Thanks so much for the nomination Coffee. I think that a lot of the posts this year from all of the contributors were insightful and hopeful. Except for a few bad apples and a few hotheads that seem to enjoy causing this forum grief, it was a fun year.
As for the Monmouth game, I think it was brutally obvious that we have to shore up our line play and without sounding like too much of a "homer" as I was called earlier in the year, we have to recruit the WPIAL area hard. I still believe that as a whole, WPIAL football is the best in the country. There are a lot of VERY good ballplayers right in our own backyard that could propel this program into an elite one very quickly. I'm certainly not saying that we should forget Ohio or Maryland, but our strength will be keeping our local boys home. You only have to look at the ones playing already for proof. Dixon, Hough, Kikta, Moore, Oparinozie, Rasky, Scruggs and Totino to name a few.
I had a chance to meet David and Brian Williams (Gateway)at the game and found that David, a wideout at Michigan State and Big 33 MVP is transfering here. His little brother is still on the fence.
Anyway, thanks again for the nomination and listening to my rambling. I would like to thank KKD as well for her positive attitude. She'll get her reward in 2010 if not sooner. Go Dukes!

S.T.- I'm glad you mentioned KKD. You were reading my mind since it was very hard to determine which of the two of you to choose. She has been a wonderful contributer to the board and shows class with each of her posts. She came to the only game I missed this year and I would have loved to meet her. She knows her stuff and is a true blue and red Duke Fan!

Thanks ST and Coffee for the kind thoughts. You guys have both been great fan commentators with insightful thoughts. It has been a difficult season for all of us, but let's keep in mind it has been alot harder for our young team. Challenges for both the old and new players. I look for steady improvement over the next few years with team growth and increased fan support. Thanks too, to all those senior dukes for their efforts this year. GO DUKES!

Subject: NEC Moves up Again

The NEC has passed up another 1-AA conference (the Mid Eastern).
1- 12 COLONIAL (AA)= 62.15 61.70
-- 13 SUN BELT (A) = 60.66 60.0
2- 14 SOUTHERN (AA)= 59.26 58.66
3- 15 BIG SKY (AA)= 53.67 53.58
4- 16 GREAT WEST (AA)= 50.31 50.93
5- 17 MISSOURI VALLEY (AA)= 50.31 49.13
6- 18 SOUTHLAND (AA)= 49.47 49.86
7- 19 IVY LEAGUE (AA)= 49.09 48.73
8- 20 PATRIOT LEAGUE (AA)= 48.82 48.06
9- 21 BIG SOUTH (AA)= 46.51 46.92
10- 22 OHIO VALLEY (AA)= 42.99 43.14
11- 23 NORTHEAST (AA)= 38.71 38.31
12- 24 MID-EASTERN (AA)= 38.07 37.86
13- 25 PIONEER (AA)= 35.00 34.43
14- 26 SOUTHWESTERN (AA)= 30.43 31.25
15- 27 I-AA INDEPENDENTS (AA)= 29.81 29.49
They now rank as #11 of 15 for 1-AA or 23 of 27 for all Division 1. The MAAC was rarely out of the cellar and the NEC was usually next to them. With a couple of more years of scholarships, they should more than earn a play off berth. I believe both the Mid-Eastern and the Southwestern have an automatic berth. With progress as it has been, they could pass the Ohio Valley Conference next year. Once past them, the NEC should be able to hold its own with any conference but the CAA which is ahead of some 1-A conferences.

I think that the NEC will settle in any where between as high as #4 or 5 during a good year and #9 on a bad year once the scholarships are established and take hold. There are three variables that all teams must address. Scholarships/recruiting, hiring good coaches and building a good stadium with atmosphere.
We are lacking big time on the third. There is no way we have even enough seats for the 2200 that we post as Rooney's capacity and the "band" and tailgate area needs to be a real band and a real tailgate area and not a few picnic tables... Pittsburghers know how to tailgate- Block off Bluff Street on game days!!!

I is my biggest hope as a Duquesne and a hockey fan to have the Dukes start an NCAA team and play across the street at the Pens new arena. The Pens could scout out some visiting college talent, so both would benefit.
The women could add softball or golf to balance out Title 9. Neither would be very expensive.
Pittsburgh is a hockey town! Lets Play!!

The A-10 needs to get their heads together to re-start a football conference. Charlotte's Board just voted to start a program. If Duquesne, Dayton, Fordham, Charlotte, RI, and Richmond could get together, the'd have the needed 6 for a conference. UMASS may go 1-A and has a better chance at supporting a D-1 team than Temple. Marist would be a good add as would Old Dominion who is thinking of a team. LaSalle dropped citing lack of teams to schedule just when they build a nice stadium. This would change it for them. I'm sure that there would be a few more to consider. There are rumors that the CAA may split.
But- We need a few seats added even if we are happy staying in the NEC- If you build it they will come. No kid of great worth will come to play at a field that is 1/5 the size of his high school field.

Old Dominion is going to compete in the CAA in 2010 I believe. There is a discussion about this on the A10 board but I don't think it is likely. It just isn't worth the amount of money that it costs. As far as an arena to support the games, I simply don't think you can build one big enough on Duquesne's campus. The area is just not large enough. I still think that the South Side stadium is the natural choice if we were to ever elevate our football program. At least the stadium is fairly large, and they could add Duquesne signs all over the arena to give it a college feel.

Well not what we had hoped for but I think even God was happy this season is over. The sun came out shortly before the game end!
As the radio announcers said ... it's a young team who is experiencing growing pains. We have to hope that the off season will bring needed practice, conditioning, recruiting, and additional team unity.
I will miss those great senior boys and I wish them the best of luck in the future! Go Dukes.

Wagner is 1-4 in conference, as are the Dukes. The Dukes need to get their heads together and their confidence back for more reasons than salvaging some respect for this year. It will have a lasting effect of recruiting and for confidence going into next year. Young egos are fragile. This season could have been better, but we can still salvage a bit of pride and set off season morale.
Go Dukes!

Agreed- The Wagner game is winnable- Sagarin has the Dukes favored by 3 with Wagner being the home team.
Sagarin also has the NEC ready to move up another slot in conference rankings. With a few more years of scholarships the Dukes and the NEC should offer a pretty respectable program. Now if we could only finish building Rooney Field to help with recruiting and atmosphere!

TS- any word on if Rombach is coming back for a 5th year? Our strong point of depth at QB might not be so deep if he dosent come back and Dixon's surgically repaired shoulder isnt 100%. I doubt that we will get a highly recruited QB coming in with Dixon having two years left and Patterson having 4.

Shoey...This is only conjecture on my part but I have to think that Kevin will be back. At this point in his career, he only has one year left. If he transfers, he'll have to sit a year. I'm sure that he wants to finish and move on. As far as Connor is concerned, I know that he is in some pain and that the shoulder is bothering him. I'm also told that with a torn labrum, the healing is usually around 12 months. With him playing after only nine, I wonder if he tore it again.

Solid back in Sinisi and enough beef in front of him to tear up highways.
Plus Monmouth has done a nice job of cherry picking from some of the best programs in NJ. So they have lots of talent.
D-line has to smash some faces from the start and play tough and physical the whole game -- no letdowns.
On offense, I think a short passing game mixed in with selective runs will be needed to eat clock and keep the ball out of Sinisi's hands. O-line also needs to play tough.
My prediction: 20-16 Dukes.

Also, congrats to the Dukes on a fine season opening victory over High Point yesterday.
Let's dedicate and be determined to not accept anything less than an NIT appearance this year!
Without a bid to the post-season NIT, this year will be another abject failure. And I don't want to hear the supporters tell me to go easy "they're only a bunch of freshman, give them time", "if only Shawn James and Kojo Mensah had stayed", "give Coach Everhart a chance to develop his players", etc, etc, etc.
I'm getting so, so tired or waiting until next year.

Folks
I'd like to try to raise some money to buy a Duquesne/Robert Morris Challange Trophy for next years and there after. I've put some ideas together on my blog that is linked above. Any excess cash would be turned over to the military family who may need some assistance. Please take a look at the blog by clicking on the link or at http://duquesnesports.blogspot.com/ .
I'd like to use the trophy to also recall the past city rivalries and traditions by naming after Elmer Layden, former Four Horsman, Duke's coach and NFL Commissioner.
Send along ideas.

Duquesne had a hard time recovering from the RMU loss. It threw the team into a funk. This is the same team that beat Dayton and should have beaten Albany. The Dukes can win against Monmouth if they avoid mistakes and play consistent through 4 quarters.

The weather is terrible and the only ground they are picking up trying to pass is on pass interferance calls. The running game is working. Why pass????? The last drive of the half goes into the red zone and two sacks and a holding blow the opportunity!
PLAY CALLL, PLAY CALL, PLAY CALL!!!!!! STICK WITH WHAT WORKS AND THEN SET UP A PASS OR TWO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. Given the very disappointing results of this season so far, what is the team's overall attitude with 2 games remaining? 2. Which QB will start against Wagner?
3. How many of the 18 athletic scholarships that were available for this season were used? How many players got full athletic scholarships? I ask this because it my understanding that scholarships can be divided into fractions.

Alex, please let him know that a lot of people are behind him and the team, and want to see them succeed.
He has a lot of freshmen and sophs starting along both lines, and at LB. How does he view their progress?
One of the problems with so much youth is sometimes a lack of leadership among the players. Who among the young guys is starting to emerge as a team leader?
What does he think he will need, player-wise, to be more successful next year? I think a lot of us believe we're a little small along the lines. At what other positions is he recruiting?
Any plans to recruit outside of Pittsburgh? How about the Lehigh Valley and NJ?
Would he have any interest in a 50-year-old NT who can still stuff the run and has four years of eligibility? Nah, skip that last one. I've lost a step and wouldn't be much use on passing downs ...

I'd ask if he is playing the best players available at the time or is he developing talent to build for the future. (Or a combination of the two?
I'd also ask if making the Hall of Fame is going to Dave Loya's head yet! (Dave is a great guy!)
Which freshman is the most pleasant surprize?

FIRST I WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE WHO RESISTED JUMPING ONTO THIS BOARD AND POSTING HIS OR HER EMOTIONS AFTER THE GAME. SECOND, HAVING HAD THE BENEFIT OF AN EXTRA HOUR'S SLEEP, I HAVE COME UP WITH THE FOLLOWING EXERCISE. TRUE DUKE FANS ARE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE. HERE'S HOW IT WORKS: AS RESEARCH HAS SHOWN, THE HUMAN MIND WILL TEND TOWARD THE NEGATIVE UNLESS IT IS PROGRAMED. SO, INSTEAD OF GOING WITH OUR NEGATIVE THOUGHTS, LET'S SEE HOW MANY POSITIVES WE CAN COME UP WITH IN REGARD TO DUKES FOOTBALL 08. THESE ARE THE KINDS OF MESSAGES THAT WE NEED TO SEND TO THE TEAM AND THE COACHES IF WE WANT TO SEE WINS IN THE FUTURE. THANKS FOR ENDULGING ME! (another plus of this exercise: research has shown you will live longer if you challenge your mind.... I challenge each of you Duke fans!)

1. Through-out this season there have been glimmers of talent that outshined my expectations. It has not been all bad (and let's face it.. it COULD have been!!!) This team has not been slaughtered and shut out! Thanks for the excitement of those plays showing us that talent is on this team!

Hey KK I think it's a good idea to remind true Duke fans that it's OK to support this team even though they're having a losing season. Hey, unless people here are only fair-weather fans, why not be positive and look to the future? Those boys and the coaches certainly deserve support and patience. I believe they are hurting as well. They are the ones out on those fields!
Change takes time. Believe in them.

That's crazy in my mind to reduce it down to a single "culprit" It's a TEAM effort remember? More than any one factor put them in this position. Everyone who cares about this team is "hurting." Some people will just complain more but I agree w KK - that's it's better to try to be positive.

KKD- You are truely one of the most positive contributers to this board. I'm really sorry I missed the only game you could make it to from Florida. I appreciate your efforts to make the rest of us feel better. I'll contribute a positive- This team has only 9 seniors and the future is well ahead of it. Lets learn from our mistakes now and put them behind us. We really had a chance at all of our games and given a few years of Division I Football and a few pounds on the young frames it will make a huge difference.
Listen- We hung tight and could have beaten the team that is now undefeated in conference. The other teams have had two years of scholarship players before we offered our first.
We will be there next year and I think we will win it all in Dixon's Senior year.
Some fans turn quiet and don't write as much. The amount of visits to the site has not fallen, but its not growing as it had been after the Dayton win. We actually had the most growth after the Albany loss and then kind of plateaued after that. Posts are down though. I get the same way. I'll read the comments, but don't feel much like writing.

Obviously all of us here are Duquesne fans and feel the sting after every loss. The season however has proven, at least to me, to have been successful in a number of ways.
Our young and inexperienced boys have been in every game they've played. They have never given up on themselves despite what has been written here.
We have entered a new and exciting era of DU football where scholarships can be given and will keep a lot of the WPIAL kids at home. Did anyone see the Gateway-McKeesport game? Don't be surprised if you see RB Brian Williams in a DU jersey next year as well as Nathan Lojack OG from Trinity.
A few more transfers, a few more recruits and this team will be one to reckoned with. This team is paying the price this year for what I'm sure will be a league championship in 2010. Go Dukes!

What purpose would that serve?
Football is the greatest sport on the planet, because it teaches you everything you need to know to be successful in life -- leadership, teamwork, discipline, dedication -- all while you get to smash someone in the mouth.
Jerry Schmitt recruited these kids, implemented his system, practices them every day. I'm sure losing is grating on him, but he's throwing young kids out there every week on both sides of the line and he's doing that to build for the future. He has invested too much into this to consider something like quitting.
It would not be the right thing to do.
Neither is taking the boys bowling and giving them ice cream after another loss the right thing to do. It teaches them to be pansies and girley-men.
Get 'em up early, work their butts off, go through the tape, work on fixing the things that need to be fixed, and get ready for the next opponent.
Anything else is unacceptable.

I had to allow "pop-ups" from WMNY to get the station's live streaming. Otherwise, Redzone did work. when I switched from the WMNY broudcast. The radio had it, but the signal is weak where I live.
Dukes up 3-0 and are typically starting well. We'll see if it holds.

Jake- I agree with you. I'd also add that this team needs to start believing in itself again and develop consistencey. This is not the same team that beat Dayton. It has the same talent. The big difference is confidence in itself. Losing to Albany hurt, since we could have won that game but made some late mistakes. Losing to RMU after being up hurt the team's attitude and confidence even more. We need to play a solid 40 minute game. Our offense particularly has either looked great or lost with very little in between.

True- This team needs to build confidence and consistency. They also need to work on a better substitution pattern when the defense is on the field so long when the offense starts to sputter.
It may all stem from not following a game plan for 40 minutes with effective adjustments. The Dukes, with the exception of the Bucknell game have started out the games very well and usually have led at the start of the games only to see a steady return of the opponant. I'm not sure why Bucknell was the other way around!

I attended the game last Saturday and was sorry to hear the comments being yelled out to the team from the stands. It was obvious to me that the players could hear the comments which were (mainly) not constructive. The crowd makes a difference too-- so maybe the fans need to step up as well and be consistent with their support. Attitude does matter, so how about it start here. GO DUKES!

KKD- Nice comments. I missed the game for the first time this year due to a bit of a bug. Your attitude as a fan helps or hurts the attitude of the team. I wish some of the "fans" who have posted lately would find some other team to follow. They just don't get the concept that you can give a critical opinion without giving a personal attack.
I've actually thought of deleting this board since I will have no part of giving voice to those who can't be critical without turning destructive to the team. Yet at the same time I really hate having to delete posts even though the stated ground rules say "no personal attacks". You can criticize the game plan or say a coach has too much or too little discipline without the destructive venom. I also will not be a part of spreading team dissention when it is loosing. Look at Duquesne's past records in the media guide. Even the great Elmer Layden had a losing season two years before the Dukes won their first New Year's Day Bowl Game.
If you feel a coach isn't living up to standards say so in a constructive critical manner- don't post comments from disgruntled players to use them to bring down their teammates.
Call me a cheerleader. I want this team to win, not wallow in poisoned attitudes.

I understand Coffee. I feel for these student athletes... they need all of our support. After all, they aren't making the decisions and the play calls. Some of those comments I heard made me disheartened, so I can see why those kids would be down. Was looking for you at the game to introduce myself, but I was so bundled up I could hardly move around. While I love Pittsburgh, I kissed the ground when I got back to sunny Florida. Hope you are feeling better. GO DUKES!

KKD- It figures that someone from Florida would be at the coldest game of the year! Most of the other games had some decent weather. I'll be in your state in December. I teach with the Coast Guard in Jacksonville and will visit family in Clearwater before and after the class.
You are a great fan and I would have been happy to have met you. I've run into some other folks from this board and its funny how you get a picture in your mind of what someone looks like and then meet them in person! I pictured Doug to be a couch potato and he turned out to be a former player who looks like he could suit up. "Always a Duke" and friends looked like I'd have pictured them. "Marquis" is kind of quiet on the board, but hilarious in person. I was sorry to have missed Homecoming, but will be at the last game.
GO DUKES!

I don't mean to squash discussion on important topics such as to who should start. Hey- That's part of why we follow the team and why fans have a right to an opinion. That’s why the board was started. All coaches make mistakes and I've been very critical of things involving the program too (particularly the size of the stands which now can't even host Central Catholic's Football games anymore).
The thing I objected to was when those close to the team share locker room information on this public board. There is a boundary issue there.
I thought that Coach Gatuso was a very tough act to follow and looking at Coach Schmitt's record at Westminster showed a barely above .500 program. Many folks I know who I respect seem to thing Schmitt is a class guy individually and deserves a chance.
THE BIG PROBLEM is that Western PA is finally entering into a class of football that we never had before (1-AA or FCS). There is a big difference in the quality of player that plays for Pitt, Penn State and WVU and the D-II, III and Mid-Majors. Duquesne, RMU and St. Francis are finally filling that gap and giving the “hot-bed” of football in Western PA a chance to keep some of these kids at home who fit. It’s about time and we are still catching up.
Sacrificing the short term for the long term is a hard strategy to follow, particularly when these kids give up playing time and they chose to play without the funding. The question is how much you sacrifice and get the best kids on the field somehow. Greg Hough is a great example.
As always-- GO DUKES!!!!

There's an answer to the recruiting problem that is not far-fetched. First, we seem to have some good ties into the DC/MD area, which has produced a bunch of good players for us. We have coaches with ties to the Lehigh Valley area, which is a hotbed for football. I'd like to see us do more recruiting there again. Finally, and this is my jingoism showing again, NJ produces a lot of good football players at this level. The CAA and Patriot League rosters are full of kids from the Garden State. Scoop up a couple kids each year from the big programs like Phillipsburg (much as I hate the devil, I give him his due), Don Bosco, St. Joe's. My alma mater, Irvington, has been sending at least one kid a year to a major BCS program. Schedule a game against Lehigh or Lafayette every year to get out to the Lehigh Valley.
I don't mean any of this to be criticism of the way we recruit, and I believe Western PA has to be the base.
Cheers.

This Saturday 17,000 fans are expected to pack the stands for the annual Liberty vs. Freedom high school game in Bethlehem. I know for a fact that 50 tickets have been set aside for college scouts. I also know that a Duquesne scout will not be present. If you are serious about recruiting from the area then don't wait until your season is over because there will be noone left to recruit. Could I also add that once you have played in this environment (Liberty average 10,000 for their home games, they have 400 car tailgates staring at 3PM on Friday afternoons parades through town, bonfire pep rallies, etc, etc)that a recruiting trip to Pittsburgh on a cold, snowy December morning to view a stadium that is barely bigger than Liberty's locker room, is a little "underwhelming" and may account for the lack of recruits from this area in the last 3 years following the 2003/2004. El Duque, you know exactly what Lehigh Valley football is like. Would you commit to Duquesne after a campus visit if you were one of these kids ????????

What goes on in the locker room unfortuantley in this case shows the real charachter of this coach and his lack of discipline. A young man we talked to after the game was telling his parents he had more discipline on his high school team. SAD!! Also he related stories of some players not coming to practice and no consequences whatsoever. A sign of a coach who does not want to take control.
He probably is a nice guy just not a take charge guy.
This is not the first time over the past three years this has come to light.
I can't wait to see what excuses will be posted for Schmidt. Oh don't forget to go to Liberty Mutual.com and vote for Gerry as coach of the year. RIGHT!!!

I have faith that this team WILL get better in time!! To expect tremendous cohesion and performance in a new conference the FIRST year is a tall order. To harbor resentment doesn't help anything either. These boys will rise above and make us all proud. They have to work together as a TEAM though and they have to WANT it. I hope Coach Schmitt will get the job done.

Conner took some hits and had a bad game. Kevin should have come in in the second half. There is nothing wrong with playing the hotter hand. Dixon has shown to be a hot and cold QB. Lately he is cold and there is an all conference QB on the bench

Lets not get too down on Dixon. Once again our recievers dropped balls and ran bad routes. Connor didn't have a stellar day for sure but to lay all the blame at his feet is unfair. Plenty of that to go around. One INT should have been knocked down by Roberson and another hit Rasky on the numbers in the endzone, bounced off him and into a DBs hands. I'm more concerned about our defense. No adjustments to their swing pass that they threw a dozen times or more and one blitz all game.

Its not often that I agree with both sides of an issue but in this case I do. Perhaps its time to give Kevin a look. I mean, what can it hurt? Allowing Connor to see the game from a different perspective might be the way to go. He has to be frustrated at the number of drops and broken plays and it would be natural to feel the pressure.
Maybe sitting would clear his head.
I don't however think that Connor is playing poorly. He has thrown some bad balls but some very fine tosses were dropped. All three of his interceptions should have been avoided Spanky. The two that you mentioned and one that was an obvious out pattern where the receiver turned in.
All things considered, CD is a better QB but one that needs to get back his focus. He took some wicked shots again today and has taken them the past four games. Maybe its time for him to regroup.

Connor is throwing the ball to sopts on the field where he supposes the receivers will be, some throws in the second half had no spiral or thrust at all. Something is wrong and I think his shoulder is not 100%. He starts strong and becomes weaker as the game progresses when the strong arm is needed. You are right it is not the only problem but if you really think Rombach can't compete in this league you are mistaken. He threw for over 300 yards last year at Scared Heart's home field. Of course we won't know becuase of a head coach to stubborn to try something else. It took him to the fourth quarter to show any emotion to this team and try and rally them.
Connor has 51% completon average. Not very efficient when you are tyring to rally from behind. 4 of 19 in seocnd half. A series or two for Kevin would have been good and maybe would have let Connor refocus a bit. Schmidt is a die hard and by not shaking up this line-up on either side of the ball to get some players attention is a big mistake.
Schmidt is loosing this team week by week as many young men after the game "just want the season to be over" they are tired of lack of discipline on the team and a coach who talks alot aobut change but never takes action to try and shake things up a little.
Nothing the matter with playing freshman but if they are not imporving at this point what do you loose by putting in some of your veterans and see what they can do, and if these kids want their positions back go out and play smarter and harder.

Sometimes I have to laugh at what is being posted on this board. Play the hotter hand? Dixon is still the NEC yards per game leader, is leading the NEC in total passing yards and is second (19-18) in TDs despite playing 1 less game. He has two fewer INTs than Fink and the same as Esposito (UA) despite throwing 50 more passes. An all conference QB on the bench? Nothing against KR, but what conference are we talking about? This isn't the old Metro conference any more. Instead of LaSalle and St Peters or Marist and Iona, this team is playing REAL football teams.
Dixon may have his youthful shortcomings and most certainly played average yesterday but anyone who thinks that this season would be any different with Kevin or Sean in there is delusional. There were four drops, one for a TD that hit our guy in the numbers and became an interception and one that was called back for holding.
Our defense gets shredded by the run every game, our D backs play off the ball despite the fact we are torched by short passes in the flat the entire game. We blitzed once yesterday. We are fooled by a fake punt and a fake field goal in the SAME series just before halftime. I mean, is there anyone watching the game in the press box? Still leading 17-15, we have them in a fourth and one and we jump offsides. Everyone in the stands knew they were trying to get us to jump and we did. SHU ran 72 plays to our 48. No friends, its not the QB. For our sake, I wish it was that simple.

The only thing delusional is when you are doing the same things you hope to get different results. The QB position is the marquee position and gets more credit and takes more blame. The only stat that matters is W/L.

Thats exactly my point. Too much blame is being put on this one kid when the whole team and the coaching staff are to blame. It is also true that W/L are all that count but stats can point to where the real problems are and that my friend is on defense.

To sat that Kevin cant play in this league is delusional. Wasnt he the QB that beat NEC teams? To say that Patterson cant is really delusional (although it would be a waste to play him now and lose the red shirt). From the Spring Game and practices that I have seen and heard he is a 2 dimensional QB that allows the team to run a true spread offense. I just looked at Weber St. and they are top 10 in 1AA. Next year we will have a (MSU transfer)Pro-Style QB-Connor and a Multi-dimenional in (Weber St. signee) Patterson. I know I have repeated myself but when you have scholarship athletes and the player in front of them has not performed (well) those players arent going to sit around like before. We must have higher expectations and if not (all positions) see if other scholly players can play. This goes for all positions so when we are two deep at a position we truly have a sprited competition. competition at your position only makes us better. We need a W BAD!

The passing game was 4-19 35 yards and 3 INT over the last three quarters. From what I saw the one TD could of easily been picked for a 99 yard return but we caught a break. It's too late to play Kevin we are all-in with what he have done. I see Rombach leaving and not coming back for a 5th year. I also wouldnt want to be the back-up for the next two years if I were a QB, if a All-League player dosent play what chance does anyone else have? This is not non-scholly Duquesne anymore our backups are scholarship kids and if they see no chance to play these players can look elsewhere. It is alot harder juggling players that can get $$$$ elsewhere. How many of our coaches have coached at a D1 scholly school? Sometimes you pick the wrong horse. I hope our players dont stop believeing if they work hard and the player ahead of them dosent produce they will get a shot. We need a W bad!!!!

Wow- Who is this team? This stuff started with the Bucknell game. Are there two teams out there? The team who played the second half of the Bucknell game and the 1st quarter of the Sacred Heart game or the team who finished the game. The Dukes were close to going up 21-0, but then went home.
I hate to say it, but it is time for Rombach to go back in.

Let's move that line over a bit today and get a win in the rain for Homecoming!!!!

We know Jerry will bring his A coaching game which meams we can exepct anything. At least we know we will have veteran players wathcing again from the sidelines.

As far as I'm concerned, I support the coach and the team each week and I will do nothing to hurt the team or their morale. Team attitude can outweigh team talent and derision among the players or members of the team's extended family will do the team damage. I've seen it.
If it comes time to change coaches, it must be done after careful consideration to the facts and statistics without looking at the emotional entanglements as to who's feelings are hurt. I would and have benched a kid for showing a bad attitude and not sacrificing for the team.
I do agree that it seems that the coaching staff has made a committment to long term gain of the program. At the end of four years, we will see better if its paid off. I also agree that I've criticised the playcalling at times. Nobody is right all the time. However, there is a huge difference between giving an opinion and spreading a bad self-first attitude. Life and a football career is what you make of it.
In the mean time, I have little tolerance for those who have not followed Greg Hough and Kevin Rombauch's example to do what is best for the team.
I wish the team and all of its players the best. They will either win together or certainly lose if they cant pull together.
Sorry for the sermon, but I've seen the results of players and the team family tearing itself apart from the inside.
Give it time and we will see.

Excellent post Mr. Coffee. Once again you hit the nail on the head. A coach in my opinion needs to play the hand he is dealt, especially in this situation where you are playing higher caliber competition and teams who have had scholarship athletes for 3 plus years.
When do you make the transition? I'm sure that a lot of these younger kids were told that they would be given the chance to play right away. It had to be a selling point to get them here. That said, I'm also sure that the recruiting class of 2008 is being told the same thing.
I appreciate what the upperclassmen have done for this program and the heart and dedication that they have shown. As a life long Duke's fan, I can also appreciate what Coach Schmitt is trying to do. He must look to the future and the future are the youngsters. The experience they are gaining this year will surely pay dividends down the road.

Coffee- I agree with what you are saying and the long term goals of the program. However, in reality I understand the feelings and actually do believe players were GIVEN positions over others that have produced. It was a tough situation (invested scholly vs non-scholly) With that I have said all along the day Dixon started over Rombach.........we better win or there are going to be issues. I support the team but I dont think it is wrong or tears the team apart by people venting (dont like personal attacks) on a messageboard. I am gald we just have interest.....there is alot of venting on Duke BBALL, Florida FBALL boards it dosent hurt the team. It may offend some but it also shows a passion that the program obviously needs. Sorry for the run long wind but message boards are not meant to be the mutual admiration society forum. If we want to be a bigtime program it comes with the territory. I consider Florida to be bigtime.....you should of seen those message boards after the Miss St. loss... Lets beat SH.......a win and the message board will be full of love......W's cure everything (almost)! Santonio has me so mad I cant sleep!!!!!!!!

Well said, and the right thing to say. After 30 years of misery I think more Dukes fans and alumni (and I would dare to say students too) want the opportunity to see programs grow and develop. Every fan is entitled to his or her own opinion, and if someone thinks Jerry Schmitt is not a good coach, well, that's fine. But here's a guy who has been attacked since the day he was hired, in part because he replaced on of the two best coaches in DU football history, and in part because some felt that another coach should be hired, either from within or without the system. People forget that Schmitt is a Duquesne guy, who was a big part of the Gattusso success here. I think better days are ahead for Duquesne. We have a lot of youth in key areas, but we are attracting good players at the skill positions. I would like to see a bit more beef on the lines, but I think that will come in time. I want Duquesne to excel in everything.
I'm glad there are positive, knowledgeable people like you and the other supporters on the site.

At some point the young defense is going to click together, the young o-line will hold together a little better, Dixon will get a little sharper, and we'll see a solid 30-7 type of win for the Dukes.
No time like the present ...

I agree. It's a matter of inspiration, not motivation.
I've never been one to suggest what a coach should do. If I were in Coach Schmitt's shoes, I would throw the kitchen sink at Sacred Heart. Blitz relentlessly, look to throw downfield early, try to block a punt, just keep piling it on. But that's why he gets paid to coach, and why I pay to see games.

Jamie, I'm not giving up on this season yet. I had hoped to win the conference and we have proven we can be competative. Our new goal should be to keep the 14 year winning season streak alive to build on for the next few years.
The two biggest things to work on are stopping the run and getting Conner's confidence back. He is a competator and I'd have let Kevin take a few series to let him get his head together and watch for a time. This is really the first college ball he has played and he needs to be brought along.

I for one am very proud of these kids. I don't think people realize what a huge step it was moving into this much more competitive conference. To think we would run over the likes of Albany, CCU and Monmouth in our first season was wishful thinking. We have been in every game this year which bodes well for the future. Arute field was very nice and it was a beautiful day.
Obviously we need help on the line on both sides of the ball. That will come with recruiting and maturity. The one issue I have with this game and all season long for that matter however is play calling. Down 7-0 we move the ball on our opening drive some 70 yards to the one and decide to kick the field goal. I don't know about you folks but if I'm a kid on that offense, that move tells me that the coach doesn't believe in me. It was obvious that the kids wanted to go for it and I saw a lot of heads hanging.
In any case, we played a very strong CCU team tough. The two fumbles were unfortunate. We hold onto the ball and its down to the wire again.
As far as Connor Dixon is concerned, I don't see a lack of confidence but rather a kid that has to get rid of the ball earlier than he plans. Thats just my opinion and something that will change when we strengthen the line. He just isn't getting the time he needs to go through his progressions. 3 or 4 bad balls but at least that many drops.
Nathan Totino played awesome. The kid never tires.
For now though, despite the 2-4 record, I'm very proud of these kids.

Coffee-----thanks for the never ending belief in the team. It may get worse before it gets better but it will get better. I would agree with Shaler Tom. Dixon was 62% with three TDs and 40 yards rushing. Had to rush a few and also made some throws he probably wished he had back. No picks or fumbles. Don't see the confidence thing. The offense was more balanced. Barring the fumble on the 1 we may have scored over 30 and that should be enough to win the game except if you give up over 300 yards rushing. CD threw some questionable balls but so did ROMO and FAVRE last weekend. I thought overall the offense moved well and I'm not sure what a change would have brought about unless you just want to keep KR fresh and ready. By the way, I heard that CD was fighting a bug and throwing up on the sidelines. Any truth to that? Sounds farfetched. I saw a lot of holding on our D line--some true takedowns. Also, i thought the call on Totino was bad. He touched the kid and the kid flopped. Their sideline went nuts and then the flag. Overall, I thought the spotting and officiating were terrible. Missed two blatant interfence calls, one on Roberson, one on Bunevich. On a bright spot, our linemen will have a year of experience worth one hundred and 20 poounds each next year.
