on a radio deal with either AM 1320 or AM 1360. I'm not sure how he did. He was requesting that the Duquesne faithful contact both radio stations to lobby them to carry the Duquesne Games. They hould benefit from having an educated group of alumni tune in each week. I did send a few e-mails. I'm re-posting their contact info. from an earlier string from a few months back. I'm sure Alex could use the support.

I have been away from this site for some time do to many countless work hours. however i was very pleased to read about many new improvements on the stadium. it seems this moved to the NEC sparked a much new and need attitude about the football program.
also, i am happy to see transfers from other schools.
-Big time QB Connor Dixon should push for playing time early. He has an extreamly strong arm and will be a NFL catch in the long run.
-Former Cincinnati commiment Anthony Rhoads adds a new breed of talent to their LB chart. With his size and speed he should push for all america honors.
-Lineman Ryan Dunn has the tools to be a great cartch forthem. this kid just gets the jobs done and will add an attitude to the O-ine which is needed.
-QB Sean Patterson should compete this year but do to talent around him will learn alot this year and will be a keeper down the road.
With these additions it will be interesting to see where this team winds up this year.

An article from the Asbury Park Press posted to Don Hansen's Football Gazette has the NEC presidents approving an increase to 40 football scholarships and perhaps beyond. Details at http://www.donhansen.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1910
[> Subject: When Duquesne decided to offer scholarships for FB, Title IX required it to increase women's athletic scholarships. NEC's decision to go up to 40 scholarships for FB also will trigger Title IX. I'm suggesting that Duquesne consider adding women's field hockey or golf as recipients of new scholarships.

Duquesne PK Mark Troyan has been named a Preseason 2nd Team All-American by CDS(Consensus Draft Services). Troyan will be this years Bruce Hocker in that all NFL scouts will be at practice/games to see him play, but like Hocker, will not go any further than Duquesne. Yet, this won't be a bad thing for Mark as he is planning to continue his education on to Law school, unlike Hocker who failed to finish his undergraduate academic career at Duquesne. As a close friend of the Troyan family, I wish Mark all the best in this years season and congratulate him for representing Ford City as well as he has thus far in his career.
Additionally, DB Aaron Strader was named to the 2nd team. OL Steven Kuhns was named honorable mention. DL Mykol Gardiner was also named to the honorable mention as well, even though I think this kid is soft and will be sitting on the bench this year with scholly players on campus.
This should be an interesting competition which also may include Patterson from Toledo. Three very solid players here. I hope all the positions hd this much depth and that there is no controvercy over who plays.
Date Posted:Saturday, June 28, 11:59:15am
Coffee- You missed the best part of the article- Dukes are ranked #5 in the country in having the best depth at QB. They mention Knapp who I think left, but they don't mention Patterson.

Dixon is a great kid with a tremendous upside. Reports are that his shoulder surgury was done by one of the best in the the country. Go Dukes!
The NEC is taking on some of the better teams in the FCS (I-AA) in UMass, Hofstra, Delaware, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, North Dkota State, Maine, Coastal Carolina, Bucknell and VMI.
This will not be a "Mid Major" conference for long if the NEC can step up and play respectably. The days of blowing out the St. Peters Peacocks and others that should have been D-III may be gone for good!
Date Posted:Saturday, June 28, 09:57:59am
My only complaint it that we only play 10 games. We need one more against a non mid major to qualify for a potential tournament invite. We should play 11 anyway.
Date Posted:Saturday, June 28, 10:46:51am
Holy Cross has an open date on 9/13, bu they play 12 games. Dukes may not have many options. A team like Duquesne is hard to schedule. They are technicaly a mid-major always have the potential to beat a higher rated team. A no win for a bigger team. No deal if they win but could easily lose.

Interesting to see what happens to our former players and what a small world it is. I have a friend who works at Moravian College in Bethlehem who was telling me how the athletic department are excited that Phil Polony and Jeremy McCullough have both joined the coaching staff for the football team. The disbanded Lehigh Valley Dukes are in the process of starting up again and organizing some tailgates. Unfortunately we have to drop the word Dukes and add Greyhounds. We'll miss all you guys up there in The Burgh but with the price of gas being what it is the 10 block walk to Moravian's stadium sure seems like a better deal than the 600 mile round trip to Pittsburgh.

looks like Duquesne football is on the rise. Hats off to Jerry Schmitt and his crew to land 2 big time transfers this off season. Anthony Rhoades (Arizona JC) and Connor Dixon (Michigan State).
Some info about the two:
Cnnor.Dixon
Ranked among the nation's top quarterbacks by Rivals.com (No. 17) and Scouts, Inc. (No. 37) . . . rated among Pennsylvania's top 30 seniors by Rivals.com (No. 30) . . . Associated Press Class AA all-state selection as a senior . . . named AP Class AA Player of the Year. As a senior he was selected to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Fabulous 22, the MSASports Elite 11 team and the Tribune-Review's Terrific 25. Held offers from Pitt, Wake Forest, Boston College and Michigan State.
Anthony.Rhoades
Named first team Class AAA All-State by the Associated Press ... redshirted this past season at Arizona Western (junior) College ... was ranked as the No. 32 player in Pennsylvania by Keystone Recruiting ... tabbed as the No. 4 linebacker in Pennsylvania and No. 1 in Southeastern Pa. by The Associated Press ... two-time Philadelphia Daily News All-City and All-Catholic pick. Held offers from West Virginia, Cincinnati, Rutgers, Michigan State and Syracuse.
Cannot wait to see what this season and more brings to the Bluff.
There seems to be more room on top of the stands for more rows than the 9 shown. It also looks like they are building closer to the end zone than the original drawings. The original pics look like they stopped the bleechers at the 20's.
I'd be nice to show the work on a web cam for us out of towners.

Go PENS!-- Good luck to our new neighbor next to the Palumbo Center!! It would be great if the Dukes could play some of their bigger BB games at the new arena (City Game?). Also, it would be great if the Duke could work a deal with the Pens to let our hockey team to play there too in exchange for some parking concessions. Tne hockey team should go NCAA. I RMU can, the Dukes can too. It would show a good investment in local hockey by the Pens. Malone may not be the only local player out there. It would be easy scouting for the Pens scouts to see some college talent playing the Dukes at their own arena.
Date Posted:Monday, May 19, 04:00:44pm
The Dukes could easily add women's Softball and/or Golf if the decide to add men's hockey to keep in line with Title 9. Ditto to GO PENS!! Pittsburgh is a hockey town and changing the Dukes club team to NCAA would be a great move if we can play at the new arena! Pitt should make the move too and we'd have some good "city" hockey games.
Date Posted:Monday, May 19, 06:50:17pm
Hockey is a pretty expensive sport to get ice time at a major arena. Even if the Dukes can get some or all games at the new arena, they may need to keep practice ice time elsewhere unless the Pens decide to take a real interest in their new neighbors like the Rooneys did with the building of Ronney Field. '83 may have something in offering a real asset in our parking garages that are more availale in the evenings. Can you imagine how many students will be late when there is a "Hockey Night in Pittsburgh"? LETS GO PENS!!!!!

Their site hasn't recorded a cotract signing yet, but does list some undrafted contracts.

Addendum:
As a result of the NCAA Board of Directors approval of a new budget that allows for the expansion of the Division I Football Championship Subdivision post-season bracket, the Northeast Conference will gain automatic access into the Division I Football Championship beginning in 2010. NEC Football is also eligible for automatic qualification into the championship bracket during the 2008 and 2009 seasons if its champion meets specifications of the bridge program.
The recently-approved budget contained a proposal from the Division I Football Championship Committee calling for an increase in the number of FCS playoff participants to 20, a 25 percent rise from its current 16-team format. The NEC will acquire one of the four added berths and be guaranteed an opportunity to play for the 2010 FCS Championship.
I was a bit disappointed since some earlier articles indicated that the NEC would be elligible sooner. There is no reason why the club couldn't be opened up sooner. The sooner it is opened the more progress the NEC and others left out towrds equitey with the other FCS (1-AA) programs.

This "compromise" to the NEC and others that allows entry earlier really is not much of a deal-
The Division I playoff committee adopted changes in the selection process that will guarantee entry into the postseason for any conference champion that wins at least eight games against Division I opponents, wins two non-conference games against teams from auto-bid leagues and ranks 16th or higher in an average of the Sports Network top-25 poll, the coaches poll and the Gridiron Power index (GPI) computer ranking.
They really should be in simply by ranking in the top 16. The Dukes had a much better chance to qualify in the weaker MAAC since they had more games to play out of conference. This year they play Dayton. They are a much better team than Holy Cross was when we played them last, but they are not from a playoff conference.

I don't think the Dukes could qualify this year since they only have one game against a playoff league (Bucknell). Penn, which was a strong FCS team when the Duke played them would not have helped either since the Ivy League doesn't participate either. Wins against Bucknell, Dayton, Albany and Monmouth this year should be considered quality wins.

Has any "Mid-Major" ever been ranked in the top 16? I know that the Dukes were close a few years back before they lost to Albany in the windy slush. They may have had the highest ranking ever. I'd love to drop the "Mid-Major" name when the NEC goes scholarship.
