Charles,

Visited the Punch Bowl National Cemetery in Oahu, Hi, a few times to see Al Vandergoore’s grave. He was wife’s uncle who was KIA on the USS West Virginia, torpedoed and sunk next to the Arizona. He was 19 and first listed MIA, BNR, and counted as lost at sea. On our 10th anniversary, Kathy’s father asked us to take a photo of his brother Al’s name on the ‘Wall’ at the Arizona Memorial. When there, we couldn’t find his name so we went to graves registration (then at the main office) and they checked and said his body was recovered and he was buried there. Al’s family was never notified, and his parents died believing he was lost at sea. We were told communications was sketchy and nothing like today and with WWII’s early uncertainty, follow up notifications just faded away.
