Subject: Flying the American Flag at Half Staff

When should the flag be flown at half-staff?
I found this on VA.Gov today after seeing the tragic news of another school shooting. This time in Santa Fe, Texas. With a beautiful granddaughter attending her first formal dance at her middle school tonight I was frightened for her and deeply saddened for the victims and their families. Instead of thoughts & prayers, please don’t make this about lack of faith, I decided I would set my American flag at half staff. I think it’s time we show a visual concern & symbolize our mourning for our children, their educators & first responders. Yes, those first responders, that put their own lives on the line to rescue the wounded & carry off the lifeless. Some may find this subject matter inappropriate for this venue but I’m very sure my granddaughter Isabella and the very large majority of our school age children will not. So here is the next to the last paragraph of Flying the American Flag at Half Staff:

“The president may order the flag to be flown at half-staff to mark the death of other officials, former officials, or foreign dignitaries. In addition to these occasions, the president may order half-staff display of the flag after other tragic events”.
