From a January 10, 2005 NCAA press release: ...the Board of Directors requested that NCAA staff draft legislation for the Board�s consideration in April that would modify or eliminate the 15,000 average attendance requirement for Division I-A membership. I'm impressed that they're beginning to get tough, at least in theory, with the most flagrant exploiters at the I-A level, and stunned as to the prospect of eliminating the A/AA distinction. I guess if the recommendation passes, the I-A and I-AA subclassifications would be eliminated, erasing the I-AA �stigma�. Three major developments. 1st, the NCAA has further tightened it's academic standards at schools competing at the Div 1 level. 2nd, they've finally put some teeth into penalties for non-compliance of these tighter standards. 3rd, is the move toward one larger 1-A football division. Remember when our esteemed AD was telling everyone the NCAA would ultimately divide all programs into 1-A & 1-AA for all sports? My guess is that even if Fordham isn't hampered by the I-AA label we might still be by the non-scholarship stigma and the perception that our program just isn't "big" enough (a situation I think wouldn't apply to Lehigh). If they do erase the I-A/I-AA distinction, I think Fordham would be in an absolutely prime position to make the jump up to scholarship football and start getting some quality away games. End of the I-AA playoffs? Probably. Bowl bids? Unlikely. However, I could see the formation of smaller �bowls� pitting the champions of rival conferences. E.g., the A-10 champion could play the winner of the soon-to-be CAA football league.
