Why did You have to die,
Before we could reconcile?

You winged your way heavenward. I'm left
with the guilt... and to think, all I had to do
was dial— and things might have been different.

You gave me a dog-chain silver bullet and said,
With that one ounce of silver I would never be
poor. With our veterans friendship-memories,
even now, I will never be poor.

And now, I wonder why you never called;
Do you remember the-why?
Or were you just stubborn,
like me?

The-Dividers divided most everyone, it seemed.
Their havoc still evident today. Some friends just nod
in passing, where once their reunion greetings of
back-slaps, broad smiles and uproarious laughter prevailed.

Bulletin Board posts flowed with Goodwill and
Glad-How-Dees you could feel through print that ruled
the day. A joy felt and treasured within.

Worried members would request thoughts and prayers
And up they arose to swath lingering pains of heart,
Giving hope and true empathy; Yet sometimes God’s
Judgment left deep everlasting voids of emptiness;
We know not why; and other times waltzed
loved ones to health and merry.

Now begins a twinkle of flares, ever slight, to spark dry
kindled memories of old men and flame light to read
archived words of friends—Ah, I knew him well— find
delight as posts begin, "My brothers..." reading every
word, and wishing for more.

And now, I wonder why you never called;
Do you remember the-why?
Or were you just stubborn, my friend,
like me?
