Subject: Newell Swartz Obituary

AUGUST 27, 1939 ~ APRIL 29, 2019 (AGE 79)

It is with a sad heart that we have to inform you of the passing of our longtime friend and brother of the badge, retired Sergeant Newell M. Swartz, Badge #2007. We are at a loss of words tonight. The Good Lord called Newell home on April 29, 2019 at about 8 PM and his passing was peaceful with his wife Maria and daughter Patti by his side, as well as retired Sergeant Randy Young #2084. Newell fought hard against the illnesses that claimed this strong man, his leukemia and the double pneumonia that struck him several weeks ago. He had been on a ventilator for the last weeks of his life and they removed it this afternoon. Newell served his country well, being a veteran of the United States Air Force and the United States Army, from which he retired after a full career. He went on to be an Officer with the Arizona Department of Public Safety when he became a member of DPS Class 29 in January 1977, graduating in April of that year. His first duty station was Casa Grande. After he was promoted to Sergeant, Newell served in both Highway Patrol Bureau and Criminal Investigations. He retired in January, 2002 after 25 years of service to the citizens of Arizona. In addition to his wife of 60 years, Maria, he is survived by his daughters Christine , Patti and son Brian. Cards of condolence can be sent to the family address at: 6408 S. 39th Place, Phoenix, AZ 85042 Newell will be missed by so many of his DPS family who have always held him in high regard. We will miss his trademark phrase "Listen up, Slick". Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this very sad time.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2019 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, with a Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:30pm, at Richardson Funeral Home, 2621 South Rural Road, Tempe, Arizona. Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Monday, May 6, 2019 at 9:30am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 2121 South Rural Road, Tempe, Arizona. Burial, with full military honors, will take place on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 10:30am at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 North Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, Arizona. Cards of condolence can be sent to the family address at: 6408 S. 39th Place, Phoenix, AZ 85042

Richardson Funeral Home, Tempe, Arizona is compassionately serving the family.
