Steve,

You make good points. Every cancer is different, so you have to be well informed before you make treatment decisions. Even then, there are no guarantees that you made the right decision.

I was diagnosed over 3 years ago and was a 6 on the Gleason scale. After a lot of reading and consultations with my Urologist, I decided on not doing any treatment. I decided to be monitored every 3 months with PSA tests and new biopsies after two years.

My PSA stayed pretty normal but the biopsy after two years came back with a Gleason score of 7 and between 40-50% of the prostate showing indication of cancer. At that point, my Urologist said monitoring was no longer an option. It was either surgery or radiation. With all of my other ailments, I quickly ruled out radiation. I elected a radical prostatectomy (complete removal of the prostate) using a DaVinci robot and laser. There was little to no post-op pain but I was left with an "outie," when I had had an "innie," (belly button) since birth. It also left me incontinent. With the aid of medication (Vesicare 10mg) and Kegel exercises, I have almost recovered my continence (my surgery was in May 2017, so it doesn't recover overnight).

Some consider prostate treatment a very personal matter. I don't feel that way and will be happy to discuss my journey with anyone facing the treatment dilemma.
