I'm not sure what's gone wrong, but it's worth mentioning that a full strip-down is not required to remove the HD.

Take the back off; remove the speaker; then identify the clip on the sled on which the FD is fitted; raise the 'clip' with a flat screwdriver, and the FD should slide out on its sled, helped, perhaps by tipping the machine backwards so that gravity helps.

I suspect that you haven't got the sled fully relocated, hence the angled FD.
